WOW!!!! I'm a 4.5 player. I've always had a great FLAT serve and a great SLICE server, but I've never been able to do a decent kick serve. And for the life of me, I could not figure out WHY. I took multiple lessons from very qualified instructors specifically to learn the kick serve, and STILL no go (though plenty of shoulder pain). I watched your video THREE times, and finally on the third pass I got it. It was when you said "so let me simplify this for you. When you do a slice...." and then you go on to explain what happens when you pivot your shoulders etc. to face the SIDE of the court and make the other adjustments you mention, THE SLICE BECOMES A KICK!!!!!! GENIUS!!!!!!!!!! I FINALLY get it. I was trying to do a kick serve from the same position as when I do a flat or slice, and the only result was a sore shoulder. No wonder!! Man, I cant't believe it took all these years and watching your video. You do SUCH a great job of really breaking the kick serve down, step by step. I hear you on the fundamentals too. Boy, what I would have given to see your video 20 years ago. I'd easily be a solid 5.0 player (or better) by now. THANK YOU!!! Going out to practice my new kick this afternoon :)
Nice! Glad you mentioned throwing the edge. That helps me on all serves. One thing that is maybe not a pro thing but helps me is… Since the fundamentals of a serve are the same you can mix the amount of ‘kick’ you use. For example instead of a 100% kick serve you can add a little bit of kick (spin) to a first serve for better safety. Sometimes 50-50, 75-25, etc. Just slightly adjusting can lead to lots of variations of amount of spin you want if that makes sense so your first serve has more safety, but still has a good amount of pace. A guess you could call it a 1/2 kick serve. Lol.
Gimme a top spin slice tutorial! I wonder i've I have been hitting that accidentally, thinking I've been hitting a kick serve all along. I'd love to see the difference from your perspectives!
Great video, brother. Serve is my natural shot I haven't needed to work as much on, but haven't developed my kick too much yet. This is informative, I think more 7-1 than 7:30-1:30 to get the higher bounce would be better for doubles to follow it in and get more time.
The most positive sum tennis channel, you guys share the e love, explain it like a friend who cares, and make sure your not the conspiracy friend, but the well read one 😅 thanks team RF!
This is a superb serve lesson. What you said about Rafter, with his combination of hips vs shoulder counter twist, and his forward toss into the court(30%) to produce such a wicked kick, I certainly did not know that. I think now that I am beginning to understand, Ben Sheldon does something similar. Not coincidentally I suppose, he seems to have the best kick serve out there right now.
Another very helpful breakdown and explanation of all the techniques involved. The most helpful for me and most definitely the rationale behind this is the position of the elbow/forearm of the non dominant arm at and after contact. It does make sense that it act as a counterbalance. Another benefit of this for me personally is it will minimise my trunk to open up more than it should. Thank you so much.
Question: I find sometimes when hitting the kick serve that I end up hitting the trailing edge of the frame and shanking it. What adjustments should I be making for this?
Freund hits an inside-out serve, which has to be hit with a forehand grip. I was self-taught as a kid and hit this type of serve in high school (not nearly at that pace, of course) in the late 80s. I wasn't a great player by any stretch of the imagination, but got a LOT of hate (and free points) for a weird motion and lefty spin from a righty player. Try to hit it now and it makes my shoulder hurt because it's a crazy unnatural motion.
Hey, I got a small question about the 5-day-challenge. I saw this too late 😂 Is it okay to join it if you're outside the US? I am living outside the US.

Can you also make fast kick serve? this serve you can use fpr 1st serve I can make 2nd kick serve but i have problems with 1st kick serve : i lose to much power and my serv ist to slow
@@RacquetFlex hi, thank you in advance for this. I have been playing tennis just for couple yrs and I find the serve very difficult. I think the serve it's "hard" enough without me worrying about were my toss is "going" 😉😉 PS. I really enjoyed your video on the slice serve...
How to do kick serve? There are these points and those points you must do, like all the pro have done, which are shown by demos. This is a collection of many important points/techniques you must do. Sorry, you get confused? just repeat those points, you will have a powerful kick serve. Even though the guy in this video did not show the true kick serve himself but just topspin serve.
Not specifically a kick serve issue but, something I discovered that I NEVER see anyone discuss is a mistake that 99% of all club players make. You have a strong leg drive, but all that energy is wasted because the timing is wrong. Players start the arm upward motion at the same time the start their leg drive, WRONG! Your racquet hand should stay still while your shoulder moves up, loading up the muscles and tendons in your arm like springs. Then start your arm motion when the leg drive is at least half complete. So, legs first, then arm. Watch slow motion of some top players and you'll see this, and when you try it yourself you'll find that free power that you've been missing. Thoughts?
This video, like most others, spends the least amount of time on the most important issue, racquet orientation at ball contact and how to achieve it. Everything else is detail. I've watched a dozen videos now and I still don't really know how to do this.
Agreed. This is a really tough one. I always think "work back from contact". First - "where do I want the ball to be when I hit it?" The racket head can be in only one position. Then I think "what do I want to do with my wrist?". Then "ok. So that tells me where my elbow needs to be" and so on. If you have the correct grip and you understand what you want your wrist to be doing at contact, then this means you can only have one shoulder position. Ok, so how do you get your shoulders into that position?
Although this may be true for some. It is not a good general representation of older players who understand the mechanics. If most of the work is being done from rotation, then the serve motion will incorporate the shoulder as a part of the kinetic chain. If not, the serve is definitely more shoulder-centric. It has more to do with what the athlete understands and executes vs. the age.
Haha I actually developed the pancake serve because I couldn't learn the kick-serve and wanted to be a smartass to my coach 😂
Well you proved him wrong.

7:25 That kick serve from Ben Shelton was crazy!
It's like hitting a dead spot😂There's no way to return it but standing way far back from the baseline
Medvedev could return it xD
Woah, I watched this entire video. I'll keep all of these pointers! Thanks sir (from Texas!) 🎉❤
Topspin slice serve, yes please! I believe I've been doing this one for years but I'd really like to know the mechanics to make sure!

Such great videos 🎉
Topspin slice serve video pls
Best tennis tutorials!
Did you say to toss more into the court to keep the ball in when swinging faster on a kick serve?

Holy moly that Ben Shelton Kickserve 😮
Question : How to make the kick serve with more forward momentum.. I end up just brushing and the ball has difficulty clearing the net.
Who has the best kick serve? Sam Stosur!
