The TikTok charts remind me a lot of TRL. There's definitely consistent hit makers for the app who's popularity seems fairly insular to the platform similar to the pop queens/boy bands/pop punk of TRL (which even back in the day didnt even really chart that well most of the time besides the Britneys and NSyncs [think like Samantha Mumba and later New Found Glory])
Its cool that TikTok has a billboard chart to track these ebs and flows. You two also kinda give Carson Daily vibes tbqh especially Joe

The industry shifted to a higher pace. Where labels used to discover and invest into artist, they are now looking for TikTok hits. If it succeeds: cool, if it fails: drop the artist. I think that the real long term artists are currently independent

To clarify, it's not the most popular song in America, it's the most popular song on tik Tok.
The number 1 song is cruel summer by Taylor Swift.
Nobody is like, "baby shark is the future of music"

I feel like your opinions about Tate McRae contradict your earlier issues with the charts. You’re fatigued with seeing the same five people over and over but then irritated that Tate is given a big music video budget before she “earned” it? Also, the music video is in a skating rink because her ex (the song’s muse) is a hockey player. You guys just be talking at this point.

Did they do any research (their job) on Tate before this pod? Sure she had kinda chaotic pop star roll out but that’s the era we’re in and she’s only 20. Greedy is a global hit and is straight pop 1). She has the #1 song on Spotify globally 2.) 47mm monthly listeners in Spotify. Only 10mm behind Olivia and gained 20mm since greedy was released 3.) the whole hockey thing in the video was a jab at her ex boyfriend who plays in the NHL 4.) she’s the best pop dancer since Britney. She came in 3rd place so you think you could dance
They better put some respect on tates name bc if she capitalize in greedy and put together a classic pop album she’ll pass her contemporaries like Olivia and Billie

There's been nothing new in pop music for a long time now. Everything still comes from the '80s and '90s.

its frightening what you guys interpret as good... anyway production is far too copy n paste for anything to gain traction and feel unique. it also doesnt help that pop almost entirely caters to teeny boppers whereas in past eras pop was a variety show

Tread carefully equating BTS fans as 13 year olds. I get your larger point, but it may be worth digging into similar collabs that don't work well. Or those that do - like Jungkook's collab with Latto that is much more cohesive within the song "Seven" ( also not liked by Jon, but hopefully you'd admit is a better collab).

Joe doesn’t really like Olivia Rodrigo does he? …..I’d say GUTS deserve Album of the Year and Vampire as Song of the Year.

So address the issue of Billboard's tinkering with the formula to minimize the members of BTS. Remember that they get no radio play for their non-English songs since they won't pay for placement so their Billboard status is dependent on physical album sales and online streams/downloads. BTS kills it in album sales but is really vulnerable to Billboard's discounting of BTS streams. It will be really aggravating if they do this to Jungkook's new album, which you managed to not mention.

Also, you really are fogies (I'm over 70, so I know whereof I speak). You only like stuff from your past, and everything else is derivative? Do you not know how all of that stuff was derivative? We all build, guys.
Have to tell you that i only got through your discussion by running it at 125%, and that speed made the music clips way more tolerable. Maybe the new music is just too slow.

Current pop music is 98% sh1t. It is all in earnings silos and the "charts" are manufactured rubbish for teenagers. Go to a music concert and listen to one of the silo's that suits you but the "most popular" is for other people not you. It used to be different.
