They sure are. They don't just pull, but they often come toward you right away after being hooked, head shake, leap, roll, and this makes them come off the hook pretty easily. It's so fun, yet so challenging and frustrating at times. Love it!
The switching of hands on the spinner is interesting. :) I’m more intrigued by how long you let the spinner sit on the bottom at times. Seemed like it had to have been sitting on the bottom for a couple seconds or more before you turned it on, and bam. ! I need to try this more.
The spinning rod and reel outfit is definitely way easier than the baitcasting outfit. I've done it with both, but if you are going to cast and retrieve the spoon all day, then you'd want to go with the spinning setup.
If you are ever out in whatcom County, Ferndale area. The coho salmon are still very right and chrome this way and spinners are what they're going after, it's a hit and miss with twitching Jigs. We are in dire need of some rain though all the river systems this way are hurting for some water it's making it hard for the fish to want to bite at all.
looks like Im early for this season lol. Dont forget other shapes for spoons, Gibbs K# Wobbler is great for shallow water and slow retrieve, plus great action

Hey Rod nice job with the spin rod and lures. New to CW and just getting back into fishing from a 25 year hiatus. Curious if that's AP, as I really don't know areas to go except the obvious. All I have is a spincast rod and reel and would love to get out just don't know where to get away from all the shoulders and snaggers

Clean? It is so dusty right now and has been since July, I’m too cheap to get it washed so have been waiting for rain to do that job… but we all know how that’s going. 😂🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for the smoked white chinook btw, they were absolutely delicious!
Hey Rod I remember you said you use an Albright knot for your leader, but I have recently learned how to tie an FG knot and I totally swear by it now - you should check it out. It takes some practice and good dexterity to do it properly and cinch it down tight enough, but the end result is amazing. It's so low profile it flies through guides like it's not even there, and it even slides through the guide on my level wind reel no problem. Now I'm using longer leaders for this kind of river fishing even though the fish aren't exactly line shy, I find the little bit of extra stretch provides a great buffer for the hard fighting fish. Just like all fishing knowledge, there's a bajillion how to tutorial videos here on RUclips, and seems there's about half a dozen good ways to tie the FG. I am a total convert and will evangelize the awesomeness of the FG everywhere I go!

Yeah so far I am very happy with them. Just today, after I released the video, I went down to the river and managed to hook three more. One on the first cast, lost the second one on the third cast, then another one within 30 minutes later before I had to come home.
Hi Rod .. I bought the same prime lure and a bit cinfused as to the action ... it has different actuon than a croc and different from a spinner ... not sure the speed in order to get the proper action
I'm sure they would, but not sure why you would use them as a replacement of spoons as they already work so well. Tasmanian Devils were originally designed as freshwater trolling lures used in lakes. They don't really cast that well to begin with. It's just funny that I started using them over 30 years ago and there suddenly was a hype on them during this year's pink salmon season. My guess is that TD's would not swim as well as spoons like Prime Lures in the flowing water.
Actually, this season has been a lot more quiet than previous years. With the exception of the popular spots, pretty much all the places where I've been fishing hardly have other anglers around.

Hi Rod, great video! I’m going to come down next week from Kelowna. Question; have you ever used squid patterns for coho? Or, is it by and large just spoons and perhaps spinners? It’s been a fall to remember!
Hi John, I pretty much only stick to spoons and spinners, those are the two lure I do really well with so haven't spent the time experimenting with anything else. It should be good when you get down here.
Hey Rod, congrats on all the catches!! Just caught my very first coho last week on a spinner!!! 😀 I am going to try a spoon next time I go out as well. 2 questions if you dont mind from a novice. Have you ever tried fishing for coho with a kastmaster and if so any luck? And second, do you use scent and if so, what would you recommend?
Thanks John. I have used a Kastmaster before, but not for this fishery. I used to use them for various saltwater fisheries. They probably would work. I don't add scent to my lures, in my opinion it's not really necessary. Take today for example, I was out briefly this afternoon and first cast resulted in a very good fish, hatchery coho salmon around 8 or 9lb. Third cast hooked up another one that was just as nice but popped off the hook. The key is to look for fish that have not been disturbed for a long period of time. They will almost always go for anything moving in those scenarios.
James, there are two components of the Chilliwack River coho salmon stocks - Hatchery and wild fish. The section of the river which is open to sport fishing is not where coho salmon spawn. Hatchery adult coho salmon travel through this section and end up at the hatchery which is just above the upper fishing boundary. The hatchery collects a small percentage of these fish and use them to meet their brood target, and the rest of these fish are in fact transported to the fish processor. They do not contribute to the recruitment of the population. Wild coho salmon, primarily spawn in the off channels in the upper watershed, which is much further upstream. Some fish also travel into Chilliwack Lake and spawn in the creeks which feed into the lake. This fishery has very little impact on the overall population, and is in fact a very sustainable fishery in comparison to other fisheries across this province. Known as the terminal fishery, it allows anglers to target fish stocks that are sustainable. On the other hand, mixed stock fisheries that take place in the Fraser River or the ocean, have the possibility to intercept stocks of concern beside targeting sustainable stocks, so the impact/footprint is a lot bigger.
Great fishing Rod ! Question , is the Vedder classified water ? I've never been to the island and mostly fish zone 6 . Most rivers there are class one or two . It can get pretty pricey since I live in Alberta . Been fishing BC since the seventies and seen the salmon fishing opportunities disappear lately. Between fish farm and climate change the future looks uncertain . You are right about coho loving spinners , my son makes all the ones we use . Hammerd Colorado are the best in silver . Good luck bud .
Thanks. The Vedder is not classified water so you just need your basic freshwater fishing licence and conservation surcharges for salmon and steelhead, depending on what you are targeting.
I have always wondered why ones cast with the right hand than have go to switch lead hands to reel right handed when you could reel with the left. Good video tho
Thats how it's done with the baitcaster reels , everybody does it. so when you switch to spinning its hard to kick the habit. I learned fishing with the spinning reel so I have a hard time with the baitcaster retrieve style that all bc anglers use . I get a lot of punishment 🤣
In california it's illegal to fish cohos but good luck even finding one. I grew up on chinooks and steelhead and man are they a blast and delicious. Have yet to catch a coho but sure would love to someday. Currently stuck in texas where no salmonids exist(except for shitty little planter rainbows in winter) when I have the money to get out of this flat, hot, mountainless shithole I'm going to Oregon or maybe Washington where there's real trees and real fish
You should be doing the opposite since everyone is now buying the exact same setup, and the fish will soon be too conditioned to bite these. You could be coming in with a different lure, and first cast, BAM! 🤣
Jason, historically there has always been a coho salmon fishery in the Fraser River throughout October. In fact, if you look through some of our older videos (from 2011, etc), you'll find me catching some really large coho salmon around Steveston. That fishery is no longer available, for awhile anyway. The river is now closed throughout October each year to protect a couple of vulnerable steelhead runs which migrate through the Fraser at the same time with coho salmon. The river will reopen up around early November for coho salmon fishing, the date changes slightly each year, you'd be able to find the announcement of the opening on my Facebook page. It's usually posted up when it opens.

Yeah, people don't realize how simple the setup is for catching coho salmon. A spinning rod and reel setup, a box of lures and you're set!
Are spinning reels better than a bait caster reel for this type of fishing with spoons?
The spinning rod and reel outfit is definitely way easier than the baitcasting outfit. I've done it with both, but if you are going to cast and retrieve the spoon all day, then you'd want to go with the spinning setup.

Not really, it wouldn't produce the action that it's supposed to.

thanks
Hi Rod what time is this? thanks!
The dates are in the video and I also mentioned the time of the day in it.
what fishing store do you go to most in Chilliwack
Fred's Custom Tackle and Pacific Rivers Outfitting Company.
Can't wait to get some good spook water and biting fish!
Maybe all the fish will be up at the hatchery by Sunday night. 😆
Living in abbotsford i sure would love to meet you at vedder for a good day
See you out there.
Can we fish the fraser right now peg leg and what not
No.
@@FishingwithRod how come the Vedder open but not the Fraser...how about tidal fraser
It’s not open. There hasn’t been a fall salmon fishery in the Fraser for several years now and will not be for a long time due to stock concerns.
@@FishingwithRod thank you very much
what’s the specs on the rod you’re using? length, power, action, etc.
Hi Hugo, I got that in this video which has a complete overview of my coho setups.

@@FishingwithRod Thanks Rod! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your insights and knowledge!!
Rod, are these coho actually spawning where you're fishing, or is this well before they begin to pair up and dig redds?
Hey rod, why are all your videos in 360p now?
They're not. Click on the option in the video frame and change it to HD.
Yeah it's just an old habit which I've had for 40 years now, used to it and not about to change. 😆
Thats how it's done with the baitcaster reels , everybody does it. so when you switch to spinning its hard to kick the habit. I learned fishing with the spinning reel so I have a hard time with the baitcaster retrieve style that all bc anglers use . I get a lot of punishment 🤣
Where was this filmed ?
Chilliwack River.
I got me a nice 30 lb Chinook last night before sunset 🌇
Awesome!
Where is this spot? Thanks
I actually talked about this spot at 15:30. Did you watch the entire video? 🙂
Love the video
Great!
what size of leader line? thanks
I use 15lb Seaguar STS Salmon fluorocarbon.
Great video, Rod...very exciting
Thank you James. 🙂
Now this is a fishing video! Made me feel like I was fishing, what a refreshing feeling compared to these cringe RUclipsrs nowadays
Glad you enjoyed! 😊
Is this in the Vedder?
Yes.
What's the name of river. ?
Chilliwack River.
Where is this at?
Nice catch!!!!!!
Chilliwack River
@@FishingwithRod oh nicee!!! Thanks
Rod I can’t watch your videos anymore, I’m going broke ordering all the products you use🤪🎣
You should be doing the opposite since everyone is now buying the exact same setup, and the fish will soon be too conditioned to bite these. You could be coming in with a different lure, and first cast, BAM! 🤣
@@FishingwithRod I really wish you’d explained that to me before I placed my order 🤣
😆
How can I mail you a product to try ?
It’s best to DM me on Instagram or Facebook. 🙂
Does anyone know where is this “Sandy Beach” spot at 9:47, was looking for it quite a long time?
It's a terrible spot lol...
@@FishingwithRod why😂
Another option if you don't have rubber bands are hair ties. I steal them from my wife. They work great.
Good idea not sure if the wife agrees. Then again, I find them everywhere in the house. Just today I found one in the dish washer...
@@FishingwithRod I was wondering where the one I lost in the kitchen went the other day…
😒
AWESSOME!!!
Thanks!
Man how do u find these spots
Easy, just walk. There's so much empty river everyday.
🏃🏻♂️
Why don't you get a right-handed reel?
Because I like to be complicated.
Niiiiiiiice 🙏
Thanks David!
are there coho salmon in the lower mainland/ the steveston side of fraser river? where is my best shot
There are Coho in the Fraser but it is closed to fishing. But come on out to the Vedder, best Coho fishing in BC, IMHO.
Nice❤
Thanks 🔥
