Hey everyone, MrJohn here and today we´re gonna review the 3rd installment of the Ridge Racer franchise, Rage Racer is it good or is it bad? Find out in this review. Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com/MrJohnReviews
Still playing this in 2020... Setup: Modified 9000 series PS1, along with the American NTSC game version (red disc) and the NeGcon (NPC-101) controller (full twist option and the 'H' setting) - full grip driving, automatic, half BGM, and first person view. I first got the gold screen last year, and I tried for days to get class six boxed off. I worked really hard for it. What a feeling to have finally done it, and to see a gold title screen. It may seem like a small reward, but it's a reminder that brings a smile every time you load up the memory card. Some of you may have noticed that the trophy screen goes into double digits for each class... Well, I'm aiming to see what will happen when they each get to 99 - 100. Who knows what will happen? :D
I loved the bright and vivid aesthetic of the first two games, but this sequel's darker and more serious aesthetic is awesome too! Like a kid growing up to a teen XD
The soundtrack for this game is just so good sometimes when I play Gran Turismo 2 I listen to the rage racer OST! Goes pretty well when doing 99 laps in Rome
Soon after,Ridge Racer PSP return 2 courses from Rage Racer, which is Lakeside & Union Hill District (steep hill) with Glorious Quality Also, the soundtrack from this game "Silver Stream" is on Ridge Racer PSP as well with remastered quality
Manual gears aren't that hard to use. They allow you to have more control over your car and what you can do with it. 9/10 manual gears will have a slight advantage over automatic. Plus once you learn how they work, they're applicable to literally any other racing game. Even real life to an extent.
I enjoyed playing Rage Racer back in the day. Such a great game with a banging soundtrack too. Man, I could NOT drive in third person mode in Rage Racer! The car felt slow to turn no matter the make. First person view felt way more responsive. As for progress I got as far as the final class in Extra GP. I got a 1st in the reverse oval track with an Age car no less, but I just couldn't drive on the other tracks because the cars are just way too fast! And as you said in the review, driving manual on the other tracks is HARD.
This is my favourite game of the franchise. And the game that made me fall in love with the franchise. Also Surprisingly is the only racing game that i use the cockpit camera instead of the Behind the car view.
I didn't get around to watching this yesterday, but nice review! It made me want to watch the opening again, which inspired me to edit it. So I've uploaded it if you haven't seen it yet.
Personally I think its controls are some of the worst in racing game history. It doesn't feel intuitive at all and the car doesn't react anything like a real one would. I find myself having to hold the accelerator while I brake so the car doesn't spaz out. Proper braking mechanics with a separate button for handbrake/drifting would have helped a ton. I really hope that it will be possible one day to reverse engineer the game to rebuild it with some proper handling like in the Gran Turismo or Need for Speed games. Also the AI clearly cheats, always knocking you back even if they hit you from behind and having immensely better speed and cornering, which is worsened by the game's frankly piss-poor collision detection. I mean even small lawn curbs act like walls and the car is much bigger than it looks. It's sad really that it's such a chore to play when every other aspect of the game is pretty neat. Heck, even handling akin to that of more recent Ridge Racer titles from the mid 00's would have helped it greatly. In the meantime I guess I'll stick with Gran Turismo 3 and Lego Racers 2 lol. And you know, making AI cars playable would be cool too.
Right before playing this for the first time a couple days ago, I unlocked the Himmel EO in RRV, and I legitimately believed drifting in a Ridge Racer game couldn’t be more cumbersome… I was very wrong…
Nice little review, thank you. :) You only failed to mention the great NEgCon steering in this game, which is THE way to play this game! Good times. :) So, how bout that R4-review? :)
You actually owned Demo One Version 5?! This is despite the fact, that in North America, there was no Demo One, since the Demo Ones that came out in North America were the Interactive CD Samplers that were way different from the Demo Ones that Europe got. I only wonder in which part of Europe you were when you had that demo disc. It seems that you are one of the few North American gamers who got hold of a PAL PS1 with Demo One Version 5 bundled in. In North America, a demo of Rage Racer was included on not one, but two discs: Disc 2 of the very first volume of PlayStation Underground, and the very first ever Jampack released in the summer of 97. The North American demo is similar to the PAL demo, with a few minor differences.

Another thing I love about the game is that each car gets its own speedometer design!
They even changed at dark areas
"Ridge Racer Type 4 music was forgettable"
big LOL
But it was
@@wieldylattice3015 no its not
@@Blueflag04 Alright, can you name a song from it?
"since the only obstacle you have to dodge is the opponents"
Walls: *Cries in the corner*

They took the most memorable sample out of the song, though.
Great review, I always loved Rage Racer, upgrading your car to see what it would like in the next class was always so cool.
This game looks nice! I remember playing it on ePSXe! I really love how the Squaldon sounds like an 90s F1 car!

Well I’ve got some bad news, supposed automatic gears have started overtaking manuals in efficiency… still at least manuals are fun eh?

14:53 "Silver Stream"
imo Rage Racer > R4
also, do you'll review Psygnosis games ?
Will you look into Ridge Racer Type 4 & Ridge Racer V as well?

The handling is really weird. One drift, and you lose a lot of speed.
Btw, my favorite car in this game is the Esperanza.

I found drifting easier in Ridge Racer than Rage Racer tbh
If You notice,I see "HENTAI" decals
Aha the sound comparison!!! Love it!!!!

An epic review.
100% Agreed

Yes I owned the Version 5 of Demo One good times, also I'm from Europe
Life must have holded you down hard if it took you this long to make this review, excellent review tho.
Thanks :)
