Not only does wool still feel dry when it gets wet, it is the only natural material that still retains its WARMTH when wet. I wear wool socks and wool sweaters over moisture wicking tees when outdoors for this reason. I spent 20 years in the Air Force, but bought a Navy peacoat for this reason (I outgrew it when I retired, so your point about the cut is spot on).

Fun fact: The Dutch Navy issues two different pea coats! The pijjekker (as we call them) comes in two forms: for men of lower ranks and/or less than 6 years of service you get what you would call the standard pea coat. For higher ranked individuals or sailors with at least 6 years of service, you'll get one that actually extends below the knee! Don't know why this is, but this is still a thing.
Source: the actual uniform instructions of the Dutch Navy (in Dutch of course).
I actually own a long pijjekker myself, which I got for really cheap second-hand! I love how it keeps me warm and protects me from the changeable conditions here! Greetings from the Netherlands!

I picked up a vintage US officer's (I think as it has the ?pewter? buttons) pea coat online years ago. It is soooo heavy even compared to other military coats in my wardrobe. It is actually so good at retaining my body heat with just a dress shirt and a t-shirt underneath its too warm to wear unless it is below 30dg with wind. And as an occasional pipe smoker I love how the US Navy took the time to design and place a dedicated pocket on the inside just for a pipe and tobacco pouch.

I think it also depends on how you travel. As I ride the bike a lot, I noticed that the longer overcoat, especially the double-breasted, stays on the thighs, thus protecting them from wind and also snow and rain and thus keeping the pants dry. Something a shorter coat or jacket couldn't do. The same goes if you use public transport and have to wait in the cold, then the extra length gives extra warmth to the legs.
If you have a car and mostly walk to and from the car to your destination, then a longer coat might be more of a hassle than help.
In my experience, it's quite hard to get a coat at knee length, especially if you are looking for quality.

(But I feel it fills a rather substantially different niche than the trench-coat which is more of a mixture of a light foul weather coat and a gloriefied raincoat - nothing wrong with that, I own several among them a much beloved early 90s Burberry's [yes, *that* old] but I wear them in autumn and spring)

I would just ask whether the pea coat does the same job as a trench coat? A pea coat, or similar (I prefer a sheepskin coat) does well in cold weather but clearly doesn’t perform as well in wet weather as a trench coat. I think a pea coat is more informal (difficult to wear a suit underneath) and, I’m not sure jeans and a trench coat are a match made in heaven
I would argue that you need something in both categories. If you can only afford one, I d go with a trench coat as I can wear layers underneath.
