  • had the opportunity to spend a little time talking w/ legendary bass player Jack Casady. Jack had such an influential role in Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna among others. Jack speaks here about his career .. the importance of music in his life .. his lifelong friendship w/ Jorma .. and the custom acoustic bass he helped design w/ guitar designer extraordinaire, Tom Ribbecke and was named after his late wife Diana
He's such a cool guy and graciously shares both his wisdom and his wit

Never thought to see such an emotional side to Jack...and it's very touching. He was always among my very favorite bassists and had SUCH a personal, powerful sound you always could tell it was him. Ditto his approach to the music itself. A brilliant guy who seems like a very good guy as well. So sorry about his wife.

I've greatly admired and have been a fan of Jack Casady for more than 50 years. Being a native of San Francisco I luckily immersed myself in the SF music scene, having always been a lover of the electric guitar. In April of '67 I saw the Airplane for the first time and was blown away by Jack's bass. And I still am. He's a genius.

Thank you Mr. Phelan for your thoughtful questions and for allowing plenty of space for Mr. Casady to speak. I've seen interviews aplenty where the host doesn't really listen, interrupts the musician to ask a prepared question or something based on an assumption, putting the guest almost in a defensive situation. This was fine, and much appreciated.

Hes very articulate and intelligent aside from being one of the best bass players of all time. I can tell he has a tremendous love for his late wife. I can relate as I lost my wife in 2008... way too young

Hot Tuna came to the Free State of Kansas the other night (12/12/2018), where they performed at Liberty Hall in Lawrence. I first saw them open for Jefferson Airplane in 1971 in KansasCity, KS. Jorma and Jack are still fabulous musicians, and represent the cause "liberty and justice for all" admirably. Right on, guys!

At 13 mins., when he talks about playing within the song, exploring but within the melody, and then, later, how stellar lyrics, great lyrics and song, inspire the quality of the notes, the playing . . . And, on a different level, his reverence for his deceased wife, speechless. Among other things not explored, Casady was called to England at one point in his career to play with Hendrix, by Hendrix--that's the type of reputation he had. Thanks!

That is a beautiful instrument he has. The closest I ever got to seeing the Airplane was seeing Hot Tuna in the eighty's. I've always loved Jack's approach to bass playing. We're losing all these great musicians one at a time whose music & art have certainly influenced my life. Nothing lasts forever but thanks for the memories.

Saw Jack's first concert with the Airplane in Berkeley in 1965. Still have the poster showing the first bassist. Bob Harvey.. Jack was the best bass in the SF scene. Also saw an early pre-Hot Tuna concert at the Bear's Lair also on campus 1968 or so. First bass player that made rock really soar.

That bass has a beautiful and "natural" tone so I'm getting used to the bulk of an accoustic bass look. Hot Tuna, mainly just accoustic and bass guitar was unusual but Jack was The Band playing behind and With the lead guitar which carried it through.
Personally he seems like his music, intelligent and "natural".
