- In this video we are building a DIY backyard corner pergola! See more in the description for the full list of materials we used.
We had trouble finding a triangle shaped pergola that was big enough (and still within our budget) for the space we wanted, so we decided to build one ourselves from scratch. All of the materials we used were picked up from our local hardware store, and all of the wood was cut and stained from stock. We did not follow any specific plans, and cut everything to fit as we went.
Hardware:
Post Base - amzn.to/3yPPcie

"I made that," (or, "I did that.") is something that never gets old to me. That sense of pride you feel can never get taken from you. Great job.
that fence wall is every homeowner dream.
Thanks for the item links in the description - 3 years later and the links are still good !!! 😮
I was totally overthinking my project and you made it so easy and cost efficient
Turned out great! I actually just came for the concrete footing video, but ended up watching this video to see how it all turned out. Lol I learned a lot. Thanks
I love the triangular shape to fit into the corner.
I'm going to build exactly this in my yard, thanks for the materials list and the step-by-step instructions.
Thanks for watching and good luck!
I'm really impressed with this video! You've done a great job listing the hardware/sources. Thanks for your efforts.
Looks like a El Paso TX Wall in the background. Lived around the country and only see these type of rock walls there.
You got it!
Thany you for sharing your experience. I made my own triangular pergola on decking and everyone is blown away with it! Thank you for sharing!
Awesome!! Thanks so much for watching!
This is a very well put together pergola. Nice job! Thank you for sharing and for the details.
Nicely done. Really like the stone fence!!!
Looks fantastic! The spacer block is a great idea 👍👍
I love using diy templates, unsung heroes!!
Great pergola. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I saw some pergola online for so much more. I fellow your video step by step. Wow.. it was easy. I wish I could post my 📸 for you to see. It came out great. My wife is so happy, to say the least. Thanks again. It's a great video.
Thank You so much for this excellent tutorial.
very beautiful great job thank you for giving me the confidence to built one in my back yard
Just beautiful great job!!!! Can’t wait for your next project.
I'm quite impressed with your way of doing this
that stain made all the difference wow
Brilliant! I've just started laying the patio and while digging out was planning a pergola build in my head.... this is pretty much exactly the same as what I had come up with. I had some reservations over the design/build, which you addressed perfectly.
Great build and renewed my confidence to do my own!
Good luck on the build and thanks for watching!
great video! Made it a really approachable project!
Great job!! this turned out AMAZING!!! Thank you for sharing, I have been wanting to build our own but every video I watch makes it look too complicated lol, I love this design!
Really nice and the baby is so cute
FANTASTIC! THANKS FOR SHARING.
Nice job, looks great
Great job building that pergola. I see some of your neighbours have trees that provide shade as well that could be an option if it is shade you're after.
thats a great stone wall!
Finally, someone using proper ppe. Congratulations, you are not one of darwins victims
I'm in the process of designing and starting our pergola. I am torn about using the simpson screws vs a good size bolt through all 3 boards. Even my lumber place ( not big box ) was suggesting to use carriage bolts. Nice work.
If it helps your decision, they have held up great through 3 years! Carriage bolts would of course be a fine option too. Thanks for watching and good luck with your build!
Very nice guys! ❤❤❤
Nice job, it looks great against the natural stone fence
great project. prior to seeing this video I recently built a pergola/shade cover for my father in law (you can see my most recent video if you're interested) and I was like "hey, I used the same products!" haha! We used a couple other Outdoor Accents parts also. Keep up the great work! 👊🏻
Nice job
Great Corner pergola!!
That came out great, Looks like you might live in the Great City of El Paso Tx looks like my neighborhood on the east side montwood area. Great work man.
Good works. But I believe the Design Cutting at the Woods Edge will be much Nice looking had you cut it the Opposite way as most Pergola I saw at RUclips.
Thank you. I love it. I have a similar project in mind with a koi pond. Thank you!
you did a nice job...your son is awesome!!!!!
This looks fantastic! We are gearing up to build one in our backyard and this gave us some great guidance
Thanks for the kind words, good luck!
Nice job !
Looking forward to seeing
What else you guy's do...
Well done .
Really nice job. Looks amazing. Hope you and your family have many many years of enjoyment with it.

Awesome job thank you soooo much for sharing! Love it!
Muchas gracias por el video. Tengo que hacer una igual pero con algo de inclinacion para poner techo, para tapar un horno. Me ha encantado. GRACIAS
Beautiful!
Good work! Looks fantastic!
Great job!
Very nice! We'll done.
Nice job! You just forget the washer when you install the third post. I think it will be ok. Please, what is the final cover's size of the pergola? Thank and again, good job!
NICE WORK NICE VIDEO. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
Looks great!
Very informative and nicely done,I have a but! The music for me was waaaaaay to loud at times, sorry
Thanks for the heads up! Still working out the kinks on the editing process.
I was enjoying the video… but..your comment put me off ..sorry
You did an awesome job! Enjoy
Great job, very helpful!
Very professional.
nice job❤
Very nice!
This turned out awesome! Absolutely love that wall bordering your backyard as well. Do you have a video of that construction?
Unfortunately not. These walls are a city-wide feature. Every home lot has these rock walls on the side and rear yards. It's certainly unique!
Great trellis although I'd be concerned about that fabric eventually deteriorating via uv exposure! That's also a helluva stone wall y'all have there!
Thank you! We went with a higher quality fabric that was sold by the foot in the outdoor section at Lowes. Our UV index is always bonkers out here in the desert, but the fabric has held up better than most things in our yard. Very impressed with it. Thanks for watching!
Wow …talk about good fences making good neighbors
That came out great!
Very cool!
Lovely job
couldn't help but notice that fence
Thanks man you have helped me
Quality job. Fair play.
Great video, thanks!
Marvelous
Ripper,
Now you need some green on the stone wall
Dom
Great job 👏
Great job👍!
Next, the patio with a fire pit in front of the pergola...
Nice job!
Currently halfway through building just that! Excited to have it finished. Thank you!
Wow-zer! Really great job. Turned out gorgeous!
What shade fabric material did you use? And how is it holding up?
I thought they used a canvas or tyvec
Sweet!
Thanks!
Very nice.
I love it
Great Idea - here in Yuma me and my wife have designed a three legged pergola, and "wha-la" your video is helpful similar to our sizes has well. Our idea is to put a lightweight swing chair inside, the purchased chair is a Wayfair product that will hold up to 600lbs. Do you think the 2 x 6 rafters or 2 x 8 beams will sustain the weight? Also the center cross beam i don't think you put the hardware for those. I'm assuming they are a left & right hand 2 x 8 joist hanger from Simpson strong tie or other? Instead of ordering or purchasing 2 I presume it would be 4 si or no?
Best idea for my small yard. How many centimeters deep you set the concrete base ground please
That's all dependent on your climate and soil type. Your local building guidelines should help with this. I'm not sure how it is done outside of the US, but here you can contact your city representatives or possibly the website. My base only had to extend around 45cm below ground, but yours may be different.
Good work ! I instantly saw the rock wall and I’m guessing this is El Paso ?
It is El Paso! Thanks for watching!
Is there a way to coat these wooden beams and posts with a coating that has a composite-like qualities? Something that would give a uniform, glossy look, and at the same time provide protection from elements, rotting, mould, and other impacts? Nice job by the way.
First of all I wanna say congratulations on a job well done but I just want to mention that in a high wind areas the wind will rip out the screen in no time. Please let me know how’s it holding up so far.
One last question how much did the material cost you ?
Thank you! We are a little over a year out from completion, and so far it looks just like the day it was built. I'm honestly a little surprised at how well the screen has held. So far it has gone through several storms with 50+ mph winds, two snows (one with 4-6 inches), a few minor hail storms, and one with category 1 hurricane winds. We essentially live on the side of a mountain where the wind is a serious problem, but so far so good!
All said and done this cost a little under $800. Fortunately I was able to buy all of the material right before lumber prices went crazy, so it definitely would have been more expensive if I built it today. Very much looking forward to costs coming down soon!
Wtf that stone fence is insane
I take it Amazon doesn’t have a complete hardware kit and you will have to piece part it?
Nice!
hello can you please let me know the exact product list of how many of everything you used hardware and wood , I see the wood specs but not how many of each , thank you so much its beautiful!
Posts - 6" x 6" x 8' - (3)
Beams - 2" x 8" x 16' - (4)
Rafters - 2" x 6" x 16' - (5)
2" x 6" x 8' - (8)
Strapping - 1" x 2" x 8' - (10)
You could substitute 2 of the 2" x 6" x 16' for 12' lengths, they just didn't carry them at my local store.
Good luck!
Post Base - (3)
Deck Joist Tie - (2)
Angled Rafter Hanger (left) - (1)
Angled Rafter Hanger (right) - (1)
3-1/2" Structural Screw - (24)
5-1/2" Structural Screw - (12)
Decorative Washers - (24)
Rafter Clips - (35)
Thank you for all the info!
Great job and absolutely love those brackets saves time p*ssing about notching in and they certainly look the part. However impossible to find any decorative brackets of this standard in UK - extremely frustrating. Looks like my only choice is to order from US get bent over the table on shipping fees then a good old fisting from UK customs on import tax. Am sure it will be worth it though.
Great job! It looks amazing. We are looking to build something the same and your material list is very helpful, however I don't see anywhere where it says the size or measurements between the 6x6 posts. Can you tell me what size the pergola is and what the distance is between the center of the footings (distance between the cement bolts).
For the two sides that run along the wall, the bolts are 10 feet from each other, which puts the long front side at a distance just a hair over 14 feet (170 inches).
Great production of your process! Do you think that the 2 rafter straps on either end is enough to keep them from pushing over in a strong wind? I’m getting ready to start a similar process of pergola/deck. Thanks!
I ended up adding a third clip to the longer rafters that attached to that extra support beam that went across the middle. The longest ones have three but the shorter ones still have only 2. We've been hit with several wind storms since completion, one got up to 75+mph gusts, and it's still holding up beautifully. Thanks!
At ~14:40, you probably meant "rogue" toddler instead of "rouge" toddler. Thanks for the great video!
I think you're the first person to catch that!
El Paso right ? What other city has those rock walls, lol.
Excellent job on this entire project. Your videos are well done and easy to follow. Was there a technical reason why you went beam to post as opposed to hanging the side beams using deck ties on the back post?
No reason other than cost. If they were visible I would have added matching ties. Hasn't presented any issues so far. Thanks for your kind words!
@@HouseholdHowTo Thanks.
Wondering why you didnt bury the posts into the concrete rather than putting the post on top of the concrete?
Hello! I mimicked your pergola for my back deck! Thank you so much! Where did you start the 1x2s on the top?
Looking to replicate, but at 17x12x12. Just making sure.....your joists are 2x8 and runners are 2x6 spaced at 16". What is your lath spacing? How many inches are your joists past the posts (on the front side)? Thanks in advance.
Nice
What joist hanger did you use for the cross beam for added support, and how did you angle it to the right angle?
Very nice.
Is the rock wall something you did, or the developer?
