I just bought a "new to me" 1996 2 stroke 8HP in super good shape.... looks and runs like brand new... and for the life of me i couldnt figure out why this RING lever whachamathingy, was the lock out mechanism. did not know that the bracket on the small post was there for a reason!! came across this video and BAMMMM answered! Was out of adjustment like described in the video.. thank you!!! works like a charm!! set it and forget it!!! sounding like Ron Pompeil on some infomerciall!!! I have a deep splashwell on an old starcraft and was thinking what a P.I.T.A its gonna be to pull motor but now easy peasy!!
The correct way to set that is to put the motor in forward gear then move that piece with the 8mm up just enough to move that ring a little . This way it will still lock when reversing and be unlocked while going forward .
Very concise video, great time saver, thanks. The only thing I would add is that on my 1999 Mercury 4 stroke 9.9, what I did was I put it in reverse, then slid the adjustment all the way up to where it stayed locked, then tightened it. Then as I shifted back into neutral it unlocked the motor and in forward it drops even lower so therefore stayed unlocked as well.
thank you very much young man! I bought a 9.9 last year and have not been able to tilt the motor! My buddies and i have messed with it. Soon as you said and point at the ring shape latch I went WTF? Nothing that would point that out! You are awesome!! THANK YOU!
One negative on leaving the outboard on tilt is... if you need reverse with throttle the outboard can tilt forward and the prop will try to come out of the water. This happened to me one time when I accidentally left my outboard on tilt. Also, my outboard is on a 26’ sailboat. Thanks for the video.
Appreciate the video. Have a 6hp also. Similar year I believe. Mine won’t stay in the upright tilted position even with the lever in the locked position. Seem like the spring May be worn.
Also the slide piece has a guide nut and if it comes lose it will do the same thing not allowing you to be able to trim your motor it will stay locked down . That just happened to me and all I did was tighten it snugg and problem was fixed
i was actually trying to make it not go up becuase its annoying when the bow goes up then down the motor bounces up do i just do the oppostie of what you did
Hey bro what kind of boat is that? It looks very similar to mine but the video doesn't show the whole thing. I just picked up an old school 1971 aluminum vhull but it's got no labels on it.
@@fishingwiththeks I just tried this with my 15 and I’m soooooo happy you solved the issue! 👏 Question… What is the purpose of the motor ever being latched/locked in position then? Thanks!

Might be a while ago but just did what you've said, had a feeling there was more to it in adjusting so the reverse should lock up, thanx 👍
Dude you saved me with this video. I couldn't figure it out for nothing. Thank you!

Same issue I'm having with my 01 9.9! Gonna try this tomorrow.. my mechanic that cleaned the carb said I'd need new parts..
My Merc 8 won’t lock in the up position.
Thanks I couldn’t figure out how to work that👍
How far up should the adjustable plastic collar be adjusted? Just until the motor tilts freely OR as far up as you can against the cast collar? TY
That’s great info Johnny! Now I’ll know what to do if it gives me trouble 👌😊
Thanks man!!! I too was having the same issue on my 9.9.

@@fishingwiththeks all good, find out it is a reverse lockout adjuster 😁

It’s old 14 ft flat bottom Jon boat if you look back and my older videos you should be able to see some other videos on it.
Good info thanks for sharing 🎣
How close are you to Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley?
OMG, THANK YOU! I'm tired of jumpng in the lake to tilt my 15 HP so I can beach my boat!! What's the facebook group called?
Glad you found the video helpful. I couldn't think of the FB group. I looked around and check a few pages and can't find my post. Sorry.

Thanks!
What oil mix do you run I have the same motor
50:1 and use any 2 stoke oil that is tc3.
what FB group?
helped me
Like. The rope to pull and start will not pull out. It's been stored for a few years
On the top of the pull coil there is a piece to the right which when properly adjuster is pushed up when in neutral
You bet !
Hopefully useful😎
