I’m perpetually fascinated by how the heck people fit all this stuff in their pack. I have the pack , I have the stuff , but I couldn’t dream of taking all that. Maybe half lol.
I feel like such an amateur after watching this! But your video has made me realise the importance of compacting. And I’m now ordering anti-blister socks. 🧦 Thank you Hayley!
It's honestly quite comforting to see someone else not going complete ultralight. I just got my gear together for a month-long hike, and the longest one I've done so far is 8 nights. It will be in northern Scandinavia, so I want some safety margins, but seeing basically everyone on youtube and reddit have a sub-5kg base weight and talking down on people who carry more, makes me worried, and makes me second-guess my purchases that honestly were quite expensive. My pack actually has been lighter at some point, I had one of those tents that use hiking poles to set up, but it felt so crammed, my sleeping bag touching the tent wall and so on (and I'm not a tall person). Maybe one day I'll lighten up my pack, but for now, my base weight without consumables is about 9kg. What did yours end up being?
Why do you care about them and listening to what they have to say? They bring almost no 1st aid kit for a 10 day hike.. I carry 20kg no matter if it's overnighter or 5 days trip or 10 (and it would weight more) I don't even consider that as a lot and prefer to have stuff with me and not being obssesive about grams. I would be if I was selling cocaine but don't care if tent is 2kg or 1kg if 2kg served me for 12 years already
Try chucking your tyvek through the washing machine a couple of times it’s supposed to stop it being so crinkly. I still haven’t ordered mine for either of my tents so not sure if it actually works but have heard it does. Great gear load out. Can’t wait for the vids :)
+1 on missing Mountain Designs stores. I bought my first Gore-tex (Meridian) jacket, first decent Polartec, first down sleeping bag and Trangia from their store in Bathurst amongst many other pieces of kit more than 20 years ago to hike the Six Foot Track.
I tested a tyvek groundsheet last year in the Pyrenees and it was great. Like others said, put it through the washing machine once and then the dryer with dryer balls (no heat required) to rough it up. It still made some noise when I un/folded but made no noise once laid down or wrapped up with my tent. You can add gromet ties with some sewing and seam sealer but I haven't done that. I did the Great Ocean Walk in mid-December 2014 with a hammock tent. The hike is colder than people expect; temps drop at night. I stashed a resupply at Johanna Beach in scent proof bags and a dry bag up in a tree so I wouldn't have to carry the full 6-7 days of food! Also, at the time the Otway Historic Site sold camping food and gas so people might want to check that out. I had all my food sorted by I did by a S2S sleeping bag liner at the shop to beef up my warmth at night.
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, greetings from Northern California, U.S. Thank you for sharing this informative video. You did a fine job. It looks like you are set for almost any emergency. Take good care of yourself and stay safe out there. 🏕️ 😎 🙂
March will be a great time! Gaiters more so for all the sand flicking up while walking. (Especially when I film the track and spend a bit of time prancing around in the sand) A little bit for snake protection although mine are not the full length ones so not the most efficient for snakes. If you don't already own gaiters then it wouldn't be a loss if you didn't wear them :)
Thank you! Im trying to learn another editing program to the one I normally use, so I told myself I have to edit the Great Ocean Walk in the other program so its a slow process 😂

Thanks so much for tuning in! 😄I have previously used hiking poles that had sort of like a hard rubber handle and the longer the day goes on the harder they feel. Im sure the good quality hard foam type handles would be great too. But the cork ones just seam to mange the sweat on your hands really well and seam to have the right softness to them. Have fun on your own hikes! 😀

Thanks for watching! 🙂 I am slowly trying to get my base weight lighter (to compensate for my camera haha) so weight is definitely a big consideration. I guess a lot of my decisions come from using something, and if I like it or not i'll see if there is a way to make it better. Such as my new stove, I used to use the Trangia which I loved but knew there was a stove out there that would be lighter but still an alcohol stove! My old hiking poles used to have a hard rubber handle with the soft foam underneath which to me seamed like my hand would sweat a lot/rub by the end of the day. Great gear list and looks like you have some seriously good quality camera gear in there. Where did you pick up your Xero Z Trails? Could you get them locally in Australia or were they online from overseas? I’ve been trying to work out a good camp shoe option and these seem to have really good reviews.
Thank you! haha yeah I was supposed to travel America in 2020 so I put some of my America money towards some new gear instead! I bought the Z trails online from their website (although I have since discovered I think they have an Australian website too) The Z trails were my normal shoe size so no issue with sizing. But I love them! I wear them everywhere in my non hiking life too haha so even if you got a pair and didnt like them for camp I dont think they would go to waste.
@@settohike you were going to America? To do a thruhike? Which one? Bummer! Great video too by the way... I like how you just said what you've got and a couple of extra tidbits of info... I've filmed my gear video and with me explaining why I chose stuff its over an hour long 😳.
@@AmyOutdoors Yeah but mainly just for a 3 month holiday to see important things like m&m world and Disneyland :P Obviously had some day hikes planned but not any multidays. A few things got chopped in the edit!
It's 20,000 miliamp-HOURS, not 20,000 miliamps. Miliampere is a unit of power, while Miliampere-hour is a unit of energy. These power banks typically put out 20 watts at 5 volts, so 4 Amps or 4,000 miliamps.
I just picked up the Mini 2! It’s awesome, and super light/small! In terms of backpacking with it - the remote is somewhat heavy, and the extra batteries would add to the heft. I’m definitely going to bring it on the trail from time to time, but might leave something else at home in its place 👍🏻
I’m perpetually fascinated by how the heck people fit all this stuff in their pack. I have the pack , I have the stuff , but I couldn’t dream of taking all that. Maybe half lol.

@@settohike thanks for the notes on the Z Trails. Think they could become my new camp shoes.
Hopefully I can get there one day soon! Then maybe think about a thru hike after ive finished being a tourist :D haha oh it was so hard to just say an item and then not talk about it more! A few things got chopped in the edit!
🤣 you've got your priorities in the right order then! You'll get there... oneday! I'll get to Canada one day too.
For anyone wondering I added it all up, it's about 15kg without water. I assumed ~2kg for food.
It's 20,000 miliamp-HOURS, not 20,000 miliamps. Miliampere is a unit of power, while Miliampere-hour is a unit of energy. These power banks typically put out 20 watts at 5 volts, so 4 Amps or 4,000 miliamps.
You lost me at the mask haha
So jealous
haha why are you jealous? 🙂
All you need now is the Dji mavic mini 2 only 249 grams with battery.🤣😂
hahah! I thought after all this I cannot add in a drone. I didn't realise that was 249g though! 😛
Not allowed in parks in Vic anyway.
@@bobcrusader oh dear. yes you cant take off from the park but you can fly over it as they don't own the air space. That's a shame. 🥂🥂
I just picked up the Mini 2! It’s awesome, and super light/small! In terms of backpacking with it - the remote is somewhat heavy, and the extra batteries would add to the heft. I’m definitely going to bring it on the trail from time to time, but might leave something else at home in its place 👍🏻
Does Haley girl still have her big pack?
you really filtered tap water?... we are in australia not in america or out back
Have you done the Great Ocean Walk Hike yet?
Yes I have! I am super delayed but the videos are actually coming very soon! :)
so this is basically what women carry in their purse xD
bahah! I have revealed all secrets 😛
