This is the greatest song that ever wasn’t. It is prefect. The lyrics. The rhythm. The words. The sentiment. The delivery. The emotion. And the greatest quote ever in a song. She never had dreams so they never came true. Such an underrated classic.
The E/G# chord right on the line "Baby, don't even try" kills me every time. very powerful song with a slower tempo which is hard to pull off. what a bar song!
Awesome lyrics throughout the song. Other than the ones already mentioned, 2 others stand out to me. "When I whispered I could love her...she just said baby....don't even bother to try" and "And the bees they had stung her...the birds they had flown...there were guys she could number...but none had she known". It shocks me that this song wasn't a massive hit.
“And She never had dreams....so they never came true.” ...one of the saddest lines ever sung in rock. I loved this song when I was in High school when it came out and I still love it.
I forgot I had this video and ran up on it one day.I noticed the video was not on RUclips anywhere....so here it is....You're welcome...that goes for all of you that posted.
I use to dance to this song back in 1986. Always felt they sang this song just for me. "all her friends did her favors that were really just loan's and she never had dreams so they never came true. " I always only wore boots. I was kickin that habit. I just love this song Thanks for the post
Angel In Blue The J. Geils Band We met in a bar Out on Chesapeake Bay With her white patent boots And her blouse red lame A table top dancer She would smile on cue Oh those lips of an angel Angel in blue She'd been dancin for ages Through cities of bars She was kickin' the habit Of scoring in cars She'd been drained of her spirit All caged up in this zoo A wild cat angel Angel in blue And as she stared out into nowhere I thought yes I thought she might break down and cry Oh when I whispered I thought I could love her She just said, "Baby don't even bother to try" And I watched as she spoke Her words chilled my bones All her friends did her favors That were really just loans And she never had dreams So they never came true Oh the palest of angels Angel in blue And the bees they had stung her The birds they had flown There were guys she could number But none had she known And she never had dreams So they never came true Oh my fade away angel Angel in blue Angel in blue Angel in blue Angel in blue
The frontrunners in that category for me , are "Angel Too Close to the Ground," Willie Nelson; "Sunset Woman" and "A Lady is Always a Lady" by Dave Loggins; and "Queen of the Silver Dollar," by Dr. Hook.
I am 53 now and this was the best of their songs. I was in love with my angel in blue. I fell in love with her but she got engaged to my best friend. He was a fool and let her get away. I have been married to her now for 30 years
I whole hearted agree. Peter wolf is an r N b poet. Great narrative lyrics about a stripper in a dead end job, going through the motions, struggling to get by. Heavy stuff for band that got labeled a "party band". Freeze frame one of the lps of the 80s.
"And she never had dreams, so they never came true".... Loved this song for many years, for the unexpected poignancy in a J Geils piece. Peters' solo albums are a revelation of who he is as a mature artist; especially like the song Nothing But The Wheel, with Jagger & Richards thrown in for another layer of texture. It's an older country song, revitalized & sounding as though it would fit on Exile On Main Street.
simply wonderful and inspiring. I looked for this clip for almost 30 years since I watched to it once on TV. Internet had to arrive to make the search possible.
It took me forever to remember the name of this song and I was pleasantly surprised I found it on youtube......... JGB rocked the 80's. One of the few bands I would listen to in the 80's.......... Peter Wolf and company are absolutely genious.....
Bought this album in 1981 when I was 16. I liked J Geils and Freeze Frame & Centerfold from this. Back in those days, we'd put on the album and just let it play... then flip it over and let all of side 2 play. So I heard this song as much as any other (except for radio) This is the ONE that stuck with me for 36 years now. At the time... the message was a bit over my head... but still a beautiful song.
Love this video because it gave John Geils a lot of face time. I never noticed it before, but he is playing his white guitar just behind Peter in most of the video. Love it. RIP Mr. Geils.
Definitely one that should have been huge! It also introduced the Rock world to Luther Vandross, who not only sang background vocals on this song, but arranged them as well....in fact,if my memory is correct, the lyric inner sleeve stated Luther arranged the entire song!
I love everything about this song. Lyrically fantastic. Those keyboards, the drums, the guitar strums, the harmonies...this is an all time great rock song.
Whoa! Never heard of this JGB song until today, despite growing up in the fantastic musical decade that were the AWESOMEST 80s! I only know Freeze Frame and Centerfold...

good jukebox song in a smokey bar room drinking away about the one who left. then finding comfort in another broken heart. ..cool blues rock classic by a good band
College roommate and I played this tune until it was white in 83....Love troubles, you know...Everybody meets at least one or two angels in blue, in course of a life, i guess...
The Freeze-Frame cassette was the first I ever owned at 8yo. I made the mistake of loaning it to a friend. When his parents heard the last song on side 2, we BOTH ended up getting grounded. Seems really tame compared to some of the lyrics that have made it to market in the convening 40 years. LOL!
I heard this for the first time today. I don’t listen to radio played out songs but had a listen to this song while looking for one last kiss. Heard this and was like wowww this is good. It’s a moving song just hits you. Wow.
One of the most hauntingly beautiful ballads ever recorded...
Who else just randomly felt like listening to this song

Absolutely the best song to get a girl to take off her bra and panties ..
This song deserved to be as big a hit as "Centerfold" and "Freeze-Frame". For a J. Geils song, it's oddly sad and beautiful. A true classic.
It was huge on MTV, back when MTV was worth watching.

Perhaps the best song on the "Freeze-Frame" album!

Angel In Blue
The J. Geils Band
We met in a bar
Out on Chesapeake Bay
With her white patent boots
And her blouse red lame
A table top dancer
She would smile on cue
Oh those lips of an angel
Angel in blue
She'd been dancin for ages
Through cities of bars
She was kickin' the habit
Of scoring in cars
She'd been drained of her spirit
All caged up in this zoo
A wild cat angel
Angel in blue
And as she stared out into nowhere
I thought yes I thought she might break down and cry
Oh when I whispered I thought I could love her
She just said, "Baby don't even bother to try"
And I watched as she spoke
Her words chilled my bones
All her friends did her favors
That were really just loans
And she never had dreams
So they never came true
Oh the palest of angels
Angel in blue
And the bees they had stung her
The birds they had flown
There were guys she could number
But none had she known
And she never had dreams
So they never came true
Oh my fade away angel
Angel in blue
