First video I've seen where an operator of chainsaws has chaps/pants with them to use while camping. Kudos to you. It's not hard and could save a limb. Well done for presenting the safety and indicating its not hard to achieve. Cheers and enjoy your camping adventures.
G'day Tim, Yeah mate, the chainsaw pants are a must. Just incase that chains breaks. Thanks a lot for your feedback, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim, I hope it’s ok to speak here. After 14 months of building my 200 series to be able to let a one legged man (me) go solo camping has arrived. All those videos of yours I watched and rewatched to shape my cruiser to suit me. Well today I am speaking to you from the cape. Tagged on with some guys that never met and we did 1/2 the Tele track with 3 water crossings…. Tomorrow is the obligatory picture from the top then head back. I know people are in lockdown down south and I do send them by sincere wishes and support through this time but the timings came together so I packed the car and just went. Wow!!! Never done anything like this before. If you put a heart rate monitor on me when we crossed the Cockatoo River I would sent it of the dial. Many many thanks for your videos, your live chat shows, just love them. Thanks again Tim.
G'day mate, I hope to get back up the Cape some day. Cockatoo Crossing can be a challenge thats for sure. Im glad that you are having a great trip. Stay safe mate. Cheers Tim.
After 45 years you still like it simple. SO friggin inspiring mate, I am sick of all the crap people take for convenience to make them feel like home. Whats the point of camping then right?
Thanks mate. Yeah i do like a simple set up, but im not missing anything that i wish i had. More time to enjoy the camp spot, and not spend a lot time to set up and pack up. I appreciate your feedback. Cheers Tim
The best advice from an absolute legend of the Australian bush. Simple really is best. A quick and easy set up means more time to enjoy life out in theis great country of ours.
Gday mate, Ya can’t beat a simple camping setup, and still have a great camping experience. Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback mate. Greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim
When I first started out, I had a swag, 12 dollar chair, 20 buck gas camp stove in case, billy, frying pan and tarp. That was 20 years ago. Now i'm married and have a dodgy back its Oz tent and queen size blow up mattress and all the bells and whistles lol. Good times mate.
Thats all cool mate. Sometimes changes go on later in life. It's great that you are still getting out and enjoying the Aussie bush. Thanks a lot for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Great message mate. With all the gear and all the money these days, people have forgotten about a nice simple setup. It’s a crying shame. Great message. Matt
Gday Matt, Yeah spot on mate. A lot of people see all the latest and greatest and generally expensive, and they think you need all that to go camping. When you sure don’t. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Nice one Batesy. I always live by the saying “you get what you pay for”, if I can’t afford something I’ll just wait & save my money until I can afford it.
G'day Phil, Yeah mate, thats pot on. You sure do get what you pay for. Saving up mate until you can get that bit better quality gear will save you money down the track. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Well spoken Tim. Ive been camping for a similar period and have similar set up (Except my swag is on a stretcher bed! LOL). The thing was when i started out there was a limited supply of camping accessories and gear, so you made do with the basics and it became habit.
Thats spot on mate. When my camping days began in Scouts. Camping way back then was very basic. Old habits never go away. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Great video as usual tim. I made a solar shower made from Pvc Pipe and strap it to the roof. Fits 24 litres of water and painted black it absorbs some heat if its a sunny day. On the filler cap ive tapped in a tyre valve. Pump him upto 20 PSI and get plenty of pressure coming out the hose end.. Wifey and i can both shower for 2 nights including her washing her hair. Simple but works good! Can also add a billy or 2 of boiling water for those extra cold days!
+1 for Southern Cross tents, Tim. Not fashionable, but simple and quick. Much lighter than an RV tent and could go in the back of the Patrol or on the roof. Plenty of room to stand up, or put a chair if the weather turns foul. Top quality, made in Bayswater with Australian canvas.
G'day Sam, Thanks very much for that. I didn't even think about SC for tents, only thought about them for swags. I will c heck out the tent range for sure and yes all Aussie made. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim
Sometimes my camp has 3 items to set up, awning, table & chair. Other times, it's literally zero items thanks to setting up my patrol with a single bed in it. Good tips for the beginners 👍
G'day Tim, I confess to carrying too much stuff, but I do like your KISS approach. I have a pump up 5L pressure pack (like a weed sprayer) for the shower - cheap, simple and no power needed. I carry it half full and just add hot water. I have a Small gas cylinder converted to a fire pit - works well for one or two people, doesn't need much wood or take up much space, can still cook on it, and it doesn't take much water to extinguish fire. Always great to see other's ideas and set up - Thanks!
G'day Bruce, I have had a few replies with the same shower setup that you have. Sounds very simple and no power required which is great. I must have a look at that option. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Great setup Tim thanks for the video. I camp out of a small hatchback so am a bit limited for space. Swag, esky, chair and table plus a box for cooking, first aid and tools. Those heavy duty tubs look great! Thankyou for the ideas, love the videos.
cheers mate thanks for sharing great set up for one i do some solo trips around the islands Fraser ,Morton d/island Bribie sometimes i get an itch to go and the bride can't come with me i have a Aus tent 30 sec ,20 sec or 40 ill tell you something I'm 60 yrs old and i love it easy quick and it keeps the rain off you will love one as well .the best thing is you can stand up in it.cheers from Queensland south .
Gday Glen, Thanks mate. I’ve been to Fraser a couple of times. I so want to come back some day and head straight for Sandy Cape. Love it up there. I have one of those Oz tents. I’ve got the RV3. Quick and easy to setup. I’m the same age next month mate. Lol. Thanks for your feedback and for dropping in from Queensland. Cheers Tim
G'day Sam, Yeah mate, simple camping setups are the go if you can make them work for your style of camping. Thanks mate for your feedback, i greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
Hey Tim, love your videos mate! We try to keep our set up pretty simple. I go camping with my young kids regularly so have a tent rather than a swag. We have a 4 man tent with a tarp over the top for weekends away and a much larger three room Black Wolf tent and pergola when camping with the whole family. A table and a box full of kitchen utensils including a coffee plunger is essential. Also for the campfire we just use a cast iron dutch oven with tripod and also a flat skillet. We did pick up a basket for cooking marinated chicken wings and also we never forget the all important marshmallow forks. Happy camping!
G'day Rob Thats ace mate that your kids are keen on camping. It sure is a great family time away. Your setup sounds simple, but has everything that you need to be comfortable. Cant beat the camp oven mate for cooking up big meals for the family. Thanks a lot mate for your reply. Cheers Tim
Less is more I reckon. When I started I had a bare bones Patrol and a swag. Used to go through Mansfield ,get some ice in the Esky and comfortably spend 1 or 2 days in the hills. Had a blast !! Nowdays I can't do without lockers , fridge , awning , solar panels , heated chairs ... Lol 🤣. As for the tent, I own a RV4 , and it's been through hell and back and it's been great ! Some advice though. If you go down that route. Definitely invest in the fly for it. More weather protection and keep the dew at bay. And more obvious thing is , it will be colder in there than a swag. I swag it in cooler months and Oztent warmer months. The air flow in them tents is awesome. 👍
G'day mate, Spot on mate about less is more. Couldn't agree more. heated chairs mate. How do they work? Lol Thanks a lot for your feedback on the RV4 that you have. I know a few people with those tents, and they said the same thing about getting the fly to go over the top. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
my 2 cents on the shower, I’ve got one of the rechargeable 12v showers from kickass, no messy cords do deal with, just drop it in your bucket and your good to go, takes up no room at all
Tim. I will guarantee you, if you get a Glind shower type system set up, you will never look back. Have it plumbed to the bullbar with a marine grade switch so you don't have to even pop the bonnet. By far one of the best additions to my set-up. Hot water in any conditions. As far as a 30 sec tent. No such thing. Any companies claiming super quick set ups I look at with caution. If your referring to those OzTents I'd highly recommend you check them out first which I'm sure you already have and are aware of them. They are huge!!!!! By the time you get them off the roof, out of the bag, folded out, awning up, poles and all pegs in place you could probably do your swag two time over. If not three. Like anything canvas they are very hot in summer. You really need to set up a good silver reflective tarp for it to be cool and properly waterproof. Keep what you've got but get out of that swag and into a flip out Stretcher Swag like the Jet Bunker. I have a Dune version (identical imo and heaps cheaper) and it combined with a no expenses spared SIM, they are by far the best sleep I ever have had in my 40 odd years of camping. I have the Exped MegaMat 10XLW. Not cheap but worth every dam cent. Cheers. 🙂
My camping is just as basic as yours nice and simple that's by myself now I have a family I gotta take extra with me. I agree with the chainsaw pants I take mine just incase you never know what can happen when your alone but I barely wear them way to heavy. Keep up the great work
G'day Chris, Thats the go mate. Simple setups are quick and easy to setup and pack up. Such a relaxing way to go camping, thats for sure. The chainsaw pants are a must i reckon, slash your leg in a remote location and ya buggered. Safe than sorry is the go. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
G'day mate, Absolutely, a simple setup is the go. That video is a few years old now and my camping gear setup hasn't changed a bit from that video. Thanks heaps for your feedback. Cheers Tim
G'day Michael, The trailer build sounds like a top idea if you can make it yourself. That way you get what you want that suits your camping style. Ya cant beat cooking on the campfire, it's the best. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Great vid mate showing people who are new to camping and perhaps some who have been out a few times that you don't need all the latest toys and the proverbial kitchen sink to get out and enjoy our beautiful country - also great to see you give some much needed pointers on toilet basics. Keep up the great work Batesy cheers mate.
G'day John, Yeah mate, you sure don't need all of the latest and greatest gear to go camping. Start with a simple setup and build it up to suit the style of camping that you enjoy. Thanks heaps for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
G'day Tim. My setup has varied over the years and I still remember the fun I had with minimal equipment. These days health makes me have to be a bit more comfortable otherwise I couldn't get out into this great country. I have cut down as much as I can, and either use a forward fold camper or a caravan, depending on location. Love your channel mate. Cheers.
G'day mate, Thats the go, camping is all about a setup that works for you and not someone else. Thats great you have got a camping setup that helps you to get out and enjoy the peace and quiet of the Aussie bush. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Cracking video mate with brilliant advice. My setup is pretty much what you have excluding the chainsaw, gas stove cast iron cookware. I like to keep my setup simple cooking on butane stove (its slow) & not being seen by others that might be passing. Shower. You might want to think about using a 5/10Lt garden pump pressure spray unit. Mix some hot water with the cold.
Great setup Tim. I like the way that you’ve cut weight out of your GU and simplified your gear list.I like to set up my tarp(6x7mtrs) when I go up the Victorian bush.Being a hunter I often need my 4x4 to be independent of my camp setup as I like to explore different parts of the bush during the day.A quality tarp is a bonus when Mother Nature throws some wild weather your way.I’m busy packing for 4 days up high this weekend.I can’t wait.Cheers, Rob.
G'day Rob, Yeah mate, i have taken around 300kgs of weight out of the back of my Patrol. Makes a massive difference. It's handy being able to leave your camp setup while you head out for the day. You have a great trip when you head away on the weekend. Could be some snow coming later this week. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
The Zd30 made me rethink my set up. My campsite has gone from 45mins to set up to around 8mins. I go on a lot more trips now and am happier not having to worry about it if rains or packing up. Less is More!
Thats the go mate. If your camp setup is quick and easy to put up. You will go camping a lot more, thats for sure. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Gee wiz Tim, you and I are similar blokes. I run a small bricklaying gang (over 30 yrs) and also have a love for the Aussie bush and rain forests. I have a similar setup and the same chair! I'll be up the Vic high country this weekend, ch 53 if you're about. Tony
G'day Tony, Yeah i ran my own brickie gang for 25yrs and now my last trowel is in my camp box for flipping eggs Lol Simple setup is the go and works really well for me mate. Not heading for the High Country this weekend, bound to catch you on the tracks some day. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim
Love the KISS principle! My setup is very similar to yours. I have a battery-powered shower setup, it drops into a bucket and Volare instant shower, for me, it works well. oh and don’t forget a small foam mat to stand on while showering. Very impressed you use chap/chainsaw pants. As you say they are a must-have. Two "extra" bits of kit l take are a wedge in case my chain saw gets jammed or pinched and small wooden camp stool that I use as a side table for my G&T's and cheese board....... Any fool can be unfortable
Gday David , Yeah the simple approach to camping gear works well. Good shower setup mate. Always wear the chaps, a broken chain on the chain saw. Bites to much. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
G'day Mick, Thanks mate. I think the RV 3 will be a good size for what im after. But, i will be checking out some other branded tents also. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
G'day Craig, Thats the same size tent im thinking of. I'll c heck out the shower options mate. I hope you can get out and use your new gear soon. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Gday Tim My 30 second tent is the RV1, Its big enough for 2 really but i bought it for the pack up size. Its small enough to fit back tray of the twin cab, all the bigger ones required to go on the roof and they are quite heavy too. Great quality though and the awnings on them a re great, i have all the walls if i camp longer and you cant beat the set up on them. Cheers
G'day Paul, Yeah mate, if i end up getting one. Im thinking the RV3 would be a good size for me. But, as you say it will need to go up on my roofrack each time. Im also looking at other branded tent options. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Shovel: otherwise known as "portable dunny pole" 😂 Must have kit. In regards to simplicity. I like my tubs now (thanks Tim for the great idea). 👍🏽When I camp by myself I just take the bare essential stuff like sleeping arrangement, cooking (and eating), shelter and food storage.
Hahah Lol The shovel has a few names and a few uses. Handy tool to take away camping. Yeah mate, the tubs are great, better than heavy drawers. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures I like the idea of being simple camping. Big drawers, electronic gadgetry, etc takes away the original core of what camping is all about. I used to recommend friends what I think they need to get started camping. But now I make them ask themselves this question, "would you see yourself camping often?".
@@Triple-N Thats it mate. I took my drawers out due to the weight. It's very handy being able to take all of my camping gear out when i get home from a trip. Top idea getting your friends to work out what gear they need to go camping, otherwise they end up with a lot of gear they don't really need.
Hi Tim. Same setup here, well over the other side of 40... Swag, stretcher, 270° Awning, chair with table (essential), Bunnings table. 5 as well. Never had a 30 second tent and never would. Mate traveled with one and we all laughed every time he set it up... Not 30 seconds, Heavy, pain in the ass thing. When its wet it's wet forever. Covered in dirt, PITA to lift on and off roof rack. Try the stretcher option for the swag mate. Nice to sit on the edge and put your britches and boots on. By the way, just got the 134 boxes from your vides, NICE upgrade from the Bunnings tubs. Thanks
G'day mate, Yeah i know a few people with those 30 sec tents. They are heavy to get back on the roof. I just dont wont to be towing a camper just yet. See what happens down the track with a tent. Thanks heaps mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Great vid mate when I was younger I slept in the cars and trucks either just on backseat or in the patrols on an air bed but recently brought a Jayco camper and loved just the back said no winding for so I traded that and brought a full size caravan but finding poor workmanship on a repair has taken nearly 16mth to get it fixed but I think I have finally found a great caravan repairer that I won’t be letting go of lol but I’m thinking of going back to the air bed in the y62 for weekend travels to get out more
G'day mate, Thats no good about the issues you have going on with your caravan. I hope you get it sorted out soon. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Great and simple set up mate. The only thing i have changed lately is i have gone 36v Makita chainsaw. I love that i dont have to carry the extra fuel. I still love the basic camp set up. Cheers for the video mate 👍🇦🇺🍺❤
When I take the kids there’s a lot more I just bought a joolca setup it’s awesome for hot showers and turns into a kitchen sink to wash up all your dishes the girls where not to keen on digging holes 🕳 to go to the toilet 🚽 so the shower awning doubles as a toilet and I bought a portable one yet to test it out yet I have a soft top ARB RTT and on my own it’s bit to hard to pack up get back into the cover so in future going to grab a hardtop one for sure I just bought a new swag for myself kids love there swag can’t beat them for quick setup and easy light weight when packed up depending where we go I’ve got a few cast iron pots that I take and just got a spun steel one to try out love all your camp fire cooking I’ve learnt so much hopefully this covid stops so we can get out of this lockdown and go explore thanks again Tim
G'day mate, Yeah when your family goes camping you will need more gear. But thats great that your family are keen to go out camping. Swags are great, very handy and simple to setup. Thanks a lot for all of your feedback. I will look into shower options down the tracks. Cheers Tim.
It depends on what I'm doing as to how basic I go. Sometimes it's as simple as my swag (also stretcher since having both knees replaced) and bedding, something to cook on and with and my Esky. Otherwise it's an instant up tent, stretcher/bedding, stove and an instant up gazebo (sometimes), chair and table, gooking gear. Hubby won't let me have a pullout awning on the car. He doesn't camp so doesn't think it's needed. :/ My tent setup is 15 minutes total with everything set up. I don't reckon you need much to be comfy, so long as you can get a good feed and have a decent sleep then all is good.
G'day Jenny, Thats the go, just setup your camping gear that works for you. Simple and comfortable is the go for sure. Awning are a must i reckon for going camping. They provide so many options when it comes to the weather. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim
Drove 3 hours from east Gippsland for a camp above Licola and forgot my chair. Nearly cried. But $15 at the store there and all was sweet.. magnificent weekend..
G'day Shane, Yeah, thats not good leaving the camp chair at home. Good thing the Licola store could help you out with a back up chair. Glad you still had a top weekend. Cheers Tim.
Gday Tim, I went down the path of the oztent RV1 a year or so ago. Mainly that model because it’s the smallest when packed up. Ive got a stretcher which fits perfectly in the tent which increases the amount of storage internally but recently just started rolling my swag inside the tent without putting the hoop up. When staying in places a bit longer I like the extra protection from the elements and the fact all my clothes are with me inside. Also the oztent has a good size awning out the front to put all my camp gear under, leaving my car free to drive and get wood etc.
Gday Graeme, Yeah I’m maybe looking at the rv3 for that extra room inside. Bit heavier than your tent. See how things pan out down the track. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim
@@timbates4wdadventures Hi Tim, at the recent Caravan/Camping show in Sydney on display was a RV2 (new size). Bigger than RV1 and smaller than RV3. Looked good. Will be available in August,
I have a darche soft roof top tent and it only weights 55kgs, it’s great for times when your travelling and stopping over night, it’s fairly quick to unpack. Also we have a ground tent in a pyramid shape and that’s better for when we have pulled up for a few days. Only issue is carrying a mattress around where the rooftop has it contained. Also they make shower awnings that might be the go for ya too.
Yeah a shower unit would be pretty mint especially to keep the misses happy haha I was look at one of those 30seconds but because of the pack up length and not having a roof rack on my hilux. I ended up going the black wolf 240 turbo tent. Which fits neatly in the tray, but the RV 30second tent would be ideal for your patrol Cheers Marty
G'day mate, Yeah the pack of the 30sec tents is an issue im finding out. I am also looking at other tent brands since making this video. Thanks mate for your reply and feedback. Cheers Tim.
Another good video tim, I like simple as well and items like my chainsaw, shovel and Engel fridge are always with me, my swag and chair, my camp ovens plus a small gas bbq like yours and my axe. Have to pick your brain at some stage regarding go pros as I’m thinking about getting one
G'day Billy, Thanks mate. Simple setups are the go. You sure don't need much to be comfortable while out camping. Yeah cool mate. They are handy little cameras. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.
I'd recommend a Southern Cross Tent. We've had one for 20 years, tough as boots. Australian made in Melbourne, all tough canvas. Peg out 4 corners, one pole in the centre up as quick as an umbrella). Puts up with any weather and folds up so much more compact than a 30 second tent (which I bet is made overseas. Just our experience!! I'd recommend checking out their website.
G'day Kerry, Someone else also mentioned Southern Cross. I didn't think about them for tents, only swags. I will have a look for sure. Yours folds up smaller than a 30sec tent. Thats interesting to know. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures we had a 30 second tent, try packing it up in 30 seconds.....sold it but was good for interior space. The knuckles were a bit average for quality. The one mentioned here is good, just the central pole but if you're on you're own no probs setting up a bed inside and getting comfy. We had similar and plenty of the tour companies use them due to set up time and space taken when packed. Worth a look if changing from a swag.
Can't beat the quality. Folds up to just over a metre square. It folds around the square frame of the roof. It's really quick to do, husband gets me to do that part, so easy. You could chuck it in the 4wd or on the roof. They are fantastic in wind, no bending joints, just real old school tough parts. Great headroom too. We can fit both of us and our grown kids, but we have comfort of just the two of us now on stretchers. Heaps of room. For you, you could fit just your self and your table in the bad weather. Very versatile. They can customise your tent too, we have windows that zip open from the inside, from heavy canvas, they are excellent. Also have optional PVC windows that zip on the outside so you can look out when it's raining and to give light. A bit fancy, but useful! Love your videos, wish we could camp as often as you. We are based in Adelaide. Kerry
G'day Glenn, Thats the go mate with a small trailer. Take it off when you get to camp and leave it behind when you head out for the day. Thanks mate for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Great content tim, the chainsaw is an essential and potentially a lifesaving item when camping in the high country. I can recommend the oztent RV range for longer stays! 👍
Agree, rv3 would replace your extra awning, good tent! Plus use a basic swag to keep mattress and bedding quick and easy. The worst thing about a tent is forever rolling sleeping bags. One tip, the tent will be a bit colder than the swag.
@@12321bennyg Top idea mate with the side walls. Plus I've seen some people set them up at the back of their 4Wd, and the front awning on the tent covers the back doors. Thanks for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
@@affleckempire3588 Great feedback thanks mate. Yeah, im wondering about the tent being a bit colder at night than my swag. Im never cold in my swag. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim, simplest gear is better always l don’t like high technology settings at rear station wagon. I have the same set 30years and more than happy. Very good show.
Can’t beat an electric chainsaw Tim! Plenty of power and the battery lasts more then long enough. No need to carry stinky unleaded. 30 sec tents are good but heavy. I’ve seen plenty of comments here recommending other things Shower tent, whether a roof rack mounted or just a pop up ensuite. I don’t bother with a tent if the MRS isn’t coming. Get a lithium rechargeable drop in pump. Charge while you’re driving and take up no room. Keep it up tim Cal
G'day Cal, Yeah the elec chain saws are becoming more and more popular. Plenty of benefits for them over the petrol chainsaw. I will look into some of the other tent options. Thanks for your reply and feedback on your shower setup. Cheers Tim.
I have seen some with a water setup in their vehicle with pcv piping filled with water and pressurised by tyre inflator. They’ve attached a shower head for washing.
A cheap thing to make for toilet paper. Get a bit of 100mm pvc pipe and 2 caps . Cut pipe to length of a dunny roll plus 15mm. Jam caps on keeps ya bog paper dry and clean . Cheers pat
Nice setup young Tim,very tricky to plan what to take on camp trips because of the weight factor,l have a 4 d cell battery shower head which l drop in a bucket of warm water for a shower. I bring my farm boss 230 chainsaw everywhere l go and need a handy bag like yours, where abouts do you you store that and what time do you go too bed. The log splitter is the only thing l miss and don't bring on my big trips up here in cane toad country.
G'day Greg, My whole setup is based around weight, only take what i need for any size camping trip. The battery shower sounds like the go mate. The bag i have the chain saw in, is just an old camp chair bag. It's so much better that the big box i had. Watch out for those cane toads mate, you dont want them getting in ya swag at night. Lol Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
I use compaq cookers that use Propane cylinders which also power my shower heater. Also, we just did 18 days living out of a double swag with no problems.
Awesome Batesy. My setup is nearly identical to yours - less is more! I've learnt a few good tips from you like using plastic containers! I ditched my 2 stroke chainsaw for a Ryobi 18v battery powered one. It's awesome for basic firewood cutting and the occasional tree down over the track, and with two 5Ah batteries I can use one and recharge one - gets about 30 minutes running time per battery. And I'm a bit of a tech nerd, I take a battery powered AM/FM/SW radio and late at night I love trying to listen to rdio stations from a long way away in Oz. With the right atmospherics I can pickup SW stations broadcast from Asia region too, and I'm in southern NSW. I'd be keen to know if you take a first aid kit? I've just got a basic St John Ambulance motorist one, I'm thinking of getting something a bit more comprehensive.
G'day mate, Less is more alright. Simple camp setup means more time for relaxing. Thats great you have found some of my videos helpful; mate. The containers sure do help with packing food for a camping trip. I still have my petrol chainsaw, one day i might go to the battery option. I do have a first aid kit mate, i have a couple. One setup for snake nits the other for general purpose first aid. St Johns have a great range of first aid kits, they would be worth checking out. Thanks mate for your reply, i appreciate your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Hi Tim, I know you have said “no rooftop tent for me” before, but I have used the tents on the ground and now I use a Darche rooftop, I have weighed it with bedding in at 60kg , I have it mounted so I can winch it off into my shed roof area , I never have ants up north or get cold, the 30 sec Oztent 3 is 21kg a single stretcher is 7kg plus the bedding, so the rooftop is only a 28ish kg weight penalty for the big trips, but in the warmer months the ventilation is amazing, Don’t get me wrong, I like swags , but for the $1200 for a Oztent 3 with stretcher, against the same for a R-top for desert or sand trips 👍, swag for the High county because of hight clearance 👍 , If I could only get the Lady to swag in the HC 😂
Gday mate, I greatly appreciate your numbers on the weight of a roof top tent vs OzTent. The weight factor for me is only one reason I’ll still never own a RTT. All roof storage is take up. Climbing up & down ladders Have to pack up every time I want to go for a drive Extra fuel usage with wind drag I know they work for so many people, but I’ll never be one of those. Lol. I’m Looking at other tent options that are much lighter as well. Plus, in a tent I will still sleep on the ground without a stretcher. Thanks again mate. Cheers Tim.
i use the swag uder the awning for 1-2 dayers. but have a 4 person airtent for 2 days or more, far better as you get older, even if it takes 30 min to set up haha
Great setup mate for the trips you do. As long as it works for you, that’s a great setup. We all change our camp setups as get older. Even I have. Cheers Tim
Pretty good advice tim. My set up is pretty much the same except I’m getting a porta potti and privacy tent soon. Had enough of digging holes. The tent also can be for the shower or getting dressed
G'day Gary, I also have a porta loo at home. I could also use that in the shower tent i guess. The shovel is handy, but a porta loo would be great for the longer trips. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
I got a toilet that folds flat into a bag, weighs 5kg and can handle 200kg. 85 bucks, beats squatting over a hole at 5am after too many beers and undercooked meat lol
Yeah mate, my setup sure wont work for families. You will need a lot more camping gear than what i have. It's great that family likes to get out camping mate. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
It's funny you mention the 30 second tents You've really inspired me to look at the weight of the gear I'm taking with me and I want to get a 30 second tent too (oztent rv3) because that will replace my awning and swag. If it wasn't so long it would let me remove my roof rack (all its being used for is my awning and it's 50kg!!) But unfortunately I need the roof rack to transport it. I might look into getting the 2 or 3 bar style roof rack which is around 10kg and selling my awning (will always keep the swag) but if it wasn't for the length, I think the rv3 would make much more sense to a lot of people
Gday Josh, Yeah, weight reduction of camping gear is vital. You can certainly reduce a lot of camping gear weight if you look outside the box from what most people use. I’ve ended up getting the RV3 tent. Quick and very easy to setup. I use mine for longer trips. I will always have my swag for some of the shorter over nighters. It’s great you are thinking about reducing the weight of your camping gear with a few gear changes. Top stuff mate and thanks for your feedback Cheers Tim
Oh nice! What are your thoughts on the build quality, would you buy it again and is it easy to load onto the roof? You can get really technical with it in terms of wind resistance too, the rv3 would have much less wind resistance on the roof vs a swag. I'm still not sure if I'll get an rv3 or keep the swag but I like the idea of trying new things in order to potentially find a better camping solution. The weight saving is good too
@@JoshSinnott97 Build quality is good mate. They do have a good reputation from others that use their tents. I have rollers at the back of my roof rack, so getting it up and down from the roof is really quite easy. I will never not use my swag. But some longer trips planned for this year, i will take the RV3 for sure.
Cheers mate, it's good to hear from a real owner rather than relying on reputation sometimes That's cool, is that a product wedgetail make or did you make another product fit your roof rack?
Gday Ann, I had my extension sheet made by a motor trimmer. When it’s setup out straight, it comes out 3mtrs from where it connects the roll up awning. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.
G'Day Tim, I love your videos, Well I've been shopping in lockdowns, LOL. Waiting for the rain to finish so i can see if it all fits in to my car. i basically, upgraded from esky to 12V system. One thing, I have never camped by myself, usually with mates or family, how do you find it? Mark
G'day Mark, Going from the esky which i think we all started out with and then now using the 12 volt fridge, it's a game changer thats for sure. Solo camping is unreal. I just like to peace and quiet. Its amazing what you hear when it's just you. Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim
Great video cheers appreciate it. Anaconda have a 30 dollar 10 litre shower bag ! I think it 10 litres? Anyway fill it up leave it out in the sun where possible the water warms slightly inside the bag hang it up somewhere instant shower. Cheers 🍻
Another great video Timbo, definitely not knocking OZ tents, they are a great product but they pack up to a length of 2.1 meters which can be a challenge depending on what vehicle have. The Black Wolf turbo tents are well worth a look if you want to pack it inside the car. Keep the videos coming 👌
G'day Rich, Thanks mate. I'm looking at a few other tent brands from replies that have come through on this video. See what happens down the track mate and thanks a lot for your reply. Cheers Tim.
pretty much the same...the only differences are two drawers for recovery gear and basic cooking for road side stops, camp bed to get the swag above ground and a 65 qtr water bladder.
G'day mate, Thats a great simple camping setup that you have. You dont need much gear at all to still be comfortable out in the bush. Thanks a lot for your reply. Cheers Tim
I have luxury compared to some but not others haha, I use a dog trailer as a sleeping quarters but Im yet to work out everything else which is why I watched your video. Busy writing lists of what I need to be fully self sufficient on the road. Thank you for the info. Subbed you and liked the vid
Gday mate, That’s a great idea using a small dog trailer as your camper. Start out with some basic camping gear and see what extra you might need as you get away camping more often. Thanks a lot for your feedback and subscribing to my channel. Cheers Tim
@@JustOneKnight The 270 degree awnings are a great idea for shelter. But for me, it's one item i will never fit on my 4WD. They are heavy and the whole thing has to be set up. How much weight Im carrying is high on my thoughts when it comes to accessories. They are a personal preference, but i like the single roll out awning and if im base camping up for a few days or longer, i will attach my extension awning sheet, which gives me plenty of shelter. Hope that helps mate.
Gday Michael, Thanks mate for your feedback on the tent setup you are using. I’ll look into a few options for tents. Thanks again for your reply. Cheers Tim.
I've got 4 items to set up. A pod on the back for privacy when nature calls and shelter while cooking if it's wet, awning if I want it and my chair. My bed is in the back if my Pajero so no need to set that up all the time and lastly what ever I'm cooking with. Table drops down on my back door so really no set up.
Also Tim you carry heaps more than I do lmfao. I've got 1 drawer for mostly cooking gear, a drawer fridge and than it's just slap in my bedding, clothes and fill the fridge with food and drinks.
@@timbates4wdadventures the bed set up is great for solo trips. Could fit 2 if I wanted to. If you want to see more mate I've got videos on my channel.
Gday mate. That’s great you found this video helpful. Simple camping gear works well. I have another video of what I pack in my camp boxes, maybe check that out. Absolutely a first aid kit is required. Thanks mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
Nice one Tim. My set up is much the same: take as little as I can get away with to keep weight down and to also avoid spending too much time setting up or packing down. Good question for the live chat: what’s the worst or most useless camping equipment purchase anyone has ever made?
G'day mate, Yeah, thats one of the great things about a simple setup, is that the setup and pack up doesn't take long at all. Keeping the weight down is key for what im taking away. Top idea for the question you have asked mate. I will look into that one for sure, it will be an interesting chat. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim.
Gday mate. I had the awning extension made by a motor trimmer. Made to the length I wanted. It’s finding anything like that in the shop Thanks heaps mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim
Where did your get your cooking kit from? Love the old setup. How do you find the gas stove in the higher altitudes? We have long been using dual fuel and gave up on the gas.
Gday mate, The cook set is hand made. Not from a shop. I’ve never had any issues with gas at some of the higher elevation spots I’ve camped at. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim
Tim can I encourage you to think carefully about the tent? I have a gazebo tent. No good in high country on cold night. Swag much better. Oh, currently at Forges Beach. Home tomorrow.
G'day Stanley, One of the main reasons for looking at a tent. Is when im on my filming trips, i have somewhere to sit with more room to unload cameras and charge batteries. I appreciate your feedback though mate, and will take it into account. Enjoy the rest of your trip mate. Cheers Tim
Hi Tim, I am a Pom and I lived in Australia for a couple of years several years ago, you have a beautiful country. have just found your channel and I am loving it. A question which may have been answered elsewhere? You have the five items which include axes and a petrol chainsaw. Where is your first aid kit?
G'day Steve, I have my first aid kit in the seat organiser on the back of my drivers seat. Plus my PLB is in those pockets as well. Thanks mate for your feedback, and im glad you are finding my videos helpful. Cheers Tim.
How about a black pvc pipe mounted to the roof and use that for a shower. To wash clothes , fit a bucket , fill 3 quarters full of water and chuck it some wash powder with your clothes. Put the lid on and whilst you’re driving the clothes will wash by all the agitation .
Gday mate, That’s not a bad idea with a length of black pvc pipe attached to the roof rack. Might look into something like that. Thanks mate for your tips. Cheers Tim
I'm way too impatient to spend 15min on setup. Your kit looks great, just can't see myself caring enough to do it. Something to keep the sun/bugs away, place to cook, sleep and drink a beer (erhm, I mean read) by the fire. Shovel with a spade end though, motor oil for the chain bar.
Hi Batesy, Has the awning ever been an inconvenience in that you've got it all set up and then realise you need to drive somewhere? Where did you get that yellow handled shovel? The cheap I found (so I'm not worried about it getting flogged off the roof) is green. Blends in with the bush so it's more likely to get left behind at camp. A yellow handled shovel would be great.
G'day mate, I pretty much only setup the awning extension when im on my solo trips. Base camped up and not going out again. Ive had that shovel for years mate, hasn't been pinched yet. Lol Thanks for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
Change the car from a Nissan to a Toyota and I nearly have the same setup. I’ve kept my draws still, but have added box’s like you. Question? Have you thought of ever buying a small off road camper?
G'day mate, Sounds like we both a have simple setup, but a camping setup that works really well. Yeah mate, i have thought about a small camper down the track. I think the tent will be my next addition to my camping camping gear. Thanks a lot for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures Just make sure the mattress fits in the tent as mine is a bit of a squeeze. Feels like a bed and the tent gives you a bit of headroom. Cheers.
First video I've seen where an operator of chainsaws has chaps/pants with them to use while camping. Kudos to you. It's not hard and could save a limb. Well done for presenting the safety and indicating its not hard to achieve. Cheers and enjoy your camping adventures.

Yeah mate, the chainsaw pants are a must. Just incase that chains breaks.

G'day mate,
I hope to get back up the Cape some day.
Cockatoo Crossing can be a challenge thats for sure.
Im glad that you are having a great trip.
Stay safe mate.

The best advice from an absolute legend of the Australian bush. Simple really is best. A quick and easy set up means more time to enjoy life out in theis great country of ours.
Gday mate,
Ya can’t beat a simple camping setup, and still have a great camping experience.
Thanks a lot for your reply and feedback mate. Greatly appreciate it.

Great message mate. With all the gear and all the money these days, people have forgotten about a nice simple setup. It’s a crying shame.
Great message.

Gday Matt,
Yeah spot on mate.
A lot of people see all the latest and greatest and generally expensive, and they think you need all that to go camping.
When you sure don’t.

Yeah mate, thats pot on.

Saving up mate until you can get that bit better quality gear will save you money down the track.

Thats a great idea for making up the shower setup you have.
Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers Tim.
Swag up on a stretcher great for comfort and getting off the ground during winter makes a difference.
Thanks Simon.
Appreciate your feedback.
Cheers Tim.
G'day Sam,
Thanks very much for that.
I didn't even think about SC for tents, only thought about them for swags.
I will c heck out the tent range for sure and yes all Aussie made.

Sometimes my camp has 3 items to set up, awning, table & chair. Other times, it's literally zero items thanks to setting up my patrol with a single bed in it. Good tips for the beginners 👍

Stretcher tent. Thanks for the info. Fairly basic camp set up.
G'day Bruce,
I have had a few replies with the same shower setup that you have.
Sounds very simple and no power required which is great.
I must have a look at that option.

G'day Rob
Thats ace mate that your kids are keen on camping. It sure is a great family time away.
Your setup sounds simple, but has everything that you need to be comfortable.
Cant beat the camp oven mate for cooking up big meals for the family.
Thanks a lot mate for your reply.

G'day mate,
Spot on mate about less is more. Couldn't agree more.
heated chairs mate. How do they work? Lol
Thanks a lot for your feedback on the RV4 that you have.
I know a few people with those tents, and they said the same thing about getting the fly to go over the top.
Thanks for your reply mate.

Rv2 or 3 are great and well made.
Using a tent you can also leave it set up and do day trips. Best one I’ve come across! 👍
G'day Darren,
Yeah mate, the RV3 i reckon would work well for me.
The extra room would be great.
Thanks for your feedback mate.

my 2 cents on the shower, I’ve got one of the rechargeable 12v showers from kickass, no messy cords do deal with, just drop it in your bucket and your good to go, takes up no room at all
G'day Jack,
Thanks mate, i appreciate your feedback on the shower setup you have.
Cheers Tim.

G'day mate,
Yeah when your family goes camping you will need more gear.
My tent setup is 15 minutes total with everything set up. I don't reckon you need much to be comfy, so long as you can get a good feed and have a decent sleep then all is good.
G'day Jenny,
Thats the go, just setup your camping gear that works for you. Simple and comfortable is the go for sure.
Awning are a must i reckon for going camping. They provide so many options when it comes to the weather.

Gday Graeme,
Yeah I’m maybe looking at the rv3 for that extra room inside.
Bit heavier than your tent.
See how things pan out down the track.
Thanks mate for your feedback.
Cheers Tim
I second the Oztent. Tough and easy to setup.
@@timbates4wdadventures Hi Tim, at the recent Caravan/Camping show in Sydney on display was a RV2 (new size). Bigger than RV1 and smaller than RV3. Looked good. Will be available in August,
@@gregrobinson2394 Ive bought the RV 3 mate.
G'day Steve,
Thanks mate for your feedback.
I'll look into the shower tents.

Yeah a shower unit would be pretty mint especially to keep the misses happy haha
I was look at one of those 30seconds but because of the pack up length and not having a roof rack on my hilux. I ended up going the black wolf 240 turbo tent. Which fits neatly in the tray, but the RV 30second tent would be ideal for your patrol

G'day Billy,
Thanks mate.
Simple setups are the go. You sure don't need much to be comfortable while out camping.
Yeah cool mate. They are handy little cameras.

G'day Kerry,
Someone else also mentioned Southern Cross.
@@tims728 just been on the Southern Cross website.
Looks the goods.
Kerry

Perhaps a stretcher for under the swag instead of a tent? Makes it much more comfy and still easier than setting up a tent/bedding.

Im mainly looking at a tent for the extra room on some of the longer trips i have planned.

You go camping to get away from it all, not to bring it all with you! A couple of quality (but within budget) items is all you need👌

Agree, rv3 would replace your extra awning, good tent!
Plus use a basic swag to keep mattress and bedding quick and easy. The worst thing about a tent is forever rolling sleeping bags.
One tip, the tent will be a bit colder than the swag.
Our RV3 is great. Put some side walls on it and get rid of the car awning

Can’t beat an electric chainsaw Tim! Plenty of power and the battery lasts more then long enough. No need to carry stinky unleaded.
30 sec tents are good but heavy. I’ve seen plenty of comments here recommending other things
Shower tent, whether a roof rack mounted or just a pop up ensuite. I don’t bother with a tent if the MRS isn’t coming. Get a lithium rechargeable drop in pump. Charge while you’re driving and take up no room.

I bring my farm boss 230 chainsaw everywhere l go and need a handy bag like yours, where abouts do you you store that and what time do you go too bed. The log splitter is the only thing l miss and don't bring on my big trips up here in cane toad country.

I use compaq cookers that use Propane cylinders which also power my shower heater. Also, we just did 18 days living out of a double swag with no problems.
Propane cookers are very handy mate.
Good setup if your shower works off the same cans.
Thanks for your feedback.

G'day mate,
Less is more alright.

Gday mate,
I greatly appreciate your numbers on the weight of a roof top tent vs OzTent.
The weight factor for me is only one reason I’ll still never own a RTT.
All roof storage is take up.
Climbing up & down ladders
Have to pack up every time I want to go for a drive
Extra fuel usage with wind drag
I know they work for so many people, but I’ll never be one of those. Lol.
I’m Looking at other tent options that are much lighter as well.
Plus, in a tent I will still sleep on the ground without a stretcher.
Thanks again mate.

It's funny you mention the 30 second tents
You've really inspired me to look at the weight of the gear I'm taking with me and I want to get a 30 second tent too (oztent rv3) because that will replace my awning and swag. If it wasn't so long it would let me remove my roof rack (all its being used for is my awning and it's 50kg!!) But unfortunately I need the roof rack to transport it.
I might look into getting the 2 or 3 bar style roof rack which is around 10kg and selling my awning (will always keep the swag) but if it wasn't for the length, I think the rv3 would make much more sense to a lot of people
Gday Josh,
Yeah, weight reduction of camping gear is vital.
Top stuff mate and thanks for your feedback

Change the car from a Nissan to a Toyota and I nearly have the same setup. I’ve kept my draws still, but have added box’s like you. Question? Have you thought of ever buying a small off road camper?
G'day mate,
Sounds like we both a have simple setup, but a camping setup that works really well.
Yeah mate, i have thought about a small camper down the track.
I think the tent will be my next addition to my camping camping gear.
Thanks a lot for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.

A 2 man $250 tent with a $20 kmart thick blow up mattress is compact and comfortable.
G'day mate,
Yeah righto.
Thanks for your feedback on the tent setup that you have.
Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures Just make sure the mattress fits in the tent as mine is a bit of a squeeze. Feels like a bed and the tent gives you a bit of headroom. Cheers.
