The soundtrack is bloody amazing in this game, I remember having the Megadrive version when I was younger but I always skipped the opening to get on shooting things.
It should be noted that two-player simultaneous play was only available in the US arcade version (i.e., the Williams release). Zero Wing was originally a one-player game.
Every time I hear about this game, I am like "okay okay, the meme - got it - but let's talk about the goddamn gameplay already". It was nice to see that this video had that approach as well, and mostly just mentioned the meme a little bit and then talked about the actual game, instead of talking about the meme for like 90% of the video.
I agree with you all the way on this one, Mark. Zero Wing is a great shmup, and I still play it from time to time. Really should have gotten a Genesis release.
yes for sure - i distinctly remember being mind blown as a lad seeing altered beast for the 1st time but the little sega 16 bit box of childhood dreams still doesnt fail to surprise and neither does mester Mark at CGR which is why i loves both
Great Scott! Forcing so much concentrated awesome into one single video would open a rift in the universe and unravel the space time continuum! Are you mad?!?
i like to take an interest in these matters but it's great that after all these years there is still stuff of interest from the vaults of viddy game history :)
thanks for the look ! had a chance to pick this up for pce the other week got Download in its place. i plan on adding this to my import shumps by xmas needless to say...
hola senor! saw a sneeky cheeky vid you posted about potential location of the citadel of ultimate power which you had posted and was very pleased to see the dream is coming into fruition!! bleedin' grand to hear from you man! massive, massive rather gigantic respect floated t'wards thy general direction my good man! how the devil are ye?
That's the very reason why I like Classic Game Room so much. I don't need Mark to be overly negative and trash games just because he could, I have AVGN or Yahtzee for that. And like I said, there are games he does't really care for, look at his review of Dark Void, the Hyperscan, Ridge Racer 64 or that Starsky and Hutch game he did recently.
Maybe it's just me, but I think his reviews are like that, he just doesn't tend to dwell on any of the negative aspects as much as many other critics like to.
Powered by fear? Why not laughter? Mike and Sully has proven that to be much better, and you make us laugh enough to supply the Arcade for like a thousand and seven years :P
All jokes aside, Zero Wing is an amazing game, and along side Ys: Books I and II, Streets Of Rage 2, and Power Rangers on the Genesis, this is my one of my favorite soundtracks ever.
There is also a secret 4th level power-up. It all just depends on luck though as there is a random chance to get it, where you get a purple power-up that makes the firepower really huge.
As was the case with Midnight Resistance and Truxton, the arcade music is extremely bland in comparison to the Mega Drive version. In this case, the PC Engine is on the CD add-on and has kickass arranged music, so that also makes the arcade OST bite the dust. However, I think it goes without saying that the arcade version looks and plays better.
Toaplan's OPL2 soundtracks had a vibe to them that was missing in the Megadrive versions. That's the same sound chip as the Soundblaster though Toaplan made much better use of it than most PC games ever managed to (most PC games just set the operators and envelope and then triggered notes and didn't do any realtime modification of the parameters). The bass sounds in particular were really good in Toaplan's OPL soundtracks. The Genesis/Megadrive version of Zero Wing and a few other Toaplan ports were actually made by Toaplan themselves. It's a pity Twin Cobra wasn't though.
There are games that he doesn't like, just like anyone else, but he chooses not to focus on the negative. Mark never comes out and says that something sucks, because in his mind every thing has to appeal to somebody, and because that it must have something to it that is worth focusing on, without dwelling on all of the bad things. And FYI, just because you don't happen to like something, doesn't mean everyone is going to share your opinion. Some people may, but some will not. That's just life.
Really well as far as I can see. The musics better on the Megadrive. Graphically pretty much identical and the features of the game are there too..same gameplay and patterns. Real good conversion, I'd say. One player only on the MD.
For a game this infamous, Zero Wing is not actually that expensive. I got my European MD version complete in box for about 10 euro. By the way, the MD version is region free, so there is no reason not to just import it and play it on a Genesis. It's just too bad the MD version doesn't have a two-player mode.
it's awesome that you say Mega Drive, and not Sega Genesis. Here in Brazil it's megadrive, so I was confused for years when people talked about sega genesis on the net.
Yeah man. We're the same in the UK. And Europe. And Japan. Just the North Americans got the Genesis tag. Same legendarily great machine. Im pleased to hear that the console is big over there with you guys still. There is hope for the world yet hahaha This game never saw release for the US Genesis though. Just one for the Megadrive regions, by the looks of it.
@@dgpnetwork Genesis means creation. I have heard that they used the name because they wanted Christians to buy the games. I don't know if it are true but it may be.
It's going to be hard to find power for the Intergalactic Space Arcade, since most other review shows have bowed to Lord Karnage already. Not much fear left in the RUclips universe to feed off of. Better consider some Intergalactic Space Generators soon CGR.
Cool, I have both the Megadrive and PC Engine versions, and I think the PC Engine version is the best one, but not by much. Would be a nice one to own the arcade PCB for.
Sadly when the space arcade was destroyed by Truxton and MUSHA so was this great game cabinet! However they say Mark the chubby scavenger of games some how survived.
Guys... let's think of it this way. He cared about this video, Mark, and the arcade game so much that he actually wrote a long and detailed comment about how bad the level design of an old arcade game is. I don't see anybody complaining about how Pong is like. (but that's probably because it has the best graphics in the world) If he watched any of Mark's other classic game reviews (I'm sure he had if he knows Mark's name), then I'm sure that he must be joking. Be real here.
I'm sure they didn't even play it. That whole list was nothing more than "let's compile a list of ten games that everyone has already heard about, and then arbitrarily list them!"
The soundtrack is bloody amazing in this game, I remember having the Megadrive version when I was younger but I always skipped the opening to get on shooting things.
This is one of my favorite arcade games ever.
i never knew it was an arcade game..well u learn something new everyday with CGR
WHAT YOU SAY!!
It should be noted that two-player simultaneous play was only available in the US arcade version (i.e., the Williams release).
Zero Wing was originally a one-player game.
The game has a 90's feel even though it technically came out in the 80's.
Getting arcade ports onto the Genesis was one of SEGA's marketing strategies.

I love Toaplan shooters! It makes me sad that Toaplan is no longer around. The Japanese Mega Drive version isn't too expensive.
Mark playing an awesome game with an awesome music
I agree with you all the way on this one, Mark. Zero Wing is a great shmup, and I still play it from time to time. Really should have gotten a Genesis release.
Oh yes, there is the 2 player version with publisher Williams. The 2 player coop is absent in the original version (Toaplan published in Japan)
1:04 Pro Wrestling on the NES, famous for "A WINNER IS YOU!"
yes for sure - i distinctly remember being mind blown as a lad seeing altered beast for the 1st time but the little sega 16 bit box of childhood dreams still doesnt fail to surprise and neither does mester Mark at CGR which is why i loves both
You made my night. The dude abides.
Great Scott! Forcing so much concentrated awesome into one single video would open a rift in the universe and unravel the space time continuum! Are you mad?!?
daym I've forgotten about this for 20 years. I was scared playing this game at 10.
i like to take an interest in these matters but it's great that after all these years there is still stuff of interest from the vaults of viddy game history :)
full gameplay of this?
The best video game review show
This game is great.
Gametrailers didn't know that they were talking about when they put it in the top 10 worst games.
KungKras yep great soundtrack
His space arcade is awesome

Interesting fact: This uses an OPL2 sound chip. They definitely make better use of it that most PC games ever did.

You did Zero wing! YES!
Maybe it's just me, but I think his reviews are like that, he just doesn't tend to dwell on any of the negative aspects as much as many other critics like to.
Man, I spent a lot of coins playing this in the arcade near my old school!
Now available with Hellfire from M2 Shottriggers. 😎
most epic review intro ever
@2:40 that backround and stage itself reminds me of the 1st lelel in METAL MORPH for the SUPER NINTENDO
What a game finished it today on the Megadrive with save states lol
Just after hearing Mark say 'All your base are belong to us.' made me really wish he reviews the MegaDrive version c:
Powered by fear? Why not laughter? Mike and Sully has proven that to be much better, and you make us laugh enough to supply the Arcade for like a thousand and seven years :P
Oh wait, isn't Mark's Intergalactic Space Arcade orbiting the planet? He really should watch out for CATS out there!
Having played Outzone on the arcades, I can instantly tell thats Toadplan's style music lol
Man that's a sweet machine~
All jokes aside, Zero Wing is an amazing game, and along side Ys: Books I and II, Streets Of Rage 2, and Power Rangers on the Genesis, this is my one of my favorite soundtracks ever.
Man, I forgot that meme was a thing.
This actually looks fairly fantastic. I'll have to check it out again.
Mark needs to get a Dangun Feveron/Fever SOS cabinet.
That would be AWESOME!!!!
I want this cabinet in my room.
There's an indie shoot'em all called ETHER VAPOR on steam, it's pretty neat, wish i could buy it for mark
There is also a secret 4th level power-up. It all just depends on luck though as there is a random chance to get it, where you get a purple power-up that makes the firepower really huge.
Only on Mega Drive / Genesis. There is no 4th level in the arcade.
He needs to review the mega drive version
WAIT! what is the original cab for that game ???
Where can I get CGR stickers?
Im gonna go watch the all your base are belong to us video now :P

Why do you cut the intro so early? I want to hear the theme. It's awesome.
other then the cut scenes , how does the mega drive version hold up to the arcade?

Mega Drive was copyrighted by another company in the U.S. so Sega had to come up with a new name.

this game looks awesome! me want!!!
That’s awesome 😎

This game is fucking hard man
everyone should have a Zero Wing, For Great Justice!
Mega Drive Version ( Sega Genesis)?
And there we have it. Solid proof that the SEGA MEGADRIVE is the greatest console there ever was.
Mark can you please do a re-review of Gaiares for the Sega Genesis? Which happens to be the GREATEST and HARDEST shmup game of ALL TIME?!
Must go find the Tomato ending... if I recall right.
How much mark pays for electricity?
what's a megatron?
This game does have a pretty good soundtrack, tres bein!
Needless to say, I had to download this game on my Genesis Ultimate Portable.
Miuito legal este review

Awesome
Let's not forget the excellent MARS-MATRIX.... or Gaplus.
In year 1980 CGR was beginning
"STUPID ALIENS! Nobody likes you! Not even me!" LOL
All Your Intergalactic Space Arcade Are Belong To Us!
all your intergalactic space arcade belong to us
It was the European version that had the bad English translation, and that version is only in PAL format.
Makes you wonder if he's gonna review modern arcade games in his intergalactic space arcade (Terminator Salvation, H2Overdrive, Razing Storm).

I have the Mega Drive version of this game!!
Somebody set up us the bomb !!
Somebody set us up The BOMB!!!!

He was talking about the Mega Drive. This game was never on the Genesis.
The Mega Drive version of the song, "New Day for Me", is superior!
Though I would also turn the machines off, I would be nice to leave them on and give them life. Life like it used to have.
2:21 Classic Game Son
This game is now free online in flash, but I myself can't even complete level 1. D:
He even liked the notorious ps2 Silpheed...
zero wing is tight

I thought that quote came from Dune or something like that.
