The elevator sequence is perfection in my eyes. We’ve all pushed sample GG-3883 into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer countless times and witnessed the resulting chaos through Gordon’s eyes - for me, I’m always curious as to how it might’ve looked to those who were not in the test chamber. And HECU Collective does a damn good job at illustrating and re-envisioning the event as Barney saw it. The tension before the elevator arrives at the train station is so thick you can cut it with a knife - the slow ratcheting up of Aslan Akhmetov’s intense music piece “Meta-Collide”, the flickering lights and rumble of the facility, the offhand comments about Anomalous Materials’ involvement, the Guards running full speed for Sector C, shotguns in hand, and the announcement system broadcasting an “extreme energy field hazard”. The release of this tension comes in the form of a spectacular train derail sequence that turns the dial on the HL:BS version up to 11 (I really appreciate that they kept the Guard attempting to wave down the train then diving out of the way, that was such a badass moment in the original game); the last scream of Patrice as she falls to her death is haunting and visceral. 3:00 it's amazing even after you see the NPCs get done with their initial audio logs they actually go off and do something else instead of just disappearing off screen. It really shows just how far games have come, and as for the playthrough it does a really good job backing up the original black Mesa, showing so many different sides to that fateful morning.
I agree, this extends across the entire chapter as well. That forklift driver at 24:51 offloads his crate, then disembarks from the lift and walks over to a nearby wall, leaning against it for a small break. Incredible detail put into things people might not even notice ever.

Thanks! I intended to convey exactly what you've described. Barney might be an ass to his colleagues, but he has a good heart and jumps to the pump when duty calls
Can you imagine a Source Mod in Black Mesa but you are a Janitor? To be fair a janitor is a most likely probability to survive, having all the keys to all the doors. Janitor with a clearance of Level 9
Speaking of a remake for Opposing Force, I saw this Mod called Black Mesa Military, mod that lets us play as an HECU marine named Steven Mills, who obviously not Adrian Shephard and after I saw the HEV suit hands replaced with the HECU marine hands for holding the guns and it reminded me of the first chapter of Hunt Down The Freeman where the HECU marine protagonist "Mitchell Shephard" is inside Black Mesa, and I thought, what if we were to make a remake of the first chapter of HDTF in Black Mesa, also I kinda believe that we can make HDTF better, so petition for any modders who reads this comment, please make a remake of HDTF chapter 1 also because I kinda wanna see what Mitchell looks like in the BM version of the HECU uniform, if your wondering why only chapter 1, well since chapter 1 takes place in the Black Mesa research facility and we are to use Black Mesa, that kinda means that there can be no way to recreate the rest of HDTF
Holy hell that ending was intense! I've never played this expansion before so it's all new for me. Very immersive! The timing on those background songs are spot on again. Always gets me pumping. Looking forward to the next chapter, I hope the lady survives.... Also Barney is a butthole haha Edit: I just read the lady dies... my day is ruined
Glad you liked the timing of the music sections, I spent a bunch of time to make sure the elevator doors closed at the right time when Barney goes back up to the main lobby. And yeah, the Resonance Cascade was crazy.
Speaking of guards' lockers, and I already said it under an other BM:BS video, but it's kinda funny how the tradition of placing developers' names on them turned most of guards in this section into Russians or people of Russian descent
This is a stretch but maybe it's a nod to all the Russian lettering we see in Half Life 2? Even though that wouldn't make sense in the current timeline of the events of Half Life, this is a remake of Blue Shift, a game made just over 20 years ago and we still can't decide if it and Opposing Force are canon, so who knows.
@@thisyoutubehandleisdumbasfuck A huge portion of the HL fanbase and fan creators are Russian, but I'm really not sure if HL2's setting had any effect on that

To be very fair Black Mesa also had this, with the Anomalous Materials track playing once Gordon gets the HEV (and even HL1 with Klaxon Beat). I believe BM:BS is calling back to this. I didn't mind that track myself, got me pumped to start my shift haha
Pô eu achei legal demais haha a música synth é massa, poderiam ter encaixado ela melhor em um caminhada mais relevante mesmo, mas acho que a intenção foi se sentir empoderado na sua primeira tarefa de guarda do dia.
Haha, I wanted to show off the optional dialogue there. Though my interpretation of Calhoun is that he's not above pulling pranks like that on his coworkers, though he doesn't take it too far
I prefer this version of the train/rail cart crash, makes more sense for it to collide into something on the tracks rather than just derailing because "train go fast lol". It reminds me a bit of the movie Super 8. I wonder if it's possible to give that scientist his soda can since there was a machine nearby. Mind you it probably wouldn't make sense to help someone who's just insulted your job position.
That train crash in Super 8 still looks amazing, the suspense is incredibly well done. Unfortunately it's one of the NPC's many random voicelines and they won't bat an eye if you do get a soda. Though, if you were to chuck it at them, it does elicit some funny responses :)
this Game is still unsurpassed. Just walking around and chatting with people. Games haven't gotten any better. Rather less. You can also play this with an Intel card.
Yup, not as much as HL1 or OpFor. But I do prefer some elements of BS over OpFor. Captive Freight is one of my favourite levels in any of the original Half-Life games.
I hope the blue shift remake follows the foundation that the original was going through. But do it a little different, but adding a lot of Variants type of enemies, New Weapons, and Locations. Cause' it was lacking a lot of those features in the original. That could be the reason why Opposing force Half Life Expansion was praise as the best expansion, It had *a lot of stuffs.*
That being said this mod is already impressive in terms of how different it is from both HL:BS and Black Mesa. I can't wait for their rendition of Focal Point and the Xen environments
As Calhoun was about to go on duty he passed high level security officer 2nd lieutenant Felicia Yu, Who was in their usual get up of black tactical gear and clothing, a P226, Combat knife, And wielding an MP5. There was an inside joke with the low level guards that she was ready to mow down an army at a moments notice. Felicia:"Morning Calhoun, Got called by Dr. Vance to look after his kid as he works." Barney:"Alyx?, That shouldn't be too hard she's a nice kid just word of warning Don't let her distract the other scientists have her play cards or something." Felicia:"Why's that?" Barney looked around for a sec Barney:"Because of Dr.'You Know Who'" Felicia:"Christ Dr.Horn? Yeah I can see why." Barney:"Anyway see ya at break." He went to leave but suddenly turned around Barney:"Oh tell Alyx and Eli I said hi." Felicia:"10-4 Barney." Done I recently thought of making a half life OC so yeah Give you a brief rundown Full name:Felicia Yu Ethnicity:Chinese-American Former profession:American Black Ops Eye color:Dark Brown/Black Rank:2nd lieutenant (US Army officer rank) Hair color:Black General information: Knows multiple martial arts techniques which include but are not limited to Judo, taekwondo, Kung Fu, and jiu-jitsu, proficient in multiple small arms weaponry such as assault rifles, SMGs, sidearms, DMRs and sniper rifles. Psychological evaluation: Will often try to save as many people as she can even if said people are of opposing forces, charming and optimistic most of the time and are focused under pressure. Forgive me if this is a bit too much
This frequent nodding whenever an NPC ask you something, as well as dicking around, helps to showcase all the various interaction outcomes but at the same time seem so me like a divorce from your usual style of narrative and immersive play. Unless of course your intention all along is to portray Barney as a hyperactive prankster with an itchy trigger finger, which is equally cool.
Yeah, definitely intentional. I wanted to portray Barney as a prankster, just like Freeman, but a bit more aggressive and with a "take no shit" attitude, especially since he's a guard that is constantly looked down upon by the science team. You'll notice that I went after the scientist who threatened the clerk about his emails by unplugging his laptop (Barney standing up for his buddy), and pullling some other pranks. But I tried not to take it too far - for instance I was messing with the guard with the screwdriver but gave it back to him at the end - had I not he would've been shocked by electricity as he no longer has the tool. Of course the intent is also to showcase as much of the optional interactions as possible too. Hopefully I didn't go too far with this. The increased nodding was an attempt by me to make him more human - in my Black Mesa playthrough it often seemed like I wasn't acknowledging NPCs that were giving me direction so that's why I'm doing it more.
Yeah and he's probably not a bog standard rent a cop too. Security in BMRF is basically IT and maintenance, I'd wager Otis has a bachelor's in communications or comp sci too. Not to mention a loving mother ❤
ADDITIONAL TRIVIA: Shooting/killing any of the guards in the firing range (11:37) will result in a game over screen with the following message: SUBJECT: Calhoun STATUS: Employment terminated REASON: Improper handling of a firearm in the facility Barney's locker (5:24) contains some notable references: (1) A poster of "Prax Wars 2: Dante's Revenge. This is a reference to Prax War, a cancelled video game by Rebel Boat Rocker. The key members of the studio later founded Gearbox Software. This same game title is found on the arcade machine during the intro tram ride in HL:BS (2) A sticky note reminder to buy Gordon Freeman a beer - a reference to one of the random voicelines uttered by security guards in HL1, as well as to HL2's Barney intro (3) A sticker of a chumtoad, a Xenian creature in Opposing Force and Blue Shift. In HL:BS, a chumtoad can be found in Barney's locker upon breaking open a package with his pistol. Since Barney automatically holsters his pistol in BM:BS outside of the shooting range, this is not possible in the mod (4) Two not-so-subtle books that foreshadow the events of Half-Life. These are the same books as in HL:BS (5) Additional tidbit from the voice actor for Otis himself, UnstoppableGiant - if one is to noclip inside the locker to view the book covers, some very interesting cover images can be seen ;) The security camera terminal at 6:50 allows Barney to see some interesting items: (1) Freeman makes his way from the tram station to his locker in the Anomalous Materials lab at 6:51. The two scientists conversing on the left of the hallway are the same two as from BM (2) Gina Cross, one of two main characters in Half-Life: Decay and the model for the holographic assistant in the Hazard Course, is seen pushing the cart containing sample GG-3883 to the Anti-Mass spectrometer at 7:37 - this crystal eventually causes the Resonance Cascade. Interestingly, she is shown donning her grey suit ( the canon color) as opposed to the orange in HL:BS (3) An image of Breen briefly flashes on the screen when the guard destroys the camera at 8:29. This is the same image used in HL2 when the Breencast monitors are glitching out (4) The scientist performs a dab at 8:36 - this may be a reference to the dancing scientist easter egg in HL:BS (also located at the same camera in the original game) (5) The guard carrying the coffee mug and female scientist at 8:35 are the same two that Gordon interacts with in the cafeteria in Anomalous Materials. They are shown headed to the cafeteria in the camera feed (6) It should also be noted that the scripted sequences of the dabbing scientist and the Otis/Donut conversation do not happen immediately upon switching back to their respective camera feeds a second time as shown in the video, but rather after a short duration after Barney first scrolls through the feed. The time that thess sequences occur varied for me for each recording, so I’m not sure when exactly it’s timed to play. However, for pacing reasons I just edited the footage so that it seemed as though they happen sooner
I like how one of the notes on Calhoun’s locker says, “Get Beer for Gordon.” I also saw a sticker of the Chumtoad on his locker. The Chumtoad is a cut NPC from Gearbox and Valve.
That's probably a reference to the easter egg in the original Blue Shift where if you shoot the box in Barney's locker enough times, it breaks and there is a Chumtoad inside.
@@yourfellowducky2712 The Chumtoad was supposed to be a criter/enemy(?) In the original Blue Shift, but ended up becoming an easter egg, or some stuffed toy as a gift to Barney's girl. I suppose.
Yeah. It reminded me of the panicking scientists in the elevator after the Resonance Cascade in Unforeseen Consequences. Heartwrenchingly realistic voice acting
@@Sexy_Nutellaif you work at a top secret research facility and it happens to be May 16th in the 2000’s and every starts braking maybe just prepare for unforeseen consequences
Apparently the reason why things kept breaking throughout this chapter and the last chapter was that the people in the Anomalous Materials lab were pushing a lot of power towards the Anti-Mass Spectrometer for the experiment that Gordon Freeman is involved in. As that scientist Trevor said at 30:41, they were pushing their equipment too hard.
This remake has brought another level of terror into our famous distopia. They have proven once again that nothing can be ordinary, calm and usual in Half Life Universe. The elevator fall just before we seen a chaotic nightmare was so intense, the music and the screams of the lady scientist, energy failure warnings, announcement of unauthorized biological forms in several sectors; this could only mean; our world's dying sigh. I want to see more dramatic and shocking scenes in the following chapters as well, such as a security guard getting pulled by two zombies and falling to their deaths.

@@Sexy_Nutella Ohh, hm. I see, I see. I honestly thought it was forgotten since it'd be strange to include a far older Breen's face inside the game, but at the same time it could be said to hint at more than what seems to be.
It's a reused effect from Half-Life 2. You can see this exact one on a breencast screen on a distant building in the chapter Water Hazard. If you look closely it also shows an eerie and ghostly image of G-Man for a split second. It's probably unintended for those images to appear here
26:00 "Yeah that seems to be the running gag" Loved the meta joke here xD The build-up for the Resonance Cascade is insane! Never thought I would experience such an unnerving soundtrack either. Honestly I thought Blue Shift would be a bit more boring to watch but this reimagined elevator sequence turned out to be possibly one of my favorite bits in the franchise. Note: Barney "pranking" kinda fits the character since he's actually quite humorous himself.
Did anyone play original HF and BS thinking that its not goofy enough? Why did they put so much goofy lines in this mod?! Anyway - love your playthroughs Nutella
The original was kinda hilarious af on purpose, just in a different way. The disaster and character deaths were over the top and meant to be humorous, but with the tone of HL2 and Black Mesa such things are taken more seriously with more detailed characters and world building so they kinda translated it to dialogue instead. Same level of silliness I think
Watching this is like watching a news coverage on 9/11 before the towers fell. You know what's going to happen, you know it's terrible, and with each passing minute the tension is palpable. Amazing.
It does a great job playing off the fact that the player knows what's going to happen, and just shows you all the signs to make it feel dreadful all over again

The song timing should be done in engine honestly, this fit so perfectly the music should be 2 parts and transfer between lower volume repeat while dialogue is on and more intense when moving between places. its absolutely stunning the atmosphere it created
actually has neat gameplay for once without some overly cramped thumbnail and annoying stuff, keep it up nutella!
Thanks for the kind words! Thumbnail creation is one of the most fun parts of making these. Like you've said I try my best to make an eye-catching one without making it needlessly cluttered. Happy to hear it turned out well
3:00 it's amazing even after you see the NPCs get done with their initial audio logs they actually go off and do something else instead of just disappearing off screen.
@@Sexy_Nutella and those are the kind of things that turn up five or six hour play through into a 10 to 12 hour play through, just all a little discrete details.
Hopefully they get the next chapters out soon.

Can't wait for the next chapter! The attention to the small details in this chapter really makes me want to just not proceed further down the story line and just thoroughly explore the area. Love what the developers did with blue shift!
Agreed. Same reason I love just messing around in Anomalous materials hah
I really love the added character flare you put in..the ending..just htat split second of rushing to the woman as the elevator falls makes calhoun feel heroic..even after all the idiotic antics along the way. Really loved your presentation here, and looking forward to what happens next! :D
Thanks! I intended to convey exactly what you've described. Barney might be an ass to his colleagues, but he has a good heart and jumps to the pump when duty calls
I loved when Barney flashed the guy with the camera. 🤣🤣🤣
The fact that they took time to add stuff like this into the game is super cool and hilarious haha
24:06 I tried stopping the cart here by putting myself in front of it. Unfortunately, all that did was crush me between it and the crates and kill me.
Lmao, that happened to me too. Hence why I didn't do it in the video lol

It's crazy to see how quick can everything go to shit in an event like this
Speaking of a remake for Opposing Force, I saw this Mod called Black Mesa Military, mod that lets us play as an HECU marine named Steven Mills, who obviously not Adrian Shephard and after I saw the HEV suit hands replaced with the HECU marine hands for holding the guns and it reminded me of the first chapter of Hunt Down The Freeman where the HECU marine protagonist "Mitchell Shephard" is inside Black Mesa, and I thought, what if we were to make a remake of the first chapter of HDTF in Black Mesa, also I kinda believe that we can make HDTF better, so petition for any modders who reads this comment, please make a remake of HDTF chapter 1 also because I kinda wanna see what Mitchell looks like in the BM version of the HECU uniform, if your wondering why only chapter 1, well since chapter 1 takes place in the Black Mesa research facility and we are to use Black Mesa, that kinda means that there can be no way to recreate the rest of HDTF
I still need to check out BM: Military. Heard good things about it :)
@@Sexy_Nutella it IS good, but it's still a work in progress if you look at the sniper rifle and how the gibs for the male Black Ops are HGrunt gibs.

Glad you liked the timing of the music sections, I spent a bunch of time to make sure the elevator doors closed at the right time when Barney goes back up to the main lobby. And yeah, the Resonance Cascade was crazy.

Same here!
Speaking of guards' lockers, and I already said it under an other BM:BS video, but it's kinda funny how the tradition of placing developers' names on them turned most of guards in this section into Russians or people of Russian descent
Hahaha, never thought about that!

@@Sexy_Nutella He and Gordon did crawl through vents to try to race into Kleiner's office without a key

Nice little easter egg
silly question but did u ever play regular blueshift before
Yup, not as much as HL1 or OpFor.
@Fjuro yeah I guess so
That being said this mod is already impressive in terms of how different it is from both HL:BS and Black Mesa. I can't wait for their rendition of Focal Point and the Xen environments

That train crash reminded me more of Super 8 by JJ Abrams haha
As Calhoun was about to go on duty he passed high level security officer 2nd lieutenant Felicia Yu, Who was in their usual get up of black tactical gear and clothing, a P226, Combat knife, And wielding an MP5. There was an inside joke with the low level guards that she was ready to mow down an army at a moments notice.
Felicia:"Morning Calhoun, Got called by Dr. Vance to look after his kid as he works."
Barney:"Alyx?, That shouldn't be too hard she's a nice kid just word of warning Don't let her distract the other scientists have her play cards or something."
Felicia:"Why's that?"
Barney looked around for a sec
Barney:"Because of Dr.'You Know Who'"
Felicia:"Christ Dr.Horn? Yeah I can see why."

Make fun of Otis all you like but he’s the one working for a classified government facility and not you
And probably making a better wage than I am :(

Oh definitely. The sheer amount of dedication and creativity of Half-Life fans is incredible.
ADDITIONAL TRIVIA:
Shooting/killing any of the guards in the firing range (11:37) will result in a game over screen with the following message:
SUBJECT: Calhoun
STATUS: Employment terminated
REASON: Improper handling of a firearm in the facility
Barney's locker (5:24) contains some notable references:
(1) A poster of "Prax Wars 2: Dante's Revenge. This is a reference to Prax War, a cancelled video game by Rebel Boat Rocker. The key members of the studio later founded Gearbox Software. This same game title is found on the arcade machine during the intro tram ride in HL:BS
(2) A sticky note reminder to buy Gordon Freeman a beer - a reference to one of the random voicelines uttered by security guards in HL1, as well as to HL2's Barney intro
(3) A sticker of a chumtoad, a Xenian creature in Opposing Force and Blue Shift. In HL:BS, a chumtoad can be found in Barney's locker upon breaking open a package with his pistol. Since Barney automatically holsters his pistol in BM:BS outside of the shooting range, this is not possible in the mod
(4) Two not-so-subtle books that foreshadow the events of Half-Life. These are the same books as in HL:BS
(5) Additional tidbit from the voice actor for Otis himself, UnstoppableGiant - if one is to noclip inside the locker to view the book covers, some very interesting cover images can be seen ;)
The security camera terminal at 6:50 allows Barney to see some interesting items:
(1) Freeman makes his way from the tram station to his locker in the Anomalous Materials lab at 6:51. The two scientists conversing on the left of the hallway are the same two as from BM
(2) Gina Cross, one of two main characters in Half-Life: Decay and the model for the holographic assistant in the Hazard Course, is seen pushing the cart containing sample GG-3883 to the Anti-Mass spectrometer at 7:37 - this crystal eventually causes the Resonance Cascade. Interestingly, she is shown donning her grey suit ( the canon color) as opposed to the orange in HL:BS
(3) An image of Breen briefly flashes on the screen when the guard destroys the camera at 8:29. This is the same image used in HL2 when the Breencast monitors are glitching out
(4) The scientist performs a dab at 8:36 - this may be a reference to the dancing scientist easter egg in HL:BS (also located at the same camera in the original game)
(5) The guard carrying the coffee mug and female scientist at 8:35 are the same two that Gordon interacts with in the cafeteria in Anomalous Materials. They are shown headed to the cafeteria in the camera feed
(6) It should also be noted that the scripted sequences of the dabbing scientist and the Otis/Donut conversation do not happen immediately upon switching back to their respective camera feeds a second time as shown in the video, but rather after a short duration after Barney first scrolls through the feed. The time that thess sequences occur varied for me for each recording, so I’m not sure when exactly it’s timed to play. However, for pacing reasons I just edited the footage so that it seemed as though they happen sooner
You didn’t check the covers of the books, did ya? ;)
@@UnstoppableGiant Just did and I'm dead. Tossing that tidbit in the description, but perhaps without spoiling what they are ;)
I like how one of the notes on Calhoun’s locker says, “Get Beer for Gordon.”
I also saw a sticker of the Chumtoad on his locker. The Chumtoad is a cut NPC from Gearbox and Valve.
Good eye, yeah those references are on point haha
That's probably a reference to the easter egg in the original Blue Shift where if you shoot the box in Barney's locker enough times, it breaks and there is a Chumtoad inside.
@@Funguy100005 Totally a reference. I mean, why would they put a chumtoad in there?
@@yourfellowducky2712 The Chumtoad was supposed to be a criter/enemy(?) In the original Blue Shift, but ended up becoming an easter egg, or some stuffed toy as a gift to Barney's girl. I suppose.
I like to think that Calhoun uplugging the male-karen’s laptop charger was just an act of revenge for getting mad at that one security officer
33:02 that scream always freaks me out
Yeah. It reminded me of the panicking scientists in the elevator after the Resonance Cascade in Unforeseen Consequences. Heartwrenchingly realistic voice acting

Some of these animations really need to be refined ngl
They are a huge improvement over previous versions, I personally think they're fine. I can see what you mean during the transitions though
Yes. Because some suit with a briefcase press them to do it and the administrator agreed with that.

To be fair the goofiness was there in the original, there just wasn't that much dialogue compared to this mod. Thanks for the comment!
