    I don't even plan on driving anytime soon but i think its useful information just to help other family members create a budget

    I’m glad you accounted for a monthly maintenance line item. No matter what the car’s age, you WILL need to pay for maintenance (unless you’re into that kind of thing and can actually do it yourself)

      If it's a new car and has warranty you don't have to worry.
      But still, owning a car is super expensive and a bit pointless if you have good public transport, taxi/uber/bolt and work from home

      Even then you will still have to budget for parts. At my local auto store it’s around $50-60 in parts to do an oil change.

    150x 12 x 2 is 3600. So you've more than bought that car again in the next 2 years by paying for insurance. Are people wrecking a car every 2 years? Those insurance fees are a rip off!

      Yeah it appear to be that way but its better safe than sorry.
      Except health insurance, some people have calculated that saving up the money you pay for health insurance in america would help pay for health costs out of pocket instead. This is because many insurance companies go "oh we can't insure you since we're not affiliated with this hospital 😁✨️"
      So you've been paying them monthly just for them to not help you in the end

    My insurance is 40$ a month. I have no experience and an old car.
    How does anyone pay 150$ a month for insurance, that's insane!

      Do you live in Canada ? The cheapest insurance I've ever had I think was about $60 and that was being over 25, a woman, and only having liability coverage

      Exactly. When I had my old car my insurance was $50 a month, with my new one it's $150. Honestly I'd rather just drive my old car

    yeah I just bought a car for 13100zl (3275$) and just the registration, tax and inspection costs were 542zl (135.5$)
    + 500zl(125$) for AC, full OBD check and a little repair and I'm still waiting for the most expensive ones wish me luck😭
    edit: they said its gonna cost a couple thousand for the little repairs, looking for another mechanic rn 😭

    Seriously, be careful! I have to pay $250 in insurance, and that's the cheapest I can get it. Always check the insurance on cars. (FYI, I haven't had any accidents or tickets)

      Same it was 240 but they upped it to 260. Gonna have to shop around. Before I got the rate I have now the insurance company I was with wanted something insane like 550 a month

    $7!? My MIL gave me her old car. A 2005 totalled toyota camry and told me it would be like $50 to register it so she would do it. I told her it wouldn't be $50, it would be a few hundred. All said and done, I think it was like $800 plus the $300 to start my insurance and whatnot. Thank god she's wealthy because I knew I couldn't afford to make the car legal, even getting it for free.

    And people wander whyi own a moped. It was a 4,000 loan for the everything including fees and gas cost me about $20 a month. And i live in LA. I bought it in 2021 and my last payment is this october. Plus it was brand new.

      If you don’t have a car, you’re most likely paying for Ubers or the bus everyday and at the end of the month you can end up spending the same as you would pay insurance, gas, etc. Most people can’t afford to save for a car AND emergencies.

      @@NoScrubZz where i live, a one way bus ticket for adults is $2. if you do that twice a day, at LEAST five days a week for a month that’s $80, and that doesn’t even include if you take the bus on your off days or more than twice a day. $80 is about what i pay for car insurance. taking the bus can be expensive.

      A monthly bus pass at most costs a few hundred bucks (the most I’ve seen is $180/month). That is literally nothing compared to the cost of a car.

    I know it was used just for an example, but don't buy a dodge dart. I own a 2013 1.4l turbo limited for the record. They aren't reliable, so many recalls, transmission is shit and they have a ton of electric issues. Also, double check what gas you have to get. I have to get premium gas (91 octane or higher). It gets expensive fast.

    because I live in one of the most expensive states for new drivers insurance, my monthly payment for insurance is almost $400 a month. double that with relatively low wages and almost 30% of my income being taken for tax purposes with rent food gas and no other insurance, I am struggling.
