      There isn’t a need to do the Supercut version by the way. It’s IS a super cut, meaning that there are shorter (still 30 minutes per vid but shorter anyhow) videos that are strung together to create the 3.5 hour supercut behemoth. You can react to each individual part like a TV episode instead! Thais I how it’s supposed to be reacted to anyway.

      One of the few pitchers to challenge Bonds every time they faced and someone who earned Bonds respect was HOF pitcher John Smoltz. Smoltz was a power pitcher with a FB, slider, Change, and had a devastating Splitter he developed through his career and was one of the best if no the best split FB in MLB late in his career when he went from a SP to Closer. After he retired, Smoltz said whether he got an out or not, everyone he ever faced would take swings at his splitter. Everyone except Bonds. Smoltz said Bonds never took a swing at any splitter he threw at him.

    This is an amazing mental exercise that really demonstrates the fear factor Bonds brought to opposing pitchers. Yes it's all theoretical and makes the supposition that his real life stats and situations were imported into this simulation as the sole factors in pitching decisions. These types of video game numbers are relatively common through high school (the leader this year is over .900!), fairly rare in college, and unheard of against the top baseball talent in the world!

    Just FYI - they were only counting the Walks to start. But since some of the walks involved a foul ball and he didn't have a bat so they had to randomize it. The 335 AB's they added in after that brought it up so high just added more walks in the remaining AB's where his bat came into play.

    This has to be this guy’s side-gig. He’s so good at conveying the meaningful information to be found in oceans of data in visuals that he has to do this full time in some corporate capacity.
    Edit: so they’re saying they’re removing all events where contact was made on the last pitch of the at bat and then filling in the rest of the at bat by using randomly selected points on the pie chart of balls and strikes. This ultimately gives him an on base percentage similar to the he got in real life, but far fewer total bases.

    This is a fun exercise in math and statistics. It's a fascinating example of how metrics can suggest some pretty wild strategies. But let's be real-reality doesn't always play nice with theory.
    Advanced stats are amazing for understanding and improving performance, but they can't capture everything-especially the unpredictable human element. Momentum, emotion, and the strategic dance with other teams are things numbers just can't fully grasp.
    This reminds me of that hilarious idea from hockey analytics where mathematicians suggest pulling the goalie and running 6 on 5 almost as soon as you're down a goal-no matter the period. On paper, when they show you the math, it sounds genius! But in reality? Players and coaches would quickly counter it. You'd see defensive shells and players practicing long-distance shots from their end of the rink in no time.
    Similarly, if pitchers figured out, and they would, that Barry wasn't going to swing, they'd just throw strikes all day long. While it's a fun thought experiment, it shows how theoretical models often crash headfirst into the messy, wonderful chaos of real-life sports.

  • @psymar
    @psymar Месяц назад +1

    Bases loaded walk is an RBI, the only times a run scores without an RBI being awarded are if the run scores on a double play, a run scores on a fielding error, or a runner steals home or scores on a passed ball or wild pitch. Basically a walk or even hit by pitch forcing in a run, it's considered that the batter getting to first is what caused the run to score.
    Important note: Run scoring because of an error includes both cases where that specific runner would have stayed on third or been out if not for the error, and those where another runner would have been forced out for an inning-ending third out if not for the error. However, the latter category usually only applies with 2 out as an error cannot be charged on a play where an out is recorded ("you can't assume the double play") *except* when the ball reaches first base in time and the first baseman drops it.

  • @ncg195
    @ncg195 Месяц назад

    A bases loaded walk, intentional or not, does count as an RBI, and does count against the pitcher's ERA (assuming that the runner at third is an earned runner, ie, he didn't reach on an error or something like that). The same is true of a bases loaded hit by pitch or catcher's interference.

  • @JamesLarson47
    @JamesLarson47 Месяц назад

    Hits, walks, intentional or not, hits-by-pitch, sacrifice flies, sacrifice bunts, fielder's choices all give an RBI when the bases are loaded and a run scores. The batter does not get an RBI if he hits into a double play, but a run scores, if the pitcher or catcher balks, if the pitcher throws a wild pitch, the catcher allows a passed ball or if the player reaches base by the way of an error.

  • @phunkjnky

    In the Autumn of 2000, I did a paper in my "Sports Reporting" class on the benefit of batting behind Bonds. The school of thought is that a batter provides "protection" for the hitter ahead of him, by making him work and implying that failure and getting to Bonds by letting the previous batter reach base, is potentially more costly because you have handed Bonds an opportunity to score run(s). I forget the exact numbers, but over his career with the Pirates and the Giants, there was very tangible benefit to hitting behind Bonds. Almost a player's offensive number vastly improved hitting behind Bonds.

    5:33 - Yes, same Craig Counsell.
    7:06 - Yes, a walk with the bases loaded does, counterintuitively, count as an RBI for the batter but, more obviously, an earned run against the pitcher.
    As for whether Jon was full of crap, it would be a lot more fun to know whether the hit balls were actually in the zone or not but I think he's kinda on to something. Problem is, bat or not, pitchers would stop pitching to him if he stopped swinging.

    You could refine the simulation by changing the expected strike percentage to accurately reflect the count it was thrown in instead of it being a flat 58% chance of being a ball. A pitcher will throw more strikes in a 2-0 count than in an 0-2 count for example. But off the top of my head, Bonds' OBP would still be higher than Helton's and lead the league. Ridiculous stuff.

  • @psymar

    It should be noted .608 is still above Barry Bonds' OBP in every other season... and the best anyone ELSE ever manager was Josh Gibson in the Negro Leagues back in 1943 with .560. If you don't want to count that as reliable due to mixed levels of competition and incomplete data on those leagues, the best in the AL and NL is .553 by Ted Williams on 1941, when he also became the last player to hit .400. Williams was ahead of his time in a sense: Taking walks wasn't highly valued by much of anyone until the Moneyball A's in the 1980s, which is why none of the old-time batters who hit .400 often make the top of the list. (That, or their walks were low for the same reason their averages were high, which is pitchers throwing pitches down the middle of the strike zone; modern day pitching wasn't really a thing in the 1800s)

  • @gregcable3250
    @gregcable3250 Месяц назад

    Seems to me he can't justify using a random number generator which in the long run (in expectation) will produce .50 change of strike v walk for the fouled off pitch. Instead if he swings at pitches that are .80 strikes and .20 balls (as he said), he would need to use that probability for selecting whether the without-a-bat pitch would have been a strike or ball--thus .80 likelihood of being a strike on the fouled off pitches. Otherwise, the prior known probability information about his swings being strikes or balls is not used and he has inflated the OPS.

    His conclusion is technically wrong. He asserts at the end that "Bonds would've had a .608 OBP if he never swung the bat". That isn't true. The choices pitchers make aren't determined before the AB. A pitcher's decision making is decided by what the batter is taking and swinging at during the at bat. If Bonds never swings, then pitchers aren't going to throw him so many balls or intentionally walk him. If a player never registers hits, then just throw it down the middle every time
    What John Bois actually proved is that "If Bonds never swung the bat, but could sometimes do jedi mindtricks and make pitchers believe he swung the bat, then this would be his OBP"
