Most amazing thing about Mike Stern was after his blinding gig in Zürich, he went to his own merchandise table and signed the CDs he was selling and took time to chat. This made the evening extra special. Humble is an understatement
Just knowing that someone is out there that can create such an AMAZING sound, tone, music, and art is inspiring and hopeful for this Brave New World. THanks EJ!
I saw this tour in KC and it was fantastic. It really seemed like they had a great time playing together and I felt that they were both inspired by each other and were doing things they would not normally think of on their own. It was really great!
The first three minutes was something that I’ve never seen Eric do and it was mind blowing jazz lines and chords and then he switched to classic Eric. That’s versatility. No 1 in my book.
Jesus titti fuckin christ. I came for stern thinking that Eric Johnson was a guy that just plowed the penta up and down. Those bits before the distortion thou. Genious, fragile, accurate and just plain beautiful. Playing through and beyond the chords. I hate to say this. Having only seen his stuff from the 80’s. Eric Johnson. Genious.
Mike Stern is a great guy and a monster player - jeez Eric made him wait a long time to get his solo in but when he did he didn't disappoint saw Stern with Miles Davis in St. Louis playing a Fender Stratocaster and he killed it!
I've seen Eric play a dozen times in Austin. Dweedly-dweedly-doodly-doodly-doo. Same thing every time. Never an original idea. I haven't made it through an entire one of his performances yet because I get tired of the same old thing over and over and over. I doubt Eric can play through changes like Mike can.
@@Scott_works fool you once, shame on Eric Johnson. fool you TWELVE times, shame on you. Do you go so you can deliberately complain after (or during) the show?
@@unputer He's an amazing player. I kept hoping I could make it through a whole show but wasn't able to. I was never a huge SRV fan either, but there were a lot cover bands playing his stuff. There were other bands I preferred - The Brew, Monte Montgomery, Dave Seebree. There were once a lot of great bands there. I don't know about now. I have heard the city has changed a lot. I left Austin back at the end of 2005. I saw a lot of great music in the 9 years I lived there though.
I love Mike for his attitude and his playing and composition, but I can see like everyone watching who;s a musician, Eric has so much depth, he is traditional and radical at the same time, there's so much content in his playing, so much history, so much melody...and clearly not out of his comfort zone with jazzers, he can play anything....there's baroque in his broken chords...it's immeasurable. Tho to be fair, Mike carries a lot of tradition in his playing to, he's also well informed. Wonderful that they got together and shows Mike's class.
I loved how Mike Davis watched that intro solo with an entranced grin, and also the drummer smiling and shaking his head to a piece he's undoubtedly heard many times.
I saw these guys play together at the Blue Note in NYC and it was a remarkable show. Eric really dug deep during that show and it was a real testament about how much even these great players have in reserve. This was before Mike had fallen and fractured his wrists. He was so loved by the musical community that they supported him through a recovery which has allowed him to return to his phenomenal form. Both of these guys have such unique voices that there is no situation in which you could not identify who the player was taking a lead regardless of the tune or venue.
Saw him the first time at The Berklee College of Music for the Ah Via Musicom! tour. Had the shirt forever until a girlfriend's dog got jealous and shredded it:). He was also great with G3.
Also with Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Dennis Chambers, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Jack Dejohnette. The list goes on.... Yeah Id say he's pretty good.
Anyone know if the first 3:14 mins is an actual (jazz) standard and what that is? Or is it fairly improv . . ? Love the flaunting with jazz world. Suits him well!!
All due respect to Mike Stern for his amazing talent. But with that said, Eric Johnson is, in my mind, will always be the greatest guitarist ever. And not just for his ungodly ability to play, but his complete understanding behind the music. It's one thing to be able to play what and how he can play, but it's another thing to be able to write it as well. Again, no dis to Mike Stern. He's great too.
I simply can't find a REASON to rank them. I'm not wicked-good myself, but I know several semi-famous dudes - and it's really, really weird to read a review of, say, a Julien Kasper CD - and they go yakkin' off about Larry Carlton & Robben Ford and all these "influences" they mash in there. And, he actually works with chords and scales and MUSIC, He hasn't copped a guitar lick since he was maybe 25. There ARE guitarists who still work that way, and I have no problem, there's room for everybody. If I had to list who I listened to most, it would be McLaughlin and Morse - and they're almost exact opposites! What's the single best food? What's you favorite molecule of oxygen? And I just ain't gonna go to some stupid desert island.
Yes. He did his homework. Knows all the modes, scales, and the fretboard extremely well. The dexterity in his fingers, and his right hand technique is simply amazing. I don't ever say He is Better than this Guy, or He is better than that Guy. Its Not a Competition, but Man He is way UP There as far as Talent, and executing chordal changes, and leads. Its ingrained in his head, and his fingers just go off from a thought. Sometimes when I see players of this Caliber , I just wonder why the Hell do I play? Its Fun.
@@dogfacedboy6947 your right And your two choices are excellent. None of these guys at this level are in some warped competition. They just love music and devoted thier lives to furthering the artform.
Yeah and at least he's humble enough to step back and play rhythm for Eric! Stern is awesome, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone match Eric in this style. He's like a machine here. LOL
Nice video...except gravity shifted 90 degrees (gotta love cell phones LOL). I love Eric's solos that start clean and then go full electric blazing at the end. I've seen him many times and this is some of his best playing.
Yeah, I don't really care sacrificing my neck while watching EJ's best performance. As long as I can hear all his heavenly notes penetrating into my heart and soul.
I seen these two cats when they toured together. Love them both. Eric Johnson was an influence of mine pre-improv and jazz. Eric has written some great stuff. But as a musician leaves "straight" music behind, Stern becomes the BIGGER influence. At least for me. Now the public doesn't get jazz and Eric Johnson's straight writting had to be the bigger draw. Either way, being able to put aside egos and tour together was a truly amazing thing. Both of these players have their place in my personal journey in music and guitar and as weird a show as it was, IT WAS GREAT!!!! THANK YOU BOTH ERIC AND MIKE. Cheers🥂🍺

It’s how he makes money.
Mike is a legend but he sits down and looks in awe at johnson, that shows what a master stern is, he is totally blown away by another master.
Thanks for posting....what a video and rendition of "Cliffs of Dover." We know EJ is a master but so is Mike Stern. My overall rating is WOW!
Just knowing that someone is out there that can create such an AMAZING sound, tone, music, and art is inspiring and hopeful for this Brave New World. THanks EJ!
honestly, this is one of the most passionate Eric's live performances i've seen

Most definitely, Mike clearly brings out the best of Eric.
2 of my guitar heroes together... I can die happily!
Seriously, this is like my 1990 ultimate guitar hero jamming with my 2000 ultimate guitar hero, it's temporally displacing me.
I WAS THERE AND THEY JAMMED!!!

how brave and funny guy Stern is... "So this is your beautiful song? Let me improvise on my way...and I´m always on fire!""
They are in a different landscape, play in the different field... Love to see both playing in their awesomenes:)
Brave? Not at all, he knows full well what he's capable of.
And he played with Miles.

Makes all the difference. So many great musicians I've heard then checked out have 'Played with Miles' on their CV.

Never forget doing sound @ SFCC for Stern/Berg, Chambers the drummer. Mind blown.

Beyond ridiculous. That intro was raw and mind blowing. Beast mode.

My man Eric standing on the walls and shit.
this is the funniest comment i've read in my entire life. God bless you, man =)

Man. I remember that song playing on the radio in the 90s. 93 maybe? The times were changin that's for sure. Music wise. Man it was fun.
I havent seen a One Man Band Since James Taylor , Never seen a one man Totally Awesome Artist tell a story threw music ,,, until till now , love it

Mike Stern solo was a 2.5 minute master class in jazz and blues guitar phrasing
wow this is about as full on jazz ive heard him do
what a player
Eric Johnson truly one of the top 3 guitarists in the world.
my other 2 would be metheny and carlton
mike stern is far better IMO
Yes but my other two would be John Petrucci and Syn Gates
@@ggh_-ts6pn Frank Gambale could take on both of them at the same time

That intro is longer than many versions of the song! Not that I'm complaining.
yes
Blown away!😮 like everyone else watching.
Gotta luv Eric Johnson
Is it me or it´s the video like... ¡hanging in there like in a cliff?! Two monsters. The joy of music and the guitar. My respects for the band.
Fantastic!
Una de las más hermosas intros de Cliff of Dovers ❤
Mike's playing very passionate and they both spit fire out of their guitar.

Really great quality considering it was recorded during an earthquake!!!😮😅
Truthfully, wanted more Stern. Didn’t care for Eric’s long extended solo much at all.
Does anyone hear Eric improvising over "Misty?"
Eric's playing makes my head spin! (or is it the camera guy...?)
Cool to see Eric Johnson with another master guitarist. Would've loved to hear him do something with Allan Holdsworth.
Holdsworth is dead lol
Sounds like 2 violins playing at the same time. This is such a badass version of Cliffs of Dover.
