  • Ryan from 2MinuteTennis.net shows you 5 tips to serve 100mph.

    1. Hold the racket with your heel pad slightly off

    2. Feel so loose that your arms are like cooked spaghetti

    3. Practice knocking off a birthday hat

    4. Begin your knee bend as you toss and explode the legs as you knock odd the birthday hat

    5. Tuck your tossing arm against your body as you hit the ball

    Excellent lesson. I’m a 4.0 and have always struggled with my serve it seems. Have had many pros look at it but no one has figured out the problem. My legs and upper body was always disjointed. But that little tip about extending legs as racquet is about to pass over my head was the key (for me at least). Just played with this in mind and I was bombing my serve. Thank you so much!

    All very Super-Essential, Super-Fundamental elements of the serve stroke! Very useful. The one MOST important tip that you did not discuss is ELBOW INTO THE BALL. I call it Elbow-To-Elbow: elbow from all the way "back" to Elbow-Into-t'he-Ball. That is the single trick that helped me to understand and actually implement the correct serve, along with Birthday Hat. Birthday Hat is part of this "Elbow-to-Elbow", or Elbow-into-the-Ball motion. In other words, to rephrase, the elbow goes as far UP into the sky as possible. It is very natural move, but it is very "strange", or "unusual" for beginners, Counter-Intuitive.

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 года назад

      You are correct. A drill I do with my students is I have them start with their elbow back, toss, and then bring their elbow forward snd have the ball drop onto their elbow. I’ll include it in an upcoming video. Thanks!!!

    Thanks helpful review of the serve for me with some added prompts re delay the bodies action as I do when I throw a ball. I can throw a ball along way just not able to fully transfer that power into the serve. I serve right handed and play all my other shots left handed so the feel in my right arm is not as good as my left. I am predominantly left handed and footed but throw much further right handed. Useful now as I get older as I can spread the wear and tear etc of practice and playing to both arms .

    Excellent points, Ryan! But I have to disagree about the function of the legs and, specifically, the so-called "leg drive." If you look at your video around 10:45 you will see your legs straighten as your non-dominant arm drops. The question is: what is the connection between that arm and the legs straightening? I agree with Florian Meier of Online Tennis Instruction who says that the strong dropping of the arm and the force of the forward swing propel the body upward. It is not the case that the server straightens the legs by applying force to them. Could you improve throwing a ball by jumping up with your legs as you go to throw it? I think the answer is no; doing this would even weaken the toss. I think this is the same phenomenon as hitting a powerful forehand where the body leaves the ground. It is the force of the forward swing that propels the body upward and not the player who is using his legs to jump upward.

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 года назад

      Hey thanks for the question George. The purpose of the leg drive on the serve is to stretch the shoulder back more during the racket drop. When you drive the legs while the racket is dropping it moves the body up as the racket is dropping. This means the racket drop becomes deeper and stretches the shoulder back more. That mimics a catapult being stretched farther back or like stretching a rubber band back farther than then flinging it across the room. When the racket comes around on edge toward the ball it’ll have more upward/forward speed and strike the ball with more force. It’s why the leg drive must be timed correctly. In summary, the more your shoulder lays back the more it stretches and snaps back (or in this case “forward”) and produces more racket speed. Make sense?

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 года назад

      As Vic Braden taught 40 years ago, leg drive accounts for about 6% of serve speed. That’s means if your serve is 100mph without any leg use you’ll be able to serve 106 with proper leg drive. That’s a big difference and makes it more difficult to return for the opponent.

    • @Fernwald84
      @Fernwald84 3 года назад

      @@2MinuteTennis Thanks for your reply, Ryan. I agree that increasing the shoulder stretch adds power to the serve (by lengthening the racquet head's path to the ball). But it seems to me that uncoiling the torso does that, in conjunction to dropping the arm--or more accurately, pulling the arm down and into the torso. This strong downward motion creates an opposite force, namely an upward springing of the body and straightening of the legs. Perhaps there is some intentional straightening of the legs as well, but it seems to me that if most of the upward motion of the body is due to intentionally strengthening the legs then we lose a lot of the energy from the torso's uncoiling and the strong downward pulling of the non-dominant hand.

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 года назад

      You’re right. They weren’t 100mph. I filmed this at 5:30am on a Saturday morning because my teaching Schedule is so full that I have almost no time to film. I didn’t have time to warm up my body/shoulder/arm. But if you follow what I taught you will be able to serve 100mph. I’m 42 years old, when I was 23 my fastest clocked serve was 117. Age and lack of playing time catches up and eventually you can’t serve as fast as you used to. My fastest serves now are 103mph.

    • @klepjax

      Lower back will hurt if you over rotate, too much hip. Try less hip.
      The correct unwinding sequence is from low to high: hip, shoulder, arm stretched, wrist snap.
      You can practice all four elements separately then put them together. If you are older and/or have hip or lower back pain, don't swing your hip around. Instead practice more open stance (abbreviated serve).
      A tennis coach in Utah showed me abbreviated serve, 80mph without trying. Very easy on the body.

    Not kidding. Not bragging. I served 120 back in the late 70’s. I used a head competition racquet that was my dad’s. While in a group lesson at Tam Tennis Club in the northern burbs of Chicago there was a young girl practicing with her coach on the next court. While we took a break Our coach (Bob Maramba sp?) was talking with her coach. I was shocked when he motioned for me to come over. He turned to the young girl and told her if she could consistently return my serve then she’d be able to handle any woman’s serve she faced. I spend the next half hour or so playing against her. I remember so clearly that It was like hitting against a wall. She returned everything I could give her. Her name was Andrea Yeager. That’s my tennis brush with greatness! True story. Another observation, Ryan’s service style looks EXACTLY like mine did. It’s like looking at a video of myself. I only wish I had some video of myself back in the day. Unfortunately, no one in my family was much of a photographer or videographer. Fun to watch!

    Forget all the.emphasis on the leg dip/ leg drive, etc. Most all of it happens naturally from a proper coil and uncoiling process. assuming you coil to the side and remain on balance - which is made easier mid you strike the ball to the right or left (depending on whether n you are left or right handed) and don't toss the ball too far forward or behind you.
    As you note, the coiling & uncoiling process on the serve is the same as on the FH - assuming you coil & uncoil the core. You are storing and releasing energy from coiling & uncoiling your core. And you can store more energy if you bend your knees a bit and rotate your hips a bit (while staying on balance), but not excessively so.
    You aren't in a jumping contest; you are just releasing energy from uncoiling the core and transferring it to your arm & racket head. Since you are exploding up to hit the ball above your shoulder you might come off the ground a bit, but it should be natural & not forced.
    Back when Poncho Gonzalez played you weren't allowed to jump into your serve. You had to have your toes/ foot still touching the court on contact, but Gonzalez & Lew Hoad & Arthur Ashe, etc. all had great serves and plenty of pop/ power & spin just from the basic coiling & uncoiling of their core. In fact, I'd argue those old school players had more fundamentally sound serves because they had to generate their power from the coiling/ uncoiling process rather than thinking that they were supposed to generate power by bending their knees & jumping up and into the court.

    i'm a beginner WITH a 100 mph Serve LOL will this vid get me to 130? (i just started playing 6 weeks ago) I entered an open tournament last weekend and it was funny as hell when people who have been playing 20 + years just got completely FROZEN by my forehand grip serves *when i got them in...around 35-40%) If i hit a spot by accident they don't even move and if the serve is close it's on them as they are trying to move.

    Ryan, you are great. In so many serve videos you are able to add some additional elements. Today the loose movement and the knee banding were great and are so important. In addition I like the imporance of the coiling at the beginning. It was wonderful that you compraed it with the start of a forehand. I think this is so important as it directs the ball throwing and everything else. I noticed that before the coiling you make yourself loose as well by doing small relaxing things. I like this. By the way I finally got 10 birthday caps today---my wife couldn´t believe it until I showed her your video(s)...:-), Oliver from Germany

      Hey thanks for the support. Two things: 1. Most pros would benefit from cooking more. 2. Amateurs usually have zero coil, so showing them this much coil gets them to at least coil a little bit. 👍

    • @internetanalytics618
      @internetanalytics618 3 года назад

      @@2MinuteTennis tennis is wonderful and what you say is awesome. The serve is hugely complicated as you know. I had a guy look at my serve. He added 10 to 15 mphs to my serve immediately by having me stay tighter in more core, come up over the top with less body rotation. and had me make sure i had that snap in my wrist when i contacted the ball. baseball pitchers push off the back leg and have less shoulder rotation for the most part. If I hold my weight down and the push up and over, rather that rotate my shoulders, that is when i get up to about 110. Not good enough for pros or d1 players but enough for my level. Cheers sir. you have much good to say and teach people. There is the push vs. pull discussion of serving. Those who push up tend to be players like serena and kleisters and most male players. the pu[[ers tend to be people like venus and sharapova. Barty pushes up off her back leg. play well everyone. !!!

Keeping the tossing arm tucked against my body has gotten me back to the pace, bite and kick of serve i want. TY!!!!!!!!!!! LOL I was opening my shoulders to soon again. Keeping the tossing arm tucked as long as possible has me going up after the ball again rather than rolling through the serve motion. well done sir!!

    Great video. Federer bends both of his legs in the air because he is balancing his whole body from leaning to left too much. At times, when one is exhausted from deep in the games the body gets tired. Therefore, the body flpps around when serving. Second reason of legs bent is the whole body stays fixed in the air so the arm can do the heavy swing like a pendulum.
