    incredible scene, cy watching his chance at revenge slip through his fingers by way of his own theatrics, simultaneously being unable to quit the farcical preaching and rambling, and also confronting -through leon and con's incompetence - his own declinining worth. 'I wish fucking eddie was here' he must think as con's bloated face leers away from the door, possibly ruining Leon's execution in the same manner Leon ruined reverend Crame's. masterful

    Powers Boothe is so awesome. In the end you realize that Cy Tolliver, despite the upper-class facade he puts on, is way more fucked up and sadistic than Al. Al has a soul beneath all his evil, but with Cy it's like there's something below all of that - some kind of hate or something - that just makes him so much worse.

      Al had the hope of something better for his people, to justify the suffering.
      Cy had no hope. Everything was rotten, and he didn't pretend otherwise.

      I've watched "Deadwood" 784 times. My conclusion is that Tolliver is actually just a bully, compensating for his being a coward. Swearengen is neither, but rather a realist, simply. Cy gets by while he can. Al makes his own way.

      ''Dujie''. It's a slang term for heroin, but apparently far too new (the internet says it originated in the 1950s) to be accurate to ''Deadwood''.

    Cy suffers (gets stabbed and treated like a dog by Hearst) because he mocks God, The Spirit, by not participating in the raising-up of the Community. He's guilty of the charge quoted in Matthew 12:31. But, even though he continues to mock, he sets himself on a path toward redemption, even praying for the first time through Leon. He acts as if it's all a joke to him. But it is? His hammy revival tent performance seems to tip us off that he's scared that he's beyond forgiveness. Crammed, avatar of The Spirit come to help Cy, says "I'll speak to you another time."
    The greatest travesty of Deadwood's cancellation is that we never got to witness Cy's full transformation from a woman-hating blasphemer into a redeemed early feminist. Fuck.

    • @Studentofgosset
      @Studentofgosset 4 года назад +4

      He was mocking the reverend, a devil citing scripture. Illustrating the farcical nature of people acting "holy". There was no redemption.

      @@Monk_ChudIt wouldn’t have been cringe or preachy. Cy still would have cantankerous and horrible, but he would have left the Bella to Joanie thereby empowering her and encouraging her independence. He already did this in season one and it wasn’t cringe.

      @@StudentofgossetHe was mocking, but Crammed was no devil by this point. For someone like Cy, even mockery is a step toward something new. He literally says (to no one) “Deception don’t preclude the search for fuckin conviction”. He’s trying in his own shitty way.

The only thing "Special" about those freaks is that that's all they got. Nothing to admire. It's a sad and lonely life. They just don't know how hollow they are.
