  • The Players' Aid review Downfall: Conquest of the Third Reich from GMT Games, the late Chad Jensen's posthumous 2 player strategic world war two board game covering the decline of axis Germany. This hex and counter game feels more like a race to Berlin, and John Butterfield, with Kai Jensen's input have created a fitting tribute to one of wargaming's brightest stars.

It reminds me of Battle for Germany - my first Strategy & Tactics game.

Love you guys. Been watching forever. But how the HECK can you learn complicated games’s rules soooo quickly and seemingly easily??!

In fairness to me, this one I was taught by a friend, and then I in turn taught it to Grant after playing it once, which is much easier.

Great review that really highlighted how Downfall is different to other wargames but still telling us what is familiar. I liked the surprise ending too! You guys are my favourite channel and I always look forward to seeing what you have posted next. Like a previous commenter said, I really don’t know how you maintain the pace though and still hold down other jobs.

This video has better lighting and looks brighter + crisper. Perhaps it’s your TPA banner being in the centre (instead of game shelves) but definitely improved. Nice work TPA.

We’ve had a bit of that recently, and I’m not sure we really changed anything purposefully, so hopefully we can maintain that!

I've seen this a couple of times at my local convention, and it's such a beautiful map and very impressive. I think there were 3 games going on simultaneously once! I'm not sure that I'm quite ready for this, but I appreciated this review. Great job as usual, Alexander and Grant!

If you have an experienced player teach you, you’d be golden. The really important decision space is in choosing which action to take from those available. The actual move and combat stuff isn’t all that complex, all things considered.

I really, really love the theory and scale of this game. I bought it some weeks ago and I’m so glad my suspicions of it proved true thanks to your video.
Do you guys have any other games that play at this scale but faster? I plan on getting Worthington’s Normandy game. Are there any others I should keep in mind?

Great review for a game that seems to have what it takes to become a classic game!

Thanks for this commentary. As always, a very interesting discussion.
John Butterfield has said that the game was pretty much complete when he received it, but that what was missing were the rules. That is, the design and the components were all there, but no way to play the game in a way that could be understood by everyone else. Butterfield has stated that the game belongs to Chad, and that his (John Butterfield's) contribution was to bring it to the table. Would it might be more accurate to say that the game is, to use your words, "a tribute" to the Jensen's (given Kai's help), rather than to John Butterfield and Chad Jensen?
The comment about how much 'Downfall' is a "game" as opposed to a "simulation" is an interesting one. The implication is that if it's an experience that is fun and enjoyable to play, then it's more of a "game" than a "simulation". That's a different analysis than a "game" focuses on, say, mechanics as opposed to a "simulation", which is often cast as a generally accurate depiction of history with minimal variations. It will be interesting if you are able to take up this issue in episodes to come.
Thank you again for another thoughtful conversation.

Yeah it’s a nuanced discussion, but it’s more like; some games try so hard so model or represent everything they get bogged down and cease to be widely fun and playable. Whereas some games that focus on a clean, well paced, balanced experience may well be fudging or glossing over certain things to ensure those design goals. If that makes sense?

I really like your videos! But it's rather annoying when a major part of the game map - namely the essential initiative/weather track - is outside the screen view... sigh ...

This game can be played solo too.

    • @mikolajwitkowski8093
      @mikolajwitkowski8093 10 дней назад

It cannot, unless you are crazy. Running both sides and pretending you don't remember what cards other side has is not playing.

@@mikolajwitkowski8093 many people who play war games play both sides in such a manner, and there are many ways to do so. It’s not crazy at all, but rather a technique to explore tactics and strategy.
