I do motocycle camping and hiking myself so the sheer amount of crap that people think they need boggles my mind. So much of it just adds cost and complexity. 4WD lets you carry a good camp chair and a big ice chest which is all the luxury i need.

I’ve had it all, Expensive, medium and low cost. Now in low cost mode and like you, never looked back. Been around Australia twice now and having so many options with roof top tent, awing, spare tent and set up like yours gave me options big campers didn’t. Each to their own and depends what you prepared to live with. The only thing I’ve added is a gas bottled shower unit made by Companion. This is for dishes/showers off grid. For $450, wonder why I didn’t buy earlier. OH, I’ve dumped extras to carry extra 100ltrs water and purchased 50m thin hose to run from creaks to unit. I don’t have 4wd, but SUV and set up similar. Yes, takes more time to set up, but running/replacement costs so much less. Great vid. Thanks

I had an old triton ute with a small crane on the back, i used to just extend the boom of the crane out and hang my hammock off underneath it.
If you put a tarp over the arm of the crane you basically then had A frame tent on the back of the ute.
Had to hide the jack handle that was cranked to move the crane upwards though otherwise people would try to make your hammock go from horizontal to vertical while you're still in it lol.

Ok so complicated for no reason. All u need is a tent, canopy, decent mattress, a good cooler and a cooking setup. My rig is a 2O15 f150 , with a soft camper topper, $750, two popup canopies from wallmart, one for over the truck bed and one for the rest of the area. $150. Twin air mattress, $40, dewalt battery compressor with 2 batteries, $150. A couple solar charges ,$200 in parts homemade, Colman camp stove $60, yeti cooler,$200, and for comfort a dewalt battery fan $75. Couple camp chairs, folding table and miscellaneous other items, $200. I also mounted a pair of deep cycle marine batteries for more available power , but that’s really just optional. So although it cost me $450 to do, I would not call it a necessity. All in about $1700. If I didn’t op for the truck topper and chose a basic tent, would have been less than a $1000

So true. My girlfriend and canoe/camp with only our food a few supplies , a sleeping bag and a tarp.
And these are deep in the northern boreal forest of north west Canada. Mo shit, mo problems. Plus a portage with gear monkeys is painful.
Same with travel over seas. I carry a school sized backpack. For 3 to 6 month stays. I get a kick from all the people who go out and spend 1000s of dollars on gear to travel Europe etc . When they can get anything they need in Europe for far less. And half the things people bring they hardly use. I get a kick out of watching people struggle with their abundance of borderline useless gear.
And then there is the people who need the most prim accommodations. Some of my most memorable experiences come from sleeping in a ditch or park in some far off land( russia, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Romania etc.)
Being uncomfortable at times is actually what i believe makes living worthwhile and memorable.

Great to point out that you don't need buckets of money for a lot of gear just basics. A lot of my camping gear is been in use by me since before 1991 and still working. Camp stoves n cooking gear. I've been using a Tent Cot for over 12 years, now on fridge / freezer that I should have got many years ago only good use for coolers is for fish and game or day use. To many people have moved to "Glamping" not camping. Many times I still just take and use a hammock skipping tent even.
I wish all of you down under to be released back to normal life soon.
