One of our cats is literally the sweetest thing just complains meows when we trim his nails but no growling or scratching but our 2nd cat is a nightmare the moment she sees a blanket or towel she starts to hiss and growl and claw and bite and if you manage to restrain her she'll pee on you there's no way to get out of it unscathed we even had to start using leather gloves to keep hands safe its definitely an ordeal.

All these cats in the how-to videos just lay there pretty as you please and allow the human to do whatever they need to. And then down in the comments are we folks in the real world with squirming, bolting masses of claws and teeth.

I wrapped her up like a burrito with a cat head like instructed and the struggles were less fierce and violent!!! She just protested by whining and making the same noise your cat did in the video, but I still managed to cut all her nails and now she's happily enjoying her treats :3 Thank you so much for this video!!

Here are few tips, from someone who owns 13 cats. When youve been trimming your cats nails since he was a kitten they would get used to it. But if you just tried to trim your cat all grown up, always do it when they just woke up from a long nap, no blankets needed. After every trim, give them treats.

@@robertoleon2408 Nice of you to try to push a product sale, but that clipper looks extremely bulky and that in itself can make the cat even more scared. They would never work for many cats whose nails I trim. They don't want to feel bulky tools against their feet. They don't want to feel the tool at all. That's the problem with most nail clippers.

  • @buttercup141312

Persistence and treats is key. Don’t try to do all of them at once. Give your cat breaks. Reward them when they allow you to trim them and are calm. It took me forever to get my 4-month-old kitten’s right front paw. The back paws are easier for him. He literally laid down and let me hold his hind paws. You have to be quick but careful. The longer you take to clip it, the more annoyed and stressed they get. Also the blanket trick is a godsend.

in theory, I completely agree that you "should" do it in stages, but these squirmers/hissers are so hold to get settled, that once you do, you just want to get them done. I think I need to try more frequently so that he becomes more desensitized by it and I can do it in sections. Fingers crossed. 🤞

Covering his whole head and body helped a lot. He even purred (though probably more self soothing than actually happy). Note- he was trying to run away before I got him wrapped, but I held him by the scruff of his neck and that helped a lot to keep him in place while I wrapped

Mine usually are okay with trimming if I've done it consistently since they were kittens. Immobilizing with a towel usually works, but some cats are much more fearful of confinement than others, and can struggle to the point they hurt themselves or you, and for them I just put up with the fidgeting, and the super long time it takes to get each nail before they start to struggle. It takes longer, but we don't resent each other when it's done. I always follow up trimmings with a good wire brushing which they love. And I praise them whenever they hold still and are compliant, and scratch. I never scruff them, ever.

I haven’t tried the blanket trick yet, but I’ve been working on trying to sneak in trimming a couple nails every couple of days. He definitely doesn’t like being restrained but the vet just doesn’t trim them short enough and if I can just keep the tips of the new razors at bay I’m happy.

  • @srpskihayk
    @srpskihayk 8 лет назад +61

I do not believe this cat was ever angry or otherwise excitable. My cat will have none of it. He would not sit long enough for the blanket. Just moving the blanket would have been enough to make him take off. Since he was a kitten, he refused to get his claws clipped. It is a very stressful event for all involved and generally takes 2 of us to do it. I have to hold him by the scruff of his neck, that will immobilize him, and my wife clips the claws. He still attempts to fight and bite. When we let him go, his fur gets all ruffed up and he goes and hides for a day.
She gave him a bath, per vets instructions, once as a kitten. That did not go well. She tried again when he got older and larger. The end result was she (the wife) needed 10 stitches and a number of shots. I had to do a lot of convincing not to have the cat put down which she threatened to do. I am convinced he is mentally damaged. Also, the last time we took him to the vet, he almost snapped his neck struggling to get out of the carrier. He is a loving cat, or can be. But, everything is so stressful for him. I am afraid he will stress himself to a heart attack at some point.

Cats usually fight baths bc the water is too cold. The water should be hotter than you’d think. I bathe my cats in water that’s the same temp I bath in (my dogs prefer cooler so they get like warm baths). I bath every kitten I get once or twice a week for the first several months I have it, then I down grade to once every few weeks. I try to bathe adult cats once every 6 months. Having them be used to it as well as using the right temp water really, really helps.
I’m also very firm and consistent with all of my animals about my rules, but I still let them develop their own personality. My newest kitten likes to go hiking on leash with the dogs and at the vet is a very pissy man (to be fair, they fixed him the last time he went, so he has a justified reason).
But I will NOT let my cats run out of the bathtub for anything. If they start to get mad, they get scruffed.

    • @Subparanon
      @Subparanon 7 лет назад +5

For cats like that, I lay a towel on my lap, and then call the cat over and begin petting them. As I'm petting them I get in a position where I can keep control of their body, and I'll swaddle them as gently as I can, and talk to them and praise them until I'm ready to trim. I pick them up and move to a table or desk, because it makes it easier to lean over them and use my body to help limit their motion while I trim.
One thing that ALWAYS works, is a cat facial mask. It's like a blinder that goes on over their head, leaving their nose free, but covering the mouth and eyes, and they go limp with that on. It's heavy handed though and increases their stress level so I don't use it if I can help it. Pretty much only for things like cleaning the ears.

Hi, my cat's extremely aggressive as well, and we decided against clipping his nails. For the bath, we usually get a bucket of hot water and a mug, shut the bathroom door, and allow him to walk around as we slowly pour water on him. To shampoo, we usually pretend as though we're going to open the bathroom door to let him out, and as he's distracted, we quickly apply the shampoo, again pour the hot water, and slightly dry him with a towel as he continues to move around!

Scarlett Tomlinson this is so hallarious it sounds like such an event lol!!! We used to make a sudsy bath in the kitchen sink ..we'd put our cat in and wash her as fast as we could for 5 seconds only once a year ..and have towels layed everywhere so as she jumped out we could quickly dry her as much as possible ..then we would run a blow dryer about 4 feet away from her so she could dry off quicker then she would hide from us for the rest of the day ...nail clippings were once every month or 2 months sometimes and I always waited until see was asleep or extremely tired and she was eighther on my lap or i was sitting next to her gently holding her paw slowly clipped one nail per minute as not to wake her once I tried when she was wide awake she was very annoyed and gave me the meanest attitude and looks lol ...by the 8th clip i was almost done but she would try to destroy my hand that was holding the clipper

My cat, Mocha, is also 17 years old, and her nails are like talons! When she was a kitten, I started getting her used to nail clipping, just as I do with any cat I get. She let me do it then, but as she got older, she didn't want any part of that, and showed it by growling, hissing and swiping at me. She never bites. I think I would rather be bitten than scratched because scratches hurt more! Even though she's so old now, she's still VERY feisty! Her claws click on the floor and get stuck on fabrics and carpet. So I will have to try this method and see how it goes. I don't know about covering her head...she might flip out!
Update: On january 17, 2023, Mocha had what we think, was a stroke and we had to put her down. 😢

I tried and it went south quickly. Got 1 talon cut. He's now hissing and growling when I walk by. 3 years of love, building trust, trying to get him used to his paws being touched but he has never allowed touching paws. Tonight he lost it when I tried this. Sigh, the vet has done it so maybe back to the vet we need to go.

It's always been an ordeal trying to trim my cats claws. She's basically good natured, but like most cats nail trimming turns her into a little monster... so I've been putting it off. Yesterday she scratched me when I tried to give her medicine. So I knew it was time to give it a go again.
Reading this helped. Especially the comments made me see I'm not the only one whose kitty turns into a ferocious little beast.
So I petted her for awhile, and then wrapped her in a blanket, including her head.
I kept telling her what a good girl she was.
She kept hissing at me but didn't fight me (this time)
I managed to trim 3 of her claws on her left hand. I let her go and she raced away to hide..
I felt like I really accomplished something major. Until I realized I have another hand to go ! 😩... She did good though. We'll try the other hand tomorrow.. wish me luck

A vet has come out with a swaddling wrap since this video was posted which looks very promising. It can be used for nails, exams, subq and many other procedures. Does cost about $120 but will definitely be worth it if you do a lot of procedures or have multiple cats that need restraints.

The cat is growling the whole time and hissed once, but never tried to get away ... probably he realizes that he's going to lose the battle with the human, so may as well just suck it up and get the ordeal over with.

I don't know how you have convinced your cat to calmly lay there and have her nails trimmed. I wrap my cat in thick furr mattress and still feel her claws digging in my legs. she goes crazy and starts running like firebolts. Doesn't let me clean her eyes, ears, or clip her nails.

I have a Charcoal and White Tuxedo that weighs over 11 lbs, he's absolutely SOLID (built like a Pitbull) and is only 9-months old. The power this cat has in his jaws and Claws is unreal. I had my arm split open several layers deep with one swipe of a paw trying to cut his nails. He has never been thrilled to get them done, but the older he gets, the more aggressive he becomes when it comes to that. Even attempting to turn him into a Kitty PURRITO would require 3 people.

Her nails grew to the point I could hear them tick on the floor, I was able to clip her front nails because of this technique. Too bad I was not able to clip her back ones as well. If she will not let me do them between now and two weeks I will take her to the vet, I bet they will thank me for doing the front ones lol!

The last time we took our little old lady cat (just turned 17) to get her claws done by the vet, she clipped them all *completely off*, right back as far as they'd go. We didn't notice until we got her home and she was dripping blood from every foot. Obviously we've been doing it ourselves since then!! Every foot I can usually get gently while she's sleeping, except the front right which she always sleeps on. Will be trying the towel tonight!

Gussie had me at, "gggrrrrrr.....ggggrrrrrr....grewwwwww....mrrrrrGH!" Until the microphone was closer to her mouth I wasn't quite certain that she was as "fractious" as advertised! Oh, yeh - she is!I've rescued about a dozen kittens and cats over the last 25 years - never found one who I didn't just fall head-over-heals for - definitely love at first sight.Well, then along came "Smokie." A beautiful grey velvet Korat. Up until this time I'd never really looked at the medical records that came with my new forever family members. About a week after the adoption, I noticed that she HATED being picked up (even for a snack). About 2 1/2 weeks in, I attempted the nail trim. WHOA!!That was an interesting experience. It was at this point that I read her intake medical record. The FIRST thing noted was, "Fractious Cat." Although I'm fairly bright, I had no idea what the meaning of "fractious" was and how it would apply to my fluff-ball. So, out came the dictionary and the first defining word I see is "barbaric" followed by "hard to manage; potentially dangerous to approaching humans, etc." The LAST line said "This word is most often used in conjunction with the description of a cat..."At this point, I altered all methods for safe handling, stocked up on peroxide and bandages, and introduced LOTS OF TOYS that wear her out. Our home is much calmer and I've just changed my unrealistic expectations of her behavior. All are doing fine and are LOVED to the max. Thank you for provide tapes to help people like me!

No offense intended Doc, but that IS NOT a feisty cat. That is not a happy cat, and she's getting madder by the second, but "feisty" in my book includes a lot of flailing limbs and twisting torsos. Gussie is downright precious in comparison to our cat!

I agree with the other comments. "Fractious" is a wee bit strong (I am being sarcastic, this is not even close.) Laying there growling is nothing. I have a post feral cat who has been with me for a year. I need to clip his nails. No I don't want a free ebook.......I want a real video of a feral cat or a real fractious cat having their nails done. No book is gonna do it. I need to see it.
