This made me laugh! I mean 24 packets of 2 minute noodles is what we all secretly want to take. Followed by 20 packets of Mi Goreng. I wish you well on breaking your habbit 😛
100% yest to the mash potato dinner. For anyone skeptical, you just have to source a great brand. In N. America, we have Idahoan instant potatoes which are excellent and other brands that are just terrible. Brining freeze dried or deyhyrated mince, spices, veg, and/or some bullion is a great idea!
Hello, Dave from Ohio here. I thought your video on food preparation for a long hike was very informative and interesting. I’m planning to hike and camp to Montana and knowing what I know now because of your video had me thinking. I like your thinking of protein and fiber based foods, dried fruits and of course sugar for quick energy as your snickers bar 😋. Yet, consuming meat protein on one meal makes sense. A good change up. I plan to make granola, like trail mix, I simply enjoy. Thank you for sharing your tips and happy adventures 🙏
This is simply incredible! I've been struggling to eat properly on a trail and here we are :) I'll incorporate your tips in my hiking adventures. Thank you!
Heading to Tassi for the Overland Track for new years and am grateful for all your ideas! Especially lunch and snacks. Will definitely take many wraps and much tuna. Can also confirm Chicken Crimpies are the best shapes
I started a search to try to diversify my food for a ATC thru hike this upcoming season in order to maintain a relatively healthy diet, and this has got to be the best I have seen so far. I couldn't sub fast enough. Great content!
Some great ideas for food on a hiking trip especially from an Aussie the only thing is I feel like it was an unnecessary character assassination of BBQ shapes 😂
Nice, I got some inspo for my own meals, so thanks. Am impressed with your snacks and dinners. One thing I like to do is add a dollop of peanut butter to my oats, with a few blocks of coconut Whitakers chocolate, and Nestle malted milk - my go-to breakfast. You're welcome!
Very nice although I think that for the first day I would bring fresh vegetables (onion, pepper, carrots, fennel, maybe some tomatoes in a plastic bag) and less water.
Wow, great breakdown of your food... Can't believe it's 8 days worth! I'd probably finish all that after the 3rd day! 🤣😂 Was going to say BBQ flavour, but reckon Cheese & Bacon pips it these days 😁 Thanks for the video.
haha I even came home with some leftover snacks too 😛 I think you are the first vote for Cheese and Bacon, I was getting worried that no one cared about cheese and bacon anymore!
I have seen all the dehydration vids and ended up thinking that I eat BAD when on a hike! Glad to see you broke out the 2 minute noodles and continental side dishes. Made me feel much better! I also go the Deb instant mash with dehydrated peas / corn with a cupa soup for flavour. How did you live without 2 minute noodles? My wife is like a hobbit - Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevensies, Lunch, Post Lunch, Threesies, and the noodles get smashed. Indeed I think 50% of my wife's pack might be 2 minute noodles at times...... Oh and BBQ shapes for me.... except for the period where they messed with the formula!
Hahah I honestly don't know, I had those 2 minute noodles on the hike and they went down so well. (I actually think ive taken them on every hike since, although always just the two packets not half my pack like your wife 😂 ) That was a crazy time when they changed the recipes for a bit, I laugh when I see they are still writing original flavour on the boxes.
Love your videos!!..it’s great how you explain everything...,specially when you talk clearly and slow..it helps a lot for non totally English speakers... Do you use Trangia cooking set? It’s my favorite since I started traveling and doing backpacking camping and mountaineering... I wish I could visit your country sometime in the future. Keep on doing videos...,YOU ROCK
Thank you for your lovely comment! I still have my trangia they are great! I switched to a kind of similar cooking set by toaks a few years ago. Only to try and make it a little lighter. But im still a big fan of the spirit burners instead of using gas. Hopefully you can come to Australia sometime in the future! Thanks again! 😄
I would recommend giving strive from Hobart a go as an alternative to back country. Some of them take a bit longer cooking but the flavour is like night and day. Also: pizza is the best.
Yeah backcountry can be a bit hit and miss. I have heard a lot about Strive, I'll definitely have to try it sometime soon! Haha I will tally up your pizza vote 😛
If no one has helped you with the "pho" pronunciation yet, it's closer to "fuh?", with the proper accent sounding like you're asking a question (Vietnamese is tonal based language): "what the fuh?" is the perfect tone!
I always pour my cereal into a bowl first so then i'm pouring the same amount as I would normally eat of a morning. As for protein powder, mine always comes with the scoop to indicate 1 serving. So I put a little bit less than 1 serving of protein powder. If you feel like it tastes too much like protein then i'd just put in 1 heaped tablespoon. But yeah I don't really follow a cereal to protein ratio 🙂🙂
Another great video! Where are you backpacking for 8 days? Also, how much does all your food weigh and how much space (volume) does it take up. Thanks!
Thank you! I went on the Great Ocean Walk 🙂 The food came in at about 5.2kg and the food bag I had was 15L. 44cm (h) x 42.5cm (w) x 12cm (d) It was very full at the beginning will a few of my snacks in a different pocket for the first day.
Thank you, I think its because my food bag is tightly packed and goes near the top of my bag so nothing really has the opportunity to fly around or get squished. But in saying that I don't mind a few bite size biscuit pieces 😛
Thanks for this video. Some great ideas. I’d love to know about how much this weighed, or what you’d be aiming for per day for weight for food. Thanks.
Wow! Cool vid! I'm enjoying your videos - well done! Can I ask though, if this all came in at 5.2kg, how many kgs are you carrying on day 1 of your 8 day walk?
Along with my camera gear, food and water from memory my day 1 was sitting about 18kg. Which was quite a lot for me! Id definitely do a food drop half way next time. and im always working on getting my base weight down! :) Thanks for watching!
It's BBQ and you're going to hell! XD I'm headed out on the GOW this Monday! My food is jerky, pork crackle, tuna, nuts, protein powder/bars and some coffee sachets which is basically a more portable version of my usual diet.
hahah! bring it!! Aw nice! Are you getting excited? What brand/flavour of jerky do you have? I tried it a few years ago and it was horrible but would like to try some again!
@@settohike super excited! I haven't had more than a long weekend in 5 years. Anything biltong is good. I'm not a fan of the typical stuff that's sticky and chewy and about 20% sugar. I just have some chili flavoured Aldi brand this time. If I was better prepared I'd have made my own mint and rosemary lamb jerky but lockdown threw everything into chaos.
It lasted great, although I do always try and eat it within the first few days! (and kind of stack it in the middle of my food bag in case the sun wants to cook my pack)
It honestly depends on the amount you eat and the kind of food you are bringing. On this trip for example I knew I had to carry 8 days worth of food in one go so I made sure everything was dehydrated or as light as possible which ended up being about 650g - 700g per day but I am only small so I might not eat as much as a grown man. I have heard other people taking 2kg of food per day. If I were going on a shorter trip like 3 days, I wouldn’t be as worried about weight I would bring heavier foods like fresh fruit. So it really depends on you. It only takes a few hikes to know what kind of foods you like on a hike :)
Just laughing - so agree.. BBQ shapes worth - fan of chicken crimpy. Doing my first >3day overnight -overland - so keen to understand your snacks - my friend and husband says the answer is 'mars bars' - b/c of fat content.
Well if u need on your adventures give me a shout and I will send the Drone over and drop of a Bacon and egg french stick with some mushrooms.. just call me.🤣😂👏👏👍
Hey mate, do you have any suggestions to make it ‘healthier’ while still being lightweight? Given it was just me carrying food for 8 days I was pretty concerned about weight :)
This has to be the best hiking food list on RUclips. Just superb! Your dehydrated food looks amazing! Thank you for putting this together.
Awesome. I typically take 24 packets of 2 minute noodles for an 8 day trip! Now watching videos like this to try and break my horrible habbit.
This made me laugh! I mean 24 packets of 2 minute noodles is what we all secretly want to take. Followed by 20 packets of Mi Goreng. I wish you well on breaking your habbit 😛
How? I would not be feeling good at all if I tried that.

It's great seeing an Aussie chick doing a video about this topic, Ive been watching a lot lately. Ill def be taking some tips from this.
This is simply incredible! I've been struggling to eat properly on a trail and here we are :) I'll incorporate your tips in my hiking adventures. Thank you!
Changing up from my noodles, baked beans and tuna. Good variety, definitely taking a few of your menu on board.
Great tips! Love the food ideas especially with the details for someone living in Australia
Thank you! 😁 haha yeah feels like we are missing out sometimes when I watch videos from America with all their cool hiking food 😛
Heading to Tassi for the Overland Track for new years and am grateful for all your ideas! Especially lunch and snacks. Will definitely take many wraps and much tuna. Can also confirm Chicken Crimpies are the best shapes
Aww what a nice way to spend New Years! Thank you! I always find lunch the hardest to think of for hiking.
Haha team chicken crimpy! 😀

I love preparing food for multi day hike! And you give some great ideas!
Thanks so much! Haha prepping the food is definitely one of my favourite parts!
I really like your menus of food you make especially the dehydrated ones good job
Chicken Crimpy is definitely the only flavour anyone should be buying 😁😅
Great food list. Great Ocean Walk is on my list 😃
Haha I actually wonder what the sales are for Arnott's with all the flavours 😂 Great hike to have on your list! 😀
Vietnamese PHO, awesome, that's healthy choice ❤. Thanks for sharing ❤
doing the Tour de Mont Blanc this summer. great food ideas, thanks a lot :)

100% Chicken Crimpy
Also, I love the protein hot chocolate idea. Better then just a plain Milo 😊

Very nice although I think that for the first day I would bring fresh vegetables (onion, pepper, carrots, fennel, maybe some tomatoes in a plastic bag) and less water.
Chicken crimpys every time!
Good idea only taking a few hot drinks... I always bring home over half the ones I take.
haha yay! the chicken crimpy club! Yeah I avoid drinking coffee as well so im sure that helps taking less drinks!
Chicken Crimpy for the win!!!! :)
haha! I swap between chicken and pizza, I feel chicken is under-represented though, so for this battle im on the crimpy team 😛
Very useful list. Love your recipe suggestions.
Thank you! It's always quite fun to see what the recipes turn out like after dehydrating 😊
Nice video straight to the point and great ideas! Thank you!

Coles now sells a packet of 8 peanut butter sachets for $4:50 called peanut butter slugs.
Wow this is news! haha hopefully they bring out other nut butters too!

So amny great ideas, i could use these at home too lol!
Shelf stable baby food packets - interesting idea….
Thank you so much for this! I love your videos, loved your old food video and was so excited to see an updated version. 😊
Aww thank you!! Hopefully an improvement from the old one! 😄
BBQ Shapes get my vote....
haha! I'll send any and all BBQ shapes your way!

BBQ Shape's are NOT the worst! :O
haha not even just a little bit worst? 😛
@@settohike No way! The chicken takes the top spot!

Nice Vid! I've gathered a few to things bring with me for a hike, but planning seems difficult. Any suggestions for a 2 or 3 day hike in the tropics?
So helpful 😀😀😀

@@settohike Pizza flavour would have to be a close second 😋
@@stevenpetrou8582 I tend to interchange between pizza and chicken!
Great video!
Thanks! :D
I was thinking getting food dehydrator to make my own. You can propose some brand or product?!
These videos are great. I’m just wondering how you prevent biscuits and crackers from becoming crumbs in zip bags?
Thank you, I think its because my food bag is tightly packed and goes near the top of my bag so nothing really has the opportunity to fly around or get squished. But in saying that I don't mind a few bite size biscuit pieces 😛
Can you give us a link for the bag which contains all the food? How many litres of volume, or which dimensions? [edit: 15 litres, in a comment below]
Thanks for this video. Some great ideas. I’d love to know about how much this weighed, or what you’d be aiming for per day for weight for food. Thanks.
It’s ok. I just read all the comments and found the answer :)
BBQ are by far the superior shape
You cannot be trusted 😂😂
Wow! Cool vid! I'm enjoying your videos - well done! Can I ask though, if this all came in at 5.2kg, how many kgs are you carrying on day 1 of your 8 day walk?

haha! I cant stop laughing when I see a comment pop up about shape flavours! Surprisingly no votes for cheese and bacon yet!
How mutch weight u having about your 8 days great eats?
Looking enough even for day reserve. ..😁
How much did this weight ? I’m off to the overland for 8 days and I’m at 3.3kg ?
I usually get military rations for immersion 😬
that sounds pretty pro! haha 😄

Hi Hayley.
Can I ask the total weight of all that food?
It came in at about 5.2kg 🙂
@@settohike thanks for that. Trying to plan 3 days food for 4 people and have appreciated your videos.
Damn girl you have put my hiking menu to shame 😂
hahah! 😂My job here is done 😛
ill pack the same breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks in between, but somehow i always overpack food....
haha yeah I always come home with leftover food. Could probably survive for an extra 2 days 😋

I’m new to backpacking, how many pounds of food a day is the right choice?

Haha this really is a heated debate 😛
OH! no, Barbecue Shapes are the BEST.

Nacho cheese flavour
You are a unique human! 😛
I used to love the nacho cheese but the changed the recipe. I think cheddar is my favourite, but I like BBQ for hiking.
