- This is the Schaefer building in Marine, IL being torn down on April 25, 2016. The building was believed to be built in 1851 by a man named Jerome Carlton. In this building, he ran a shoe and boot making business. In 1854 the Blanke & Bros. General Store was in operation in the south half of the building. Sometime in the late 1800s a small brick addition was added to the south end of the building, and was used as a post office for the town until it later out grew this location. In 1871 L. A. Richardson had his drugstore business there along with Dr. Fisher's office. In 1878 Henry Gehrs opened a general mercantile business in the north half of the building. Eventually Mr. Gehrs' sons Otto and Oscar took over their fathers business and the bottom half of the building. In 1905 it was purchased and operated by Lewis Kolb, and later by his son Leo. In 1940, it was sold to Raymond and Rosalie Schaefer(and daughters Grace and Ramona) who opened the Schaefer Mercantile Co. In 1941, it became Schaefer's Clover Farm Store until it closed. After the death of Raymond Schaefer his daughter Grace operated the business until January 1988. Later, the building was used briefly as a pizza restaurant, and then sat unused for a few years before it was torn down.

The house I'm living in was slated for demolition so a city street could be widened. My late wife found out so we looked at the house and bought it. Moved it thirty miles away and had it restored and upgraded. Everybody that sees it comments on how beautiful it looks. Best money we ever spent, especially considering that the house is close to seventy years old!
It takes a special person like you to preserve history . My house is 160 and it too was slated for demolition. It was bought by another person before me who saw it as a fixer upper and flipped it for a price . I bought it and restored the restoration with old wood trim back to the 1860. How Long will it last after I leave it . Not long Im sure .

They're probably going to put something important there, like a 7-11....
@Damnit Bobby YEP! That's about all it took!
Ha look at how easy to falls apart
With the ground slowly shifting and exposure to nature, the mortar will start to crack and bricks will come loose.

Some jobs just shouldn’t go to the lowest bidders 🙈
It hurts to watch this because I love buildings like this that have a long history. It's just sad to see it go.
Now that company did this right they made shire that side of the street was closed fore the demolishing of the old building.
If people really cared about it, they would have formed a trust to restore it. I used to hate to see historic buildings torn down but over time I just watch them continue to deteriorate and become dangerous. Maybe now the lot can be used for something useful. Its up to locals to save buildings like this. If you really dont care, then dont be surprised when you come to town one day and see this happening.
I Don't Care and we need more PARKING!
Just because something is old doesn't mean it's historical. It looked like it was unsafe to have people in it, much less restoring. Maybe the owner wanted to do something more practical with the plot of land; who can say.
Absolutely!
@@Pantherman63 i can say. He shouldn't have knocked it down. If he needs to f-ing excavators and all that time it wasn't so weak. I gave tried to save historical structures. One that was an official heritage sight. Most people are just shit and don't care.
The most absurd thing that will happen afterwards they will replace it with a cheap, ugly looking box, something that would collapse in the coming decades. That is what we call environment friendly.

Just because it's old and historical doesn't mean it's safe. If it stood up any longer it would've fallen dow next time the wind blew.
Old houses only get like that through decades of neglect. If you take care of them and maintain them properly, they're going to last longer than any new house.
Kinda sad lots of history with old houses
A real shame tearing a historic building down that has stood the testof time, too many today have no respect for history or historic buildings

Sickening to see something this old being demolished. They could've easily preserved this building and used it as a museum or something. City and town governments need to start realizing that it's important to preserve old, historical structures rather than demolish them. It's as though the powers-that-be want everything in this country to be brand new and to forget our history.
City and town governments don't see anything except money & potential for money. There is no money in history or it's preservation, just costs.
Great! I like McDonald's.
167 year old building torn down to make room for a modern structure estimated to last 50 years max. Where did sanity go? Hell the equipment they are using to tear it down only has a quarter of the lifespan of their predecessors because the modern technology in their construction forces their early end.
I agree it's sad, the newer generations do not care about the past or their own family history. I can understand if the building had major structural damage that would not be worth fixing but so many buildings are torn down in the name of progress. I live in Appleton Wisconsin and their is a historical home called the Hearthstone Museum built in 1883, it was the first house in the world to be powered by Hydro-electricity. The city wanted to buy it and demolish it but the local community saved it and got it on the national register of historic places. If you get the chance look it up and look at the photos, it would have been a crime to demolish it, so much artistry and beauty.
And America wonders why they have no heritage!!!
In Australia prior to demolition usually the roof gets removed first by hand.
Soviet Onion 72 Look at the safety procedure not even the safety fence around the bricks are falling on the road.
Soviet Onion 72 Lmao youre talking to muricans, they don‘t even use other attachments that the normal bucket.
@@peon9282 It gets the job done lol
The lime mortar was dead, which is why it fell apart as he tickled it. The roof, sidings, facia, guttering and most of the windows were not original and not worth saving. He pulled out the truss support of the roof which caused the roof to sag onto the walls bit by bit eventually causing the collapse. The safest ( and traditional) way to knock it would have been from the street as its strength was in the gables and the corners but permissions may not have been granted. Anyway I would have taken it down by hand and salvaged every single brick.
WE bith know there was some BEAUTIFUL timbers in that building!
Thanks to the lime mortar, it means the bricks could have been salvaged, because it doesn't fuse them together like cement does
I would love to see somebody run up and say' hey that's the wrong house, its

I agree, it would have been a very beautiful building had it been restored! Unfortunately, they said that the brick was soft and crumbling in places. Now I know why there are barely any old buildings in the US.
In Germany, such buildings would not be allowed to be torn down. They have to be renovated and restored instead.
The American attitude to history puzzles me. You have so little that is really old, yet you seem happy to tear down what might have been the oldest property in the town. In the UK most buildings erected before 1840 are automatically preserved by national legislation, and although this house wasn't quite that old I can;t believe that no alternative use could be found. Same language but such different culture......

"Living"? No one has had any practical use for it for years. There is apparently nothing in it or about it in the way of historical interest that can't be preserved in such a record as is set out in the description of the video. It would be a shame to continue having it deteriorate, be an attractive nuisance to homeless and addicts, and be in the way of something more productive. It is dead; don't let it rot above ground.

I need to ask you if a new building was built where the old building was?
No safety fence around and it’s on the edge of the road unbelievable .
Every time i see this video, my heart cry!!!! What is on the site now??
It's just (litterally) a pile of old bricks; no structural integrety... the mortar is all shot - see if you can find 2 bricks still joined together.
It sounded so crispy, just barely standing on its on
Ironically, mortar is actually meant to be softer than the brick. If it's not, it actually causes more problems than if it were harder and actually fused the bricks together
@@wyster14 That may be so, but mortar degrades in time. It's always wise to check it each couple of decades. Especially, if the original mortar was below specs.
@@33lex55 usually patching can help, but it's better to more thoroughly replace the mortar with similar material
@@wyster14 Yup, it's called renovation.
Why are they tearing it down in slow motion???
To prevent damage to the single story building next door .
They should demo that hideous blue tower in the back and keep the older building so it could get to be old!
should of been using a water hose to control the dust
Nice asbestos safety protection they use👌👍
Asbestos was not used in construction until about the 1930's. They will have inspected the building for asbestos in case any had been used in more recent restoration. So there was no asbestos in this particular place.
NO Water for dust control... Just let the Dust fly. What a terrible demolition company!
Aux Etats Unis une maison de cet âge aurait du être gardé intact. Tous leur bâtiments fait avec des allumettes aujourd'hui ne vieilliraient pas comme cette maison.
That Hy-Lift forklift sure seems to be helping!
Just for the record I don't know what company is doing this but it doesn't matter because the company bids for the job 1 price whether it takes 5 hours or 5 days so they are not gaining anything by "milking" it.. Tearing down a multi story building that is already unstable and in a neighborhood requires careful work..
*with that said they really should be spraying this down with water while they are working
It should have been marked as a historic site instead of taking it down

My 100y old house can stand 100 more, but still, if i had the money, i would demolish it. Why?
