Does the JK-BMS need two cables to cell no. 8? It's the last Gobelpower upgrade...

  • I'm going to upgrade the Gobelpower SR1 battery from the original Pace BMS with Heltec 4A smart balancer to the JK Inverter BMS. All three Gobelpower batteries then have the JK BMS built-in.
    This will be the base for the next series of tests I want to make with several of the JK Inverter BMS connected, communicating and working together.
    So, swapping the Pace for a JK BMS is pretty straight forward as most of the components fit and only the actual BMS needs to be swapped out.
    Well, that was the case with the 100A BMS we did a while back, but is very different here, so some serious DIY action is needed.
    I also test if the second balance cable from the BMS to cell no 8 is necessary for the JK BMS to work. Some of you have asked what the deal with that 2nd cable is...

    Hello, I am a sales of JIKONG JKBMS. Regarding why there are 2 B2 pin , it is because in the early stage we needed to interface with the product of another equipment manufacturer, so we designed 2 B8. Their functions are the same. In the later stage, we will improve so that there will be only one B2 Pin, if any friend have problem about BMS , you can connect me……

    I think the reason for the two balance cables attached either side of the fuse is due to the voltage drop over the fuse when drawing larger currents.. The voltage drop will be greater over the fuse than the normal busbars joining the other cells together and therefore the BMS would see a different cell voltage on either cell 8 or 9 (cell voltage plus fuse voltage drop) and that may cause balancing issues or make the cell deviation look worse than it really was.

We also went with the JK BMS and got two B2A24S20P because I am going to use 17 or 18 cells since my inverters can handle up to 64vdc input and should run cooler using higher voltage and lower amps.. @andy I am not so happy with the inverter JK in multi device mode. I hope you’re going to run the inverter bms in multi device mode soon to check all functions
    E.g. if you use Victron homeassistant and the JK submits data to home assistant you only see the master values of the cells. I tested it with a new pack and reported cell voltage min and max was only master values.
    At least with victron protocol, maybe it works with pylontech…
    I would like to see ALL cells in homeassistant

    • @OffGridGarageAustralia
      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Месяц назад +1

      Yes, I will thoroughly test all this.
      But, yeah, that is expected. The master reports only the collated data to the Victron/inverter and you won't have access to all the single cell voltages.
      I have another solution for that though and will show it in the next video.

    Hopefully they all talk on the network consistently. I have 2 x V14 and 1 x V15 they talk and play nice but every day one of the v14's (the slave unit as the other is master)drops off the network and this causes the DVCC to drop the amount of charge. So yesterday in WA we had a cloudy start when the sun poked through, the JK decided it was going to take a break. So My system was freq trimming my two Fronius AC solar controllers. Even though the Vic MPPT was set to ignore the BMS, it was charging at full rate, and the DVCC just cut back the AC solar to compensate. This has been with JK for nearly 6 weeks now, although I did bring it to their attention a long time ago. I have focused on it now as its the winter months and every solar ray counts. One of the V14 will loose coms for several hours then just come good again. Its not the Coms Board as the V15 is No3 and it doesn't drop coms. If it wasn't for VRM Id probably never have known. I trend the Charge rate to find out.

    Andy i am now confused about the wires on cell 8 as i had a different experience.
    Some weeks ago i upgraded 3 batteries from pace to JK just as you did in an earlier video and used the existing cables, all worked fine.
    This weekend i have just completed a diy eel stand up case and adapted it to take a JK inverter bms. I had found a wiring diagram from jk which only showed one balance cable on cell 8 positive and a cable on cell 9 positive, despite the supplied cables having an extra cable?
    When i started it up, the cell voltages on 8 and 9 were blank in the app. If i connected the spare (supposingly not required) cable to cell 9 negative, all cell voltages worked in the app. The system works well, balances etc. So dont really understand why that extra cable is there, but it is obviously needed.

If I do so on my 150A Inverter-BMS v15, all LEDs light up as long as I press the button and everything is off if I release it. So I have to press several seconds and sometimes I need some tries till it stays really 'on'. Is that a fault or a feature?

Any thoughts ? I spoke to a friend of mine and he kindly took his battery partly apart and had the same findings.

      It is simple: you follow the instructions to cable this BMS. It needs the last balance cable (B16 in the manual) to be connected to battery positive as well as the ticker positive cable (which is necessary for the current limiter).
      The BMS won't turn on without that cable and MOSFETs are off, hence you messaure that 51V across the battery and BMS.

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Thanks Andy...It was a head scratcher as I'd followed everything to the letter up to the point of connecting that last wire....I was double,triple and quadruple second guessing myself but good to know i had it correct. Appreciate everything you do for this community, many thanks. I should mention that it was Garry from Garry's Half baked that helped me with testing his. He did me an absolute solid.

    Instead of 3d printing a part why not use the 4.3" display. Use grinder to make opening 192mm x 94mm (around buttons and existing opening) then take screen apart ... take off the rubber gasket ... remove the top half of the flange on that front plate... then reassemble the two parts but sandwiching the box front plate. I've used this on 5 of my XR-04 boxes and they work perfect. Any overcuts will be hidden by the front part of screen.

      A grinder is far to aggressiv and will destroy the paint around the cut. At least my grinder does... I would need a milling router or so get the right cut in this material. The Seplos boxes have very thick steel.

      @rogereldridge8233 Месяц назад

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia I used a grinder .. any imperfections are concealed by the front plate of the display anyhow, to reduce imperfections I put painters tape over the area and drew lines on the tape so sparks would not damage surrounding paint. My XR-04 boxes were fairly thick steel too. When done it looks like it was meant to be there. Just a thought.. but must be more fun making 3d parts ?

      @@rogereldridge8233 I can give it a try with the Seplos front panel. It's fairly thick steel and I have to get a thin cutting wheel for my grinder. Masking tape to protect from the sparks👍👍

      Are you sure the hole should be 192 x 94 mm?
      According to the manufacturer, the LCD display has mounting dimensions of 129 x 86.9 mm.

    Thank you for your videos, good work, very helpful.
    I bought on Ali 3 JBD BMS (JBD-UP16S010-L16S-200A-B-R-C) for 48V batt's with 315Ah cells. BMS are working, but not really good. I'm at a loss what to do. The JBD seller response is very poor. I've reported many problems , but have'nt received a usable response to date. Is there still hope for improvement with JBD (firmware). Or do you know anyone who knows this BMS well and can help me, or should I throw the JBD BMS into scrap and buy 3x JK-PB2A16S20P-3.2LCD?

    Hi mate, this is weird. Mine definitely needs both the number 8s as shown in my videos.
    With only one cell 8 lead connected I had no voltage shown for cell numbers 8&9 with both connected I show voltage on cells 8&9
    Version 15 and it was the last lead on the second plug for cell 8

      @OffGridGarageAustralia  Месяц назад

      That is indeed weird. I have the V14.xx here but don't think they have changed anything like this and all of the sudden the V15 needs both cables. I've got this running for a few days now and have no trouble.
      I'll do some testing with the V15...

    Is the cell is good to use?
    Can I seal it by pouring soldering aluminum in the hole?

    12:48 Stop right there Andy...this is another concern... the first cable on pin 1 goes where on the JK BMS ??? The second cable goes to cell #1. On the video here you do not have a cable there at all. Does that first cable get connected to ground side??? Very confusing

      You can see it right in the video. Cable one is the white one and goes to battery negative.

    Not quite relevant to this video. I was watching one of your other videos and saw you are using a two pole breaker to disconnect your solar. Can you share the breaker type and mfg you used? What DC voltage and amp rating did you pick and why? And why this approach instead of one of the solar panel rotary disconnect switches? Thanks in advance.

    Andy - you notty boy - remember you are showing your loyal fans how to do stuff - so dont forget safety first. You removed the existing cell monitor wiring WITHOUT labeling the wires with a cell number (also number the cells). So many wires 16+, so easy to get wires crossed over. If you get it wrong, you may toast your BMS (over volts or reverse volts may destroy the cell measuring circuits). As good practice, you should always label your wiring before dismantling - so very easy to get reassembly wrong. SUCK IT AND SEE is bad practice. Just imagine you are assembling a time bomb on your bench - ALWAYS BE VERY CAREFUL - DOUBLE CHECK THEN CHECK AGAIN.

    Gobbledygook power... :-) Andy I really do not understand why you are giving air time to this company. Horrible cases and they are using you to fix all their issues? I do not know, maybe you have some kind of deal with them. Anyway, if I was a manufacturer and I had sent battery boxes like these for review, ashamed would be the least I would feel.

    •  Месяц назад

      I bought cells from them and ordered an odd number of cells so box 9 should have had just 2 cells.. Well only 8 full boxes arrived so I had to contact them and their response was that they only sell by the full 4 cell box forcing me to have to order 2 more cells.. So after a couple weeks I am still waiting on the box of 4 cells with no idea when they will arrive because they don't send you tracking information.. Nowhere on their website do they state that they have to be ordered in lots of 4 and when asked about this they were unclear at best.. I told them they should put this on their website or at least make it so you have to order in groups of 4 cells and they seemed unconcerned.. Not sure if I will ever order from them again, the only other option is direct from China or very high prices but ordering direct requires you to have a US Customs account and $2,500 bond through a bonding agent which also charges a fee..

      @@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes I get it, but I do not understand how a company that respects itself sends for review a completely unusable product. Its not like negative advertisement. I don't think that anyone including myself will ever consider anything from them after that.
