  • I think I fixed my tilt problem on my 60HP Mercury Outboard. I ended up buffing the contacts in the relays and it worked.

    Thank you for posting this. It's amazing to me how few videos target the trim/tilt RELAYS, especially on the popular Mercury.
    I got mine working on my 2002 Merc 60 4-stroke using your method, but after another failure, I replaced both with new relays.
    Just FYI: on a that model there are (3) identical relays - you want to replace the top-2 (up and down).

    The power trim just stopped working on my 1993 90 hp Evinrude. No power, no nothing. I have spent hours searching the internet for help on this issue but your video gives me hope. I'm going to try this technique tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed. Thank you so very much for taking the time to provide this information.

    Excellent video!! I have a Merc 1999 60hp. The relays were right above the switch, but from your video I knew what they looked like. Tore it apart, did almost exactly what you did except I sprayed electrical cleaner inside the female connector, blew it out with air and reassembled. I did both of them in less than 15 -20 minutes. Works like a champ!! Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this video for all us novices!! Saved me $150

    Thanks for posting this video. The UP trim on my Tracker didn't work at the end of fishing yesterday. Found your video, which led me to look at the relays. Didn't see any corrosion, tried sanding lightly, but trim was still intermittent. I found replacement relays for $8 each at Pep Boys, and that seems to have worked. Tried replacing just the bad one, but needed to do both to get it to work consistently. $16 well spend if it keeps working. Thanks again.

    I was having the same problem and I found this solution so I went and tried this. When I looked at my contacts they looked perfect so I thought this was not my problem but I went and sprayed WD-40 on the contacts since they were apart anyhow and when I put it back together it solved the problem so even though I could not see the corrosion the WD dissolved it. Thanks for putting this fix out on UTUBE.

    Good video. Just FYI these relays are very inexpensive and easy to replace. Maybe 30.00 for a pair. So if someone is worried about moisture and age it might be worthwhile to just switch them out for new ones rather than buffing the external contacts. The problem might be internal, not the buffable contacts. You should put dielectric grease on the contacts too. If this happens out on the water and you don't have a spare, pop your cowl off and try jiggling/tapping on the relay boxes and that might be enough to re-establish a crusty connection/loosen a stuck switch to get your motor trimming again. I'd even go as far as having a couple spares in your boat if your original ones are older but still working.

    • @OhioFred
      @OhioFred  4 года назад

      That's a great idea to just buy a few pairs. That way you know they are good. Thank for commenting

    Thanks for posting the video!! GREAT job!! Very informative!!I thought I would add that after I cleaned the "down" relay it still did not work. I also tried using WD-40 as suggested below which also did not work in my case. I then switched the relays and tested them. The "down" relay now worked and the "up" relay did not work showing that one relay is good and the other was bad. And at least now the relay I replace is the "up" relay which is the easiest of the two to get to!!

    • @TheDonzidude

    My 40hp Merc goes down but not up. I replaced the relay and it “clicks” but still doesn’t go up. I’ll try buffing the contacts on both relays as the “down” relay, when non-energized, provides the ground path to the motor through normally closed contacts. Also I know you new your system worked, but I would check it before bolting the relay back down.

    On my merc the relays are bolted vertically on the motor. Seems like a bad design to have them on the cowling floor like that. Fuel, oil, or water can get there easier and cause some problems. Good video and description!

    I found this out the hard way. If one relay responds and the other does not, try replacing the one that does not respond. The circuits must go through both relays for each to work. In my case, the circuit had gone bad in the relay that responded which controlled the other relay. Hope this helps someone else.
