    This made me remember the time my mother's house caught fire around 1960. I grabbed a pickaxe and broke into the side of the house and grabbed a garden hose and put out the fire. My friend who was visiting said my face went completely white (white with fright, as the saying goes). When the firefighters arrived they discovered a second fire at the opposite side of the house. They quickly extinguished it. Two things I learned from the event: 1.Act quickly because small fires are easier to extinguish but they become BIG fires quickly and 2. Never assume everything is okay until after you've made a thorough inspection.

    • @RobertLHargraveIII
      @RobertLHargraveIII  5 лет назад +1

      Wow! An incredible account of a real life event! Unreal! I didn't grab an axe, but I told my wife to call 911 and get the kids out. Ran into the garage grabbed a ladder, climbed onto the lower part of the roof above the patio and blasted the fire with a garden hose. The rest of the roof was too steep to get any closer. The fire went out briefly then smoke came out from the eves and dropped me. I soaked my shirt with the hose and covered my face a waited (seemed like forever) for a gust of wind to clear my path back to the ladder. Once it did I looked back up to the roof and saw 10+ft flames...insanity...the rest is history! Thank for sharing! All the best to you!!

      @@RobertLHargraveIII I think your situation was a lot more traumatic. Even though your home burned more than a year ago, looking back and reflecting . . . do you detect any depression several months afterward? I ask because, even though I'm a fairly upbeat person, I recently thought about the last day when I closed my business after 21 years, the equipment was gone, office furniture gone, the lights were out and I stood there reflecting. I remember that I felt strange but didn't realize that I was depressed too. But losing a home with your very personal possessions stresses and tests a person more than we'd ever wish. I've seen news and video reports of people who has suffered great losses in floods, storms, fires and have heard them say, "Those were only things. My family is safe."
      I hope building & establishing a new home fills you all with energy and excitement. Hope you have a very good year.

    • @RobertLHargraveIII
      @RobertLHargraveIII  5 лет назад +1

      @nemo227 We found ourselves in that same situation just things, etc, but there has been a bit of depression, anxiety, and other nonsense that has come about in the months/year after the fire. I am an extremely positive person as well and actually had comments from people saying, "don't take this the wrong way, but something like this could have happened to a better person...you guys have become really good at taking punches." My reaction was, "man maybe, but I'm really tired of getting punched!!" I didn't suffer any real depression from the fire, but did develop slightly high blood pressure due to anxiety and stress. Being a really active person (running, cycling, etc) and having a healthy diet...it has taken more than a year to get my blood pressure to finally stabilize. Our 5 year old son still has outbursts of anger and does play therapy to help him cope; he gets better daily. I really appreciate the comments and well wishes! I hope the same for you! Take Care!

    This video was five years ago (as of 2023) and your later content never mentioned your decision... After the demolition, did you have a new house rebuilt and moved back there? Or did you let it go (in other words, you sold the property) and moved on? I am assuming there is a new house in that spot today, regardless if you are living there or not.

    So sorry for the loss of your house. My parents and I moved house 12 years ago. While we're happy where we live now (though my dad's dead now), it saddens me a bit knowing our old estate is slowly being demolished and they'll eventually knock our old house down. True, it's all looking rather grotty now as it was built way back in the late 60s. And despite all the murders, muggings, druggies, drunks, vandalism and people mouthing off that went on there, it was still the place where I grew up.

    As a paving contractor We demo roughly 10-12 house a year as fill in work, it’s crazy how much easier it it to take down a newer home than it is a 80 year old house, I’ll peal apart an 80+ year old home and the wood still looks brand new. Went thru Harvey and lost home again...waited for approval from a grant program. Just got approved last week for reconstruction. Demolition starts in 2 weeks. Dad passed away while waiting on this approval in July 2019 due to existing health problems. Bittersweet. So much memories on this property.

      @RobertLHargraveIII  5 лет назад

      @Jeremy Mrozek our insurance company said in order to get paid for the slab we had to do a careful tear down...cost $16k (which they paid for) the slab was valued at around $25k that they would have paid if deemed un-buildable. We had expert engineers do a $1k report that ended up showing the slab was "fine." But like your situation no one will guarantee to build on it. We had a 3rd party adjuster that helped out tons Brown O'haver. They were the best and deal with situations like ours all to regularly. You might look into them! Unfortunately our outcome left us with a slab that still has to be demoed at +/- $2500 and it is what it is. Hope this helps. Pardon the lateness of this reply! All the best!

    • @jeremymrozek9021
      @jeremymrozek9021 5 лет назад

      @@RobertLHargraveIII Robert..my situation was resolved between me and the insurance company, they now agreed that they will replace the complete house, including foundation and basement slab (which is what we wanted) The turning point was code requirements that would need to be done to reuse the existing foundation. All foundation walls would need reinforced with rebar and cement, exterior water issues and insulation would also be required.....this is also part of trying to save the foundation during demolition which you know and I know is very hard to do if not impossible on a brick home.....but currently we are on to the next step of demolition and then to start the rebuild of a new home.....

    Houses are too close together. Neighbors are lucky to still have their houses. Oh, and you forgot your guitar.

      Yeah houses in our old neighborhood were way too close!! We bought a new house on 1.9 acre!!! Way more space!! That guitar was trashed/crazy warpes by all of the chemicals and water the fire dept dumped on it. RIP guitar!!! Haha. Thanks for the view and comment! Cheers!

      And I now see why insurance companies give better rates on brick houses. The outer walls didn’t burn and contain the fire better from spreading to the neighboring houses.

    It’s crazy what the value of a house is once it’s place in a dumpster. Cha-Ching thanks insurance company.

      @Stephen Scharback We were very fortunate that we bought the house "right" as a foreclosure so the payment for the house was on point, but the bad news was that we went over the policy limits for the contents portion...way over!! It's crazy how much stuff you can accumulate over close to a decade...especially when you've got a gazillion kids and like nice electronics..haha! All the Best!

    • @RobertLHargraveIII
      @RobertLHargraveIII  4 года назад +1

      Man Ryan it was hard to tell. There was a ton of heat stress cause on the fire that actually made the slab structurally unsound to build on...no telling what or if the bricks were damaged as well. Cheers!

    This thing is unwatchable. You are all over the place. Some one should have taken care of that home. What a beautiful home that most people will never have a chance to own. Now it's a disaster

      You ought to read their reply to others, too much damage to rebuild, easier and cheaper to tear down than gut, remediation and rebuild/remodel.

    Out here in Texas and Oklahoma it’s crazy how when a house catches fire they demolish it without fixing it. Back in NY where I used to live when a house caught fire they would spend almost a year fixing it up so it looks Brand new. I guess the demolish the houses to save money.

      Logan06 when our house burned down there was too much water, smoke and fire damage. We were hoping to be able to repair the house, but with that much damage our home owners insurance company said we had to demolish it. Like you said cheaper to rebuild than repair. We hope to sell the lot soon to let someone else build their perfect home!

    • @MK7Logan
      @MK7Logan 6 лет назад

      Robert L. Hargrave III that sounds like a good plan. When you guys sell the lot do you get the money for it?

    • @RobertLHargraveIII
      @RobertLHargraveIII  6 лет назад

      Logan06 yes sir! We will prob sa bly just put the extra funds in the bank or invest it. Something super lame like that haha!

      It depends on how badly damaged the house is if it's worth repairing sometimes the structural side of things and the interior etc isnt safe to live in

      williefisterbottom S we were able to save anything that wasnt destroyed by smoke, water and acid (from the firemen) or black mold. We tried to salvage any we could! Which unfortunately was not a lot.

      Haha!! Not yet! We did get a letter in the mail telling us we needed 2 trees in the front yard, ha... HOAs are such a pain. The house we bought in DFW has no HOA which is extremely rare for the area....a dream come true!

      Dang Michael, that SUCKS!! I hope you have recovered from the stress your tragedy might have caused you and were able to move past it. It was tough for my kids. 3 years later they all come running into the our bedroom if they hear thunder at night. Time helps a little...we can just take it one day at a time. Best!
