Breath of the Wild - Best Starting Gear for Master Mode (updated)

- Breath of the Wild has a durability mechanic that brings plenty of new challenges to the table. The possibility of your favourite weapon breaking may seem like an intimidating prospect at first, but once you now you have a potentially endless supply of powerful gear in reserve, you'll be courageously taking on the world of Master Mode without breaking a sweat!
I found the best starting move once leaving the plateau is to get the phantom armour, which in my opinion is the best early-game armour in the game. You can get it the moment you leave the plateau, it has a base armour of 8 each piece, the highest in the game and it provides an attack bonus with each piece. it's only downside is it has no set bonus. It'll be the best combat armour you have until you can get barbarian armour or ancient soldier gear to level two.
So how do you get this armour? well here's how I did it:
1. Tame a horse, it really makes getting the armour easier.
2. Head to the Colosseum, this is where the first piece is located, it's also the closest to the plateau and the most dangerous spot as a Lynel with some pretty powerful gear resides here and there are some enemy floaty platforms around the bridge- I used my horse to run past them and go straight to the Colosseum.
3. The first piece is in a chest long the inside of the outer wall. Sneak in behind the pillar on the right from the entrance when the lynel isn't looking, then continue to each pillar, using magnesis behind each one. The chest should be hidden behind a small corner, grab it get the armour and leave. Have your horse close outside in case something goes wrong and you need to use the Joestar family secret technique of running away.
4. The second piece is by far the easiest piece to get. Head to the Hyrule fields Sheikah tower, then look towards the plateau, there should be a bunch of ruined buildings and a broken cart seperated from them by a road. The chest containing the next piece is with that broken cart. Just be aware there are a couple mobile guardians around here, if you have a horse this'll be no problem, simply pull up by the cart magnesis the chest loot it and leave, any guardian that spots you your horse can outrun.
5. The third and final piece is at the sacred ground ruins, on the map it should be a stone circle shaped thing a little south of hyrule castle. The chest is located on the southern side of the platform use magnesis to find it and take treasure. Be aware, there is another guardian hanging around here. If you are quick and stay on the southern side you should be fine. Again, have the horse ready for a quick escape.
You can get the pieces in any order, this is simply my preferred method.
And there you have it, the best early game armour (Well for combat at least) this set will keep you alive longer, kill things faster, preserve weapons and increase sneak attack damage with no prior upgrades. The best part about my route is it brings you close to hyrule castle, meaning you can go and get some strong weapons to use with your shiny new set of armour. Don't get too cocky though, it makes the early game easier, but doesn't completely remove difficulty, some enemies will still one-shot you if they have good weapons or are high levels. You still need to be careful, the phantom armour just means you can be a little less careful overall.
CraftySam how do you expect people to read all of that
Preferably with their eyes XD but yeah, I probably went a bit overboard.
CraftySam Naah it makes a good point
im still using the phantom armor and im almost done with the game
Wait don’t you need dlc for dat?

If you take the time and use magnesis on the chests, carry them 2 grids away from their location, they will respawn. There is a glitch for doing this with Guardians and maxing out on their parts which is good for maxing out on rupies and ancient arrows as well. But the respawning chests with diamonds is pretty sweet. I love RUclips and these videos, thanks. This one is much better than the first which was very good.
Two things for new players: 1. If you jump and hold forward to begin climbing the wall you can get a small kick-up boost that doesn't tax your stamina; the stamina wheel kicks in after this little hop, but it's substantial enough to make a difference in finishing a climb. 2. He mentioned using the shrines as warp points. For that you do need to open them first, though you don't need to enter them. They'll change from being entirely orange-lit to the bottom being blue (entirely blue after the shrine is completed). You'll see them on your map prior to opening them, but after summoning the castle docks shrine, for example, you'll need to approach the pedestal and use your slate to open it for it to be a warp point.
thank you, this set me up for great success in Master Mode. My son was thoroughly impressed at the speed in which I completed champions Balad and the game.
lol
For those of you too scared to go to the castle, you can go to the labyrinth near Robbie’s place for lots of nice stuff
Now, if you just add going to the second floor of the sanctum you can also get the royal guard's armor which will be very helpful.
Plus it looks great. I like the design. Though I've never thought of red being on the Hyrule guard's outfit. I always think of blue or purple when I think of Zelda guards and red when I think of gorons and Gerudo.
just wanted to say i never even step foot in hyrule castle in normal mode and i finally worked up the balls to do it on my brand new master save and wow i feel powerful now lol thank you
Gonna be honest this guide would be a lot better if you pulled out your map at major checkpoints
I'm pretty noob with this game and I was able to follow this guide, I admit a couple of times I was a little lost, but with common sense and replaying the video I was able to do it.

comrade 195 Ahhhh. Makes sense. Can Charizard learn ancient beam?
Deucedaman I think you need tm:00. You use an ancient core and 3 ancient screws to make it
comrade 195 Thanks dude. Will use. Any more tips?
Do you mean Dinraal?
Before going in there, get korok seeds for extra inventory space.
Eaxctly. Hold as much loot as possible
Good idea. I would ask why he didn't, but he went straight from great plateau sooo. Also ik that I'm like 3 years late
I'm currently in master mode BOTW, I've completed most of the game except for master trials and a few others things. anyways, my advice is that you do the korok glitch in akkala early game for inventory space. akkala might be far but trust me its worth it.
I promise this will be the last "Strongest Equipment after the Plateau video I'll ever make! :P FYI this method also works for Normal Mode, not just Master Mode! This is just showing the most efficient way to use Majora's Mask to get all the weapons you need from the castle, as well as the things I missed from last time, like the Hylian Shield or Savage Lynel Shield.
Happy trails, heroes.
Nn Li i want more

Following this strategy I feel like I'm ready to take on anything at this point. Thanks bro! Also really enjoyed watching your live broadcast with the kids today. Keep up the good work!
I like how he just casually electrocutes high level enemies and takes their weapons and walks away as they try to kill him.
If you do this, don't forget the royal guard's halberd in the dining hall! It's in the fireplace; you can get it with magnesis.
You just blew my mind. I’ve been running the castle scared out of my mind. Thanks man.
This video is great. I knew a bunch of these tricks, but this video made the time part of it easier, with the speedrunning techniques. Thanks!
In the dining room area, if you go to the very side on one of the sides, there will be a fireplace, in the fireplace there will be a royal guard halberd
This is funny because I went to Hyrule castle first and played on master mode first, I’ve had the game for 3 days and I love it. But I went to the shrine closest to the castle and went through the dungeon to just explore and ended up getting the Hylian shield and had no clue it was the strongest in the game. Left and found your vid went back and got everything else. Thanks man!
How did I not think about going to the castle with majoras mask...
Ousel I did it's more easier
Majorca mask
Why go to the castle in the beginning? Play 209 hours and you’re ready to go
@@tiitto167 yeah I did that my normal playthrough expecting an abrupt difficulty spike that never came, lol. YT videos make such a big deal about the castle and lost woods I thought oh man, better get most shrines and best equipment.
It was a bit of a let down to get to the sanctum by accident looking for the Hylian Shield, rofl. Great game, through and through, but without ANY direction I became OP before the second divine beast having been non stop sidetracked by hunting, fishing, and collecting Koroks.
My first visit to Korok forest I was able to cometely max my carry slots having found 460 prior to hitting the forest, lol!
fire arrows work best for killing stalnox, you just have to shoot him in the eye and it will do mega damage
btw this helped me alot! :)
Also if enemies spot you and you really don’t want to fight for early on master mode, just equip majoras mask, save and reload

Q:What to do after watching Nn Li Best Starting Gear For Master Mode?
A: Get Phantom Amor and go back to the starting zone and settle personal vendetta with that once insanely powerful Silver Lynel. Also, you can cook some Mighty Food, but the Phantom Armor is a permanent +3 Attack Boost (the best you can get) with high armor for starting gear. Although upgradeable gear surpasses Phantom Armor’s defense at 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️ except for the Phantom legs. Also in my personal opinion, Phantom Amor is the best armor if you want to role play a God of Destruction. Link has chosen harnessing darkness’s strength to save Zelda and Hyrule. Better yet, Link never talks, as though he is just waiting for events to trigger so he can destroy his next opponent. It also ties into why Link is the most powerful of Gannon or Zelda. The ability to die countless times only to try again and again until he is victorious. This same ultimate ability has chipped away at his sanity from dying over and over again. It’s pretty much the undead curse from Dark Souls, which is another game I’m a huge fan of.
Thanks again for the guide and may the Seven shine on your journeys through Hyrule.
Good thing I watched both your videos on this, you skipped the silver rupee on this one but I still got it!
Even though I didn't need this guide I still ended up watching it anyways because your great commentary made it entertaining :D
Is it essentially the same thing (but backward, obviously) if you enter the castle from the docks?
thanks so much for making this vid i have been trying to complete master mode but i have been only finding boko clubs and i could not defeat any monsters this helped so much
18:30 actually, since you got more ancient arrows before, you could simply use them on the Lynel and collect even more ancient arrows from the reward
Btw the when you enter the dining room you can get the bow at the top as well as a spear too the right in the chimney and you use magnesis to get it out from the top of the railing and this is a royal guard spear with 36 damage.
I died doing the stasis platform “we have lift off “ thing
26:09
Did the sword just clip through the floor?
If you have upgraded stasis that also works on gaurdians
My very 1st time playing Botw, Now when I need OP weapons I just go straight into Hyrule Castle to replenish. Easy in and out. One of the greatest things about a new RPG is exploring areas you know have greater enemies, weapons and items. I followed your plan without the mask.
When I went to Zora's domain to get the Divine beast I got a 34 damage ice spear.
Pretty effective that early in the game.
you missed the stone crusher which is hidden behind another one of the bookshelves in the library. its a very usefull weapon with high durability.
Mucus is a fine insulting label for Gannon's malice. I started Zelda in May. 700 hours later I still need to tame Thunderblight Gannon. Getting stronger and developing meals and potions almost causes a brief moment of pity for '"Sparky'" I'll check out this cache in the castle. Ancient arrows have become my way out of a gang fight at the expense of weapon forfiture. At least I wasn't killed. Tarry Town for a replacement Hylian Shield. 4k rupies a wack.
you must be straight ass at this game
indianawesomeness maybe he hadn't fought him? Maybe last time he fought he was under level.
At 68 yrs. old at least I'm ready to pounce on Gannon, with preduice. Got 1/3 of the seeds, 98 shrines, but that was just to max stamina. With 15 amiibos it takes a while to process them I guess. I stopped red hearts at 20. Durians, hearty salmons and truffles do a lot of my killin. And...my controller skills really suck.
Roger Dudra same oml
Get the phantom armor after getting majora’s mask (because you go into colosseum which has a lynel) and then head to hyrule castle then find the royal guard’s armor (which you skipped) just so you have it if you are going for a 100% play through
Hey did you ever explain why you needed to start out with a two handed weapon when wearing MM? Thanks.
For using stasis to boost myself on a rock to get into the castle safely.
I was in hyrule castle 2 days ago, missed the lunel shield, mist the shrine underground at the docks.

If i start a game in Master mode on the same nintendo account, that has my save will the old one be deleted?
And also can i have my mini map in Master mode?
It will be like a different home page, and for the map yes you still got it
Can you use amibios?
I know I'm late but I found out that if you drop the blue explosive in front of the enemies they'll be distracted allowing you to press Y on them and one hit
I'm getting ready to start a first ever play through of botw and I'm not sue what to do. I've heard the game can get too easy on normal after 10 hours or so, and I tend to get bored and quit games that aren't at all challenging, but I don't want it to be so frustratingly difficult, just challenging. Keeping that in mind, do you think t would be OK to just go ahead and start on master mode, or would you not recommend that?
Most informative botw video ive ever seen. thank you for making the vid. new sub
Best start is phantom armor with dlc. Each piece is 8 defense with attack up.
Or just cheese the game by only wearing Majora's mask and never get worried by enemies, except for Lynels and Guardians.
The game just started. There's not going to be gold enemies yet
@@elijahscott5561 if you're in master mode only black and golden and silver enemies are there
With this guide and the champions ballad DLC you get 2 of 3 royale gaurds armor pieces wich I find very uesful!!
I did almost the exact same route in my 2nd normal playthrough, except didnt have Majoras Mask so I had to rely on sneakstrikes
I've been playing MM for a few days and have been doing alright but I havent touched the castle though I know it would be really helpful.
This video helped me out so much. Thanks bro!!
The merchant is in tarry town he sells it for 3000 rupees but he was 1 every blood moon and you can only have one at a time
Does stalnox come back after blood moon and give another hylian shield? Might of gotten abit carried away in the forgotten temple
He comes back but the shield does not. Find the guy who sells the duplicate Hylian shield.
I think the Guardians are "deaf". I have run up behind them and whistled my ass off, shot arrows around on the ground, made as much noise as possible in other ways. They never seem to notice me unless I'm in front of them. However I am not on Master Quest yet. Is this anyone else's experience?
Yeah, same for me. You have to be within their line of sight for the to notice you.
If you ever get on top of a mobile guardian then whistle, they will instantly stop.
Really? I've attracted the attention of a Guardian by whistling and running behind them.
You must've been spotted *then* run around. They've been proven deaf.
Solidus 316 They have no ears
But how do i get the dark master sword with only three hearts???
Bmo Li the actual master sword is required, the dark master sword is a nickname for the royal guardians sword
sameer chowdhury thats just a joke because many people think you need 13 hearts to get the "dark master sword" :)
Bmo Li Majora mask
Lol
lmao, I ran into Ganons castle in mastermode immediately after Plateau without the mask and sneakstriked my way through it... it was a pain in the Arse to kill all the silver enemies with sneakstrikes with a 12 dmg weapon :3
Combine this with the route in the complete official guide expanded edition (walkthrough chapter) and you got the best route possible.
after a year and i still watch random botw stuff. i almost do the same but backward starting with the hylian shield and work my way to the flame2hander, activate shrine and cut through the library.... step1 though is getting 5 lotus for max speed (dragon horn comes later). i also keep a few chilli peppers and sunshroom and light it on fire for mini ravali's gale
Why didnt u just go to the library after the dining hall or the moblin with the royal claymore?
thanks for the awesome guide man, very informative!
Also. I don’t see the mask there. Do you think things were updated and I can’t do the things u do anymore? Or do I have to do this while playing the dlc. I literally just started playing.
This is part of the DLC. Make sure you have purchased the DLC. I'm using this method right now.

Quick tip: He is wrong about how weapons and gear are better as you progress through the game, Gear and Enemy Difficulty is based on a hidden experience mechanic in game, depending on how much experience you have depends on the gear mods you get, the gear you get from rusty variants, what weapons enemies hold and if enemies with their progression changed to True not False go up a color. How you obtain experience is by killing stronger variants of enemies, reds, blues, keese, chu chu's, octorocks and critters/animals dont give any experience. Anything else will give you a certain amount of experience. How ever, something to take note on, is that an enemy will only be able to give you the experience a certain amount of times, You would need to kill an enemy 10 times until they stop giving that experience. Lower rank Wizzrobes will only give 5.0 experience points (which is the lowest) while a Silver Lynel Will give 120.0 experience (which is the highest from a base enemy). For main story bosses, all Blight Ganons will give 300.0 each, Monk Maz koshia will give 500.0 and Dark Beast Ganon will give 800.0, but will only give these once per playthrough meaning you are unable to to kill a story boss 10 times as only the first time you kill it does it give you the XP. This means that you essentially cant grind out sliver lynels at all because as soon as you kill it 10 times you can no longer get XP from that specific enemy.
There are places in which dont give XP or dint contribute to the the kill count of 10, and also are affected by the amount of Divine Beasts you have conquered, and things that are set in place.
The Colosseum: The Colosseum's difficulty in enemies are based on the amount of Divine Beasts you have beaten.
Test of Strength Shrines: These Shrines will always have a set difficulty of the enemy and the only thing that will change is the RNG of their weapons and gear.
Red and blue Enemies: do not give experience and do not count towards any kill count
This XP cant be shown unless you look through the files that were datamined but your weapons can also be affected by this, upon reaching certain XP amounts Floor Drop weapons weill change, This change is made by the following (using boko weapons as an example):
Stage 1: Boko Club(no mod) > Boko Club (mod 1) > Boko Club (mod 2)
Stage 2: Spiked Boko Club(no mod) > Spiked Boko Club(mod 1) > Spiked Boko Club(mod 2)
Stage 3: DragonBone Boko Club(no mod) > DragonBone Boko Club(mod 1) > DragonBone Boko Club(mod 2)
After Stage 3 the weapon will be able to be determined randomly if the Boko Prefix is changed to the Moblin Prefix (which can change its overall stats) upon spawning in as a Floor Drop.
Mod 1 refers to the Weak Modifiers (white and blue) while Mod 2 refers to the Strong Modifiers (gold). The only Mods that dont come in blue or gold is the Critical Hit mod, which stays as white as its only function is to make the last hit in your combo a x2 critical hit.
Enemies will also drop more and better items when they are killed, if you have enough blue/black variants you will have a better chance at getting almost 3x as much loot and 2x the value of each item.
However, not all enemies can change. Take for example a bokoblin camp, in this camp there is 1 red bokoblin and 2 blue bokoblins. What decides if the enemy is progressive or not is if it has a True or False mechanic, if it is false, it will not be progressive thus making it unaffected by the the level system. If you gain XP that red bokoblin will progress from red all the way to silver however the blue variants will not because they are False. This explains why in later areas and in earlier areas of the game there are still reds and blues or a black or silver that has stayed like that from the start, it also explains why the Red Lynel will always stay a Red Lynel as it is the only lynel in the game to be False.

16:06 Wait why aren't those gold? Isn't this master mode? They're normally gold in master mode.
Random Gamer I'm assuming that you're referring to the Lizalfos and Moblin, so I think it may be due to the fact that Li hasn't progressed far in this run, therefore not allowing the enemies to get tougher, which would happen if the Divine Beast dungeons were cleared.
