  • Last month I decluttered OVER 500 items from my life, which feels amazing! But deciding to let go of something is only step one of the process. So today I want to take you along for the ever-important step 2, getting the things you’ve decided to let go of out of your life. And I want to share how I like to do this in a more responsible way.

Just a thought for anyone getting rid of things. If you check with local shelters that help abused people, they will take things like shampoos/conditioners that you may have used a couple of times but still has a lot of life left. If you have makeup that you didn’t use, they take that. Men’s and women’s and children’s items are needed. Sometimes women leave with nothing and they need everything. Sometimes they have teenage boys with them that need items too. When you find a place, the drop off is never at the home and you won’t know where the home is, but it is still verifiable that it will be used.

I feel like so many people make decluttering videos but I rarely see what happens after! Personally the after part is very overwhelming to me so I declutter slowly until I fill up a box then do these things to figure out where they can go. I like your methodized approach and I think that will make the process less daunting to me!

Totally with you on that! That’s why I wanted to make this video. Hopefully it can be helpful for the next time you declutter 🥰🥰

Hi Ashline. I really love your videos !
Before the subject of this one, I think there is a more important topic : "how to consume sustainably".
Because, if you don't overbuy, you don't over-clutter. For me, it's the n°1 point.
"Decluttering sustainably" is greenwashing for most people : "i got rid of my stuff donating to a shelter, I'm happy because I feel like a super-hero doing it, so I can buy again and throw systainably again".
This way of consuming wont solve the planet's issues. It is still energy consumption, material foraging, wastes gestion...
Reduce shopping, reduce waste : that's sustainably. Not : buy / declutter / give.
    Love from France.

I started the decluttering game on February 1st and it has been SO fun. I realize by letting go of the things we aren’t using, it’s making space for what we truly want to spend our time on.

I LOVED this video, thank you so much for raising awareness! H&M has an amazing program for recycling fabrics of any kind, even unusable. You can also donate old pillows, blankets or towels to animal shelters. For games, puzzles or books, donating to a youth center or a residence for the elderly is nice. Many stores also have a recycling program for empty or used makeup and beauty products. Here in Quebec, drugstores and Hudsons bay are good options. :)

I would add an extra tier which is barter/swap. You’re still exchanging value for items, so you feel like your item is truly wanted and going to a good home. It also relieves some of the financial guilt, just like selling does. 😊 I love this video! Not many RUclipsrs talk about what they do after they declutter ❤

I’m glad you have the bandwidth and energy to sort through the decluttered items. I,however, do not have either. For me, it’s donate or trash because I don’t want it hanging around my house any longer than it has to. In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t make any difference anyway. Great declutter though.

If you don't have the time to sell items a consignment shop could be a good option if you can find one in your area. I don't have to bother taking pictures, negotiate pricing or meet up with anyone and you support a local business. If something doesn't sell, you can opt for the items to be returned back to you to follow this hierarchy with or they often will donate the items for you.

I was surprized that you don't have plastic recycling facilities? Is it only paper that you can put into the 'recycable' bin?..

I don't sell anything I can't get at least $20 for because I need to feel compensated for my time in packing it up and posting it. We have lots of second hand shops for donating things in our area, but we're also really lucky because we also have a "free shelf" just around the corner. Things which I don't think are good enough for the second hand shop (eg paper binders, ripped Little Golden books that could be used for crafts etc) I put on the free shelf. I usually check a week later to see if it's gone. So far everything has, otherwise I'd just take it back and put it in the trash.

So usually keep it up for 3-5 days before reducing the price. Then I’ll do it a few more times until it sells. Usually works well 😉
