Great review, but Im suprised that you didn't talk more about flipping your car over and tumbling like a run away bouncy castle. It's the thing I remember the most from this game and Ive never seen a racing game with such an unusual crashing mechanic
The controls really are terrible. I played it with a steering wheel and I'm sure that helped but it was still very twitchy. Changing the oversteer is a must.
I still have this game on PS1 and plan to play VRally 2 this afternoon on my Dreamcast :-). I remember the positivity around this game at the time, largely because of the graphics. Personally, I initially found the game to be a frustrating mix of wanting to play more to improve and the irritation of those twitchy controls. But you're absolutely right here, a bit of practice and some set-up tweaks really do pay dividends ... and it's very rewarding when you suddenly start becoming more competitive. I rate Colin McRae Rally 2.0 as the best rally game on PS1, then VRally2, then VRally.
Great video! V-Rally is a very difficult game with quirky controls and strange physics. However, with lots of practice, this frustrating game can be mastered and enjoyed. I still play from time to time. Lots of tracks and always an intense, white-knuckled racing experience.
Loved this game back in the day. As a Brit it seems so weird hearing Need For Speed in the title. Its like V-Rally was pimped out in the states, wasnt V-Rally 2 under the Test Drive name over there, pretty sure the DC version was.
I didn't like it back then due to the lack of weight for the cars, it's weird to explain but it give a floating feeling to the driving and i hate that, Colin mac Rae Rally 1 year after just completely won me over.
To me it gave it a sense of realism and kept you fearful of the fact that things could go horribly wrong at a blink of an eye just like in real life rally driving but your right about Colin McRae Rally 1 it's my favourite rally game of that generation and was better in many ways.
This was the first racing game I ever played. As such, I don't remember the controls to be as bad as described, probably because I didn't have any reference. I do remember the game to be a lot of fun to play with friends and family in splitscreen mode. I even remember most of the tracks even though I was only 3 or 4 years old when playing.
I'm definitely looking forward to your reviews of V-Rally 2 and V-Rally 3 once they come along. I never played the games to know, but my gut instinct tells me that those games should control better because of the benefits of the Dreamcast and Xbox controllers having analog triggers.
I briefly showed Test Drive: V-Rally on one of the "60 FPS Dreamcast Games" videos. It left a nice first impression. RalliSport Challenge is still my favorite, for now.
When i saw V-Rally for the first time in a magazine, i thought the graphics are looking great. But then i played it tzhe first time on the PC then, i cursed the twitchy controls and consider it to be more or less unplayable. The sequel on the other hand seems much better to me in terms of control (and graphics too). I suggest to give that game a look instead of the first one. I really loved V-Rally 2 back in the days. Very good Video btw. Keep up the good work (if you like)
I've owned V-Rally 2 (Test Drive V-Rally) for a while but never felt all that compelled to play it. My heart belongs to Ralli Sport Challenge on the Xbox :)
Actually, Eden Games closed in 2013 when Atari went bankrupt, and reopened again making Gear.Club for IOS. The publisher behind the N64 version (Infogrames) published the game in Europe as well.
Right you are, the "2008" was supposed to go after "Alone in the Dark Reboot" not after "closing down." Just didn't catch it while working on the script :(
I guess you forgot to mention Test Drive Unlimited 2. Sometime could you look at V-Rally 2? (Need for Speed: V-Rally 2 on PS1, and Test Drive: V-Rally on the Dreamcast)
Both games are exactly the same outside the title and platform. I strangely prefer that game over to V-Rally 1 (In Europe it went under the name "V-Rally 97 Championship Edition" or "V-Rally Championship Edition" when Infogrames re-released it with an extra car and DualShock controller support).
Nice vid Kris! Good editing and great balance in all the audio. Concerning the game; Sega Rally on Saturn was sooo much better, but this was still an entertaining game IMO
Sega rally and Colin McRae Rally 1 where the two best rally games of that generation in my opinion. The fact that they still look and play amazingly good today is a testament to that.
Since you like racing games a lot I have a feeling you drive something cool. I'm guessing something unique like a Mercury Maurader or Impala SS. That or a WRX or EVO since it looks like you like Rally type games.
I used to drive an RX-8 which I liked but was as fuel efficient as an SUV and loved to flood its engine. Now I drive a very boring hatchback, with a manual shift of course :)
Please do one for Need for Speed: V-Rally 2! Also would you consider this a spinoff I know they had different names in other countries and what not but I would consider it a spinoff
I would not consider this a Need for Speed game but someone could argue either way, and I'm sure someone has :D I have V-Rally 2 on the Dreamcast and V-Rally 3 on the Xbox and will eventually get to them.
I prefer the this over the sequel but it has a very steep learning curve. The sequel is an amazing game in it's own right and is much more accessible and easier to master
i binged your videos over the past couple weeks these reviews are generally very very well done and i love to see retro reviews of original Xbox and ps2 games a generation not touched apuon usley
Glad to hear it! I have a massive Xbox collection and will slowly get through them. I agree this console generation (Xbox/GCN/PS2 and to a lesser extent Dreamcast) is very unrepresented on RUclips at the moment. I imagine that will change as the Xbox gets older and folks get nostalgic for it. Cheers!
sounds like that last reviewer wasn't able to adapt to the controls. I remember this game having a fairly steep learning curve but it was awesome once you got a little good at it. :)
This game was NEVER good. Rally Cross was the superior Playstation rally game of its time despite it's fictional nature. It even had analog support before Sony released the Dual Shock controller, which made it a joy to play.
Great review, but Im suprised that you didn't talk more about flipping your car over and tumbling like a run away bouncy castle. It's the thing I remember the most from this game and Ive never seen a racing game with such an unusual crashing mechanic
I remember renting this from Blockbuster back int he day!
Larry Bundy Jr great seeing you notice this channel!
Ah renting games, how quaint life used to be :D
Emily Shaffer spammer
It annoying that shows up in my "spam" folder but other folks still see it...
The controls really are terrible. I played it with a steering wheel and I'm sure that helped but it was still very twitchy. Changing the oversteer is a must.

I really need to check out Colin McRae!
I preferred Colin McRae Rally 1 over the sequel but the sequel was a great game nonetheless
Great video! V-Rally is a very difficult game with quirky controls and strange physics. However, with lots of practice, this frustrating game can be mastered and enjoyed. I still play from time to time. Lots of tracks and always an intense, white-knuckled racing experience.
As goofy and broken as the physics in this game are, I still adore it haha :)
Exactly. There's an even trickier N64 version called V Rally 99 I believe which has more and slightly better modelled cars.
Loved this game back in the day. As a Brit it seems so weird hearing Need For Speed in the title. Its like V-Rally was pimped out in the states, wasnt V-Rally 2 under the Test Drive name over there, pretty sure the DC version was.
Need for Speed V-Rally 2 on the PS1
Test Drive V-Rally on the Dreamcast
I didn't like it back then due to the lack of weight for the cars, it's weird to explain but it give a floating feeling to the driving and i hate that, Colin mac Rae Rally 1 year after just completely won me over.

The graphics look fantastic for sure. I personally like the first Colin Mcrae Rally on PS1, the first one. Doesn't look as pretty as this though.
I really need to track down Colin McRae on the PS1!
I also have always thought Colin Mcrae 1 was the best. That game along with FIA World Rally Championship. 👍🏻
This was my first game when i got my PS1 in 1997 and i loved it so much.
If anyone is playing Ps1 games today do yourself a favor and make sure you're playing on a CRT television. It looks awesome.
Exactly playing on a modern TV ruins the experience
I'm definitely looking forward to your reviews of V-Rally 2 and V-Rally 3 once they come along. I never played the games to know, but my gut instinct tells me that those games should control better because of the benefits of the Dreamcast and Xbox controllers having analog triggers.
Even tho i'm a DC fanatic i much preferred the PS1 version of V-Rally 2.
I briefly showed Test Drive: V-Rally on one of the "60 FPS Dreamcast Games" videos. It left a nice first impression. RalliSport Challenge is still my favorite, for now.
Yeah love Rallisport. I think the sequel is my favourite console Rally game ever.
One of the hardest rally games I've ever played but it can be beat. And I loved the challenge ,great game of its day.
Had this as a kid and was way too hard for me back then. Never won a race or probably never even finished one.
The sequel is probably better. That's the one I grew up with!
I prefer this but then again I grew up playing this like you did the sequel so it holds a sentimental value
When i saw V-Rally for the first time in a magazine, i thought the graphics are looking great. Thanks for the info and glad you enjoyed the video :)
More old school racing games, please! V-Rally 2 is a lot better. Worth check it out.
Haha, reviewing this made me want to revisit some, especially Sega Rally and Sled Storm :)
Great vid
Low fidelity but still beautiful after all these years.
I used to adore this game yet strangely wasn't as keen on the sequels! :)
I've owned V-Rally 2 (Test Drive V-Rally) for a while but never felt all that compelled to play it. My heart belongs to Ralli Sport Challenge on the Xbox :)
implantgames Yes..! Rallisport Challenge on Xbox was my fav racing game as well! Loved the split screen action and the beautiful gfx
The game still blows me away, hard to believe it's 15 years old!
Surely you mean 20 years old!! Pretty sure it was pre 97!! :)
I meant Rallisport Challenge haha!
Excellent content, subscribed

I'll get to Test Drive: V-Rally at some point. I don't own the PSX version however. At least not yet.

Is the N64 version worth playing?
Nice vid Kris! Good editing and great balance in all the audio. Concerning the game; Sega Rally on Saturn was sooo much better, but this was still an entertaining game IMO
Thanks! And yes, Sega Rally's smooth controls, especially the drifting, is still phenomenal.
Sega rally and Colin McRae Rally 1 where the two best rally games of that generation in my opinion. The fact that they still look and play amazingly good today is a testament to that.

I was right on the unique part! I almost bought an RX8 a couple of years ago. I still want one. Maybe someday.
Manuals make boring cars fun =)
It's always more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow ;)
What about original Gran Turismo, does it still hold up?
I haven't played the PSX Gran Turismo games in 10+ years, I'm not sure!
Well I hope you will play it, I'm looking forward to video on it.
Gran turismo 1 and 2 the best racing games of that generation and one of the best of all time
It was never that great, Colin McRae Rally is waaaay better on the PSX.
Utter tripe. The physics ruin absolutely everything about this game.
First game had crap physics, second game had crap courses. I really need to play the third game...
It had a steep learning curve but once you got the hang of it, it was an amazingly good game
This or V-Rally 2?
I prefer the this over the sequel but it has a very steep learning curve. The sequel is an amazing game in it's own right and is much more accessible and easier to master
I had the N64 version and found it unplayable. The controls are awful.
Looked awful too
I'm here before it's been out for 3 years
Can you rewiew V-Rally 3?
:( only 800s views your channel needs more
I'll be alright :)
i binged your videos over the past couple weeks these reviews are generally very very well done and i love to see retro reviews of original Xbox and ps2 games a generation not touched apuon usley

maybe look for v rally 2 or sega rally for saturn owners.
It might be time, I think it's been a few years since I've fired it up.
sounds like that last reviewer wasn't able to adapt to the controls. I remember this game having a fairly steep learning curve but it was awesome once you got a little good at it. :)
Great Great videogame
This game was NEVER good. Rally Cross was the superior Playstation rally game of its time despite it's fictional nature. It even had analog support before Sony released the Dual Shock controller, which made it a joy to play.
Good to know!
The PAL version is not written in the game and on the cover. Only American.
V-Rally is garbage. V-Rally 2 is amazing.
I disagree with both of these statements ;)
back when nfs used to be great......
but its not a nfs game
sega rally's controls were far better
I'm first I have no idea what to do?
