The BIGGEST FLAW about Breath of the Wild's DLC

  • Although Breath of the Wilds DLC includes a lot of great rewards the player can obtain, a lot of these items can actually cause detriment to the overall pacing of this game with how overpowered they can be. So today, I thought I would go over which ones I thought were out of balance, and how they could have been improved!! I hope you enjoy!!

    2023 update:
So obviously this video is fairly old now, and I wanted to provide an updated opinion on the matter
I still think that the DLC is perfectly balanced and suited for Master Mode, as that was released alongside the DLC - but normal mode can easily be broken due to these early, OP rewards.
If a game is bought alongside the DLC, a lot of first time players will feel entitled to look up the locations of the loot that "they paid extra money for". This creates a first playthrough that undervalues key systems in the base game (getting attack armor super early, rushing the main story to get a motorcycle and better sword)
Now of course if you want to play this way, by all means, but it's the equivalent of sparknoting a book instead of just reading it.
I guess the main takeaway is that these rewards, with their elusiveness on how they are presented and earned, are balanced. But if you seek them out immediately using guides on a first time playthrough because "I bought this, I deserve it now", then you're gonna experience a pretty unbalanced playthrough that undervalues the base game.
TLDR: Experience this game as blind as possible because it's worth it, and if you bought the DLC with it I recommend letting those rewards/quests come to you naturally instead of looking up where they are

    • @Croton
      @Croton  Год назад +28

I should add that being able to get some of this OP loot early is GREAT for challenge running in subsequent playthroughs! For these, the less prerequisites the better, and BotW has achieved well in this by making a lot of it's rewards not hard to get, but rather hard to find - which increases the replayability for challenge runs and using different things!

tbh if you're only installing DLC after almost completion, you'd likely already have armours with the same effects but higher stats anyway, and that renders the DLC armours only valuable for appearance and as collectables.

imo the royal guard set is one of the best utility outfits in the game. It shows that it just reduces charge attack stamina usage on the menu, but in reality it also reduces the stamina usage on dashing in water and jumping while climbing, which makes sense as it was worn by the most elite soldiers in hyrule. This makes it great as an all in one stamina set.

I think the DLC is meant to be played after at least defeating all the Divine Beasts, considering you can't do the champion's ballad without doing so. Even though I played BOTW a year after the DLC came out, I waited until I beat it before I got it, and felt like it added a whole new layer to the game.
Because they added the DLC a year after BOTW came out, I feel like they designed it to be used AFTER the player has been playing for a while, not bought with the game and used right away.
Edit: but I fully agree that items like the Phantom armor and Majora's mask made some other items pretty useless.

dude there are quite a lot of guardians around those phantom armor set locations. most new players are not gonna get those right away, hell its super risky even trying till you are either a pro at parrying or have some ancient arrows, so typically you have to get as far as akala and hateno which by then you can easily have 2 star soldier armor which has higher defense. that's not too early considering unlike barbarian or fierce deity set you cannot upgrade the phantom set. so then you can choose between higher defense or attack power and you have 2 decent armor sets till you can get those other sets upgraded which tbh first timers who explore and have fun wont likely get the phantom set for at least 20-30 hours if they ever find the set at all. i never got the set till around 25 hours then i managed to get enough ancient stuff to craft the ancient helmet then i had 2 star soldier set i would pair with the helmet for guardians and the phatom set for most encounters. its not game breaking at all unless you are multiple playthroughs in and are some psycho who drops off the plateau and immediately runs after those pieces like a crazy person with only 4 hearts.

The first part of your comment is true, but that doesn't mean proper game balance isn't essential for a better experience. You can play it how you want, but introducing options that are objectively better than almost everything else in the game (especially early on) can make it unsatisfying to overcome challenges in your own way.

Coming from someone who easily got sick of managing horses and only keeping the ones with the best stats, I loved the addition of the master cycle, and I thought it's placement at the very end of the game if you're willing to go through all of the trials is very fitting and doesn't break the game. The horses were fun at first though they got extremely tiring and painful later on. I found myself enjoying the game more using quick travel, but when I got the master cycle I actually found it much more fun to ride around the map instead of quick travel.
I agree with the phantom armor and majora's mask being broken and easy to obtain, I personally didn't like that at all, though I think it would have been best to make it so you had to defeat one or two divine beasts first before being able to dig up their chests. Those DLC armor sets are the only thing I agree on in this though, as the Master sword is the Hero's weapon, in almost every other game it is his main weapon, and I love the feeling of holding the master sword in BOTW.
You could say all of this about the hylian shield as well, a shield that's seemingly unbreakable to a casual player who doesn't like to fight 20 guardians at a time, it ruins progression and eliminates need for other shields unless you want to shield surf better. But if the Hylian Shield (which was dead easy to get) is fine, then I don't see what's wrong with the master sword upgrade which you work extremely hard for upon getting the master sword. A casual playthrough may not even do the trial of the sword if it's too difficult.

Going to disagree with the claim of the upgrade Master Sword replacing the weapon cycling combat loop. Not counting players who intentionally glitch the game to gain access early, most players casual will probably end up clearing most shrines in the game before being able to beat the Trial of the Sword. If a player is skilled enough to beat the Trial early they by all means deserve access to the upgraded Master Sword as they have clearly shown a mastery of the game's systems.
That being said, there are also weapons that outclass the Master Sword in endgame so there is a good chance that casual players will already have access to stronger weapons by the time they beat the Trial and experienced players would likely be taking full advantage of them.

I think you're looking at these from a "pro's perspective" and completely discounting Hero/Master Mode. After learning the game's combat mechanics and becoming at least mildly consistent with triggering Flurry Rush, the game is effectively trivial with or without this DLC. The only difference beyond this point is how often you need to swap weapons, and if you've effectively mastered the game, why NOT be rewarded by having the tedium of weapon swapping reduced?
Don't get me wrong, I love the combat mechanics they've added in BOTW along with the weapon management, but I don't understand how any of these rewards "break" the game. The Trial of the Sword was BRUTAL in Master Mode. Every floor made my heart beat faster than the last and I was SO PUMPED when I finally beat it. Your biggest factor in success is your level of skill. If you can't get a hang of the mechanics, you're going to struggle.

    • @CaptainCFalcon
      @CaptainCFalcon 4 года назад +35

Yeah. It'd be nice if there was some sort of mid-game/late-game challenge you could do to unlock the ability to upgrade the DLC equipment.
For example, after you've found the last Great Fairy, you show her the armor, but she doesn't recognize the materials or something. So you go to the Hateno village scientist lady, & she examines them. You don't have the set she's examining, because she's still doing it. However, since this is later in the game, it shouldn't be a problem, since you'll have other equipment to make up for it.
After a few in-game days, you can talk to her again, & she'll tell you where you can find the materials for it. They'll be special limited materials unique to the set, & you only need to upgrade the set once for it to be maxed out.

You should check out LevelUp Royal's suggested game play sequence with the DLC expansion pack. Straight off the Great Plateau, he goes to Lake Hylia to collect Staminoka Bass, then the Lake Tower to get that part of the map. Then to the Taobab Grassland to catch a 5-Star Speed Horse and ride it to the Horse God Shrine to begin collect the Ancient Horse Gear to be able to teleport your horse in the game. He then concentrates on getting the Phantom Ganon Armor to give increased stealth optimal for catching critters for food and armor buffs and for having Bone Attack Up with Dragonbone Moblin Clubs. He emphasizes first gathering Hearty Durians and Mighty Bananas in the Faron Region to cook during Blood Moons. So, he basically comes up with a different strategy for approaching the game using only modest buffs from the DLC that allow the player to escape the usual drudgery of trudging to Dueling Peaks, then to Kakariko Village, and on to Hateno Village straight off, etc., relatively underprepared for some of the bad guys that one encounters along the way. By roaming the countryside to collect food buffs, weapons, and armor just from the regular game, one can later face the challenges of the Divine Beasts a bit more prepared than one does by the standard route that the game leads you on. And whereas the standard game play encourages you to avoid combat unless necessary because it upgrades your enemy level, he teaches fight ~everyone you meet to get to the silver enemies and start collecting the rewards from that. Rather than learning the best way to hide out in the game and sneak around, he teaches the best strategies for taking any enemies on. Too bad LevelUp Royal seems to have departed from this world. But any monster he ever saw carrying a Dragonbone Moblin Club is doomed at that moment. He teaches you how to raid Hyrule Castle after only completing Divine Beast Van Medoh and puts Woodland Tower and Korok Forest a lot earlier in the game, too, with a big emphasis on maxxing Korok seed collection along the way to upgrade inventory slots to hold all the regular weapon booty being hauled in. He ~cleans out every region that he leads you to for the Korok seeds.

Which it might be, to some, and I personally think it's not an "easy" game, but without some level of difficulty, the player will not be encouraged to explore and leverage the different options and tools that the game gives. If all it takes to get through the game is run-and-slash then most players would be missing out on 95% of the fun that the game has to offer.

i got phantom set 25 hours in after i already had 2 star soldier and taken down a divine beast. its good mid game armor but not late game. not only is it locked behind riddles but surrounded by guardians. unless you are super stealthy, a pro at parrying or have ancient arrows its super risky going after that set. ancient arrows means you already hit hateno and went through zoras domain to reach akkala. you can easily have 2 star soldier armor and have taken down a divine beast before getting that armor set. thats the most likely route to it for new players.

I guess that the point about phantom armor does make sense, given how OP it is early game, but I feel that the rest of the argument doesn't make sense at all. By the time you're skilled enough to be able to do all 3 trials, you've certainly earned it and would be able to breeze through any other combat encounters in the game, but also in late mid - end game, your goal, or at least mine, was to get the best stats possible. A maxed attack up savage lynel sword does more than 40 damager more than the fully powered master sword, and can even be given infinite durability through glitches. Horses becoming irrelevant is ok and just makes quality of life better, as you cant traverse up hills and they sometimes misbehave a lot more than you'd like. Additionally, by the time you've gotten all the divine beasts and done all the champions' ballad stuff, you've certainly learned movement mechanics such as windbombing and BTBs/BLSS, which makes the master cycle irrelevant anyways. In terms of pacing, I think that the actual big DLC stuff, not the chests, are totally fine. Most players need to be strong enough to at least beat ganon (which is really easy if you just bow spam) to complete the DLC, but if you were to make memories a pre-requisite then almost no casual players would come back to try it out as doing memories sucks and is SUPER boring. Anyways I think that you really modeled your opinion after only hardcore fans who would completely finish the game anyways, but somehow also dont know movement tech and also dont use glitches to get infinite durability on much stronger weapons.

The dlc armor ended up feeling useless besides one piece: the korok mask. Before getting it, I had more shrine than korok seed. But the sound. There was a time when playing when I didn't know if a korok was near or I was just hallucinating the sound.
It doesn't anymore but the main issue I'm having with it is that, when playing the game, I wanted these korok seed for my inventory and bit the bullet and had the korok mask as a permanent headpiece. It still took exploring most of the map to collect 450 seed.

I disagree the is a MUST in traditional Zelda game but BOTW is built around exploration and cycling through different ways to kill enemies. BOTW its built around a severely different system of combat that kind of revolves around exploration to find weapons if you just relied on the master sword it kinda throws a wrench into the system instead of searching for good weapons (like the royal claymore) or fighting for them (like with any dragon bone monster club or lynell weapons) you just finish a fight maybe break the sword if so wait for it to recharge and go on. theirs no need to search to search for any other weapons. even if a lynall crusher does around 100 damage the fully upgraded master sword has tons more lifetime damage than the crusher. and since it only takes ten minutes to recharge there's no real reason to obtain any other weapons. now in late game like say after you beat ganon and gotten the true ending. this is completely fine. you've already been collecting differing weapons throughout what you've already played. and having to do it ALL the time even after ganon can get stale. but by having the fully upgraded master sword at your disposal it takes away the need to search which is a very nice reward. but this is just my opinion

My counterpoint to all of this is that even at the release time of this video, what constituted an “average player” is a far more skill-advanced player than any amount of DLC could make a noticeable dent to. Obtaining a pseudo Barb armor very early on is monstrously powerful, yes, but so is booking it to hyrule castle immediately and abusing Sneakstrike and parry to get an inventory of Tri-Boomerangs and guardian parts. The first time player isn’t *skilled* enough to make truly effective use of the phantom armor anyway, and any skilled player straightup doesn’t need it to punch above the intended weight class in combat

The problem with storing all powerful DLC stuff to after end credits, is that for players who generally only play throught an entire game once, it's as good as non-existant. And considering the massive size of BotW and the time it takes to complete one playthrough, I won't be surprised if anyone decides it's not worthwhile to play through it again.
Players would feel cheated with buying a $20 DLC, only to find it unavailable until 100hrs in/speedrun to credits. Although I agree that phantom gears and majora's mask are broken and shouldn't exist in the first place, the rest of the stuff is fine where they are.

It's good to have to work hard and get intimate with the game's mechanics, while only periodically getting slightly better gear, instead of having a quest for early game god-armor preloaded. Sure, if you're really not that good at the core combat mechanics, it's a nice crutch to get a footing, but if you're not willing to take risks and play without, you'll never experience the true variety of the game's features. Plus, like the video stated, these DLC items have fiddled with the already delicate balance of the main game items, armors, and mechanics, in such a way that a lot of these have been made trivial.

@@starboost7333 I actually think that Majora's mask is pretty broken in master mode too, since it replaces the role of more strategic ideas, such as using electricity based attacks like thunderblades and shock arrows to disarm enemies and steal their weapons. It also somewhat breaks the path to Zora's domain, since the lizalfos just won't care to attack. The insane 24 defense buff will make most weaker enemies, who should be dealing 1 to 1.5 hearts, deal only a quarter of a heart, breaking the difficulty curve.
Imagine you begin a file, then pick up the set soon after jumping off the plateau. Besides weather resistances, you have no reason to ditch the armour until very late game, and all of the enemies will become cakewalks.

I can sort of agree with the Phantom armor and Majoras mask.
I think the Phantom armor should be hidden away in hyrule castle
And Majora's mask should be a gift from Kilton after you buy everything in his store.
But getting the powered up master sword and the master cycle are hard enough as it is.
No new player is going to rush all divine beasts to get the master cycle, or randomly complete all the trials of the sword.
You don't exactly stumble into these things as a noob.
The Sword trials are three very unforgiving series of fights where you have no equipment, pretty much eventide island, except 20 times as long and 20 times as difficult.
If you have the skill and patience to complete that, you deserve the powered up master sword.
The Master Cycle was so horribly tedious.
    1. Beat every single divine beast
    2. Go to the great plateau and do the one hit obliterator challenge
    3. Complete 4 new, difficult shrines with only a quarter heart
    4. Go back to a divine beast and figure out which points on the map are where
    5. Do 3 challenges
    6. Do 3 difficult shrines
    7. Beat the blight boss with limited equipment
    8. Repeat steps 4, 5, 6 and 7 three more times
    9. Go back to the great plateau and do a new divine beast
    10. Fight one of the hardest bosses in the game
All that, and THEN you get the master cycle, pretty deserved if you ask me.

i almost entirely disagree, especially now that the DLC has had its time to age. Majora's Mask and the phantom armor i can still agree with, but your evaluation of the major rewards bugs me. BotW has NEVER been about railroading your progression, as anyone with experience with the game can beat ganon immediately after the great plateau, and i even did it in my first run after 2 DBs out of pure curiosity, so locking the DLC content behind a "post game" makes zero sense, especially as it would be the only thing in the world to have changed, making for a strange time displacement paradox feel that just results in the DLC feeling even more detached from the main game than it already is.
To break down the major rewards, a full power master sword is already restricted to mid game, by which point surviving raids on hyrule castle is well within all player's abilities, and the trial to unlock the sword when ignoring OoB glitches ensures that players are qualified to wield it. If a player can survive the waves and waves of enemies in environments where they thrive with very limited resources, it makes sense that the reward would replace the same resource management of weapons as they have conquered the game's toughest weapon management challenge. The sooner the player accomplishes the challenge, the more skills and strategy they had to show and implement to reach it, so doing it early is just as valid a challenge as doing it at full power.
The master cycle zero has practically the reverse problem. There is no harm in making the horse mechanics obsolete when you consider that horses were already made obsolete by shrine-based fast travel which did not even need the shines to be completed to use and is unlocked BEFORE horses. Horses are exclusively for exploring new territory, and when you consider that all 4 DBs heavily restrict the use of the horse, why bother in the first place? ( *expansion tangent, can skip if understand the point* horses are not even allowed to enter gerudo desert. death mountain is literally on fire, as well as being entirely uphill on rough terrain. Zora's river is constantly experiencing thunderstorms on first visit to prevent players from climbing up the rocky cliffs and riverbanks, which are already the bane of horses, combined with speedy lizalfos everywhere who dont care about the existence of the horse means it is not worth it to bring one in the first place. Finally you have rito village, which is the only one that is even potentially worth bringing a horse for, but combined with limited stables, overly restrictive whistle mechanic, and the need to activate shrines for fast travel in the first place that plague horse mechanics to begin with makes the trip a bit easier on foot. *tangent end* ) So with a cumbersome horse mechanic that is rarely worth the effort, the master cycle fixes all the problems horses have, while not replacing them when it comes time for the horseback challenges. But as before mentioned, shine based fast travel is unlocked before even horses, and yet the master cycle is only a step in between horses and fast travel in usefulness, so why is there such a heavy restriction on it again? You must have completed the story for the trial to unlock the master cycle to begin, and by that point the player will have found all the fast travel points they need, so all that is left is korok and shrine hunting, and raiding hyrule castle. Notice how only one of the things on that list is mandatory, yet hyrule castle prevents summoning the cycle anyway.
The progression to unlock the master cycle really should have been changed; start with the individual DB challenges and unlock them once the corresponding DB has been tamed, and only after clearing all 4 rematches can the plateau trial begin. completing the plateau trial then results in returning the 1HO to the shrine of resurrection, which reveals the 5th DB. It does not fix the problems the cycle has on the overworld, but it does flow better and give players the option to unlock the champion upgrades at more convenient times. Since the champion upgrades are exclusively reducing the cooldowns, it does not change the gameplay for players at all. If the player doesnt upgrade the powers, they will just wait the extra time for skills to recharge before doing anything challenging, and if it takes enough time for the players to recharge the upgraded skills mid-boss fight, they needed the help anyway and would have stalled until they recharged even if not upgraded.
The only way to truly fix the master cycle would have been to unlock it sooner, but lock most of its functions behind re-conquering the DBs. (smaller fuel tank? limited summoning time? doesnt negate fall damage until challenge is complete? IDK...)

I don’t think your idea was the best way to handle the problem. You see, if the players have done everything than getting all the overpowered stuff would be meaningless because they would be working for (example) an upgrade for the master sword, but why? They already did everything so why would they need a better sword or a bike so you can go to places that you’ve already been to. I do know what you mean, do three labyrinths and you get three orbs and attack up armour or go to central hyrule avoid a bunch of guardians and get a memory and attack up armour. Go to a colosseum fight a lynel and get attack up armour and I can’t even remember where the last one is. Nintendo tried to make the bike a midgame item

I see where you're getting at with the late unlock idea but I feel like a lot of that would be like with the Onimusha series that goes "Here, you have finally completed what you need to earn the best weapon in the game! Enjoy. Oh by the way there's like ten minutes of gameplay left. Cheers."

This is my issue with a lot of "end game" items. I don't think it should be easy to get the best gear near the beginning of the game, but I think it should be possible.
When this game first came out it was praised for solving the problem of people running into late game areas right away and getting game breaking items. But I feel like that was never a problem. If someone has the knowledge and ability to do that, why not let them? It can be fun it destroy a game with overpowered gear.
The loot that's just sitting in Hyrule field should be harder to get though.

    • @shsltrash820
      @shsltrash820 4 года назад +2

Makaque I think the point was if you could get past the guardians then you earned it. Cause early game in hyrule field? Your weapons will run out before it dies and it’s a field, you can’t run away cause their faster and theirs nowhere to really hide once it sees you, your pretty much dead.

My main beef with the dlc was that the rewards were perfectly suited to master mode, but the challenges you need to complete don’t have weapons that are properly scaled for the challenge. So what ends up happening is that you are forced in to just swapping back and forth between bombs in order to stop your weapons from breaking… this gets old really fast. Basically, the minimum weapon type should’ve been a spiked book club in the master mode dlc challenges, not a normal book club. They should’ve also either given you one or two more weapon copies in the blight rematches, or at least increased their durability.
Seriously, bomb swapping is just not fun when it’s the only way to complete a challenge in a game who’s main selling point was its freedom. I hope the sequel fixes master mode by installing some system to limit how much link can heal during combat instead of the whole enemy healing mechanic. It would still keep the game difficult without completely nerfing your freedom by forcing you into one play style

@Slion IKR! For the master cycle, you have to live on 1HP and kill a multitude of enemies. And then do shrines. Still on 1HP. Oh, did I mention rematching Waterblight with 5 arrows? Oh yeah, the Trial of the Sword! You have to fight multiple boss battles, and a ton of enemies with weapons that pretty much almost take away one eighth of your health because you don’t get any armour until far in. Once I get to that one that takes place two floors after the Stone Talus, it’s all over, because the Lizalfos on that one have weapons that do so much damage without armour! “Hands them out like candy”. NO! LITERALLY NO!

I feel like alot of the things you can get early on effect second playthroughs more than first playthroughs. Any new player will probably not have much knowledge of botw, so alot of the items will most likely be really hard to find for new players, even if they find the book that basically says where they are. The phantom set is hidden in very dangerous places that most new players will not go to, or will die trying. The trial of the sword and master cycle honestly fit ok, as you need to get through the game before you have the skill or ability to get them. The upgraded master sword honestly feels ok due to how hard it is to get, and how it feels like something for people who are REALLY good. The master cycle is gotten so late into the game that it doesnt feel like cheating. I do admit they undermine horses very harshly, and the master cycle could have had some different drawbacks to compensate. The other thing i completely agree with is majora's mask. They could have hid the mask alot better, as unlike the phantom armor, the mask isnt in an insanely dangerious place. It makes alot of the game easier than it should be and undermines kilton. They could have hid it somewhere else that is much harder to find, or just implement it a different way. I feel the video assumes a new player knows about the game's world right out the gate, which is not very accurate to how a new person would engage with this game. This is still a very cool video that highlights a major flaw though.

  • @AbilShey
    @AbilShey 2 года назад +1

I really agree on the majoras mask. One of the things that disappoints me the most is when youtubers start a new save file for some challenge and the first thing they do after leaving the plateau is getting the majoras mask, cuz then it just sets the video expectations really low. Makes me wish that you couldn't just get it after leaving the plateau, like perhaps making it be a reward from Kilton after buying all of the masks he sells.

i got phantom set 25 hours in after i already had 2 star soldier and taken down a divine beast. its good mid game armor but not late game. not only is it locked behind riddles but surrounded by guardians. unless you are super stealthy, a pro at parrying or have ancient arrows its super risky going after that set. ancient arrows means you already hit hateno and went through zoras domain to reach akkala. you can easily have 2 star soldier armor and have taken down a divine beast before getting that armor set. thats the most likely route to it for new players.

i usually just use self discipline to avoid exploiting OP items. its the same principle behind challenge runs really. but certain OP items should probably have some warning for new players to let them know that this item is meant for later in the game. maybe by having a very soft level "requirement" on the items, not to stop them from using it, but to help them know they probably shouldnt yet.
