These guys are so good it ridiculous!!! Eric is honking great notes everywhere while flying like an ace pilot and Mike's lead style is so fluid and beautiful ...what an awesome pair combined with a monster bass player and the drummer ... whoever he is ... just amazing!
I have been to the best concerts since the 70s, i've seen the best guitarists in the world ,i saw eric mid 80s, 90s, and recently saw him in denver co., and hes better than ever, his tone, his playing , He is the best guitarist i have ever seen live, and hes not even my hero, my hero is johny hiland, but i have never seen nobody like eric,, i have never heard a guitar sound so clean at the speed he plays!!
@@stevekirby7333 I was fortunate to get to see him at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta many years ago. After hearing Upside Downside on a local jazz station I was hooked, he will always be one of my favorite guitarists
You can see that these two gentlemen have a great deal of respect for one another. I just love the way Mike sits there and watches Eric jam. When appropriate he stands up and provides accompaniment. Eric stands back and admires when it's Mike's turn. I wish I could find a soul brother like that. Mike's got the "jiggy leg" LOL. And the rhythm section just locks it up. Great performance.
Eric could play Wes Montgomery & Barney Kessell note-for-note when he was 15, 16 years old. According to him, _poorly;_ and then, on to Hendrix. And Mike Stern, ditto - except he went the exact opposite direction. Boy oh boy, if I understood the aspect of the music biz that made it so economically unfeasible to START a band together, PLAY in it and STAY in it, I sure would change that. Remember BANDS? Remember E.S.P.? Not the guits, though they're fine too, I mean like when people knew what each other were going to play next because they JUST DID. Aw shucks, I'll be cryin' in my Metamucil next. (ennybods know where i kin score sum MEGA-mucil?)
I love both these guys for different reasons. I swear though, when I saw Mike Stern with his band live, what blew my mind was the fact that he could play a solo all day if he wanted and never play a wrong note!!!
Eric is staggering. Have you heard another guitarist who can fire off 3 minutes of seamless musical dialogue, an orgy of invention and musicality like this?
Jeez, is there anything that Eric can't play ? I doubt it. And Mike's great kinda following along and adding his own jazzy chords with chorus overload. I kid, Mike has his own sound, really distinct you would never mistake him for someone else even if you were blind. I played the Manhattan song they did together just before this and my son from across the office asked me if it was Shawn Lane, what a compliment !
Eric Johnson is a great player, but he ain't "jazzed". He doesn't have a harmonic clue to approaching this from a jazz perspective. which takes nothing away from his musicianship whatsoever...he just ain't a jazz musician..but he is a superlative musician.
Eric has historical references and authentic approaches very interesting. Stern is a jazzer playing bebop lines into some blues. They complement each other and make it entertaining
Nonsense! Mike Stern was steeped in Rock music, and over his career, he has strongly melded Swing, Ballad, Hard Bop, Blues, Rock, and World music styles in his playing. His first gig out of college was Blood Sweat & Tears. Only one cat on that stage was hired by the demi-god Miles Davis. That does not detract from Eric's obvious skills, but as a voice, Mike Stern has way more language harmonically speaking. That's why cats call him 'Endless Stern'.
Barry Smith you know if les Paul was young and playing with them, he would’ve drove both of them up the wall. Remember, the guy was influenced by Django Reinhardt . He played licks into a different dimension, in circles and even worst, up the walls!
Just brings to mind that in 1989 Eric Johnson won a Grammy that year? Instead of Danny gatton who is clearly the better player over Eric that being said while Danny is my favorite Eric & mike are brilliant also and deserve mention as outstanding guitarists!
@@OlePistolCooperation I don't know what the hell effect Stern uses, but I have always hated his sound and melodic choices, ever since I saw him with Miles at that dreadful comeback show in 1981 at the Hollywood Bowl. And he can't swing for shit. This is a Basie-style groover and he sounds stiff as a cruise ship musician. Just my opinion.
I know. And I get that there was a bit of tongue in cheek in what you said and I do love EJ. I think his sound and touch are just glorious. However, I feel that this tune is right in Mike Stern's wheelhouse and not so much for Eric. EJ is struggling just a bit to address all the harmonic activity, whereas Stern is right at home and sails through the harmonic changes like he'd done it 10,000 times before, which he has. There are other tunes that these guys play together that are just the opposite, where EJ is totally at home and Stern has to work harder. That's part of what is so fascinating about their collaboration. In any case, I think we agree completely that these guys are a blast to watch/listen to!
I just woke up, so wasn't fully coherent! Thanks for the perspective, man. This is not my style of music, and i did not know/hear/see what you explained about the harmonic changes. The way I (an uneducated ear for this style) heard this was in Eric's favour. To me he seemed little bit faster, technical and precise. As you explained - there's more to it than what I was aware of. Like I said, this is in no way my style of music. I came here for EJ :) I should have just kept my comment to myself haha Peace dude!!
Peace to you! And never keep your comments to yourself! I (and a lot of other people) enjoy discussing music even when -- or especially when -- we don't come to the same conclusions. Well, you and I do both agree that EJ is great.
The rhythm section is playing a shuffle when Eric is soloing though. They switch to a full swing feel when Mike was blowing so I think they played appropriately for their choruses?
Have to admire EJ for branching out though. Definitely Mike is at home with the be-bop, but Eric didn't fall back on the Cliffs of Dover stuff, he stuck with what was appropriate.

That Eric Johnson guy is beyond belief!
Love how Mike Stern swings. And Eric Johnson is, well, Eric Johnson. A surprisingly great musical pairing.

Chris Maresh is laying it down. Fell in love with his bass playing in Alien Love Child back in the late 90's. Eric's secret weapon.

This guy can JAM ! GREAT BASSSSSSSS 🙂😎✌🙋♂️
yeah he is great .seen him a few times with eric. awesome

eric johnson is off the charts !!!!! as is mike stern !!!! , hope they do another album together. it would be great.

Mike Stern giving a lesson on developing ideas.
Mike Stern loves his chorus and chair.
Give these guys a Grammy. Eric who knew you could play like that! got the chills going down my spine was great!
Just smoking. Eric, Mike, and that rhythm section are on fire.
bassist knows his craft....smart moves all around.
Nice to hear EJ swing and change it up from his usual approach. I get the feeling that these guys would not hesitate to take a bullet for each other.
Good to see Eric jazzed and in top form!!

Mike's got nice chops, can't say I'm crazy about his tone... The man can play though... Love Eric !
Awesome!
awesome !!!
feel it alllll line up wen stern starts his solo.......
chingonsisimo me pregunto porque eric jhonson siempre se voltea pa otro lado donde nadie lo ve tokar
Eu não diria isso em inglês: Ele pode estar envergonhado na frente de Stern
Fender VS Yamaha. Hehehe..
they are awesome. Love...
If anybody in either camp is reading this can you please do this again sometime soon. Cheers.
I've seen Mike in NY several times and this match up trips me out, I like it, but it seems like something else.
Mike Stern great Jazz Master. Eric Johnson Great Rock, Fusion, Country, Acoustic and all around playing Master.

you can really tell here how much Eric loved Les Paul
texas swing is not dead !!
Mike is swingin' hard Jack.
like how rhythm section swings more jazzy when mike plays
Eric is totally like "dude I took my sip of water, now I'm ready" And he's still playing. Lol.

I have to learn Eric's footwork at 1:54.
Trygve Knudsen Its the ghs boomer nickel rocker shoelaces!
Yeah. lol. A modified moonwalk.
You've spotted the secret key, now I can also play that! THANX!
more of a moon scrape than a walk lol
What Eric plays, the 3 or more minutes solo is simply astounding. Nobody is this fluent. Not Hendrix, Page, Les, Beck...nobody
Barry Smith you know if les Paul was young and playing with them, he would’ve drove both of them up the wall. Remember, the guy was influenced by Django Reinhardt . He played licks into a different dimension, in circles and even worst, up the walls!
that red chair :)
Wow, this is a new side to EJ for me
Ohhhh
YABADABA DOOBA DOOBA DOO!!!!!
5:35 = no tone unsterned
lmao i love it
rillloudmother Good one!
hey jeff you got a brother like that....its me lets jam im in so. cal where are you
Eric knows Mike is really going to give it to him now, hence the nervous, long gulp of water 6:09
Who has the best hair.....
4;25..... i cant shuffffle!!!! help
I think the drummer is Steve Ferrone.
It’s Lionel Cordew. He’s played with Stern on and off, Spyro Gyra, Special EFX, Kirk Whalum etc... terrific drummer.
I hear Danny Gatton at 4:29
@steverinoarch.....good ear ...started at 4:17 👍
Just brings to mind that in 1989 Eric Johnson won a Grammy that year? Instead of Danny gatton who is clearly the better player over Eric that being said while Danny is my favorite Eric & mike are brilliant also and deserve mention as outstanding guitarists!
Yes!
Both are great, but Stern is and always will be number one.
is this before or after Mike's accident?
to jeff curran
Hmm … I am pretty sure Eric could fit some more reverb in there if he tried …
Has Stern ever thought about turning off the chorus effect? Just once?
it's not chorus

Mike Stern?

Beau son . Trop propre pour moi. Je préfère un son plus brut
THE DRUMMER DOES A HUMPA HUMPA BEAT!! WHY???
TBH Mike took over the scene, Eric was like trying to play jazz and doesn’t understand the time feel.

Johnson loose timing a lot of times, maybe bebop is not his favourite style.. Stern instead is so fluent and smooth
True, glad I'm not only one who hear's that, its all about time feel
This is not bebop, it's blues swing.
@@robertpalenkahu3259 "swing" does not justify lack of timing.. indeed it's precisely in swing that time feel is so important
