You’re adorable.😊 What a fun way to present this information. I particularly appreciate that you didn’t do what many people do, which is trash on sleeping bags (or quilts) but instead highlighted the benefits and how to properly use a quilt. Well done.
There are also some hybrid designs out there that can be zipped into sleeping bags with hoods and foot boxes, or turned into fully open quilts, or various in-between configurations. Sierra Designs makes a few, not sure who else.
I keep a 0*(F) sleeping bag in my truck for emergencies, since Washington state winters can get chilly. But for hiking, car camping, and backpacking I'm now completely sold on quilts, and will never go back to a bag. They are just so much more versatile, while also being smaller and lighter. In extreme cold, a sleeping bag still wins, but I find that in extreme cold I just don't sleep outdoors anymore. 😆 Great explanatory video, and I just wanted to say I recently came across your channel and I've been enjoying it! Your cinematography on the coastal trail video I watched recently was extraordinary.
Haha a 0F sleeping bag sounds like some serious business!! I'll admit if I have the choice of doing a hike in winter or summer i'll plan for summer to avoid the cold. :P Thank you so much for stumbling on the channel and better yet thank you for watching the videos!! I have a bit of a backlog of actual hiking videos that im behind on the editing. But hopefully they can be just as nice in terms of cinematography 😊
A lot of people blame the bag but they are not using the right base for it to work in that air temp range that or they have the wrong size for their body size as bag that is too tight compresses the insulation and reduces effectiveness, to big and you have cold spots as you move about and most have lower fill on the bottom side for this reason and keeping it where it is needed. Women also need higher R-values pads because they have lower body mass than men. An additional R-value of 1 is usually a good hedge for women and other cold sleepers. Temp rating for bags/quilts that are ISO/EN certified rating they are assuming the user is wearing a mid-weight base layer, wearing a beanie. A big one is this... that people over look. 'EN sleeping bag temperature ratings are predicated on using a sleeping pad with an R-value of 5 or higher. If you find yourself sleeping cold in temperatures where you’d expect your sleeping bag should keep you warm, it may be because your sleeping pad has an R-value less than 5.' Air Temperature (F): 50 30 25 10 0 -15 -25 -40 Air Temperature (C): 10 -1 -4 -12 -18 -26 -32 -40 Minimum R-Value 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Thanks so much for this video. I’ve been looking at a quilt for a while but been hesitant because it’s a lot of money to spend on something that might not work for me. This is the first video that I’ve seen where I’ve been able to really understand how it could work for me. Also really like that it didn’t feel like an ad like other backpacking channels..
Great video. I just learned about quilts and as someone who has to get up a few times a night to....take a short walk. A quilt seems like such a better option than having a stuck zipper on a sleeping bag!
Great vid, and nice to see a plug for Ryan and Neve Gear. I've two of his quilts and one of his packs, and have taken them all over. He makes great gear and is a good operator.
I use a bag and it’s great….i don’t have the issues in this vid…..I’m a side sleeper. I’ve tried quilts and they don’t work very well for me. They slide off and away when I need them most….in the wee hours of the night etc. Cheers!
Preparing for my AT 2025 thru hike and have watched so many videos on equipment, etc. This is one of the best! Not just the equipment review, but the editing, how you present the info.. so clear and uncluttered! Great personality and knowledge… thanks much for your advice!! Cheers
I love quilts. On cold nights, I sometimes miss the sleeping bag due to drafts, but the straps work pretty well. The other three seasons, I absolutely love the way they function. Cheers!
I move around a lot when I sleep, sleeping on my side and also on my stomach. I switched to a quilt a few years ago, as I was tired of being sausaged to sleep in sleeping bags. I chose a completely open quilt, as it can also be used as a blanket. Much more practical and versatile. Comfort temperature -18°C (yes, 0°F 😄) ), and a 9 cm (3.5") thick inflatable mattress with an R-Value of 7. Yes, winter gear. The thickness of the mattress means you can fine-tune its firmness. Under this mattress, I put another thin Bundeswehr mattress, foldable, which protects the other against perforations (and btw adds 1 more R-factor point...). All tied up with quilt strips. The folding mattress can also be used as an internal backpack frame and insulating seat. Well, I use all this in summer too, with no other inconvenience than a little extra weight, but for a sleeping comfort I hadn't experienced before. It's heaven 😋 Too hot for summer, this system? Yes, sure, but all you have to do is open it, and there's no problem. I wondered about it, tested it, and it works. What's more, I don't have to worry about what equipment to take, as it will work whatever the conditions. Thanks for your calm rhythm of speech, it's almost relaxing 🙂 One more subscriber 🏵
Great and completely on point presentation :) having used quilts mainly for the last 10+ years i completely agree - comfort for me (personal preference) and flexibility is my main reasons
On top of the video being informative your voice is very soothing and your expressions are super cute. I think you would be excellent company on a hike (or just full stop tbh). I was having a bit of a down day but you cheered me right up, thank you. I'll definately be back to watch more 😊
Thank you! Haha i'm not sure why my voice goes into 'calm mode' when the camera is rolling, maybe its me trying to remember my script 😛 I hope the days after this comment have been cheery! Thank you for watching, and happy to have you back for more! 😊
Great, simple explanation. There are also companies like Zenbivy that make a bottom sheet, so the quit acts even more like a sleeping bag / fully enclosed system. Yet another thing to consider, but I swear by them.
I use a quilt as well. They are great for the flexibikity especially in 3 seasons. Not slept in one with snow so can't comment on that! I got mine created by a Tasmania cottage company called TierGear.
Another awesome informative video. Just 30 minutes ago I was trying to reduce my packs baseweight (down to 14kg). I'm definitely going to research these now. Thanks
haha yes even though I absolutely love my sea to summit sleeping bag its hard to put it in the pack for a general hike when I know its slightly heavier! I will do anything to compensate for the weight of my camera 😂 Are you succeeding in your baseweight mission?
@settohike camera is just one of those must-have items. Unfortunately no the only things I can cut down on is investing in a lighter tent, which isn't in the budget right now
There are various hostile lifeforms one may encounter when sleeping in the wilderness, and a quilt or a "woobie" (poncho liner) makes it easy to disentangle oneself from sleeping gear and get on the defensive.
Thank you for the plus/minus comparing between these two Ms Hayley👍🏻 Due to my advancing years and faster advancing arthritis in my back, hips and knees my camping is mostly car camping and sleeping on a cot now, what are your thoughts & recommendations on using a quilt on a cot? Such as an underlayment? Thank you so much for your videos, I always learn something new Take care, keep safe and see ya next time👍🏻🙏🏻😃
Excellent video Hayley. I'm still deciding on whether to go a quilt (definitely from Neve if I do) or stick to a sleeping bag again. My old sleeping bag (20+ years old) has had it I think... It doesn't loft as much & the down is gathering in all the wrong places 😂 so probably won't meet its 0* (C) rating any more 🥶 I'm planning on hiking/camping over Autumn/Winter this year, so will need to upgrade soonish. Thanks for the run down and tips 😎
After using your old one for 20+ years it sounds like you deserve a new quilt or bag whichever you choose! You wont know yourself in your shiny new one haha :D
I have a sleeping bag and have just started a 200k hike in Western Australia using an Aussie Zero G Gear synthetic quilt to combat possible condensation in a bivvy bag. You seem to have placed the strappy things on top of your sleeping mat, which would irritate me no end. Maybe it's the design, but my straps go underneath my inflatable mattress and form a snug fit diwn the side of my mattress.
Hi Hayley, great video and very timely. I’m about to pull the trigger on a quilt from Neve too. Just wondering if you still use a liner to protect the quilt?
You have my blessing to pull the trigger 😛 and yeah I certainly do still use my liner - one of my favourite things :) (I just didn’t include it for filming this video) :)
I have always taken a bag, seen many a night when people were cold in their quilt and I was toasty in my bag and weight difference was only 150g. Get a spark 2 bag weights 660g and can use it like a quilt. No brainer
@@settohike hahaha cause colour is everything 😜 well I didn't have a choice as I got the feather tail -12 quilt. (Same colours as yours) But I love the colour! It's even better in person than the photos on the website. I can't get over how ploooooomy the quilt is. It's LUSH!!
YES to quilts for me too! I can't stand being restricted in a sleeping bag 😬. Nice run down for the noobs 👍
haha the joy of going back to those funky leg sleeping positions while camping with a quilt. 😂
Great explanation! We're pretty big top quilt people over here 👋
Thank you! We're quilt crew! 😊
You’re adorable.😊 What a fun way to present this information. I particularly appreciate that you didn’t do what many people do, which is trash on sleeping bags (or quilts) but instead highlighted the benefits and how to properly use a quilt. Well done.
I have a sleeping bag that you can fully unzip to use as a quilt. I love it!
There are also some hybrid designs out there that can be zipped into sleeping bags with hoods and foot boxes, or turned into fully open quilts, or various in-between configurations. Sierra Designs makes a few, not sure who else.
Quilts also work great in a hammock - especially when paired with an under quilt
Thank you Ms Settohike. I never knew quilts were even a thing!
i have been thinking about different sleeping systems for the cold because my mummy bag has cold spots on my bag!
Thanks for the advice Hayley, and the nice little discounts offered on your site.

What a nice and clear video on how a quilt works, thanks! Very helpful.
Why does this make me think of hospital gowns?
I love my quilt in the summer but I'm all mummy bag in the winter. Greatings from Michigan.
Coincidentally, I've just been researching this and have planned to order a neve gear quilt when funds allow :)
Haha the universe is reassuring your decision to purchase 😛

Very informative, thank you! Love being able to move my legs around with my quilt!
Freedom! 😀

Thank you. I just learnt what a quilt is... Thanks
thank you this has to be one of the best explanations i have heard for a quilt vs sleeping bag
i m sleeping while listening to your melody voice😊😄
Hahah I am a big fan of this book called Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker, so I am very happy if I can help you sleep :)
mc strappy strappy thingy! best description ever!

Perfect! I've ordered a quilt from Neve Gear, the kind you reviewed, from South Korea.
