Unbelievable how you fixed my service technique with your advice. Have got so many hours of tennis training in my life to end up having 35% first serves in and having generally 12 double faults per match. Played my first match after watching your videos and got a rate of 76% first serves in with 2 double faults and improved speed. Thank you so much Ryan, I'm finally enjoying playing again.
Wow that’s an unbelievable comment. I’m so excited to hear your serve improves with the advice. Thanks for letting me know and thanks for trusting me to help you with your game!!
Thank you for demonstrating how to kick serve from the deuce court for a right-hander .. I think you're the first one who shows us what that looks like!
I love that it shows the process of trying and trying to get it right! It gives the right expectation that it requires a lot of practice until you get one right and then increase the number of correct serves you get. Cheers!
I love your tutorials. Your advice and your way of teaching are helping me to improve. Yesterday, I tried a Kick Serve and I did it!! Of course I need practice :) You are a great Coach!!! Thank so much!!!
Nice instruction! The tip to NOT hit a kicker at the TOP of the toss is excellent! It should be obvious for any stroke applying topspin that you need to continue the upward motion, but after playing tennis for 40+ years, it was not obvious to me until you pointed it out. 👍🏻
Yes!! I know. It’s not easy. I’m trying to get better at it, too! But these tips are helping me get better and I know everyone will get better using these tips as well.
Hey. I want appreciate for this video. In my last match I put your advice into action and I must to say that my serve improved A LOT ! I was able to do some aces and i'm not a player to do many aces.. thanks ! Greetings from Argentina
Very well explained. It has opened my eyes of how to hit different serves. Thank you! Also you need to keep your left arm for right handers tucked in to be more side on while serving.
It's a great move to leave the video unedited, mistakes and all. Somehow, makes it more relatable and easier to pick up points.....Keep up the good work!
I've watched a lot of other tennis teachers trying to convey this difficult concepts and none of them got to be this instructive. You have really opened my eyes and I am forever grateful to you. I wish we be able to enjoy your channel for a long, long time!
Great video. It would be nice if you explain how to return different type of serves. I know I will never be able to learn a great serve but I maybe able to return some of these serves.
You know what’s funny? People have really appreciated that. If you watch my videos you know I like to push record, start talking, and then stop the video. I’m a one take kind of guy. Haha. People have been commenting that they like seeing me miss. Lol. Have a great day!!
Hi Ryan, I'm playing doubles 1 and yesterday I had a tennis match for my school. My kick serves weren't going in, so I dinked them to the opponent and my doubles partner was getting destroyed on the net. I should be doing my english homework rn but I really wanna work on this kick serve. Great video btw and really good job explaining the racquet path like a rainbow. Great work man!
I'm not a pro but just an amateur player. The way I change my grip is with my none dominant hand. Btw I'm a righty so I use my left hand to turn the racket to the right grip. I hope it helps.
Great video ! love how you show the 'errors' which are just the practice swings to get to the right motion. Practice practice practice! Thanks for the inspiring instruction, keep it up... (roscoe tanner flat serve, ha!)
@@2MinuteTennis it's part of the process! Very very smart very professional very understandable thank you very very much for your learning how to make a kick sore very usable one more time thank you very much
Like video. I usually hit a power slice or topspin for second serve but I'm working to get effective kick. You have to get it down effectively or it will sit up like a hanging curveball in baseball and the returner just crush it. As far as the kick to the deuce I like to hit it at returners body and have it jump to his BH. Seems like I can get more power and kick and if slice out wide and flat to T is working it gives him something else to worry about.
Great tip about placing the toss slightly ahead of the body. However, regarding the grip, I think that Becker had a pretty good kick serve and yet he seemed to move his grip slightly to the forehand so the racket face was more open.
Howdy. Everyone is different, including the pros, so it's not surprising you'll see variation. But I think Ryan makes a great and simple point, that other things equal, if you shade your Continental grip even more toward the Eastern bh grip, that will change the angle of the racquet face so as to 'shave' the ball even more, thus kick. We hope :)
Yes legs are important. My knees hurt from 37 years of tennis so it’s hard for me to involve my legs as much as I’d like. But try your best and see how it works for you. Thanks Ed!!
There’s a video on RUclips that claims the left to right movement of the ball on a kick serve is very hard to achieve even for some pros. Perhaps you could find a decent teacher to monitor your serve, Smiley? And you might need more patience. He sort of makes it look easy, and it isn't. I never 'got it' in spite of being a decent junior player. But I never really stuck with it, and never got lessons from a good pro to help with it. Instead, I learned mostly from my dad, who was an 'old school' hitter of a lot of flat and slice shots. So - get some good feedback and stick with it. I'll try to do the same ;) If someone can get this serve by just watching this video and trying it for a few minutes, my guess is they are exceptionally talented.

Yes. Take the arm off and practice the upward movement on the ball. Here’s an example of using it for topspin serve: ruclips.net/video/WiubMAoW3OE/видео.html
not heard you say "hit with the leading edge" before but that got me off to practice tonight see if i can kick serve those old buggas off the court LOL and if not have fun trying. thanks for the video. No roast from me 😁
Ryan take you back to video in which you you marked the net where you should be aiming. From the deuce court on a r/h serve you were aiming about 1-1.5 ft to the right of the net strap. Does the above right handed serve from the deuce court aim any different on a kick serve if you are again going down the T? 🤔
Haha my aim on my kick serve isn’t great. All you noticed is my inability to hit my target. The aim is the same. But there are 1,000 reasons why I’m not Roger Federer and you noticed 1 of them. Thanks!!
I am a 4.0 club player. I started tennis in my 40's so I have a lot to learn. You have help tweaked my serves, backhand and helped improve my volleys greatly. I tell all my friends to support you. Seriously so helpful and easy to understand.
As a player and sometimes coach, with 55 years in the game, i can honestly say that no one explains things better than you do. I am a big fan of variety of strokes, to throw the opponent off, as well as to have more fun. It's just so fun to have lots of weapons and continue to add a new one every now and then, forever. I don't think anyone has ever explained the kicker better. Nice video. Now I'm going to challenge you to go outside the box. 1. Is there any rule against using a left-handed serve from the ad side, so as to have the "leftie advantage" in the ad court and preserve the "rightie advantage" from the deuce court by hitting a right-handed serve? I'm pretty sure there is no rule against it. Why doesn't anyone do it? 2. I'd like to see a video of serve variety, with as much unconventional serving as possible, underhand serve, et cetera. How about standing ALL the way over on the edge of the court to serve? How about simply hitting a killer forehand as a serve? There's no rule against bouncing the ball before the service motion, so who is to say where the service motion starts? Therefore, you should be able to drop the ball and kill a forehand as long as it hits in the square. Okay, even if you can't get away with letting it hit the ground and then hitting it, surely you can hit a forehand BEFORE it hits the ground. I'll bet that'd throw an opponent or two for a loop. 3. Okay, now for the kicker, so to speak. In volleyball, they hit a jump serve, by running from behind the baseline, jumping up BEFORE reaching the baseline, flying into the court, and THEN hitting the ball while being 4 or 5 feet inside the court, but still in the air. There's no rule I know of that makes this illegal in tennis. Why doesn't anyone do this? 4. I believe in the future all the best one-handed backhanders will return the serve with a two hander, or by hitting a forehand with either the left or the right hand depending on which side of their body the serve is coming to. If you stand with the racquet in from of you, with BOTH hands on the grip, you can return the serve with a forehand, either with the left or the right hand, no matter where the serve goes. This gives you MUCH more reach as well as power on the wide ones in either direction. Since covering the WIDTH of the service trajectory is the hardest part of returning at the higher levels, this should be a major advantage. Try it- you'll love it and you'll be the hottest video on the internet. If you are going to say that learning a left-handed forehand is hard, I can assure you that it took me a year to develop a killer one handed backhand after hitting two handers originally, copying Richard Gasquet's backhand, but it took more like one week to develop a killer leftie forehand. If I didn't love my one-handed backhand so much, I'd use it more. But I DO use the leftie forehand when stretched wide, or just when I feel like hitting it and let me tell you, it's a weapon! Balls that I'd never get to, and balls that I'd have to stab some low percentage or weak shot from, go back to the other side as KILLER shots, that I could never have otherwise hit. So how about a video about having more fun by adding more variety to your game using some of these and other shots?
@@2MinuteTennis Cool, that's really helpful. I was told you needed to stick with one grip for all types of serves. That's kind of silly since we switch grips for the type of groundstroke we want to hit.
Thx. Good video. But I’ve never had much luck hitting a kicker. How do you modify the stroke to hit the topspin serve you briefly demonstrated? Is it easier to hit than a kicker?
Your example presentation is really interesting. However, i find it might be better if you give what you do wrong on your unsuccessful try of those kick serves. With that, i can learn what to do and also what NOT to do.
Coach. Debating with a friend here.. does wrist create spin on a kick serve or pronation ? Does wrist have to do with anything on a good kick serve? Thanks.
Real world practice! 👍.I wonder which specific details are different between a serve that kicks to the right to one that do not kick, both having about the same forward high bounce. They look like identical to me when you hit them, but obviously they are not. Really subtle differences. Maybe you could do a super slow motion analysis/comparison for us. How does the speed of a kick serve affect its quality (height, side bounce)? What would be a minimum speed required to have a decent/acceptable kick serve for a 4.0 player?
This won't be great answer because of my lack of skill in the kick serve, M, but here are a few ideas that we see in the video. It's about the toss, strike and follow through - all of it. To get the kick, the too should be more over your head and perhaps even a bit to the left of it if you are RH. And it should be higher than usual so you can brush against it to apply the spin with your racquet on its way up (just as in a topspin groundstroke, your racquet goes from low to high and brushes the ball on the racquet's way up). The follow through is a bit tricky - go over that too in the video. One might say in a slice you brush the ball more on its right then follow through to the left. In flat serve you hit the ball more head on and follow through more straight ahead. In a kick, you brush the ball from low to high and a little bit from left to right, and the follow through sees the racquet sort of open up in the opp. dir. from what you'd expect if I remember correctly, so that its face is almost facing the sideline to your right. Perhaps watch the video again with all this in mind, regarding what I wrote as a rough approximation since I am not expert at this.

Yeah, I'm a lefty who will switch to a right hand if I don't think I can reach a regular shot. My coaches hate it, but it works!
Is it ok to slightly adjust the grip towards the backhand grip for a kick serve and then switch back to continental for the flat serve?
Absolutely. I do the same thing. Especially with me heelpad. Thanks!!!!
@@2MinuteTennis Cool, that's really helpful. I was told you needed to stick with one grip for all types of serves. That's kind of silly since we switch grips for the type of groundstroke we want to hit.
Monster kick on your slower version!
Got a question, what about pronation in this video I looked in a previous one and you turn your arm around at the end and not in this one? cheers
I get everything you are saying but how can i get consistent with a flat first serve ?
Thx. Good video. But I’ve never had much luck hitting a kicker. How do you modify the stroke to hit the topspin serve you briefly demonstrated? Is it easier to hit than a kicker?
Everything is the same except you’ll face a bit more forward on the topspin serve.
Thx. Will give it a try
Thanks for great tips. One comment though. I think you can turn your torso a bit more to the side/back. Looks to me you may be a bit too open
Thanks.
If you’re asking If the wrist curls up and over the ball no. Any feeling of that happening actually happens after contact.
@@2MinuteTennis so it's safe to say pronation causes the ball to spin and is much more effective at creating spin than wrist ? Thanks in advance!
@@mr.clutch987 correct. “Up and out to the right” (if right handed) is how you have to think of it. After contact strings face to the right.
@@2MinuteTennis thank you!
