  • Finding lightweight food that requires little to no cooking which is suitable for hiking can be hard. Over the last few months I've figured out some good ideas so hopefully this can help with hiking food ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

    All these food options reminds me of when I first started hiking many years ago. I don't like to carry a big range of food anymore when multi day hiking and just keep it really simple and light. Aim is to get walking quickly and clean up as less as possible. Usually a muesli or belvita breakfast bars for breakfast. Lunch is trail mix while walking or a can of tuna and crackers. Dinner is freeze dried meal. You may be interested in smoked chicken breast from the meat section at wollies. It's already cooked and in a kinda salty brine so doesn't spoil as easily. Add it to whatever or in wraps. If you don't use it all put it in a spare zip lock bag and it should be ok for the next night too. Also Sun rice make these curry and rice kits which are in a plastic eating tray but it's actually those silver pouches inside. Heat up pouches in boiling water and add a bit of water to the rice pouch you have curry and rice for dinner with no clean up :)

      Wow thank you so much for the advice! Will definitely have to try that chicken breast and curry. It's quite fun prepping food for multi-day hikes.

    With the salami, non heat treated salami keeps much better, and doesn't need refrigeration. Continental pasta or rice meals are pretty good, Into a zippy bag, add milk powder, if milk is needed, extra herbs or dried veggies, the only rubbish to carry out is the bag. Use the heavy weight bags and you can reuse them. My favourite is the bacon carbonara, add dried mushrooms, and onions, Italian herbs. Fry up some salami pieces, add the contents of the jiffy bag and water and let it cook. Thanks for your advice

    Awesome recommendations, I'll have to add some of these to my list for my next multiway hike! I've been looking for an Australian specific video for a while to find Australian relevant foods!

    I always carry enough of my magnesium powder to have a teaspoon a day, as always. Flavours the water like orange and stops cramps. that I otherwise get at night, especially in situations wher vigourous exercise is involved, like hiking. Weighs nothing. I have it with my brunch.

    You can get dried and pickled veg as well as dried prawns and fish in small portions as well as bean curd in Coles and Asian shops. There are heaps of options these days. Back when we went hiking and camping our go to was timed sardines and pot noodles with dried vegetables. There was no high tech then. The never ending cheese and Vegemite and of course what ever we could scrounge like shellfish from the ocean and of course lentils and muesli etc. these days everything comes in little packets. Like baby food.. Everyone is spoiled for choice.

    Just back from the Tasmanian high country. I took mini toast (like 50 cent coin size) they were great with avocado or peanut butter or Vegemite (I craved the crunch!)

    Hot chocolate powder or milo are both handy options too.
    Milo powder and a slug of peanut butter :)

    Those are some great ideas. One thing that I noticed is missing is fruit. We need fruit for our water-soluble vitamins. Water soluble vitamins need to be replenished every day.

      @AdventuresofKatelyn  3 года назад

      Of course, I should have added this into the video but obviously just depends how long you are going for and how long the fruit will last in your bag 🙂

      They are nice, but unfortunately they are heavy and bulky, if you have more than one or two cups of coffee a day.

    Be very careful of those instant meals if you are sensitive to MSG, as it is an additive in many of them.BE VERY CAREFUL TO READ THE LABELS. I had a terrible reaction to Vesta instant meals, due to the MSG on the Overland Track, and swelled up like a balloon.i had no idea I was sensitive to it, until that point and it's not a good place to discover you have a food additive intolerance, so do try the meals before you go. Lucky I had antihistamines on me and realised the food was the cause.There were not the options back then that there are now in terms of choices. I ended up eating our lunch stuff, essentially peanut butter on pumpernickel bread, or some cheese, for many of my meals, whllst my trail mate ate my Vesta dinner for her lunch. As a result of that experience I now tend to carry a stock of pasta and rice, dried onions, peas and corn, salami and the tuna and salmon sachets, as well as some stock cubes and sachets of tomato paste and curry powder plus a few herbs and do most of my meals from scratch, but quickly. It is also great to carry some parmesan and Laughing Cow cheese as both are okay unrefridgerated and pretty light. I don't do breakfast at home, and I never manage to keep it down when hiking either, but I do drink a couple of extra cups of tea. I then do brunch, rather than lunch, and then just dinner in the evening.
    Did you take as much packaging off as you could pre hike, to save on weight?
    You can also do dishes like spagetti bolognaise, chop suey, curries and casseroles and dehydrate them at home yourself.
    Back in 88 there was not a place to get a burger at Lake St Claire, when we came off the track, but a very fond memory is all of us that had become trail mates, pooling such left over food as we had at our camp at Lake St Claire and some very kind campers, that had previously done the Overland Track, donating us all some fresh eggs, that we scrambled. Fresh eggs had never tasted so good as that night and our humble shared left over hike stuff was amazingly tasty, as a result. We had a fabulous end of track celebration with fellow hikers. It was fantastic. Oh and certainly no buses to get you direct to an airport. I actually think we may have hitched a lift to Launceston, from where we hired a car. Back then, I think we all regarded our final night's camp at Lake St Claire National Park Camp Ground, as the actual completion of the Overland Track experience. It was where the track officially finished, or started at that time, Not sure if it still is.
