Holy cow! A 16 and 13 yo with the best Rime of the Ancient Mariner reaction ever...she knew and fully understood the story and then extra bonus points for him for picking out the brilliant bass line.
Thanks!
"I usually can't hear the bass...."
Steve Harris: Hold my beer......
"Girl ears!!"
You should hear it live, its brilliant
Steve (a fucking machine 'Arry) Harris !!!!
If you love bass, my favorite band always has their bass turned way up. The Warning's song Dust to Dust begins with bass...
Three teenage girls from Mexico, sisters. The Warning. Their 2nd album, Queen of the Murder Scene, is a concept album, which is best listened to live because of the energy of their performance with an audience. Best listened to in the order on said album because it tells a story. I've linked this from their concert at Foro Didi.
Anyway, here's links for your viewing and listening pleasure...

@@Nope2022HugeTheWarningFan Thanks for the recommendations. I listened to a few and will listen to thew rest soon ..... Mind blown. What a gifted group of girls.
Dear Parents,
Introducing your kids to Iron Maiden, ESPECIALLY this song, is parenting done right!
Thank you. I've been taking my daughter to see Maiden every tour since 2008. My first show was 1986 :D
@@MichaelRCarlson outstanding!
@@MichaelRCarlson you're the best dad ever
I am taking 2 of my daughters (29 and 16) to a Maiden concert this October in Columbus, Ohio. Will be the concert that will ruin all others for them! It just doesn't get any better than that.
We read this in high school too, my English teacher allowed me to play this song for the class, we typed out the lyrics and passed them out...teacher was an older lady and she was blown away. Changed her view of heavy metal that day
You served metal well that day
I DID THIS SAME THING AND GOT BONUS POINTS
Similarly I did a history presentation in high school and played 'Where Eagles Dare' the professor immediately grabbed the album booklet to see what else they had and requested I play 'The Trooper' next. He became a huge fan from then on.
Dude, did you have Mrs. Hofstetter in HS?
Wm. Patrick Milford nah, I’m NC
Nice to see someone noticing Steve Harris beastly bass
You guys are the first I have ever seen react to this song and totally get it. The fact that you have already studied the poem is awesome by itself but when you both recognised that the music was crafted around the poem to make it come alive, I was blown away. Such a refreshing change - keep it up!
Thanks for the encouraging comment!
advice: don't pause during a guitar solo or you'll miss the point of it, structures...
Btw, good to see kids listening some good music, I started listening this band when I was 12 yo some decades ago
Plus, it's just wrong.
Also, try to find lyric videos or lyrics when you can - Genius.com is a great source for lyrics and background on many songs.
Agree, as a high schooler, it’s nice to see other kids listen to this kind of music, I live rock, and no one in my class does🙁
It’s a sin
I was also 12. I gave my mother my Bon Jovi album when I discovered Iron Maiden, AC/Dc and Black Sabbath.
It is their first time listening to the song - they do have to stop and talk ( or give their viewpoint). Any time they break for a talk or viewpoint - someone will say you can not do it now.
Superb reaction...it's my favorite Iron Maiden song...it's like watching a movie...good job!!
A little tip kids: If you have a book report or history report, check out some Iron Maiden. They've been teaching through music since 1980.
Late 70s not 80s
I used the lord of the flies song to study for my book report in 9th grade. Needless to say I got a 70
Only other band I’ve ever seen kill it when it comes to history is Sabaton (check em out! If you guys are gonna keep checking out more rock and metal they started in 1999 so they count right? Lol)
💯 facts Maiden are great teachers F it there poets in a metal ass kicking fashion
saw em twice in 1980 at the UEA in norwich & in a pub 6 months previous where they did T Rex songs ,that was after the footy ,one of them lets go in moments :) turned out 2 be a good chopice
When they play this live Bruce introduces the song as "what not to do if a bird shits on you"
I love these kids...they make me a proud daddy
Well, pop, from what i can see, you are a great daddy!!
New to subscription. Keep up the good work kids and pop. Might I suggest anything by RUSH.
A reaction to their live version of (Flight 666 2008) this song is a must, their energy is so contagious!!
lml
As you should be great job dad
Iron Maiden will always be the best metal band. Long live Eddie.
Amazing parenting, not only are they listening to the worlds greatest band, but they're analyzing the songs and she actually knows the poem.. That's awesome...
This dad is most proud of this reaction.
Used to listen Iron Maiden when younger! You guys made me go back to those wonderful years. Thank you! Good on you appreciating quality music!
I've seen this guys over 50 times live. They are amazingly energetic in concert. Great reaction. Keep it up.
Dang. I'm so jealous. I saw them in 2007.
@@RayfordRaySiegel I only saw them once, but it was a good one. Powerslave tour with Twisted Sister. I was in grade 7!
Steve Harris is one of the greatest bassists in rock’n’roll, with a very prominent and unmistakable tone. When you listen to Maiden, definitely keep an ear open for the bass, as it’s a critical and unique part of the Maiden sound.
If you take history in school, Iron Maiden has many songs that will teach you in 4-7 minutes, what your teacher will take hours.
My dearest little ones you are very quickly climing on my list of coolest kids in this world! Well done! Claire, so amazing that you had read the poem. It gives you so much insight in this song. And Walker, yes, that base is super cool. Steve Harris is one of the best base players today. He and Marko Hietala from Nightwish are my favourites.
And yes Eddie is really cute!🙂
Keep rocking guys!🤘
Thanks.. I think they are pretty cool
Another history lesson from Maiden: Paschendale.
you need to go to a Maiden concert when things are back to normal and see this song live, it is amazing.
That would awesome
Unfortunately they don't play it often enough live Kris :( Last time I saw them play it live was on the flight 666 tour.
they only pause between songs too !
@@sutekh233 Sadly very true. We saw them at Twickenham on that tour and Mariner was fucking amazing.
Next song recommendation: Alexander the Great.
TheDeckinator history lesson in song
🔥
Oh yeah 100%
Everybody gonna love that
Excellent choice. I suggest "Where Eagles Dare"...
This song is the final track on one of the greatest Heavy Metal albums of all time.
I remember, at the time, just being completely blown away.
And for some reason, when Dave & Adrain, launch into the guitar harmonies, it's
such a beautiful moment. Just something about it just moves me.
Many of Iron Maiden's lyrics are based on literal works and history. If you keep listening you may learn something . Their songs are great because they tell stories.
You two are adorable! So well brought up to appreciate music like this and to know the source material so well! Congratulations to your parents and to you both!
Just a little advice, never pause in the middle of a guitar solo, it will upset a lot of your watchers. If you pause I would recommend you back it up 10 secs when you start again. Just don't want you guys to get a lot of flack from watchers. Glad you enjoy Maiden, much more to explore.
With this impressive analysis of the song, it shall be forgiven ;-)
Greetings from someone, who usually gets his little private heart attacks in these moments :-)
Most of their songs come from poems and/or history, you can check Iron Maiden - Empire of the Clouds. Your will love it too!
Empire is their worst song ever

That's an epic song (literally, it is their longest song to date and one that covers immense musical ground).
Bass in Iron Maiden songs is very audible. Steve is one of the biggest part of this band. Young fellow has good ear ;)
You guys know what you're doing. Brilliant song choices. Fun fact, when we read this poem back when I was in school, I had the teacher play this song for the class lol. Definitely check out some of Maiden's live performances from their Flight 666 DVD. Highly recommend "Revelations" from it.
Walker is the man for giving props to the bass, Steve Harris is one of the greatest of all time.
I did the same thing Tyler :D
Yes! Revelations from Flight 666!
You had a really cool Teacher.
Best reaction ever to this song. No other reactor fully appreciated the piece of art that this is (and the pice of art that inspired it). I was so pleasantly surprised!
thanks! appreciate your appreciation
Really well done. Brought me immediately back to my own school time. It was summer 1986, schoolyear was going to end soon and we were doing poetry and images in poetry. I'm German and English is my 2nd language. Anway I have been a Maiden fan since 1982 and always was the weird nerdy kid who listens to this strange, noisy, amusical and possibly godless stuff. So as soon as I looked at the page with the exerpts from the poem, guitars flared up in my mind and my mind was reading the words with the rhythm and Bruce's intonation. I could only blurt out "Oh, The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. I know that" although the title was only in a very small footnote at the end of the text. Got some strange looks from my classmates and the teacher, because he never even suspected that I even would have the slightest interest in poetry. I told them about Maiden and the teacher agreed to put a pin in it and do it in the next lesson which would be the last of the schoolyear anyway. Best.English.Lesson.Ever!
I didn't make many new Maiden fans that day, because the Mariner is not the first piece by Iron Maiden anyone should ever hear, especially not the more that 15 minute long live version from "Live After Death", but that was the only one I had. But at least it raised some awareness, that metal isn't just noise. And Iron Maiden are really masters of strong storytelling. That's why I love them so much #UpTheIrons
Try "Alexander the great"...by iron maiden...not just great music...but you get a history lesson, thrown in for free....check it out
I got an "A" in my English Class due to this song , the teacher asked for our thoughts on this ST Coleridge poem. Needless to say as a huge Maiden fan I lifted most of my thoughts on the poem from this song. I was 15 at the time ad the album had only just been released , it was a Loooong time ago . I'm glad you are enjoying it !
Most of the repetition in Maiden songs is actually varied slightly from bar to bar. In the first pass, for example, the bass line will follow the melody, but then in the second pass drop down to thud on lower notes. The intricacy of their harmonies is epic and is worth studying. They don’t just rock. Lol
I feel so sorry for kids today they have nothing, music wise which even comes close to the brilliance of Iron Maiden in the 80's..
im sorry they invented pausing during songs !!!!
What about Cardi B? lol
I recommend Iron Maiden "Dance of Death"
I gotta say, I’ve watched a few of your videos..., and your parents are exposing you to some really great music... Keep it up.
In 2012, I actually met the drummer, Nicko McBrain, in a Denny's restaurant in San Antonio.
Great reaction! You mentioned the "Egyptian Eddie", that is the cover of Powerslave, the album this song is from. If you ever do the official video for Wasted Years, they show the many incarnations of their mascot Eddie throughout the years. Great song written by one of their guitarists Adrian Smith, it's mostly about their time touring, being away from home. Listen especially to the chorus, great message there. Bruce Dickinson sings it clearly enough you should be able to understand.
I used this song when we read the poem in english class, my teacher wanted a copy of it when we were through, so I brought her one.
Claire and Walker, you two are definitely kids after my own heart! That you both enjoyed and understood the song was beautiful to behold. It gives hope for the next generation. The insights you shared demonstrate depth beyond your years as well. Subscription earned! 👍
Consider yourselves followed! The fact that someone so young knows that poem (and obviously what the song is about) has given me some hope in humanity!
Added to the fact you're both appreciative of great music and musicians.
Thank you for making my day a little more cheery!
Rock on!
Thanks for the encouraging comment.
I had 14 when that record came out. And still having fun listening to this song. You two reminded me those old times. Thank you.
Great breakdown! Great to see you both embrace this music. Maiden are truly great storytellers. Keep listening. There are so many awesome
songs in this genre. 🤘🏽
It’s so interesting how the sailers are dying of thirst when there is water all around them. Of course it’s because of it being salt water. A tragic irony. Another great song that covers a Coleridge poem (Kubla Khan) is Xanadu by Rush. It’s epic just like this one. Not to be missed. Especially the live video from Exit Stage Left.
Ab. So. Lutely. And if you want to read the source material, it's a LOT shorter. Lol
I agree! Do it plzzz! Awesome job kids...and Parents!!
You are listening the best song of the best band ever!
I hope you seeing Maiden live in the future! (I´ve seen them 4 times)
greatings from Mexico!
By the way, listen "the man who would be king"
Next lesson kids : Iron Maiden - Alexander The Great
It’s nice to see a reactor that actually deciphers the lyrics and understands what story the song is telling.
Good job guys, this is one of my 15 year old son's favorite songs! He loves Iron Maiden and has seen them twice in concert already. He really liked your takes on this too... On a side note about reading that poem, I'm impressed that you did that. I was curious about the actual poem myself back in the 80s since i loved this song so much. But that was before the internet so I had to go to a library and research it. But the information about the poem, author, and origin were all written in the sleeve of my cassette tape along with the lyrics, so I knew where to start. I found a book of old English poems that had it. ROTAM is a long poem, very long and much longer than the song! I can see how you wished that you had heard the song before reading it, since I don't think I would have understood much of what was written in it without knowing the modern translation of the song first.
Kermit's been there, too? Insane!!! *lol* Love your reaction to this song, which is one of the best Iron Maiden songs ever (MY opinion)...looking forward to see more of you kids soon, thank you for that one... :D
Claire, have you studied ancient history yet? Check out the song Alexander the Great, another Iron Maiden educational song.
interesting that Alexander- DIDNT have a pause button ...factamundo
Actually a 70% of the songs of Maiden are educational or treat a history event, for example aces high or the tropper
I've heard this song thousands of times and have never had it explained to me before , thank you Clair .
Seen them 4 times and after each show my ears ring and I can barely talk for days and I would see them again in a heartbeat.
Such a great album! This was the first tour I saw Iron Maiden on. I still have the ticket stub (I keep all my stubs). Not my first concert, but my first Maiden concert. My mind was definitely blown.
Been watching your guys reactions and have to say I love seeing your take on great music, gained a new subscriber from New Zealand here guys, keep it up amazing insight and reactions. well done
Thanks Jace
A very informative reaction young lady, you are the first that I've seen that actually read the poem. Keep up the good work both of you.
You'll be seeing that pic a lot as you get into Maiden. That album is a masterpiece, ten songs, eight classics. Unsurpassed.
Up the irons!
P.s. Metal bands take a lot less liberties with source material than movies. If you ever read the Iliad, can make a recomendation. And Sabaton is a gold mine for history.
Yes! Sabaton is one of the best!
I am 54 years old and Iron Maiden is my favorite band. Ancient Mariner is my favorite song. So, I had to come 'czech' out this reaction when it popped up.
First and foremost, Claire, thank your teacher for making you read the epic poem by Samuel Taylor Colridege, s/he had great vision. Had I not been a fan of the band I may never have taken the chance to read it. It wasn't until I was much older than you I took the opportunity when I borrowed my brother's Norton Anthology of English Literature decades ago. Oops, still have it, never returned it ;)
Steve Harris is a very cerebral guy, often times writes about historical events and personas. I've learned a lot from him and he's opened my eyes to things we should read/know.
As he penned, "the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man" Wiser being the key word.
Lastly, I 'shrive' (forgive) you about forgetting the Hermit.
Little man has a keen ear for bombastic bass
Little lady ‘CLEVER’
Man, y'all make me remember what it was like when I heard these songs for the first time at 13 in 1983! Thanks for the trip down memory lane and shout out to the cool dad, my kid got rocked as well :p
Great idea to just leave the kids to react to it. Some channels with parent kid reactions the parents always seem to impose the reaction on to the kids. This is just pure. And these kids genuinely got a great ear for musical detail. Keep it up!
I'll just mess things up. I get as much joy watching it after they record it. It's more fun that way.
@@3YearsApart1613 Good on you man, trust the kids to know what's up, they clearly do.
Repetition is there for a reason. Especially in this song.
I totally love watching you kiddos digging the Greatest Heavy Metal band in the World! Hope you can catch them on tour! Would be a Killer first concert!Keep Rockin!!🤘Glad I stumbled across you channel!👍
If you like this song, check out '2112' by Rush. It tells a story too and will blow your minds!
I loved your reaction to this song.you two are funny. This is one of my favorite Maiden songs. Keep up the good work.
Good to hear Claire and Walker mention "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin. Good observation that there are similarities between both songs...this sailor thanks you for this review of an ancient mariner! 😀👍
Thank you wise old sailor ;)
When I heard "land of ice and snow", I thought of "Stranger In A Strangeland", from my favorite Iron Maiden album, "Somewhere In Time".
@@RayfordRaySiegel I like it too - but speak truly its hard to chose it their best album co'z they are a fuk'n great ;).
The best comment...."girl ears"...lol!! So proud of you two really giving this epic metal song its due. Excellent review and commentary!! Keep up the good work you two!! BTW..Steve is da best!!
I laugh every time I watch that part
back in the 80's i knew several kids who used this song to pass the test or do a report for English Lit lol
Metal cliff notes
Songs always help with memory. Remember Potsie on Happy Days and the “Pump your blood” song he sang for anatomy class?
Steve Harris the bass player and main lyricist does a lot of songs that are about history like the trooper, run to the hills, aces high, on and on have fun exploring
All of them are great musicians, be it Steve, Dave, Adrian, Nicko or Bruce
So entertaining i wish all reaction videos were this good ,well done
Pro tip to any metal reaction never pause between a guitar solo...
In 1987 my sophomore English teacher told us about this band he was 70 yrs old and from England he rocked ! He loved the way Maiden would sing about literature .
You had the most awesome teacher ever!
I was 10 when I discoverd Iron Maiden, back in 1983! Been a fan since! I like seeing young people listening to great music!
Great job guys. Unlike you, I knew the song first before I had to read the poem in school. I remember buying this record and and as soon as I got home placing it on the record player. I nearly destroyed the record because I kept picking up the needle and moving it back during one of the many change ups (16:18 - 16:40 point of your video) at least 10 times. My 14 year old years were blown away. As always, "Up the IRONS!" \m/ \m/
Congrats. Great to feel that rush of listening this song for the first time. And you guys!? Wow! Nice comments and down to earth analysis. Really. Becoming a fan. Hi from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. And up the Irons!!!
Smart Kids! With Iron Maiden I learnt a lot of history! I became fan at the age of 15. You should see them in a live performance. Greetings from Ecuador 😍🇪🇨
Wow. Been listening to this song for 35 years and I learned more about the tale within it then I ever have before. Sweet.
This is the best reaction channel I've come across in a long time. After Lost in Vegas, which is by far the gold standard of reaction channels, there's a massive drop off in quality.
The premise of your channel is unique with the 'teen' bit. And y'all do a good job .
FYI, don't give up on Tool just yet. Not trying to talk down to you but their music and lyrical themes are more than likely a little too sophisticated without the life experience to relate them too. I think the song Lateralus would probably appeal to you musically, lyrically, and also with the accompanying video. It's a very uplifting song.
Well then, it's settled, you just picked our next tool song. We just recorded a few reactions today, but when we get through getting those posted, I will have them react to Lateralus.
Thanks for such an encouraging comment.

In 1987 when I was a senior in high school, my class read Rime of the Ancient Mariner. I was and still am a huge Iron Maiden fan. I told my teacher about this song and she let us listen to it in class. It was pretty cool. Glad you youngsters are digging it 😎
Well done. Outstanding superlative effort in finding an old Classic from one of the most literate of rock/metal bands. I literally shed a tear on your behalf. To think some young folks would "waste their time" on this as opposed to the made in a factory pop dujour. Well done.
loved the reaction tnx, not many of us guys here have actually read the poem, hehe. i was sixteen when this was realeased, saw them live on that tour, it was amazing, still compare all shows to that one...
Coleridge is one of my favourite poets and I too read the poem in school. When I heard the song later, I was so in love with it. The recreated lyrics are so accurate yet so very much a thing of its own! This is literally a recreation of my past! Knowing the poem makes listening to this song so much better. While one talks about the poem, the other talks about the bass! This is the best possible reaction video for this song! I’d be proud to be a parent to such awesome kids! 👏🏻
Thanks! So glad you enjoyed it.
Ran across you guys by accident, and I'm glad I did. Been listening to Iron Maiden since the early 80's, and believe me when I say they only get better. You mentioned Broadway in a few of you reactions. Their live shows are VERY theatrical.
Try listening to The Trooper, Run to the Hills, Wasted Years, and Flight of Icarus. You might be impressed.
Keep doing what you guys do, you're only going to get bigger and better. Good luck...
This album came out when I was in high school. I had never read the poem, but I did an essay based on this song for English class. My teacher asked me "Have you ever read The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner?" I said no, but I love the song. That spoken part is quoted from the actual poem I believe. Good job guys. 👍
Ok. First of all, I'm delighted that these two kids enjoyed the music. I'm overjoyed that a 16 year-old was able to grasp the lyrical content so accurately!
BTW an albatross was thought to be a "good omen" because if you were a sailor and saw one, it meant you were close to shore.
This little one is very funny. Congratulations, great video and great music, say what, it's a classic, Iron Maiden.
I was 13 when i discovered Maiden.. And now i'm almost 40..
You've just earnt a sub...Smart and cultured kids. G'day from Australia!
Thanks Jason
GREAT REACTION!!! As a bass player myself, I think it's awesome that the young man (sorry, I don't know your name🤦♂️) caught onto the bass lines!! Maybe we have a future bassist in the making??🤔..Great job, guys!!👏👏👏
Iron Maiden gives history lessons for free on almost all their albums!
Well, there you go, instant gratification, thanks for the recommendation. Glad you liked this one. As an English teacher, I get a kick when a student realizes the connections between music and literature.
Glad you enjoyed it! Claire actually sent this to her 9th grade English Lit teacher to show her appreciation for introducing her to the poem.
@@3YearsApart1613 That's awesome. I've heard many stories about it being played in English classes over the years. Maiden pulled from many literary/historical sources for song ideas, which I've always appreciated. Though to be honest, "Quest for Fire" is a bit daft. But on the same album you get "To Tame A Land" based on the Dune books, so that balances it out. Glad the kids are getting a solid education in the "old school"!
Iron Maiden does their homework, kids. These men are well educated in western civilization and ancient history.
I never ever get tired of this song ! It’s a metal masterpiece . I’m so glad you two are discovering Maiden.
Fun fact, I once passed a history class in high school because of Iron Maiden. The last part of our end of the year final exam was to write an essay on Alexander the Great. Somewhere in Time was their latest album and I had been listening to it a lot. I basically just wrote the Lyrics to the song for my essay because I never paid attention in high school. It brought my grade up to a C in the class, so see kids, you can learn stuff from Metal music.
Here's something people should know. Iron Maiden played this song EVERY NIGHT on the longest tour they every did back in 1984/1985 promoting the album. Imagine playing a 13 minute song 189 times in 2 years!
That is insane. Metal is hard work! 🦺🎸🎸🎸
@@3YearsApart1613 It really is! And Iron Maiden are among the hardest workers.
Hats off to these kids parents, this girl is smarter and more articulate than the majority of adults I’ve met in my life.
Damn! You nailed it! Best reaction to this song I’ve seen so far. Only now I comprehend the lyrics. 👌🏻
Many people don’t know that the original poem by Samual Coleridge was inspired by his school teacher who was on Cooks 3rd voyage to the Pacific.
Coleridge was a student and his teacher would tell stories to the boys in the class of his experiences and travels with Coleridges imagination he wrote the poem.
Great to see young people who are switched on and understand the content, you go you pair
Great reaction guys, keep on exploring metal and Iron maiden!!)
Fantastic insight by Claire!
She added her knowledge to the subject-matter, almost narratively and then both kids commented on the aspects of the music which appealed most to them (like many, they were drawn in by the variety of the "Maiden Gallup" sound). Walker's summary of Maiden's incorporation of varying time-signatures displayed his own insight.
These reviews are really enjoyable.
If Maiden ever comes across this video, they should consider naming their next album "The Repetition" ;)
What a great comment. The kids really loved it. Thanks!
Wonderful reaction and great that someone actually knows the poem....great intelligence from you both and a credit to your parents !!
Thanks. We try our best
