Great video! I wanted a used 21 or 22 supercrew with 6.5 bed and four wheel drice and XLT MID with heavy duty payload package or HDPP. Never found one used in the layout i wanted. Ended up with a used Powerboost in XLT High and more options than i would have liked. 40k miles now and mostly highway at 75 to 85 mph where allowed and about 20% around town. Only towed a couple of times and off road less than 100 miles total. MPGS to date...21.5. Likes...power is incredible and i powered my house 3 times during extended outages of 1 to 3 days. Also XLT High is a very comfortable truck. Love the big towing mirrors and led lights etc. Dislikes...dismal payload of 1360 pounds means i cant put in a used 6.5 foot slide in pop up camper. I am not a fan of 20 inch rims, moon roof etc. Wish i could have a power fold for mirrors. I would trade this truck for a used F150 HDPP equipped one if it had the right options. Otherwise, i will drive this fast and fuel sipping beast till it breaks. I wouldn't buy a powerboost for mpgs but more so for camping and house power as it does those tasks very well. If you do lots of city driving a Powerboost is a great choice. To me a 3.5 or 5 l are what I would go with for truck camper and best fuel economy laden and lower engine and tranny temps with a 3.73 axle if you can find them.
I've got a 2015 3.5. Loved it. But i bought a 5L in 2021. No regret. She's a Lariat. 1692 pounds payload. And what a great roar. Don't have to worry a out the turbos. My friend had a 2016 3.5 and he has to change both turbos at 120,000 m.
I went from the 2.7 to the 5.0. Fuel economy is worse, but the engine is a lot nicer. It’s smoother, matches better with the transmission (less jerky) and sounds amazing.
yup, the 2.7 had 3.55 gears, the other two were 3.73. Also, regarding payload, the 2.7 had 6600# GVWR, the 5.0 had 7200#, and the PB was #7400. As an RV owner, I need high payload, that 19xxlb payload on the 5.0 was exciting... LOL. plus, my daily commute (~100 miles round trip) I would rather have the 5.0. However, for RV life, having the PB with the 7.2kw in the bed is tough to pass up.
@jerryshobbies8224 i agree sir. I love my Powerboost but isn't intend to buy it. Would still prefer a heavy duty payload package truck though but very tough to find a 21 or 22 XLT Supercrew with the options I want in a used truck. Very sad that Ford stopped making them in 23.
i just bought a 24’ 2.7, i agree the shifting is rough, especially when the trans downshifts to a stop at a red light. i notice from time to time a big clunk when the truck approaches a stop.
Very cool video comparing all 3 trucks with the different powertrains. I also appreciate how all 3 trucks were within $2000 of each other on the MSRP. True apples to apples comparison. If it’s my money, I’m going with the 5.0 V8 and as an added bonus you would get the best payload number of the bunch!
Owned a 2016 XLT with a 5.0 litre. All I ever did was put gas in it and routine maintenance. Sold it 8 years later with 130,000 miles on it. Never had a moment of trouble with it.
15K mi on our 3.5 powerboost. We tow a 5th wheel travel trailer occasionally which is why we bought this truck. This powertrain torque down low is really impressive and empty fuel economy is outstanding, 27-28. Having 7200 watts of power on board is awesome. In town is where the hybrid fuel economy shines. We drove this truck all over Tucson for 5 days and made it 800 miles on a single tank of fuel. Ford knocked it out of the park with this truck!
The 2.7 is incredibly underrated. Nobody ever put that type of engine in a full sized pick up until ford. I just hit 90k on my 2020 F150 2.7. Never a check engine light or was in the shop. The best engine I think if you’re not going to tow daily.
I recently purchased a ‘24 STX 4x4 with the 5.0. It’s currently in the shop getting some cosmetic issues taken care of so I’ve been driving a loaner STX with the 2.7. While I can’t really complain about the 2.7, the driving experience is 10x better with the 5.0. The 2.7 will get up and go, but you really need the boost from the turbos so it feels like you have to get more on the throttle. The 5.0 just feels to take far less effort to achieve the same acceleration. I’ve yet to really stretch the legs on the 5.0 on a long drive but did get 23.8 mpg on a 45 mile highway drive cruising 73 mph the day after getting it which is right on par with Fords rating. The added bonus of the 5.0 is the beautiful sound of its exhaust. Something the 2.7 will never have.
Great comment. Thanks for giving that perspective. Nice truck by the way ! You will probably like a video. I’m going to post here in the next few weeks about a coyote.
To be fair, the middle one (with the lower payload) didn't have the 3.73 gears the other 2 did. With that, it should have similar if not greater payload.
The PowerBoost engine is the 3.5 ecoboost engine with an electric motor added between the transmission and engine. Ford could not get rid of the 3.5. For this reason.
Excellent Vid. Love those trucks except the exterior. They look so basic. Doesn't look at cool as the competition these days. I'd love to see them come out with a 5.0 V8 with powerboost. Having the generator is a huge additional feature specially for folks in Florida with hurricanes. Having the A/C compressor be electric is awesome. Can keep the car cool when the engine is not running. In Florida when Power goes out we can use the truck and not have to worry about having a separate generator. I'd love to see it in a 5.0 V8 configuration.
you mentioned a little rougher shifting in the 2.7L when both have the same 10R80 transmission, that can all be reset- or programmed out, dealer can adjust the shifting from the software, that particular truck you were driving probably just needed reprogramming(Adjustment)
Thanks for the awesome video!! Knowing that there is only a 1 mph difference I will definitely going with the 5.0! Waaaaay more to go wrong with the ecoboost and not to mention the cost to replace the battery on the Powerboost! Keeping my next truck for many years so going with the reliable coyote!
Nicely done sir!! 😁 Only problem it made the decision even harder, LOL. Mileage vs. 2.7 folks love vs reliable V8 vs. generator on wheels vs. heart loving V8's with dual exhaust!!! 😜
Great review, thank you for the information. I'm currently renting a Powerboost version (courtesy of Enterprise), while my car is in the shop. I was never into pickup trucks and have never been in the market for one living in suburban NJ. However, as Enterprise only had this, a Ram pickup (hate Chrysler products) and a Corolla available for rent, I figured I'd give the F150 PB a go. Though I've only had it for less than 12 hours, I'm amazed that this thing as actually more fuel efficient than our 24 MDX SH-AWD. Needless to say, we may look to add this to our 'fleet' within the next year or so.
You forgot to mention what gearing each of the trucks was. Im really impressed with the 5.0 mpg. With how high the payload was im thinking it was the 3.73. Same with the PB as 3.73 is standard. Curious about the 2.7. Great video.
Hi! I’m thinking of getting a used F-150 as daily work truck. I have a commute of 40 mile one-way (1.5 hrs) then another 1hr drive home in horrid SoCal traffic. I haul mostly network cabling installation equipment in the bed, and do not tow. What model year, engine and grade do you recommend? I would like to have some of the newer active safety features such as the automatic emergency braking system to avoid front collisions, but not as critical as long-term reliability and durability. Any suggestions for a late model F-150 with Direct and Port Injection. Also, what immediate and affordable engine and transmission mods for reliability and durability are recommended? I’m not looking for more power, just long-term reliability and durability as I don’t have too much money and need a truck for work and personal use. Thank you!
The coyote v8 is fun and loud but its not the best truck engine. It was designed as a muscle car engine. The 3.5 and 2.7 are built for trucks. 3.5 still has stupid issues but it pulls well. 2.7 is bulletproof and a solid choice.
I am glad you brought that up! I love the 5.0l also and I do think it is so much better from a useable torque curve from when the engine was originally launched...with that being said I think low end torque day to day liveability is far better on the 2.7l and 3.5l!
Here is a question I cannot answer myself online! I see the 5.0 in the video with the 19xx lb. payload only has the tow package and NOT the max tow package. What components would the max tow package have added to the truck and would it have reduced the payload some? Build and price doesn’t always tell you what the packages include. Thanks in advance for your answer!!
2.7 will do better overall than the 5.0. Highway is highway, most driving is city or around town so the 2.7 will beat the 5.0 in the long run in terms of MPG's.
Not sure about that, turbos dump a lot of fuel at hwy speeds. I have a Chevy 2.7 and it does really great in the 55-65mph range. But 75+ mph and it’s pretty bad, like 14-16mpg. My ‘13 f150 with the 5.0 gets 17.5mpg at 75mph.
@@nickschaps4022 the turbos don’t “dump” a lot of fuel at 75mph, I drove 1300 mi on a trip at that speed and got 24.4, 25.6 mpg. Ford f150, 2018, supercrew, 2.7. Maybe that’s the way chevy is set up, but not my ford..
5.0 Simple? It has cylinder deactivation which the other 2 do not. Another thing, dont believe the MPG readout. On throttle off coasting, the ICE only engines shut off the fuel. The hybrid helps when on throttle by not starting the engine.
Cylinder deactivation is exactly why I wouldn't buy one now. GM and Ram have it and they're all basically the same design, expect a lot of lifter and camshaft failures
@@wasupfool5692Cylinder deactivation being the cause is a common myth. The new 7.3 Godzilla has had serious lifter issues - no cylinder deactivation to blame. For the Hemi’s, it seems more related to VVT. Overall it seems like a higher volume oil pump would help more than anything else.
Love the channel! I’m in the market for a new truck and your videos are very helpful! I’m also a Michigan guy living near AA. I pull a 7.5k lb camper about 6 times a year so payload is important. What is it that gave the 5.0 over 1900 lbs? A specific pkg or something? That’s the best payload I’ve seen on a 1/2 ton and I’ve been paying attention to that for several years. Thanks!
The 2.7 obviously. My 2022 F-150 2.7 Stx on oem 33's gets almost 27 mpgs @ 65 with A/C on. I was blown away by that. I'm not sure why yours is so low. Mine was gps/odo & top off method proven. Right off the lot brand new. Although I drove 100 miles home. Your drive is way shorter
All the engines are good. So that’s not of any importance to me. You can’t go wrong with any of them. What’s more important to me is the chrome appearance package with the shifter on the column which I have on my 21 XLT 302A package. Ford has now taken that away from the XLT and has made it to where you have to step up to a lariat which I refuse to do because of the shifter placement being in the counsel area. I will be keeping my 21 until they bring back the chrome grill to the XLT.
@CTECH-REVIEW I'm sorry but an 18 mile loop is not enough for an accurate fuel consumption test imo.Atleast 50 miles with a considerable portion of stop and go would be ideal
You'll see them for 10k+ off msrp soon. Buying a new truck will (almost) make sense again, like before 2021. My 2019 stx f150 had an msrp over 47k. I paid 35k, which was only 1k less than the advertised price. You'll be seeing new xlt f150s back in the upper 40k range before the end of this year unless the government interferes with the trajectory of the car/truck market.
i am following the channel and a new subscriber. I would like to buy a 2024 Ford F-150. There are two 5.0L V8 engines available in Saudi Arabia and a 3.5V6 turbo engine. Which one is better in terms of mechanical problems, less fuel consumption, and long-term service? I would love to hear your opinion and the opinion of the users.
Wow great question and thanks for the sub! That’s a tough question. Both engines are great in different ways. I think the 21+ 3.5 is legit. The new 5.0 seems decent too. If I did a lot of highway I would lean to the 5.0. For more city or heavy towing the 3.5
This is not an accurate test. You can’t go by the tucks computer for accurate mpg calculations? You have to use a calculator and refill each truck after your loop. You’d find the onboard computers are very inaccurate. The rear’s also make a huge impact 3.31 vs 3.73 etc….
Hand calculated is always best. The powerboost and 5.0 both had 3.73 gears. 2.7l had 3.55 gears. Feel free to check out the rest of my channel. I had some videos comparing different gearing mile per gallon loops with the 5.0.! Thanks for watching!
Not knocking any of these engines, my 2017 2.7 had a 3.55 rear 20.4 mpg and 6 speed, my 2023 has a 2.7 3.73 rear with the 10 speed and I’m getting about .60/ 21 mpg, better with the 3:73 rear. Pulls my 4,600 pound camper a lil better, but the 10 speed ain’t as smooth. I’m a Grandpaw and I’ve always driven like one, even 40 years ago.
I don't think the Power Boost F-150 is a good idea in places that have extreme heat or cold, which is basically all over the place. That battery adds weight, complexity & a higher price tag & will not really do it's job in extreme climates. It does seem like a good idea as an overland truck for camping & stuff with all of it's outlets & things. I'm still sticking w/my 3.5L F-150 for now.
You ran tge 2.7L at 70 on the highway the other 2 you ran at 69. I have had 2 - 2.7L, 2-P.B's 1 3.5L E.B. and 1 5.0L Only the 1 2.7 and 1 3.5 L had the 10 speeds and obviously both P.B.'s had the 10 speeds. That 1 mph on the highway makes a 1 mpg difference Drop that 2.7 to 69 mph and you'd be about 22 mpg's.
The 5.0 is not a simple engine just because it doesn't have turbos. The 5.0 has had problems since 2018 and they continue to add unnecessary technology to it. Plasma arc cylinder lining, stop/start, cylinder deactivation and belt driven oil pump. It's far from simple. Except for cam phasors the best year 5.0 is probably from 15'-17'.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate your comments. I will keep that in mind for future comparison videos. I don’t work for any dealerships so I’m just trying to share my insights.
Anyone buying a full size truck and worrying about mpg doesn't need a full size truck. The 5.0 is the way to go for reliability and cost of ownership over a long time
Nothing wrong with saving $$$ at the gas pumps whenever you can.I have a full size truck and given the cost of fuel today,a penny saved is a penny earned
5l and 3.5L both had 3.73 gears. the 2.7L had 3.55 gears not apples to apples the 2.7L will run lower rpm and do better with that 3.55 ratio. the 3.73 is better for towing. lol then you compare a 3.7L hybrid real apples to apples lmao lol lol
Thanks for the comment. I will do another video with different gearing ratios once they get more in stock. I have done both in the past if you take a look at some of my 2023 reviews on these trucks.
These trucks would be reliable if they kept their tried and true 6 speed, then they got rid of something good for a ticking time bomb of a 10 speed transmission. Also they have belt driven oil pumps, just another cheap part to have the truck grenade itself. Built Ford Cheap. Beautiful looking trucks but unfortunately beauty doesn’t translate into quality and reliability. No thanks 👎
The 5.0 does the work gets decent gas mileage but sounds exactly what a truck needs to sound like. I actually enjoy driving it. So it’s the 5.0 for me!
All very good engines and all good fuel economy for a full-size crew cab pick up. I'll go with the 5.0 and the added payload that it offers.
Heck ya!!

Great comment! Thanks for watching. Very nice truck!!
Simjake I am looking for the exact same truck but Ford doesn’t seem to want to build one.
2.7 is way better on fuel, but id go with the 5 litre although i did love my 2.7. It always got around 4 or 5mpg better than the 5 litre and the 3.5
Did you have a 5.0 also? What year? 4 mpg is a big improvement!
@@mclroy I have a 2.7 and I don’t worry about the turbos either
5.0 vs 3.5TT in an F150 is always a tough choice. I probably would choose the 3.5 twin turbo ecoboost
It sure is a tough choice
Yep. I went with the eco boost in2022 just for towing my travel trailer
Another thing to note, that 5.0 has a 3.73 rear. If it had the 3.31 it would probably be the highest... Simply amazing
Thanks for watching. I need to go back and look I thought all the trucks had the exact same gear ratio
yup, the 2.7 had 3.55 gears, the other two were 3.73.
Thank you for the comments! I tried to compare as close as equal as possible! Huge bonus is pay load with 5.0l!
Owned a 2016 XLT with a 5.0 litre. All I ever did was put gas in it and routine maintenance. Sold it 8 years later with 130,000 miles on it. Never had a moment of trouble with it.
5.0l is a great engine!
I agree! Thanks for watching, and nice truck!
2023 with 4 thousand miles on it I found and bought it. 2.7 in it, plenty of power and driving 65 I see 28 mpg quite often, not always.
Heck ya great motor
The 2.7 is incredibly underrated. Nobody ever put that type of engine in a full sized pick up until ford. I just hit 90k on my 2020 F150 2.7. Never a check engine light or was in the shop. The best engine I think if you’re not going to tow daily.
2.7l is my favorite do everything well motor in the f150.
90k miles and you are claiming to be a good truck 😬
@@EivinSukoi Absolutely, best selling for 47 years too.
It's the Drone deactivation cylinders sound on 5.0 normal
Thanks for watching!
5.0 for reliability and longevity
YOTE LIFE!
To be fair, the middle one (with the lower payload) didn't have the 3.73 gears the other 2 did. With that, it should have similar if not greater payload.
Great comment! More to come on these comparison reviews!
The PowerBoost engine is the 3.5 ecoboost engine with an electric motor added between the transmission and engine. Ford could not get rid of the 3.5. For this reason.
Great comment!
I thought the xlt 5.0 was the only truck that came with a gear shift in the console---all 3 trucks you showed had a gear shift in the console?
You can get center console shifter with all engine options
@@CTECH-REVIEW well just saying it was a ford dealer to told me that
I thought the newer 5.0 has issues with the cylinder deactivation?
I’m not aware of that, but I will look into that. Thank you for the comment.
They don’t have cylinder deactivation that’s for the Chevy’s
you mentioned a little rougher shifting in the 2.7L when both have the same 10R80 transmission, that can all be reset- or programmed out, dealer can adjust the shifting from the software, that particular truck you were driving probably just needed reprogramming(Adjustment)
Very true great, thank you for watching
I wouldn't pay more than $45k for any of them, so I guess I'll keep my 2003 and go on a cruise ship vacation this summer instead :)
Good move
Thanks for the awesome video!! Knowing that there is only a 1 mph difference I will definitely going with the 5.0! Waaaaay more to go wrong with the ecoboost and not to mention the cost to replace the battery on the Powerboost! Keeping my next truck for many years so going with the reliable coyote!
Glad to help!
And the sound man! Gotta get the V8
Nicely done sir!! 😁 Only problem it made the decision even harder, LOL. Mileage vs. 2.7 folks love vs reliable V8 vs. generator on wheels vs. heart loving V8's with dual exhaust!!! 😜
Thank you! Cheers!
The 3.5 without the power boost has the most towing capacity. It's actually higher than any of the other engine choices including the 5.0
That’s. Great point. And put the new ford performance tune on it and have more power than the 3.5 ho engine!
Thanks for the comment!
You forgot to mention what gearing each of the trucks was. Im really impressed with the 5.0 mpg. With how high the payload was im thinking it was the 3.73. Same with the PB as 3.73 is standard. Curious about the 2.7. Great video.
Sorry I should have included that, I think it was in the window stickers, let me confirm. But I believe all 3 had identical gearing.
2.7 has 3.55 gears in the vid.
Any suggestions for a late model
F-150 with Direct and Port Injection. Also, what immediate and affordable engine and transmission mods for reliability and durability are recommended? I’m not looking for more power, just long-term reliability and durability as I don’t have too much money and need a truck for work and personal use. Thank you!
Thank you for watching, I am a fan of the 2.7l ecoboost for fuel efficiency and generally a reliable powertrain.
@@CTECH-REVIEW Thank you for your responding and for your advice! I appreciate your advice and help.
Just picked up a 2024 STx and I gotta say, the interior has to be the nicest entire for a near base model of any vehicle
It’s insane

Don't get the low mpg #'s, My 14' F150 SCREW 4x4 Platinum 3.5 would get 21 before I lifted it and put 35's on it @35k miles
That’s great fuel economy. Lots of variables when doing an mpg run
5.0 the only truck with true work capability, high payload and towing capacities, 5.0 V8 is the best
Thank you for the comment
The 3.5 is actually the highest towing capacity with power and torque at a much lower rpm than the 5.0. Both are great engines.
Thanks for watching. Typically max tow gets you a higher GVWR rating, the 9 3/4 inch rear axle, a beefier rear spring pack and higher GAWR!
2.7 will do better overall than the 5.0. Highway is highway, most driving is city or around town so the 2.7 will beat the 5.0 in the long run in terms of MPG's.
ya that makes sense! Thanks for watching!
And the PowerBoost will beat both in city stop and go
Not sure about that, turbos dump a lot of fuel at hwy speeds. I have a Chevy 2.7 and it does really great in the 55-65mph range. But 75+ mph and it’s pretty bad, like 14-16mpg. My ‘13 f150 with the 5.0 gets 17.5mpg at 75mph.
The 2.7 is a great engine.
Thank you for the comment and for watching
Thanks!
Right on! I think the 5.0 has a higher GVW and its a lighter weight powertrain.
@@CTECH-REVIEW if that was the case then the 2.7 should have a high payload rating, and it doesn’t
When you gave the payload capacities you didn’t mention the GVW each truck… Because that gives you the actual weight of the truck.
Great point. I will discuss that in future videos
2.7l is awesome engine. My top pick too!
I can get 27 mpg out of my ram 2500 Cummins driving at 55 mph too. 😂

That heavy battery pack will be happy flying 😂
2.7!!!💪💪💪💪👌👌👌👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
2.7l is great engine!
Probably the least worst choice
All the engines are good. So that’s not of any importance to me. You can’t go wrong with any of them. What’s more important to me is the chrome appearance package with the shifter on the column which I have on my 21 XLT 302A package. Ford has now taken that away from the XLT and has made it to where you have to step up to a lariat which I refuse to do because of the shifter placement being in the counsel area. I will be keeping my 21 until they bring back the chrome grill to the XLT.

Do the 2024’s have bluecruise 1.2 (with auto lane change) or still 1.0?
Great question let me look into this. Thanks for watching.
I'm curious, what was your actual distance of the test loop? How much was highway and how much stop and go?
Great question. The loop I do is about 17.8 miles. 70% highway.
@CTECH-REVIEW I'm sorry but an 18 mile loop is not enough for an accurate fuel consumption test imo.Atleast 50 miles with a considerable portion of stop and go would be ideal
Were the axles all the same and where’s the eco?
They all had same ratio axles and all of them ran in ECO mode! Thank you for watching!

For more city or heavy towing the 3.5
For sheer longevity, get the V8. ANYTIME you turbocharge something, solely to make up for lacking HP, you are asking for trouble, long term.
Great comment! Thanks for watching!
How does the lightest engine (2.7) have the lowest payload
most 2.7l engines get the 6600gvwr where as the 5.0 gets a higher GVWR.
They have different gear ratios.
I made a follow up video comparing gear ratios too. I hope that helps some!
The gear number are no longer display?
I thought it was!?
Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Should come back with 10 years of age of these and make the same video.

There are more parts in the v8
I don't think the Power Boost F-150 is a good idea in places that have extreme heat or cold, which is basically all over the place. That battery adds weight, complexity & a higher price tag & will not really do it's job in extreme climates. It does seem like a good idea as an overland truck for camping & stuff with all of it's outlets & things. I'm still sticking w/my 3.5L F-150 for now.
Thanks for the comment!

You ran tge 2.7L at 70 on the highway the other 2 you ran at 69.
I have had 2 - 2.7L, 2-P.B's 1 3.5L E.B. and 1 5.0L
Only the 1 2.7 and 1 3.5 L had the 10 speeds and obviously both P.B.'s had the 10 speeds.
That 1 mph on the highway makes a 1 mpg difference Drop that 2.7 to 69 mph and you'd be about 22 mpg's.
Thank you for the comments!
Im one of those simple guys that'll always get a v8 just for the exhaust note
I can not blame you for that!
A majority of people don't want small motors in full sized pickups!!!
Thanks for sharing
Is that why the smaller engines outsell the v8’s? Yup the majority 🙄
Thank you for the comment, it seems like the 15-17s is a solid choice!

Why are u doing 70 instead of 69

Anyone buying a full size truck and worrying about mpg doesn't need a full size truck. The 5.0 is the way to go for reliability and cost of ownership over a long time
Thanks for watching!
Nothing wrong with saving $$$ at the gas pumps whenever you can.I have a full size truck and given the cost of fuel today,a penny saved is a penny earned
The 5.0 has cylinder deactivation. The 3.5 and 2.7 are more reliable than the new 5.0
@tboe-cr8pz it does but is a much more reliable design than GM. Even with that it's more reliable for the long term than the twin turbo engines.
Most 2.7s come with 3:55s either way so this would be a fair test

Same or different rear diff ratios?
Same.
These trucks would be reliable if they kept their tried and true 6 speed, then they got rid of something good for a ticking time bomb of a 10 speed transmission.
