You can’t go wrong with either tile. I do recommend not rushing the backsplash. Have all your cabinets finished and your countertop decor out, then decide. ❤
Does the dark moody one come in a matte finish?
The shine is what is killing me, but as your mom stated it's a personal preference. :)
Can't wait to see your final decision.
@@whitneyhatton3736 yes a Matte in that dark color tile I think would be better
Yes wait then decide! You really can tell when all the other things are done
I am with your mum on this. All nice though good luck
@@whitneyhatton3736 That’s exactly what I thought too. Try that if you can find it.
The dark, moody tile is a VIBE! Love the vertical movement, texture, and finish! That color contrasting the neutral tones👌
I’m with mom on this one. I think the dark tiles are definitely a statement, but I think they might take over the kitchen…instead of complement and be cohesive. This is a good moment to photoshop and then decide.
Can’t wait to find out what you choose!!
W
At first I thought the darker tile for that moody, modern but still depths of character kinda look, but, when your mom was explaining it just made sense! The more “rustic” tile looks more organic and fits the look of character you’re going for in your home. It’s like that plaster texture from the hood and adds more depth that way. Its also more timeless and looks more lush than that glossy dark tile. The rustic one compliments the island more instead if competing with it. Let the island, windows, pop out and be a statement on its own. It’ll make that italian stove look like it never left italy! Haha.
Love your vlogs so much
Same! Except you said it better.
Same my thoughts.
Yes, Yes Yes! Exactly what I was thinking! It just adds more texture to my way of thinking. I totally agree with your Mom.
yes yes yes yessss
I agree! But like I love moody too like what macenna said. So if only there were some slightly darker tones mixed in with the rustic ones’ tones ya know?!
I love the dark tile. The moment you picked it up in the store I thought to myself, “that’s perfect”. It provides moodiness, contrast to the oven and range hood, while complimenting the grey tones in the marble. Also, it ties in the moody vibe from the entryway, imo.
And it's not a very large area to cover it's not going all the way up the walls or anything
1000000 % agree!!!
Same! When she picks diy up in the store I though oohhhhh thissss ooooone
I like the lighter one! I usually like moody, but I think that it would be really dark on that one wall and then the rest of your kitchen would be really bright and sunny. Plus, the rustic feels sort of cottage-like to me. They would both be nice. At first I thought the dark but then your mom swayed me lol
I think the dark moody would look so beautiful with the light oven. And be a good contrast between tying in the island and lighter colors. It would make the light colors pop more 💕
Edit: Someone down below said to finish the cabinet doors first and get those up. Then photoshoot the tile in. I think that would be a great idea to see what either could look like!
I love your mom’s idea to put up a temporary board for each tile design. Wait until the all cabinets are done and live with each for a while. Look at it from a distance to get the whole composition of the kitchen.
My opinion is to go with rustic tiles, because that beautiful wood color of your boxed windows is then going to pop out. I think that if you choose moody tile, that beautiful wood color won't stand out enough... Also, I think that soapstone needs some contrast... You can always add some moody kitchen utensils and decor🧡 But, whatever you choose will be amazing, I'm sure ⭐
Exactly my thoughts!
I literally just wrote the same thing.
ABSOLUTELY! Add the moody accessories. Mixer.
I also like mom’s choice of the rustic tile. Definitely think you should get your cabinets painted and maybe just Photoshop them both in and see what works!
I personally like the dark polished tiles more than the rustic, but my first choice are the little cream squares! They'll all look stunning, but I think you have so many beautiful focal points in the kitchen like those boxed windows, the range hood and the ceilling-heigh cabinetry that maybe it's best to go with something more discreet and simple, and let the art and styling shine! Anyway, it will look fabulous so excited to see!!
The dark tile is definitely a mood! It blends the countertops up. But I feel it shadows the detail of the box window wood detailing.
The cream/grey tiles pull more of the island, similar to the wall color, keeps the space open/bright, and adds some of the same texture as the plaster from the range hood.
100% what your mom said... it's really a personal choice for you. Both are great!
Don't rush the tiling process though. You have time 😊
I agree with your mom about the natural looking tile! It’ll bring in some beautiful texture and cottage vibes. The dark tiles you’re leaning toward are a close second though for sure.
That dark tiles looks great! But i feel like the dark will compete with the rest of the kitchen and takes away from the gorgeous color or the windows... i love the one your mom agrees with ❤
I'm also leaning towards the more rustic version, but I think it makes sense to wait with the decision until the cabinett doors are up. Also: Could your mum tell us please how she is doing her hair? So pretty
I actually really like the square shape! Since you have such tall ceilings it will give a cozier, more cottage like look. I can’t decide between light and dark though, both look great in my mind but definitely wait for the cabinet doors.
I personally like the darker tile better because it's a contrast to all the lighter colors and goes really well with the darker countertop also. I can't wait to see the whole kitchen put together no matter what you choose!
Yes I think it would be such a pretty contrast over the oven especially!
I personally agree with your mom that I think the rustic tile is a little more in keeping with the comfort cottage feel. It's definitely a lot more rustic. The grey isn't a bad choice either, it's just a lot more contemporary. You had mentioned wanting to keep the kitchen light and airy, I think the dark backsplash coupled with your black island and soapstone countertops will be VERY heavy, especially from the living room.
I think your mom is right with this. The dark is moody and pretty, but it think the more stone like backsplash will add more life and texture to the kitchen! I’m absolutely in love with what you’ve done so far!!! ❤
I love moms pick, and it will add character and charm to the cottage. I feel like the darker tile is beautiful, but it brings more purple than it does brown. The other tile is going to be a visual interest and cause peoples attention to be driven to that amazing vent hood you built.
The dark tail is just BEAUTIFUL, and I think it goes with everything in the kitchen
I love the one the your mum is recommending. I think the glossy dark one will be too hard, and too dark with the dark front counter. I also think it will take away from the window frames which are stunning. The slightly more rustic and lighter ones will still help the features be features. You don't want too many "features"
I absolutely LOVE the rustic tiles! They are such a lovely texture and bring in some more color without blending in with the soapstone countertops or being too busy. I think the rustic tiles will add more character to the plain wall space as opposed to a more shiny ceramic tile. Either way! I’m sure you will make the best decision for what YOU want-which is most important❣️❣️
The rustic tile is what I imagined would go there from the beginning, even though I'm also always attracted to moody, I think in this case the rustic tiles fits the kitchen better. 🙏🏼 and also, you can get to a point in your life where you're just over the moody and dark, and wish you had gone for more lighter options in the "fixed" materials that are hard to change.
Yes! I had those same thoughts!
I love love love the dark tile with the hood of the oven staying light! It works so well with everything you’ve already picked and painted! Love these videos and how involved you let us viewers be :) it’s all turning out so beautifully!!!
I agree! especially the mirror the gray of the entryway for cohesiveness!
Agree
Love the dark one! It looks perfect with everything especially that GORGEOUS stove. Have a blessed evening 🙏💙❤🐕
Your mom is a genius! Love her idea to velcro tiles onto a sample board.
Moody entrance!! I think the moody tile is PERFECT for you and your aesthetic. The contrast is perfect for the rest of your material palette. It would also tie in so well with the entryway
I wish a blend of the two existed - I love the moodiness of the dark tiles, but I feel like the texture in the more rustic tiles gives so much more depth and interest without being busy.
I would go with your mom's pick, I am a sucker for rustic though - but those tiles speak very well with your statement windows. The contrasting color brings the windows the attention they deserve and at the same time both the windows and the tiles have that organic feel. The dark grey tiles would make the windows less noticable.
I personally prefer the creamy tile. I think that the dark tiles make it a bit difficult to see the trim on your box windows. They are truly a showstopper. The creamy tile would really help show them off.
I agree 🙈 I think the creamy square tiles or long rectangular tile gives you the polished look of the dark tile but the lighter color of the rustic tile. Like your mom said once you add all of your decor, I think it will look beautiful! You have so many amazing focal points already happening in the kitchen, like the island and the oven so I think it’s ok to go more subtle with the tile! Can’t wait to see how it comes together 🥰
Both tiles fits with everything. Only cons I see: the dark one: makes the beutiful windows dissappear a little. The rustic : it will be difficult to clean especially behind the sink and oven (grease tends to soak in into these kind of tiles).
I love the square Dutch tiles. If you are going for a more European look, than this is the perfect choice for your kitchen. You see these tiles a lot in Dutch homes from the same period as your home.
I love the moody tile. I also imagine the rustic tile kinda over grouted like the stone work on the outside of the house. I can’t wait to see which one you end up going with.
I' m pretty sure that you' re gonna choose the dark tile but I looove your mom’s choice of tile! So classy, rustic but most important timelessly beautiful.
Definitely the dark grey tiles, tiled vertically. They're organic, lovely shine and so cottagy..the marble ones are so polished and "new modern" vibe.
I like how your mom described her reasoning for the rustic as her favorite and although I agree, I also know anytime you have said "I'm doing x" and I'm on the other side of the screen going, "oh, no, MaCenna...um..." you always nail it!
Macenna please do the darker tiler I feel like it would ground the kitchen so well. The lighter tile, although beautiful, can wash out the kitchen with so much light tones but the darker tile is soooo pretty!!!
I do love the moody tile. I do however slightly prefer the rustic tile, personal taste. And call me crazy but it gives me vibes of the more natural rustic block we looked at for outside. That connection to the outside for me feels so natural and right.
The dark tile is my ultimate favorite. I agree you should complete the cabinets first and then make the ultimate decision. Your kitchen is dreamy!
This is me chanting “DARK! DARK! DARK!”
It makes your marble pop!! And really compliments the range.
Ugh it’s beautiful 😭😭
I LOVE the dark tile, all vertical in a straight line with a neutral grout. Yes. (Also textured backsplash is a pain to clean) also I can’t freaking wait for the fireplace episodes
I can see the pashmina and darker moody tile going so well together. Also vertically it will look good with the island when looking at it from the living room. It's looking super beautiful! Can't wait to see more!
I agree with your Mum! The vintage vibe of the rustic tile would be beautiful.
I’m with your momma on this one! The more organic & lighter tile seems to compliment everything else in the kitchen while the darker grey tile might overtake and overpower all the other elements. I feel that tile is meant to compliment, while you have the black island & even the black windows to make the statement, but somehow also doesn’t take away form the lighter, more airy elements within the hood, trim, & island! However, you’d make ANYTHING look amazing, so I support either decision 🤍
When you said you decided to tile the backsplash I instantly thought of a darker moodier tile, just like the one you picked. My vote is for the darker one!
I LOVE the dark moody tile. It goes with everything and works to tie in the lighter more airy stove and range with the black island so it’s not so contrasting (B&W) from the 2010s. It’s SO unique and rich!
me too, there is something really unique about the dark tile
Totally agree! I think the light would make it look like any other kitchen but the dark would be so interesting and I love the moodiness
Also team moody!
That grey dark tile would be perfection…a deep mood. The oven will POP,be the feature
Right away I loved the dark backsplash that Romeo mentioned. I agree with the mood. But in the end you always get it right.
Here’s my two cents the rustic tile blends both with the treatment you did on range hood and the colour of the island. The dark provides a backdrop to highlight these features but I do think you need to get those painted doors on so you can see the whole look before deciding because along with the windows you’re in danger of creating too many heroes. Good luck! Btw you’re my favourite RUclipsr and I’m so grateful you post so often 😊
Oooh the dark tile! With the light stove (if you’re keeping that) and light hood, I love the depth it would give!!!
I agree with your mum. The lighter rustic one makes the kitchen more cottage vibe and the grey could swing the cabinets and worktop in a more modern way. Which could class with the cottage vibe. Just a personal preference
That DARK MOODY with the antique white stove, the granite, the soap stone oh my 🫠
I'm with your Mom! I think the dark tiles are positively gorgeous! But the rustic tiles fit the style of your house more.
Vlog notification squad!

🥰🥰🥰
Yup
I love the rustic tiles that your mom said to keep in the running! I think the texture and depth to them adds so much character but is still organic. I think the moody feel could be brought in through other things like decor.
I am 100% into the dark moody tile. I think its depth is MAGNIFICENT and that the polished tile will be easier to clean/dust/wash (in my opinion). Both tiles match well! I loved your mom's suggestion to make a velcro board and live with it for a bit before choosing :)
I like both tile options but I think that the tile that your mom likes would go a lot better in your house! I think that the dark polished tile will look to perfect if that makes sense. I think your space just needs that more organic tile!
I vote for moody dark tile, great contrast and doesn’t steal the spot light for all of the other beautiful details going on in the kitchen. Plus with such a huge wall and space, it’s perfect to get away with playing with dark colors! Rustic seems a bit trendy and busy for me.
I vote dark & moody especially with the new oven color! That would be so stunning!
Both of the tiles are GORGEOUS but when you held up your moms pick (before she even picked it) I gasped. SO PRETTY - it gives old beautiful church vibes
Is there anything more perfect than an autumn day, a cup of tea, and a fresh new MaCenna Vlog?!
Aww omg love that!
Exactly! 🎉
nope! Today is my birthday and THIS is all I wanted!!
@@elizabethperry4494 Happy Birthday!!
Wait let me get the kettle on!! 🎉
Honestly LOVE the dark grey/black tiles. They not only tie in the soapstone, but also the painted wood on the island. Definitely gives a break from the light grey of the pashmina.
I love the dark tile! It gives the moody vibes and will bring out the island and cabinets! 🤍
I'm leaning toward the dark tile, but I would definitely wait to decide until all the painted door fronts are up.
I personally prefer the dark tile over the rustic one! also I have a suggestion for the cabinet doors after watching the main channel video as well - I really think that you should route a profile on all the door and drawers fronts right around the outside edge, to give that a bit of detail rather than just the square plywood. this will definitely make the doors look really really high end! would also help the drawer fronts without the shaker detail, to not be completely flat flat. hope you see this! love as always Xx
Yes! When I saw MaCenna glue the decorative piece I could hear Norm from This Old House shouting, "NO!" The center panel needs to be free to expand and contract. Your idea allows for that.
Probably have to route that detail before assembling the rails and styles.
I hope she sees these comments.
I LOVE the dark tiles 😍🖤 it brings out the dark colors throughout the island countertop and compliments the paint colors and the stove! Love, love, love!
I definitely agree with mom because I think the rustic looks more blended more into the kitchen. I really love how it looks and I feel like you can decorate more with rustic look.
Love the dark tiles , they are beautiful 😍 and seem to go so so well with the over all look of the kitchen.
Oh MaCenna Thank you…Thank you…Thank you for showing up every week. You are definitely the highlight of my Tuesday Thursday & Sunday. Your energy along with your relationship with your Mom & Romeo inspire me…Not to mention just how amazing your talents are!
Oh and your personality…I could go on & on.
O wow thank you so much! Your support means the world to me!
I think the dark tile would look GORGEOUS
I love the lightest rustic tile! I think it echoes the handmade and European home influences you liked on your trip and opens you up to add mood in more areas in paint and accessories! If you go with mood do something darker and with a color/saturation accent to it so it looks less gray and more colorful moody. If you do the moody tile though you'd have to incorporate that color accent in other places in the kitchen. With the current design you have it feels like the lightest rustic tile is the most cohesive and avoiding gray would be good.
“It could be a craft project!” I love how your mom also can’t get enough!
I like the stone looking tile. Ties in the colors of the house and the pashmina with the counters as an accent. But I also agree finishing the cabinets would give you a better viewpoint. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I think the rustic tile "moms pick"! Although the dark tile is GORGEOUS I agree with comments that it will blend in with the box windows. I think the rustic tile will complement the plaster look you did on the hood! :)
i love the dark. And I feel you have enough light, both from windows and lighting, so it won't look too dark. So exciting!
Have to agree with Mom, love the rustic. You may have to apply a mat sealer over the tile to reduce oil splashes and spots.
For your kitchen tile, I would also take into account practical aspects such as is it easy to clean? The light option that your mom liked seemed to have texture although its hard to see on camera, but if true, I imagine it would stain more easily than the polished one. Just something to consider, good luck with the decision!
MaCenna the kitchen is coming along beautifully! I agree with your mom about picking the more rustic stone backsplash. I was saying the same words before she even spoke them haha. It really encompasses the entire kitchen. And the “country vintage” vibe
The dark!!!❤ To me the rustic is TOO contrasting to the beauty and the elegance of the stove
I agree with your mom with the rustic tile .It makes the kitchen more interesting.❤
Yes! And it’ll complement the fireplace across from it!
The dark feels like a vibe and would continue that cozy wrapped in a plush blanket mood I get from the rest of the house
100% dark tile, matches your dark accents BEAUTIFULLY!!.
Otherwise if you want to go lite, as close to the wall paint as possible.
But prefer the dark for sure!!!
Loving everything your doing, so even if you go completely different, I know it will be amazing 😊
Oh yes, Romeo's right. The way the lines mimic the lines in the wood. He's got some real design sense.
I like the moody tile but I think it would look very pretty herringboned!😍❤️
Oh that'd be gorgeous 😍
Yasss!!!
Agreed!
Agree it would be pretty, but a lot more difficult.
Do the dark! It's so dramatic yet simple and really compliments the other colors throughout the kitchen and house as a whole
Dark & Moody definitely!!! Such a contrast & elegant!!!
Those dark tiles are dreeeeeamy. And with the brass hardware? Oof. It’s like a Dark Academia cottage feel and I’m all for it. 😍
Both of the tile options are so good ❤️ You could always photoshop a picture of what each backsplash option might look like as a whole to get a quicker idea of what it will look like. That’s how I always make design decisions before I do something I regret lol
I am in LOVE with the dark tile! ❤ It’s so good with the range hood too!
the dark moody tile is BEAUTIFUL
the dark tile is the move! it will provide the statement that will go with the hood and tie in the island! The other one is more cottagey but the dark is more macenna and will be so good with everything you gravitate towards to decorate the living room
Your mom is literally having the same conversation I was having in my head. I personally was leaning with the white tiles, but as soon as you said that it “simply looks like a backsplash”…? I understood and agreed with you. I love how in the end, your mom’s support is beautiful, respectful, and encouraging! Thank you for sharing these moments with us! I honestly am so excited to see as you progress in making this your home! 💕
My vote is for the dark tile. At first glance I never would have chosen something like that, but I think it’s makes the style lean a little more Victorian moody than country cottage which is my vibe. Both tile options are great though! I know you’ll style it well either way!
Personally I love the textured tile more, I think it adds some light to all the dark, while still keeping it moody. Like your Moms painting of the white flowers that you love.
I agree with your mom... the rustic tile will give the kitchen some texture. Everything right now is a solid pattern except for the countertop. A moody color will look nice but I like that the island already gives you that.
I agree with your mom in this situation! My first instinct was the rustic tile because I love the character & the texture it adds. But after seeing the dark tile!! It's absolutely beautiful too, and it brings the moodiness of the entryway into the kitchen. Either way I don't think you can go wrong!
Dark tiles all the way! Works so well with the soapstone, and gives you a bit of dark color when viewing the kitchen from farther away!
I think an overgrouted stone backsplash would look great and add a ton of that country cottage character.
I looove the moody feel of the dark tile and the contrast you’ll have but I think your mom has a very valid point!! I’d say will till you have the cabinets completed!
Hi MaCenna, if you see this I wanted to say - as a 30 year old that loves to do everything herself and building things but suffers from chronic depression, your videos are a huge reminder of the creative and hardworking part of me that is hard to access when I'm not doing well. Thank you for reminding me of who I am and what I am capable of, this disease makes those things very hard to hold on to sometimes. You're a true inspiration and motivation to me, and I know I'm not the only one. Thank you.
💕💕💕
^ echoing this. I feel this 100%
I wish you well. Sending you greetings from NYC! Get well.
Stay strong & positive! You got this! 💕
I felt this in my soul!!!
