I use to be a flight attendant; you are absolutely correct.
Blows my mind how many people I hear around me unclicking their seatbelt as soon as the sign goes off. Then obviously they just stay sat in their chair? I assume their mindset is light on = must wear seatbelt. light off = must not wear seatbelt. Amazed they manage to get on the right flight.
I always do. Only time I take my seat belt off is when I use the restroom then it goes back on

I was on a flight once and when the seat belts sign went off the guy next to me took his off while I loosened mine a bit but kept it on. He looked over at me and in a passive aggressive tone said "Nervous flyer huh...". Later on we did hit some bad turbulence, hit an air pocket and the plane dropped like a roller coaster. I watched him launch out of his seat and smack his head on the ceiling. He was OK, but left with a lump on his head. It was hard for me to keep my mouth shut...

I travel to India from US and of course I wear my seat belt, except when I go to the bathroom. Turbulence is very much part of the journey, especially when we over the Atlantic ocean.

Unless using the restroom, ALWAYS ALWAYS have your seatbelts fastened securely. Be one with the plane. Also, if traveling overseas far away from home, investing in repatriation insurance is a good idea. Medivac flights from Asia can cost $100,000+.
My friend paid roughly $25,000 USD for a medevac flight from the Philippines to the USA. He also had to pay the cost of eight seats in economy for the space for the stretcher and two attendants. Total cost was around $35,000. I know every case is probably different, but I wanted to share my friend's experience.

When I tell them it voids my insurance they don't quite understand because not a one of them has insurance for anything. It's a Buddhist thing i am sure. Lol

That was my thought exactly. This family wasn't traveling state to state. This was a very long international flight. As such you MUST spend some time out of seat belts at least every few hours. If you don't you set yourself up for bloodclots & other problems you really don't want.Yes, in general, it is a very good idea to wear your seatbelt in an airplane. As a frequent flyer I am blessed to not be in this situation. The fact that everyone (almost) got safely to the ground is testament on the safety of the aircraft and skillful of the pilot. God speed and good recovery for everyone.

Turbulence is a natural part of flying. It might be rare that it happens but it happens. Just like when you're on a cruise ship and you enter rough seas. It happens, just expect the best and be prepared for the worst
The vast majority of people don't even understand the inherent risks of just stepping onto a plane lol, the facts are as follows: You are in a metal tube (for lack of a better term), travelling at 500 to 800mph, and with a ceiling of 30 to 40 thousand feet, engines that produce 150 to 250hp and can provide 134,300 pound force of thrust. People think we live in a perfect world where horrible things probably only happen to other people than themselves, but as soon as you step onto a plane, the odds of something going wrong is greatly increased, even when planes are parked on the gate with grooming and maintenance, there are still risks too, I would know, I work at an Internation Airport. People also don't know how immensely crazy it is to keep airports functional and free of delay, the turn around time on planes is crazy bro, like 60 mins to get bags and cargo off, to the carousels, through the maze and pops out into baggage claim, then you have maintenance, then you have grooming, them you have to get all the bags onto carts and load them onto the plane, while the fuelers fuel the plane, mechanics checking over things, bags are put in the belly of the place, the places pushes back and taxi's to the runway, people...at any given time, there are between 25 to 30 thousand planes in the air at once...lots of hard working people keeping the airports functional and operational. People bitch about things they know nothing about, they demand clean planes, every desire must be met or else they complain like children online. People actually try sneaking into the lounges at the airport lol, and probably the most retarded thing the airport has done is provide the men's room with a tampon machine.....bruh, I am not joking, and they provide a special garbage bin for said tampons....shits like living in a waking version of South Park.

I wonder how many people wh were injured were wearing their seat belts. As the pilots and flight attendants say, always keep your seat belt on. Unless, of course, you need to use the restroom.

I don’t remember an international flight that I have been in, that did not have turbulence. Every single time I fly over pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean.

In reply to your comment, no for the passengers who were buckled in would have remained in their seats (though mentally it would be a terrifying experience.) For the unfortunate passengers who were not buckled in will have been thrown up into the air when the aircraft dropped so suddenly. I fly frequently and i always take note of the safety briefing before take off. Which states that it is always recommended to stay buckled in whenever you are seated. I know that the seatbelt sign is switched off after takeoff but in all honesty i think that it should be left on. I know that you are always going to get those who are not buckled in no matter what. Always better to be safe than sorry. I think that it's a miracle there weren't more fatalities 🙏
@dawnphillipsonallen16 I used to fly for a living, traveling service tech. I also always remained buckled in, no reason not to. I was just shocked to see how many people apparently weren't. And there's probably a great possibility that one or both parents could be paralyzed.

Deadly turbulence? The guy died of a heart attack! That’s misleading, Deadly turbulence implies he died from injury as the direct result of the turbulence. This is like saying a man died of stroke in a car crash resulting a minor paint scratch a “deadly crash” technically he died in the car but its not deadly crash. Geez.

If USA has a network of high speed rails; atmospheric turbulence will be less of a problem. People will just take trains between Nashville and Raleigh-Durham, or Charlotte and Pittsburgh. We will see if air travels in domestic USA, will still be viable in the next 150 years.

It's a very rare and sad case for SQ. Besides confirming that there certainly will be huge lump sum payouts from claims on the insurance policies of those affected passengers/victims of SQ Flight 321, will Singapore Airlines Ltd, the CEO and its Management settle this potentially expensive Class Action dispute via 'Out of Court settlement' if the families of those who died, got hospitalised and warded in ICU who underwent intensive surgeries for their spinal cord injuries and/or head injuries, yet end up paralyzed with consequences such as paraplegia (no sensation below the waist), comatose, semi-vegetative state, PTSD, memory loss, anxiety-depression, etc, require all the long-term future family, nursing, psychological and social work support for the rest of their lives?

I think that says how bad it was that there were no phone recordings. It also was fast and very bad. I’ve seen pictures of blood on the ceiling, and carpet areas of the aircraft. I believe it happened during meal service thus why you see broken plates all over. I heard of at least one person getting burnt from hot water, coffee, or tea. Poor flight attendants that were up serving people their breakfast.
It should show nervous flyers how strong a plane really is. Very rarely does a plane crash from turbulence. It happened once in the 80’s, but that was due to a special weather phenomenon that caused extreme turbulence. If people are curious about turbulence and planes, I highly recommend Mentour pilots RUclips channel. He has a great video about turbulence.

It's not for the pilot to make a public declaration. There's an investigation underway now and we will know what transpired from the investigating team once investigations are complete.

A year ago I wanted to go to the Aviation School to become a Pilot, unfortunately, I could not do it due to medical issues. I love aviation since I was a little kid and I've always been interested in the way the planes function and learned a lot about turbulences also. I always knew that at 40.000 ft the air can get rough at any time and cause the plane to shake and go through a lot of aggressive motion, which is why, even if you think you're cooler than other passengers, or you are the kind of person to 'break the rules' by not wearing the seat belt during flight, does not make you more safe. That puts you in a lot of danger, or worse, end your life if you hit yourself too badly. We all have to remember that we are sitting at 40.000 ft above the ground in a metal tube with wings and 2 or 4 engines dragging us. The air is not to be messed with, especially when there is a climate changing situation. Some turbulences can successfully be avoided and some not, because the pilots cannot see on the radar, what's gonna happen next. This type of turbulence dangerous and unexpected. Stay safe out there and don't forget to keep your seat belts on at all times.

Yes the turbulence is something magic that happens...IS WEATHER!!!...when you analyze a situation, specially with a weather situation you have to speculate..
I was on a domestic flight of half an hour journey. The plane encountered with an air pocket and dropped a few hundreds meters. Cups and plates went flying. Fortunately no one was hurt but very scary.
When you're taking off, and after a couple of minutes when the plane gets to the cruising line, the pilots are allowing you to take off your seat belts, not to keep them off the entire time, but have the permission to go to the toilet, then return to your seat and loosely put back your seat belt, or if you want to stretch a little, if the flight is too long and seating too much is making your back hurt, you can stretch for 1 min or 2 and then get back in your seat and put your seat belt back on. It's so important and some people are so ignorant, it frustrates me, because they will get hurt, and then ask themselves, why the hell are they hurt??? And end up blaming the pilots for not doing their job properly, when in fact they had to keep their seat belts on!
What can they say, that they irresponsibly unbuckled their seat belts? Besides that, nothing is important. Boeing is not responsible for anything that happened.
I stubbed my toe getting out of bed last week.....that was also due to climate change.....AND racism.....AND because of white supremacists......yeah.....that's definitely why. ;-)
I think it's time that airlines required passengers to wear their seat belts at all times while seated; I've done so for years. And the industry should do more research into possibly designing cockpit displays that will allow pilots to see areas of clear-air turbulence and thus warn passengers and cabin crews to remain seated.
In this day and age, do you think it would be possible to mandate? It would be considered authoritarian and there might be outrage from those who don't like to follow rules.

Bay of Bengal / Andaman Sea is a very rough sea, I have experienced turbulence quite often when the airplane flies over this patch.

There's currently no technology to detect clear air turbulence, the most dangerous, which is suspected in this case.

Every single flight attendant has told everybody numerous times to keep your seatbelt fastened at all times but why listen to them they only know 100% of what they’re talking about. You’re not on a family cruise you’re on an airplane flying through the air which is already dangerous enough listen to the flight attendants that is their job. They know what they’re talking about.

I guess the morale of the story is to always wear your seat belt. There was an interview of another passenger on this same flight that was okay and he said its because he is wearing his seat belt when it happened. It's unfortunate if you are walking to/from the lavatory though.. but it seems the parents are not wearing their seat belts while the kids are, so they were safe. Hope the parents will be okay soon.. it so difficult for the kids if both parents are injured :(

Praise for Singapore Airlines pilot to control and manage to handle plane very well, this have to lesson to remember safety belt always have to wear all times when are you remain seated, think for your safety and for children and baby on board, inside plane everything can happen anytime.

Fly\ing is a RISK - irrespective the airline. SIA over the years has had an impeccable,record - the incident is unfortunate, it should however be investigated though to,pre-empt and to prevent future occurrences!

you enter a vehicle and secure your seat belt in accordance with the laws, the vehicle moves ahead and your journey begins, do you then undo your seatbelt just because your journey has begun?
If so, why?
