First step in transforming the Off-Grid Garage into...? Success with my sketchy welding skills.

  • I started the garage transformation today! First job was to weld this metal beam under the roof structure. Seems to be an easy job and should not take long. Well, the welder constantly overheats and leaves me with 20min breaks to cool down... not great!
I also have to find a solution for the roller door support which needs to connect back to the ceiling. I've got an idea already...
What do you think this all is for?

As you own an angle grinder you could have easily prepped the area to be welded, nice shiny steel makes for much easier welding. Not to mention the fumes that zinc plating/galvanising gives off. It would have also been pretty easy to make some brackets to bolt the beam up, but would of taken longer of course. Perhaps you're hanging a curtain, or building a wall to make a cold air conditioned corner.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia they’re more worried about your brain and not the welds. Inhaling zinc is hazardous to your nervous system. Ventilation and a respirator are necessary. I’m not a welder but my cousin was in the trades for three decades and hated galvanized work.

If you're making an overhead gantry crane, you might want to build a strap and go under the main beam, and bolt it to top truss. Welds are good and all, but those welds in the center will be taking the full load. And a bolted connection would be much safer. But if you're not making a crane ... never mind. I was a machinist in another life and built many a crane for loading parts on large 6 & 8 spindle gantry mills. 👍

Andy I hope there is no white fluffy stuff near your welds - galvanized steel is notorious for giving off zinc oxide which is very toxic if breathed in - I have a young buddy who put himself in hospital welding a galvanized bike stand - he was in an oxygen tent for a few days it gave us quite a scare

    • @paulbarrette2557

When welding galvanized steel, the zinc coating easily vaporises. This will form zinc oxide fumes that will mix with the air. This gas may give short-term effects to your health which is also known as “metal fume fever”. Welders may experience flu-like symptoms once they inhale the fumes. These may include nausea, headaches, high fever, shivers and thirst. The symptoms will usually go away within 48 hours of exposure.

What are you actually trying to do?
Why do you want to put that tiny little pipe along the ridge beam? I guess for unloading batteries from the ute with a roller winch.
But I wouldn't lift >100kgs on it. The strength or any cross beam is only as much as its end supports, and given that your roof and ridge and rafter truss structure has NO VERTICAL SUPPORTS at its ends or in the middle, over time your roof will slump if you lift too much. Those sheds are designed to support ONLY the aluminium roof sheets, not even the solar panels you already have up there. So be careful not to overload it.
A simple test would be to make a measuring stick from floor to roof ridge and see what slump it has when you lift various loads.

    Hi Andy,
I am concerned for your health the way you are doing your welding! You need to always wear long sleeve clothing, and protect your neck from the intense and damaging UV that is generated by the welding arc!
I imagine you had a pretty bad "sunburn" from the welding you did on your arms and neck. This is a major cause of skin cancer for those who weld without the proper protection. It's no joke.
Also, welding galvanized materials produces toxic fumes that require a respirator that is intended to protect you from those fumes.
Please take better care of your health when welding, and be a good example to your subscribers....
    Cheers from Oregon, USA,
    Philip

If you install a 12v power supply that connects directly to the power lead it won't shut off when the welder get's too hot. I'd attach it right onto the output of the power switch and neutral. That way it turns off when you hit the mai9n switch.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia So you are finally building yourself a prison cell out of heavy steel?? Why not just galvanized steel sheet metal studs for top plate, bottom plate and walls?? Or are you planning on a heavy rollup doorway?? Me I am lazy and would have just put up a curtain rod and a heavy curtain to separate the delivery bay from the work area.. But I suppose Australia's climate is like Florida, hot - muggy and buggy..

You will see... It will be a proper wall.
Luckily, we don't get these muggy days very often but rather have a dry heat which is much easier to cope with.
