Just for the record (as Tom’s older brother) I met Ed in the 6th grade (Jefferson Elementary) I saw this new kid (Ed) playing Wipe Out with his hands on the lunch benches. I said who is this dude? Later that day I saw the same kid folding his newspapers as we got ready to do our paper routes. That’s how I met Ed. 👍
In early 1979 van Halen was rehearsing in Anaheim CA ( near the avio dutch club on katella ave in Anaheim CA). I lived in the town over the 57 frwy- bridge ( placentia CA). I was riding my skateboard down that bridge when I heard drums, I followed the sound to the end of the bridge to some warehouse they were rehearsing in. As I peeked in , Eddie was walking up to the door. He asked if I wanted to come in to watch. I was lucky enough to be able to come back for a few more days while they were there. This is right before van Halen 2.
That 26" bass drum that Tom speaks of has to be for the Ludwig silver sparkle kit Alex got in 1970. That kit should be displayed in the U.S.A. .....it's a National Treasure. He bought that kit in 1970 and used it all through the club days up until the VH 2 tour in 1979. But the kit is in a Hard Rock in Europe somewhere.....it needs to be here.......at home.
Pasadena civic show could/ should have been released. I taped it off the radio in 1982( Wccc)still have the cassette. Unbelievable performance, I wore that out
Thanks for sharing Jeff! I enjoyed hearing things that I grew up reading about. Tom sounds like a guy you'd love to sit and just chill with over a cold one.
I've been to their house on Las Lunas a handful of times. Once I peeked in! (Really not something one should do!) Tiny little place. I drove around to the back alley and saw the backyard and separate garage. It was chain link fence but now they've put up a actual fence. If Ed played as loud as he said he did the neighbors in those little houses around them must have gone nuts!
The blue van must have been the van that Rodney Bingenheimer was talking about. He was asked what he remembered about Van Halen club days. He said Van Halen was always having band meetings in a Van im the parking lot
@@FinalResonanceTV please jeff keep them coming i watch every interview about the days before they got big and the van halen boys growing up with nothing and becoming successful my first show was 1983 in the spectrum i was on the side of the stage Valerie was pouring eddie beers in between songs and the crowd was chanting her name until she gave us the finger we all applauded and she bowed to the crowd i was 15 it changed my life i was the youngest kid in the arena
not to bust your bubble FR, but back in the very early '70's we all boiled our strings, back in the Chicago suburbs we all boiled strings and routed strats and tele's to add hum bucking pickups. I am talking 1971 or so.

Awesome! Thanks Rick for this!! I appreciate this! So cool you guys got to know him so young!
That is so cool
We love hearing your stories. It makes someone we saw as God like seem like he was just a regular guy.
Funny I got VH1 in jr High and Ozzy Diary around the same time with Acdc Back n Black Good times and Zepp 1981

Tom is a legend just for being there in the beginning kids!!
awesome old pic of a little eddie van halen
One of your best interviews, Jeff! You and Tom seem like kindred spirits.
Cool thanks!
Big-time "Wow! 🤯" at 14:30 -- an eyewitness to Edward melting pickup wax & boiling his strings!
Cool right!!
Did Eddie Vanhalen used to boil his new guitar strings?
Eddie didn't boil new strings! The main reason people boil strings is to clean out the grime and dead skin cells! @RodKing-br3gf
I got to meet them in early 1979 in Anaheim CA. They also played the avio dutch club on katella in Anaheim CA. This was right before van Halen 2
Loved every second Thx Again
Thank You
A great interview! I wonder if Tom had any Jose amp stories, maybe for a Part 2.

Well done! Another great episode!

Intro sound clip is EDDIE VH shredding on a VH gig in 1974.
Yep Pasadena High School 1974
@@FinalResonanceTV PHS 74 and the Gas Co 73, the live recordings being held hostage by the Pasadena VH mafia. I call bullshit!

Thank you very very much! ❤
Your Welcome! Thank You!
what about those chords Tommy😂??? ..or something like that...in those early VH rehearsal audio tapes. Thnks for sharing your story, Sir.
❤
KooL !
What's the music at the end of the video?
Did Tom live in Hawaii in the early 80s? I met a guy who resembles Tom back then, who told me that he had been the soundman for Van Halen.
I’m not sure. I’ll ask him
Where did u get the shirt ?
You should find Greg Emmerson...Alex's teenage friend and drum tech up until 1985 i think.
That would be cool.
Unfortunately Greg passed away. The remaining members of the original gang is definitely on my list!
@FinalResonanceTV Wow...I didn't know. Sad to hear that.
What record did Ed appear on with Brian May? Ive never heard of it.
Starfleet

Veronica Armenta 1979 Anaheim CA
Jeff, where'd you get the shirt??
If I had a time machine, I'd ask the brothers, Can I have a Job? LoL
Add photos you mention for us!

It seems like you should be talking to the brothers that are closer to the Van Halen brothers age? Would they know them better???
I feel like I'm watching a real life version of Wayne's world.😂
Cocaine is a terrible drug..better be careful, dude.
