Ok so this video is the most niche thing ever but this will save me so much trouble. On my sailboat I used to crawl under the rail trying to grab that little latch and now I know I just had to switch it in forward... I would pay you a beer for this gem of information.
Can't thank you enough for these! I'm the guy who inherited a 1984 Coleman Crawdad from my father in law - then I put a 1994 3hp Merc on it (same colors as your motor) and a TM on the front. I never did get the hull speed you have in your vids, bit I can get 5-6 and its enough for what I need it for. I have actually been going back to the canoes and kayaks more for fishing. Just simple when it's only me...and I have one canoe that will move at 4ish mph with 2 adults and big dogs when everyone wants to go. I'll never get rid of the Crawdad probably... and I have a whole folder of your vids on it -- I've learned a ton from them. Oh yeah, enjoy your new yak! That moving water video you did was awesome.
Man I really appreciate the views and support! Yeah my Crawdad is also a 1984 model! I don’t think I will ever get rid of mine either. It’s been a great and rugged boat. But I agree sometimes it’s great to just get out on the water in a simple canoe or kayak. Those simple days like that are generally the most relaxing. Thank you again for all of the support and taking time to leave a kind comment!
Thank you so much for these detailed explanations! This information is harder to find online than it should be. This all makes sense to me now, thanks to you! You are a massive help to a new boater like me. I appreciate you. I encourage viewers to check out your other videos, too. Many thanks. I will try this next time I'm going onto the water.
Great video. we live on a small lake and recently bought an old pontoon boat w/a Mercury 9.9 engine and several lake neighbors couldn't figure how to lift the motor. I watched your video, went out and shifted into forward and lifted the motor. Not sure if it has a pole adjustment to lift but even w/a bad back and front lol, I was able to lift the motor. I reckon to lower you just shift back into neutral? All this is being done w/the engine off btw.
Yeah to lower it, lift the motor all the way up until you hear a click and it should fall back down to the lower position. Or lift up on the motor, pull the little lever up and it will allow it to fall back down
Hey man thanks for the video. That does help. So I have a 12 foot aluminum boat it’s not a total flat bottom but it’s flat most of the way to there front and I have an 8 hp Johnson seahorse. I only get 7 miles an hour top speed on a good day when the water is glassy and there’s no wind. When my 18-year-old son is in the boat with me which he is most of the time I can barely top out at 5.5 to 6 mph. He does sit at the front of the boat. It has three blades on the prop and the angle is pretty strong I think. Any thoughts on how I can get better performance and speed? It would probably be a good idea to clean my carburetor or get a bigger one but it still seems like I should get quite a bit more power as is. Thanks
You should get at least 15mph depending on how heavy the boat is. If the motor is not bogging down (you think it’s running at the right RPMs) The main things to check are: 1) Trim level - here is a vid ruclips.net/video/PYldlDtkZrI/видео.html Trim has huge impact on speed 2) prop pitch size. #blades isnt really as important as pitch size. Pitch size is how far forward the prop will go forward in every rotation. It’s a little counterintuitive but LOWER pitch size has more acceleration power 3) if you motor is bogging down check fuel filter, clean carb, maybe check fuel pump 4) maybe change spark plug, it’s cheap
Also the motor’s cavitation plate (flat thing above prop) should be pretty close to parallel with the bottom of your boat. If it’s the wrong length motor for the boat that will also kill your top speed
@@Skinnyriver OK great thanks I’ll check all that stuff out. I do know I need to rebuild the carburetor and the fuel pump probably needs to be replaced. The boat is super super late so there’s no reason why it should be bogging except for maybe not getting enough fuel. I can’t imagine the motor vehicle in the wrong size for the boat. I see smaller motors on the same size boats going twice as fast as mine. Thanks for all that.
Let me know how it goes. And when I meant motor size I was just talking about the length of the motor, there is a short and long shaft motors and it needs to match the boats transom. But that’s probably not the issue at all

lol thanks, glad it helped. I’ll take a pint!
I agree. This is GOLD
Thanks for the support!!

Literally answered all my questions and then some. Thank you sir!!
Awesome! Thanks for the view

This explains all to me - excellent video - Thanks so much
Awesome thank you for the view! I have another video that goes into changing trim levels in more detail here: ruclips.net/video/PYldlDtkZrI/видео.html
Awesome info man!
lol thanks for the support. Dude, we need to hit the water sometime. Your Piney vid was 🔥it was beautiful. Almost at 1k subs!!!!!!

It looks like our motor has the lever and worked perfectly,
thanks again👍
Can I see some pictures or a video of the way you have your crawdad set up inside??
Here is a vid of how I put it all together ruclips.net/video/EaHgf2HpWBM/видео.html
This should help new boaters.
Been fishing? 🎣
Man fishing’s been slow around here in TN. Been doing more kayak and wade fishing than anything. Keeping it simple

@@Skinnyriver It’s pretty damn close. It is just lower than the bottom of the transom. Maybe 3”.
The lock in neutral is needed when pull starting engine.
Really good point thanks
