Milch has said it was his plan for Cy, in spite of his evil hatred of women, to have become the town's first feminist. Such was his arc. Would have been a compelling end for the character. The absence of a Deadwood S04 is truly the greatest travesty of TV's new Golden Age.

That makes sense if he was going to become a feminist by stepping away from the Bella Union and his abuse of women and all of his underlings and handing it over to Joanie, who ACTUALLY cares about the people there, esp. the women. It's notable that every time Cy is threatened or cowed by Hearst, he takes his humiliation out on those weaker than him, esp his employees (see the scene where Ellsworth's body is paraded through the town for an example).
Powers Booth and Ian McShane are such powerful actors. You want the characters to die suffering slowly and at the same time you dint want them away. Such deliciously loathsome characters any good actor would love to tackle...

You know, during the part when Cy's imitating someone stammering Janine's name, he kinda delivers it in a sing-song fashion. Well, this answers the age-old question of whether Powers Boothe can sing... ^_^ (And, like his speaking voice, his singing voice is a beauty to behold! :D )
