    “Looks like a bug that’s running away with salmon egg, and it pisses the salmon off” 😂😂 I like it.

    Good lure choice but I would like to add one more. The Mepps Aglia original with the silver blade and the red/yellow body in #5. I have caught more coho on that lure than any other lure I've tried. Also, I discovered a technique that worked really well for me last year in Alaska. Cast upstream and then reel the lure quickly downstream. Right after the lure passes your position turn your rod tip back upstream and slow your retrieve so that the lure swings in a big arch in the river. I caught many fish last year using this technique and in many cases it was the only thing that got them to bite.

    Rooster tails and twitching jigs have been good to me. A lot of people around here run those blue fox spinners, but I never have any luck with them.

      @CastFromTheHip  2 года назад

      Yeah I’ve never caught anything on the Blue Foxes haha. They work for other people though…I guess those skirted spinners work great which is pretty much just a plastic rooster tail. I’ll have to order up some roosters for next season.

      Most of the time I can catch a limit with bluefox #4 spinners and hammer spoons but if the fish are super pressured by a ton of anglers I like to use a 1/4 oz maribou jig under a float or with a medium corky pegged 3in above it.

    Thank you so much for actually listing size/weights! I appreciate the thoroughness on the descriptions all around. The number of guide video's that just say "I'm using a Mepp's" with no mention of color, size, model, etc. is infuriating. I've only ever fished Atlantic salmon, down rigging in a stocked lake with the trusty dare devil spoons in red/white and the salmon egg print or the chartreuse Syclops , so I'm hoping your tips help when I actually get on that Alaska trip.

    The pixie use 1/4 oz in either pink or orange with gold or silver rim for small to medium, then move up to the 1/2oz for med to larger, i havent really had luck with the 3/4oz but i see people use them, i always put a little rubber egg on one of the hooks for good luck😂 red seems to do the trick.

    I see that you use a lot of spinners. I fish lake Michigan here in northwest Indiana, and spoons have worked the best for me. Top 3 colors were orange and brass, chartreuse and brass, and hammered nickel and blue. Little Cleos and K.O. Wobbers were the top 2 brands. 2/3 and 3/5 were the best weights..

      Yeah, Mepp's flying C's up in Alaska are coho crushers. The 5/8oz pink silver blade #1, then the fire tiger, followed by the chartreuse silver blade. Every few years or so the orange silver blade would produce, don't know why, but nobody in our group would catch any on orange on those off years.

    I live in Alaska and pretty much live on the Lower Kenai all late summer. Pixee 1/4-1/2 oz depending of current and Panther Martin Willow Strike on Sampo black swivels are KILLER and I would say a must try for Silvers.

    Nice video, my personal favorite is the Blue Fox Vibrax, I caught a ton of Cohos this year in Alaska with them. I had Mepps spinners too but I couldn't get them to spin as consistently and I didn't have as much luck with them. I've never been able to catch a Coho with a spoon before so I think spinners are probably better.

    • @CastFromTheHip
      @CastFromTheHip  2 года назад +2

      I should make a video...but a basic starter rig would be 15lb monofilament line on the spool of a 3500 to 4500 size reel. Run the line through a 7ft medium action spinning rod and tie the line off to a small metal swivel. The metal swivel will make lures swaps quick and easy and prevent line twist due to a spinning lure in the water. Thanks for stopping by!
