When I was a young teenage guitarist in the 1980's it was all Eddie all the time. It was like no other guitar players existed. Me and my buddies ate, dreamed, and lived Van Halen. We spent our days trying to cop Van Halen licks and songs. We worked odd jobs to buy Kramer guitars and Marshalls. He was literally a guitar god to us. With every record that VH released, we would stand in line at the record shop for hours to ensure we got a copy. The records were still vinyl although they had 8 track and cassettes came out shortly afterwards. However, we wanted the vinyl records so we could stare at the pictures and make cassette copies of the songs. We would literally wear out the cassettes copping EVH licks.
I had an old Silverstone tube amp when I was a kid that I used to play on ten and realized I was getting an interesting sound. When I was 16 I saved up for my first Marshall and I was in heaven and I still use Marshall amps to this day.

200 watt Marshall Major.. That was the Ritchie Blackmore amp. I stood 12 feet away from Blackmore in Rainbow in a smallish venue playing a pair. I tried plugging my ears and it didn't help. I was half deaf for days in 1980.
I know and I hear you. After seeing Blackmore with Purple, my ears rung for weeks.

As Tris Mahaffay mentioned early in discussion, "back vocals" were indeed a major ear catcher. Besides Eddie's game changing unearthly guitar work on the '78 VH debut LP. What was more profound. Center stage at two of those stellar '78 concerts, during their debut tour. The 2nd go around as opener for Black Sabbath. After they left the stage (in ashes), all of us up front felt kind of bad for Sabbath. When Eddie came full on into the scene...decided to focus on originality more than ever. Alan Holdsworth, John Coltrane, John Goodsall, John Abercrombie, Ravi Shankar, were main influences during early part of career. Btw, recall viewing a few of those Fender Bandmaster heads, stacked with Marshalls on Eddie's side of stage when they opened for Sabbath.

Chris Gill said that there were guys behind the stacks who would make sure they wouldn't fall when Eddie would jump up on them. He didn't go into detail but I sure would like to know the details because it seems as though they would have to be standing up high on something a ladder or scaffolding to be able to reach them. This was wonderful! It was a lot about gear and amps for me a non-guitar player, but boy, the stories Tris told are amazing! I didn't know it got cold at the US festival! I can't imagine being sunburned from hell and then needing to build a fire! And, poo on taking out the word on the card! lol. I wanted to know what it said. Tris is a wealth of knowlege and I look forward to the next episode with his friend talking about the Bandmaster amp...or do I? 🤣🤣🤣jk I do! Thanks guys for a great interview!

You don’t have to be tall to do that. He did that only in 1982. Hendrix sort’ve did the same thing…he just had one guy behind the stack holding it. The cabinets that Eddie “springboarded” off of likely had no speakers and were lightweight. No big deal.
Eddie spoke of exactly how he used the at least two Bandmaster heads that he had. He had the ‘63 blonde Bandmaster head that he typically used at home and a late 60s silverface Bandmaster head that he used live in smaller venues that the Marshall was too loud for.
There is no evidence that Eddie ever re-amped or used a load box to essentially turn one head into a distortion pedal before the Marshall as many have theorized. Eyewitness accounts from Donn and Doug Messenger and Edward himself and the photo from the “Jamie’s Cryin’” session give evidence that there was no re-amping/slaving or using of multiple amps in the studio. Again…there is no evidence of any other amp besides the #1 Marshall being used in the studio between 1977-1988 and interviews with Rudy and Edward say that there was no re-amping live between 1977-1989.

I did the slave thing.....Marshall 18 watt plexi ......into a 100w Webber Attenuator line out into a 20 watt tube amp.....line out to a 412 cab.

I was at both Oakland '81 shows (3rd ish center stage 1st nite/front of Ed's mic smashed into the stage 2rd nite) and have some COOL stuff to tell you about what happened after the show! I was there on the first night. I had seen them on the 79, 80, 81, 82 and 84 tours, but that fair warning tour was unmatched. Best concert of my life.

At one point AL says Donn Landee didn't have a bass mic on for "I'm The One"
It was an intricate bass part he was doing but the mic was off and Donn Landee said he was sorry. (the drums are already awesome, hard to think they could have been better)
AL said that he ended up sounding like a 'Mongie'.....lol (Mongoloid I guess)
It was recorded just 13 days before Eddie and Sammy did farm aid in 85.
Didn't Pete Townsend just say he picked up a Jackson for the first time and felt he could play 3 times faster....

There’s no evidence of slaving on any classic Van Halen album or live tour between 1977-1988. The raw mic tracks prove that the sound coming out of Edward’s cabinet is that of a rather unremarkable straight plexi sound. The EQ and compression added in with the live chamber sound on the first album and later on EMT plate reverb is what gives that impression of more distortion or the “bloom” that Martin speaks of. Listen to the raw mic tracks…that’s all you need to know about what was going on with Edward’s sound from 1977-1984.
Yup that room mic audio from Sunset Sound reveals the truth. It was the Marshall and his hands. Sure it got polished up for the final release but that raw mic sounds even better to me than what’s on the album.

A 50watt through the load box into the 100watt. Don Landee is the man behind the sound of Eddie’s tone using one amp on VH 1

And neither did anyone in or around the band. In fact, Eddie is the man behind the sound of Eddie's tone using one amp on the first 8 albums. In 1986 a speaker emulator and a load box began to be used for the stage monitoring, but Edward’s sound STILL came from only one amp and one cabinet for live shows through 1989. By 1990, things did change considerably with wet-dry-wet setups and more complicated signal paths. But make no mistake…there is no evidence of re-amping/slaving ever in the studio from 1977-1989.

Yeah the scropscwhere great Kirk was a disappointment because you couldn't really hear him at that show, Van Hagar sounded great Dokken we're good Lynch was really tall, was dosed so I didn't get tired.
