They're still doing it. Massive abuse to the kindest of the breeds of horses.
Mustard paste, gasoline and other irritants put on their feet and wrapped so it cooks the flesh and makes them sore. The lifts on their hooves have multiple nails in them and put their front hooves at such an unnatural angle they use their back feet to try to compensate for the excruciating pain they live with. They are kept with "anklet" chains around the sored area so they want to lift their legs as high as possible to avoid it. Add to that a huge shank bit the riders literally hang onto to balance themselves and roweled spurs, this is animal abuse worse than dog fighting or cock fighting.
These poor horses live it 24/7. There is no respite.
It makes me sick how people treat animals especially for SPORT!

I am a farrier, the weights are so extreme the horses actually ‘fall’ of their shoes. This breed has a marvelous gait and is a delight to ride without the insanity of the weighted shoes.
what about Morgans, Arabians, and other breeds? What about TW that wear heavy shoes but no pads? The pads are only plastic, after all. Just plastic.

The inspectors are against the industry themselves to they are very hard on it. Any horse even with a slight indication caused by chemicals or not can’t show and the trainers loose money. If they are caught in the act they get jail time.

Notes about Soring, Chains and the Hoof Pads:
Soring uses chemicals to burn away the fur and make the skin blister.
The chains are then wrapped around the hoof so that when the horse walks, the chain scraps/brushes the blisters, causing the extreme walk from flinching.
The small hoof pads are simply plastic, and can weigh from 1 to 5 pounds. The large hoof pads can be weighted with iron or lead in the sole, causing the weight to be from anywhere between 5 to even 20 pounds.
Along with this, they cut the tendon in the horse's tail before tying it up so that the tail sits "correctly."
Following this is also placing the weight onto the back legs, which are only meant to carry roughly 25% of the horse's weight. This causes hips issues, leg bowing, and many other issues.
Anyone that agrees with these horrific practices either does not give a dam about the health of these horses or and is only interested in the dollars to be made from what
their painful showing might bring. i know many that boycott these shows because of the cruelty.

People, boycott the events where these animals are used abd tell the organisation WHY you are boycotting them. Protest anybody wanting to book them and make it counterproductive to do so. Too bad their charity won't bring in as much money as they hoped, but it will teach them a lesson and it saves the horses in the future.

She meant the pasterns I believe, and yes it is done to "big lick" horses. Just because she hasn't been in the industry doesn't mean soring is not a thing. You might not treat your horses that way, but you can't speak for everyone in the industry, especially not when there's heaps of video footage of this practice out there.

These are beautiful, gentle horses, and need to be able to perform naturally, and to their natural ability. I am an amateur horse petter that used to look for gentle horses such as these to pet in the shade. They can be outstanding without having to be abused. It didn't use to be as it is now.
I think if anything the rule would help these charities. People have boycotted these shows because of the abuse and now their support may return when they know these walkers gait is natural. I just don't see why they can't continue to show the horses with a natural gait
Yeah, especially since the horse's natural gaits are so smooth and pleasurable to the rider. I don't think riding a big lick horse would be much fun. I rode my friend's TWH gelding, who was barefoot trimmed, and he had the smoothest gaits ever. He was a fun ride.

If anyone has ever watched the video on RUclips of Midnight Sun and other TWH’s from the 40’s racking on with nothing but a toe-weight shoe, at most, on their hooves, you’d throw rocks at the stuff they do today.

The issue with the pads is trainers often put things in them to irritate the frog of the hoof. They put metal screws and

the only nails in the pads (if you look at an xray) are to hold the plastic pads together. Nails don't go into the foot. The only nails used on the horse are the same kind all horses use, to nail the base plate through the hoof wall. Then the plastic pads get attached to that but not to anything else.

Not all boots are cruel. I use "Easy Boots" on my horse instead of nail-on shoes. They have gel insoles even. They attach to the horse's hoof with velcro, and are removed when the horse has finished his work, and can be barefoot the rest of the time.

Big Lick is ABUSIVE!!!! The horses are abused like no tomorrow, their tails are cut and forced to fold over, the soring has been banned for years but it is STILL going on and spray paint is used to cover up the scarring caused by soring. Horses are beat if they flinch and they are started as young at 14 months old, possibly younger. They use massive shank bits in the mouth to force the head higher and the rider that is just thrown up there, majority of the time doesn't even know how to ride correctly. If you call hunched over and using the reins for balance, riding, then you need a reality check.

Carley_.s have you had chains digging into your ankle (while it is chemically burned/baked)and then heels (most likely twice the weight of your feet combined) nailed into the bottom of your foot? Cuz I think you would need help if you approved of the soring and equipment these horses put up with and suffer from both mentally and physically every day of their life since introduced to it. Also if you where unaware of how severe those abused horses have it, you should do more research before you comment such a thing.
Emerald Heart don’t tell me to do more research. I know just about everything that happens in the industry. Quite frankly I think you should do more research. But here’s an analogy I like to use that tends to help many people understand a little bit more about the industry. The chains weigh under a pound in most cases. And as you likely know, horses weigh over 1,000 pounds. The chains that they wear don’t cause them pain and weigh even less than a bracelet we wear. And I’ve worn many bracelets and ankle bracelets. And the pads they wear are typically under 5 pounds. And like I said an animal over 1,000 pounds that’s not very much. The small heels I wear occasionally weigh more for my body weight than the horse’s pad. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

The way they move their legs when they are being ridden, especially their back legs, does not look good, they look like they are crippled. For further explanation,these horses have a NATURAL smooth way of moving or gaiting.Some exhibitors decided that if they could exaggerate this movement they would "place " better in the shows. Eventually this "new" movement was "rewarded" enough to encourage more and more and a "new" class of competition was added. Since this highly specialized movement and equipment plus the upkeep required most people to hire a trainer it started turning into a "rich" man money game.The horses ( which were already somewhat valuable due to not being available in big numbers) now became big money horses due to the "owners" having so much invested in them. Then came more and more pressure to "win" to justify the prices and investment.Thus the questionable methods of soring (caustic chemicals) and other inhumane "tricks" came into use. The poor horses suffered for years until finally enough peoples ire and disapproval started to SLOWLY bring about a change. One man started a effort to change things and has dedicated almost 7 years out of his life.He has made a lot of progress. There used to be a show circuit that went all through the south,one by one these charity and show sponsors decided they no longer wanted to support this cruelty.Now there only remain 2 big shows left,one in Ashville N.C. and the big self-supported one in TN, where the breed association is headquartered. Attendance for these 2 that used to be almost standing room only has fallen to the point where majority of attendees are family members or others directly affiliated in some way. The question of whether the breed registry membership wanted to do away with these classes and training methods was put to a vote over 3 years ago.( membership at that time was approx. 25,000) Members voted by large majority that they wanted all this to go away.The board of directors ignored this vote and continue to do so as of today (Sep.12,2020) Unexplainable! How do you ignore the wishes of the membership that forms the organization that you represent? Since this took place membership has declined to aprox.2,500 members at present. The reference to President Trump at the beginning of this video is referring to a majority vote in the house,again several years ago,to a new law that was going to make all this illegal. PASTACT When he took office he canceled an entire package of executive orders Obama had left undone.This law was one in that package.It only needs to go to Congress for a final vote but Mitch McConnell (R) KY. keeps blocking it because so many of the people involved with this particular activity are big donors to him.Old money judges,lawyers,Drs. etc. If everyone took the time to contact their Congressman or woman,Make Tweets on Twitter,use all of the many ways to contact representatives in Washington in this ELECTION year we could probably really get this last final push! I have a handsome tennese walking horse gelding and I was terrified when I figured out all these chemicals they put on their horses legs then wrap them and cook the horses legs with these harsh chemicals then they cover up the wounds with hair growth stuff or spray paint. The derby,dressage is abuse to people need to learn when to stop! And people still do it!
And it is the DQP's job to check each and every horse's front pasterns before he goes in the ring to make sure nothing illegal has been done. These people are specially trained to detect any soreness. IF they find anything, the horse is disqualified and the owner and trainer can be fined. SO, do you think they would want to take a chance on that?

When she's hurt, she makes NO sign of it- which makes me even more hyperaware of her health. And that's what makes me think she was hurt by these methods in the past and thus doesn't respond to pain.

When getting rid of pads and abuse for Tennessee walkers, they need to Disclude trotting breeds. Walking breed like the Tennessee walkers are putting a bad name out for trotting breeds like the American Saddlebred, Morgan, and hackney pony.

You have never been a horse so how would you know how it feels, you laugh at them , I have seen a horse crying in pain, how old do you think they get , you must know this is misuse, if you say you know horses and no, you are a human but a horse is build in another way, this is not normal , you try to make a human child have gasoline on or benzine around ankles, put some cloth around the child's legs, you will hear something , better yet do it on your self the whole night with that on your legs you have not tried it I don't believe you have and a child is a child you are still young your self, if someone did this to you, I won't believe you would like it , but you as a human your consciousness know whats right or wrong, is it right to drive while drinking beer and being drunk or have the mobile in front of your eyes while driving , no it's against the law , but people do it anyway, reading while they drive their car, it's actually driving like a drunk , so when people know whats right but do it anyway, what can a child do towards a grown adult person with a consciousness who know exactly what they are doing to the child the adult they do it anyway, they know it's wrong . The adult know how to use chemicals towards the young horse, who can't defend them self ofcourse you can hurt a horse its a child your not allowed to ride a horse before the horse is 5 years old and not with a grown man on their back, it depend on weight and horse and these horses are not fully grown and already a grown adult person sitting on them like this.Their bones are like your bones ,so if the law say you are only allowed to lift 10 kg at work but the Boss say if I say you have to lift 20 kg because I say you can do it. Your bones have damage . And 10 years after ,your back is destroyed and you can't work because the lift you did was to heavy while to young , then you have to be put down, oh no, that's the horse because people don't care anymore about them and also this is not 10 year after you hurt your back, no this is only 5 year or less they are finished in their body its destroyed the bones every thing . We don’t put any chemicals on their feet, that happened over 30 years ago. 4. Many walking horses have lived to be 40 years old. It varies by the horse obviously. 5. You said I haven’t been around horses but that sure is an incorrect statement. 6. A horse can easily defend themselves by bucking, kicking, or rearing up. Any experienced horse person should know that which leads me to believe your not around walking horses very often. 7. It has been proven by our vets that it is completely okay to ride the horse at its age. It’s different for all breeds obviously, but we wouldn’t do anything to structurally harm the horse. 8. And you don’t know how crazy you sound saying we have to put horses down at a young age and that their bones are severely damaged by 5 years old. That is entirely untrue and I’ve never even heard of that happening. 9. You keep saying you want it to happen to me. I’ve done that a while ago. The pads to the horse weigh even less than a small high heel. I’ve worn those plenty of times. 10. My back isn’t destroyed and I’ve worn heels my whole life. I have ridden walking horses all day with no issues. But this was in the late 50s so maybe some issues have arisin since but the horse that I rode was a pleasure horse not a show horse. I am sorry to say that any show horse car or pet people will push the limit to win.
