We’ve spent the last few months transforming an old bathroom into the kitchen of our dreams and even though we’ve made loads of progress, the kitchen still isn’t very functional - so this week we are focusing on organization and function AND adding a bit more style.

Personally I think you should finish your cabinets and then paint them, to then decide your backsplash because they are both pretty and I too love mood and I’m struggling 😅

I also thought about cleanability. Those shinier tiles look like they would clean better, and I love the dark moodiness of them. Does everything need to be matte? I think a bit of shine would offset the other surfaces and really pop :) But I would also wait and see the other things in place too before I decide!

Totally agree. The finished cabinets would likely determine which tiles look best.

My two cents: if you’re going with the black tile backsplash (my favorite). I’d lay it in herringbone or subway to keep a more classic look because the black tile itself is very modern. If you go with the natural stone, lay it vertical like you want to bring a more modern look to the rustic tile. ❤

For the kitchen stools, would you consider adding cushions to raise the seating height a couple inches? It could be cute to choose the fabric and be able to change them up for holiday/seasonal decor!

Use the black tile in a herringbone pattern above the stove and the other tile as a border and for the rest of the entire backsplash

Love this idea! I'd also steer clear of castors on hardwoods especially on a frequently moved/used piece like a kitchen stool. There's always the chance that they could damage the flooring

Also i think adding the dark tile will "force" your eyes to stop and look at the kitchen and not let your eyes wander through out the other spaces ( dining room for ex. ) since other space is so light

I definitely think the dark tile is the way to go! The shiny should be easier to clean, the mood is so right, and personally I think the modernity will play well in contrast without being too modern. Love your videos so much! I say second tile (more rustic & textural) all the way!!
Once your cabinet fronts are up and the range is in, that tile will compliment all the elements while still bringing that visual interest. Sure, its not as straight up moody but after seeing the variations in the two samples you have, imagining it all tiled with its different variations with an overgrouted look would bring that moodiness in a subtle but more organic way. It’ll compliment the plaster in the hood too. It just goes with the style of the home more, it’s organic, interesting in texture that brings you in and warm.
The glossy tile is moody right off the bat but imagining big picture all tiled up, I feel the gloss will compete with all the things, and be a little too modern.

I think the dark and moody one is nice. It looks like it will be easier to wipe down and maintain, also.

I vote for the darker backsplash, mainly because of ease of cleaning. Backsplashes are a great way to add visual interest and texture, but don't forget the primary reason is to keep your walls clean. The shiny finish makes it a breeze to clean.

The lighter tiles fit your aesthetic much more than the dark shiny tile (that said, if the dark tile were honed that would be the best pick) Edit: As for the casters, I would get silicone wheel casters because it will not beat up your beautiful floors

Painting the cabinets and then making a decision is a good idea. I personally love the stone/organic tile because it gives a cottage look that goes really well with the house. It would have variation and texture that would make it more lived in? I think it would look very pretty

I love the more rustic tile! especially because you have warmth with the window frames, and I think the darker tones in some of the tiles will still add some moody-ness (vs. more consistent lightness). Plus rustic is a mood, right? 😂

Definitely the darker shiny tile. It's easier to wipe clean if cooking makes a mess. And it's also prettier in this context.

i love the dark tile!! and i assume it will be easier to clean, specially above the range with all the cooking, things get very greasy. with the white tile, i think the grease will stick and i cannot imagine the hassle of cleaning tomato sauce off it. though it’s a beautiful tile. idk, something to think about :)

Tile option I choose is #2 - rustic look - matches the aesthetic of the cottage more. You can add moodiness with art and other decor.

Dark and moody (and shiny - the light will interact with them and create its own kind of texture - also contrasts with the matte tones) 😍

The lighter one for sure, more timeless. The dark feels like it will get more dark/depressing than cozy in the long run--especially with the dark island

I still LOVE the more rustic tiles!! 100% my fave and I think they are gorg in that kitchen- add a super sexy grout to bring in that mood that you love so much!!
If you DO go with dark, I think it’ll look great with a lighter grout, to help bring in the other tones- it looked really good when you held them up and there was the gap in between where the light paint came through.
Either tile is gorgeous. I vote rustic!

Personally, I love the organic tile which I think compliments every other element of the kitchen! I think the darker tile would draw your eye to it, of course, but could almost take over the space, neglecting the other beautiful more organic elements like the soapstone, cabinets, and other pretty pieces you will put in the space. I think you can absolutely bring in the mood you're looking for through artwork, pottery, and other pieces as you decorate the kitchen, while still having that cohesive organic look through that lighter, more textured tile!

Dark tile for sure. Wheels on stools sounds dangerous to me. Love your channel. I’m retired and handicapped so I won’t ever attempt any building or remodeling, however I am addicted to watching your videos. I admire your skills and determination. Your shopping day with your mom reminds me of all the fun my mom and I had. Miss her so much. Thanks for sharing your life and projects. ❤️

What I found useful when building the drawers is: to attach drawer side pieces to the slides that are also attached to the cabinets and then measure the exact distance you need to cut front and back of the drawer. Since you have several drawers per cabinet you can do it once per cabinet :)

I think the dark backsplash will bring that moody look you love and won’t take away from your other beautiful features (wood trim, counters, range, etc). The more rustic tile has varying colours from one tile to the next that will make the backsplash look very busy and almost randomly checkerboard-ish as the contrast of each tile is so different from one another whereas the dark tile is more cohesive and not too varied. I think it will look 1000x better with the dark choice.

  • @beautifulsoul7093

Def choice 2! The natural stone is so much more cottage. The shiny dark grey would combat the statement piece of the dark island.

Definitely go for the lighter matt finish tile, it'll look soooo much better. I feel that the darker shiny tile will take away from your dark windows so much.
Also the casters would be good 😍 but get locking casters so you can stop them rolling! x

I agree! The dark tile will make that whole center section too dark with the windows. The lighter tile will showcase the window boxes and make them the focal point of that wall.
