Dave thanks brother. My mother has had this motor on her litttle zodiac for a few years. About 8 ft I think. Runs great, but the fuel pump/ line is giving out because the engine died last night twice and came back once. Lucky we were right by the dock. But going to diagnose hence why I’m watching this video.
@@ORGANIZEDCoNfUsioN Only thing it does that is problematic is smoke white coming back to idle after a speed run. Replaced the thermostat and the impeller. No water detected in the engine oil (no milkshakes) so the head gasket is likely not the culprit. Compression is also a bit low but still even and it starts first pull. Overall it's healthy. Likely repower will be with a 15 hp if I keep my existing boat for lake and bay ops. 9.9 was good for the ocean since there the premium is on control, not speed.
Man. usually the back splash is form the lower end of the motor and prop to far forward, go out another pin slot so the lower end is farther out from the transom, and try it !
Hi Mark, I tried the 3 settings on the motor before I put the piece of wood in place. Nothing seemed to change the splash back. It's away for the winter now but looking forward to the spring when I can play around with it more. Thanks for checking out the video, take care buddy.
@@ORGANIZEDCoNfUsioN man, nice I recently picked up a used Gragor boat with trailer no motor, but in excellent condition, I just ordered a new Mercury 15 hp with EFI can't wait to hit the water !
Nice review! I am looking for a new OB motor to replace an old 6HP Nissan 1 banger 4-stroker. I was wondering why the tiller arm is pitched up so much? Made me wonder if the angle of attack is too low. I adjust the tilt angle as high as I can just before the boat porpoise's (bow jumping up and down when on plane). I assume your's is a short shaft anyway, but nice idea on adding the spacer under the clamp!
Hey there Curtis, I have tried every setting and this seems to work the best. Yes it is a short shaft. With 1 person in the boat I still need some weight in the front to settle it down once it planes out. Thanks for checking out the video.
@@ORGANIZEDCoNfUsioN My friend purchased a 9.9 Merc 4 stroke and had it dropped shipped to my house. They take possession when they return from New York. I have the new engine on my stand. No oil yet and I will not start it without the owner present ... but I cannot make the tilt mechanism/pin to work. I feel and hear the detents click in but no hold in the up [tilted] position. 1~ Normal operation; is pin 'lock' or 'unlock'? 2~Pull the engine up and THEN raise the pin to 'lock' ? 3~Or 'unlock' , raise, 'Lock'. ? 4~I think the pin wants to hold the engine but is not quite engaging well enough.
How do you like your 8 HP? I just purchased a brand new Merc 8MH outboard for my 10.8’ inflatable boat. Thinking it will be a very nice pairing with that boat!
It might be that you are not letting the motor warm up enough. Mercury suggests a 3 minute warm up. Pull it out all the way and let it run for a bit, then push it in to the second stage and let it run. After 3 minutes it should not stall. If it does something is wrong. Good luck.
This is also a 12, I'm happy with it. Only regret is because it's a small boat I don't use the electric start because of the large battery. Thanks for checking out the video.
im looking at buying that same motor. the guy's holding it for me. 2021 and about 20 hrs on it. with electric start! cant wait to get it! well, im gonna need a boat too, but still cant wait to get the motor! 😂
Is yours a long shaft? Just bought the same motor with a long shaft, and im a little concerned my prop will be too deep on a 15 inch transom and cause issues. Haven’t tired it out yet tho. If yours is a long shaft, what is your transom height?
No my motor is a short shaft, not sure how that will affect it. I raised my motor up 1 inch because of back splash. Thanks for checking out the video. Good luck.
I have a question. Did you drill the transom when installing this engine? Did you just stick it on "butterflies" as standard. Thank you in advance for your answer.
The 9.9 Merc 4 cycles have an accelerator pump, and each twist of the throttle floods the engine with a shot of gasoline. Don't flood the engine, with or without the engine running.
Hey there ahmad tajuldin, this motor with the electric starter weighs in at 93 lbs (42kg) which gets pretty heavy lifting it on and off the transom. Hope that helps, thanks for checking out the video.
Hi Ultos, I tried all the setting up and down and then......if you look in the front of the boat you will see a Home Depot bucket with a cinder block in it. That's how!!! Thanks for checking out the video!!!

Good thing you weren't out in the middle of the lake. Hope you get it fixed, it is a great motor. Thanks for checking out the video.
Great, balanced review, Dave!!! Fun place to do it too...right on the lake!
Thanks Don, this was a lot of fun to do!!!
I have an 06 version of this motor. Co pilot feature VERY handy when trolling single handed.
Hey Rafael, 06 that's cool. I bet it still runs solid. Thanks for checking out the video buddy. Take care.

Luvin' my 2018 9.9. The electric start is definitely a bonus. 😊
That is a great option. Thanks for checking out the Matt.
Great overview. Helped me out as new owner. Thanks.
So happy to hear that!!! Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video.
Sweet boat and review my friend 👌🏾👌🏾👀

Awesome thanks kindly 😎🐋💚
You are so welcome Scott. Thanks for checking it out. Take care buddy.
What’s it like with more people in the boat can you still get it in the plane ?
Yes, but because it's a small boat I've only ever had 1 adult or 2 kids in it and it still does a great job. Thanks for checking out the video!!!
Gracias, me ayudaste a elegir. Buena y completa explicación.
So glad it was helpful. Thanks for checking out the video.
It has a fuel pump that squirts fuel into the engine at each twist of the throttle. That's why it flooded.
Makes sense. Thanks for watching Craig.

Hey there Jan. The pitch on the blade is 8.5. Hope this helps. Thanks for checking it out!!!

I have just been educated. That was interesting. never thought about those boats and how the acceleration is performed.
Glad you found it interesting Brooklyn, thank you.
Great video
Happy days 😄
Thanks so much Troy!!!

Whats the specs on the stock propeller?
Sorry Bye8bye I was trying to find that, not sure of the specs on it. Thanks for checking out the video!!!
Have you used a speedometer and actually get 30?
No I haven't. It's just a guess, but it feels like 30. Thanks for checking out the video.

No @xdxdxdxsd I just dropped it on the back. Thinking about do that, it is safer. Thanks for checking out the video.
Hi, how big is your fuel tank and how long does it last? :)
Hi there, the tank is 6 US Gal or 22 Liters. It last me about a week of running around the lake. Thanks for checking out the video.
The 9.9 Merc 4 cycles have an accelerator pump, and each twist of the throttle floods the engine with a shot of gasoline. Don't flood the engine, with or without the engine running.
Thank you for that important information Craig. I've done that a couple of times.
Do the 8 hp Mercury’s also have this issue to be aware of? Thx.

how heavy is this engine?

I’m getting the manual start 8 hp motor…basically the same motor with a couple different internals. It weighs 84 lbs.

How do you keep the front of your boat down while you are driving at full speed and sitting in the back
Hi Ultos,
I tried all the setting up and down and then......if you look in the front of the boat you will see a Home Depot bucket with a cinder block in it. That's how!!! Thanks for checking out the video!!!
would this be too big/heavy for a 15 ft inflatable?
I don't think so but I would definitely do some research before buying. Thanks for checking out the video.
