Two real simple things you can do: Number one is check the fluids, usually a good indication if someone took care of the car or not. Number two is hold your hand at the end of the exhaust with the car running (make sure it's a cold start). If you see oil on your hand it could be the pistons, sleeves, or in the case of a Subaru probably a head gasket. There are also forums for just about every car on the market and if your buying something common the known faults will be well documented.

Lexus SC300 owner, let me tell you. As a first car, this car is amazing. But the problems that come with it... I'm just someone with bad luck in general, so fixing cars up myself, something always happens, but they're reliable, and timeless beauties that I adore!
My first car was a 2015 BMW 435 and I honestly regretted it long term because of the insurance, continued payments to the bank, and storage... now I just bought a Datsun 280zx (yes the unpopular one) and love it.
8th gen civic si. Cheap, parts available, very easy to learn on, huge aftermarket scene with thousands out there willing to give advice, and when i went FBO and tune it honestly had enough pickup to be fun. I think having a affordable dream car is definitely helpful. For me, that affordable dream car is the R33 GTR, and even than they’re still quite far our of my range, like i can afford to pay like 100K for that.
Gosh, its so weird hearing someone on the internet mention Taco John's because it feels like whenever I mention it to any of my friends, none of them have even heard of it!

Got a fiesta st mk7 as my first car, absolutely love the thing and I think for the price one of the best options I had seen as a new WRX is basically about 130k here in the Netherlands because of emissions regulations, also just ordered a new set of wheels, can't wait for them to arrive
about a month ago I bought a wrx wagon for my first car and have been fixing it up. Its been hard not being able to drive it yet, but I'll be able to this weekend so I'm pretty excited
I got a 03 Wrx wagon as my first car and let me tell you it’s worth it. Everyone always calls it an outback or just a weird wagon but once they go for a ride they get what’s up with the wagon mafia.
My first car was a 2001 audi tt quattro. It was when I changed the clutch that I realized not all cars need to be all-drive, or as some people say "front wheel drive with rear wheeled assist,".
That’s my dream car ngl I am wanting that as my first car but I don’t think I could get enough money to pay for the work to be done within even the first year since the cars are now 5k for 150k miles…
@@stahr26 it is a great car, it isn't the fastest thing but it sure is fun. I bought the car for $2200 2 years ago. Replaced the clutch, fusebox, alternator, shocks, etc. I think honestly (if your doing the work yourself) I only have about $3800 in it, which includes buying it. Honestly parts aren't that bad for it as the car is basically a 2 door golf . It's just finding specific parts for it, such as body parts, that make it expensive.
I just saw a jetta with a fitment industries windshield banner and what looked to be artisa wheels, and now I'm watching a new fitment industries upload. Today is a good day
My first car I bought was my 2005 Ranger (which I bought used in 2007, and it only had 6500 miles on it). In 2016, I bought a 2012 Escape, and relegated the Ranger to a spare vehicle. In 2018, I traded in the Escape for a new Escape and finally sold the Ranger to a kid in the neighborhood who needed a first car. I still have the '18 Escape, but have considered trading it in for either a '24 Escape or Santa Fe.
I had options and I probably chose the more expensive one(in the long run). The Mazda RX-8 $4,500 + $1,800 to get it fully healthy. Now the real transformation begins

Currently watching this great vid after I bought my first car just over a month ago and passed my test in January. My first car is a Baby Blue Audi A4 B7 got it for a good price and payed off my insurance for the year so very happy with that. When I was B7 hunting I found some stupid prices for ridiculous mileage near my area that were on sale. And I found my baby after 5 days of hunting. Thing is that it was over 100km away so I asked the owner if he could meet me halfway and he was very nice to do so. He was an old dude (bonus 😁), and the car has been treating me well ever since. Just getting a few minor engine problems fixed. Good few mods on the way. Moral of the story is dont jump the gun when you see a car you like and want keep looking. There’s always a better one for a better price. Just make sure the engine is good 😌👍🏾.
Great choice! My first car I also got this year was an A4 B8.5 Quattro. I love how practical these are, while still being upscale and affordable (under 12 grand for a really nice one). 4-doors, decently roomy and upscale interior, and a surprisingly large trunk. Especially since these A4's offer modern features of electronic assists like blind spot monitoring and backup camera, heated and electronic multi-zone adjustable seats, keyless entry, along with AWD and traction control (fantastic in the winter). I also like how Audi is more of an understated brand that's not as pretentious as Mercedes or BMWs, while still offering similar levels of quality. My other options for 4-door AWD sedans were Subarus, which were either too expensive, or old/thrashed with nowhere near the same amount of features as these Audi's for the price.
I'm still wanting a rx7 fc for my first car (I'm 24). I understand it's a high maintenance car especially with it being almost 40 years old, and I'm honestly okay with all I do to it for like 6 months to a year being maintenance it's over due for, because that sounds like an adventure to me. I guess I still get to make it scream even if it's mostly stock na 13b. 😃
@@JosueHernandez-nu5cp I have no clue, if you willing to put up with it then go ahead and try. Ohh protip don't try to remove really tight 6 spline bolts with a 6 spline wrench because you're gambling on if you strip the corners of the head down.
I absolutely LOVE the second gen Subaru Legacy sedan. It was my third car, first was a 1988 Nissan Sentra 2 door 4 speed, second was a 1988 Buick Lesabre with the 3.8 V6. The Sentra was very slow but it took a beating and made smiles, the buick was barely faster than a D16 EG Hatch (no v-tech) to 60, but somehow topped out around 145. But the Legacy.... That was my girl.
I needed a sporty daily I can also go on road trips with and bring my dog. I wanted it to have some modern luxury but also not break the bank. Got a 2018 Focus ST 👌
My first car was a 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 S and bought it myself in June 2019 for about $3200. I then sold it and got a 2018 Honda Accord 1.5T Sport in October 2020 with the help of my pops (only credit-wise; I paid insurance, down payement, and monthly payments myself). I then traded in the 1.5T for a 2020 2.0T in December 2021 (The bank thought it was better to just buy off the 1.5T since it was more convenient for them considering how not great my interest was at the time of getting the 1.5T (16%), nice no debt there). This was my first time doing it on my own without any credit bumps or having my pops co-sign. I'm currently doing well with the payments and I'll be doing quite a bit of cosmetic (maybe performance) modding since I'll be having it for 3 years.
Got my dream car basically already :) a 2007 Hyundai Tiburon GT, got it for cheaper than you would imagine, is the most reliable car within my whole family, gets a lot of looks with some simple body and wheel work and a cold air intake and a full cat back exhaust.. hell i've even gapped a couple other competitors before like a BRZ. Its a super fun car to drive, of course it's not a ferrari but that's what makes it special.. no one knows what it is.
Just have confidence! My dad’s first manual car was an Integra (i believe this or some classic Porsche, he had a lot of manual cars). He didn’t know manual and drove it from the dealership to home. It was a 45 minute drive and he made it safe n sound
Just watch RUclips videos, I currently don’t got my permit and don’t got a family with a car, but I been learning a lot from youtube and I feel mad confident driving manual
So idk how this affects insurance and stuff but if you buy a car from an individual agree that its being sold for 1k. Even if you pay more for it, the dmv will see that you paid 1k for it and tax you based off that. Had you put anything more, youll pay more for taxes. I didnt realize this until i was buying a car from a dude. Paid 100$ for something i paid 6k for.
My first car was a SN95 mustang, base model v6 my parents bought for 1k. I loved that thing as a teen. Then I got a '86 Nissan Sentra for 2k, that grew on me even though it barely did 65mph but it got almost 40mpg. Thing was my first manual car I owned, and had a carburetor. Now I'm looking at getting myself a fun car again since I can afford to put time into it as an adult
First car: 2.2 liter 4 cylinder chevy s10. No regrets at all, it was perfect for teaching me how to drive a slow car fast. Second car: 6.1 liter 8 cylinder chrysler 300 srt8. No regrets at all, very fast, very reliable. First car I bought at $800. Second one was $5500.
That’s extremely overpriced yes it will run till you die but it’s 21 years old and has almost 200k miles maybe if you can get it under 1,400 me personally I would not give more than 1k
Will you get 2.4k dollars of value from it, probably yeah. But is it worth 2.4, I'm not sure. That's a car that is a cheap daily and will treat you well. Go for it!
Another thing to mention, quadruple check the car inside and out in person. Finding out you dont have rear seatbelts and a kinda rusty trunk interior is not fun.

1)I’m not 100% sure but Go at the end of a month because that’s when the dealership is trying to sell cars more hastily and just get rid of them so you can agree on a better price 2) don’t get emotionally attached to it, and get some leverage on them by finding a different deal and if you disagree you could just say “okay I’ll just go find other deals” making them want to keep you as a customer 3) don’t get up-selled on things you don’t need 4) don’t think about just the price of the car but also at minimum a month’s expenses and insurance etc
This goes to all those newly Enlisted in the military, too. You cant afford the 2020 Mustang GT with 16-22% APR. No matter what your marriage arrangement is.
I’m going to work my first professional job and my parents wanted to ‘help’ me find a car. What they ended up doing was telling me that in a suv, I’m going to get flat tires, run out of gas, can’t haul things in the back, and will flip over in an accident, and will get stuck in the mud. Then they took me to a GMC dealer where I was pressured to like the GMC canyon $48K (over my budget) that has lower fuel economy and about 18K more expensive for a small interior and bed. I plan to move in about a year and I don’t want to have a truck. All I want is an suv, that costs around $33K with good fuel economy. Although they will co-sign, I’ll be making all the payments. They have a different idea of what kind of car I want and I know that they have more experience with cars and ownership than me.
Any car you're interested in, take it to a mechanic for a check over before parting with your money. A $40 pre-purchase inspection could save you a ton of money and hassle if they find things it'll need, to keep it safe to be on the road. I'm a 3rd year apprentice mechanic, and in that time only seen 2 pre-purchase inspections, but have seen a dozen cars that people have just recently bought, that are borderline scrap value. Throwing away $40 is a lot better than buying something for cheap but has $2000+ in missed service items or mechanical issues.
1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Bought it from a guy who was in the middle of restoring it. He worked at a dealership and fell in love with a Hurst Olds 442 that some one had traded in. I paid $1750 for it. It was mechanically sound. BUT the wheels (classic Crager 5 spokes) were not round. Around town it was ok. At extra legal speeds the car would vibrate. The girls loved it though. It was all about the vibration, not the car itself. After about 70 MHP it would smooth out and you'd only be hitting the high spots on the wheels. I only had it for about 8 months until the 1st snow hit the ground. Even with 300 pounds on rock salt in the trunk it was a bitch to drive in the snow. I decided that I enjoyed living too much to attempt to drive that as my daily. I ended up with a 1984 S10 Blazer 4x4.
11:43 My first car was a 1993 Toyota Celica GTI, it had so much rust I fixed a hole in the FR fender with a sponge and some glasfibre putty.. then painted over it, it was so trashed I fixed what I could and sold it when I was like 18.. I got this car when I was 14 and man I miss it so much, there’s nothing like it and even though it probably scrapped by now I just wish I could have it back
I was a bit pressured by my dad to get an automatic 2011 Honda Civic lx sedan, I was happy at first until I started to learn about cars and realized that I could’ve waited for that Subaru sti, after 5 years it’s finally paid off but good thing is that I’m trying to save up for that subi cuz man I’ve been having my eyes on that thing for a very long time
Your dad was just looking out for you. 🙂 Nothing says "I care about you" like wanting you to own a safe, reliable car. Now that you've experienced car ownership, go for that Subaru!
I financed a brand new kia forte. Hated myself, it was boring, cvt, nothing fun. However, I decided to put on an Exhaust, then an intake, added a nice little lip spoiler, added street coilovers, added a rear sway bar, and finally a got new Konig Oversteers, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (A/S) I LOVE MY CAR NOW, ITS JUST A MOM CAR BUT IT’S MY MOM CAR. I MAKE ALL THE PAYMENTS AND I CAN STILL HAVE FUN IN THE TWISTIES. All the mods made it into a really good car to handle even as an, FF. Also, it’s new, naturally aspirated (which I love) I have nothing to worry about ever. CVT bothered me for a while but it has sport mode, which actually enhances throttle response and is very fun in the twisties. I love it now, so fun to drive. And great on gas!
Practicality, performance and reliability is what I look after. Sedans, hatchbacks and wagons are my favorite types of cars. I do also like pick-up trucks and SUVs but not as much as I like sedans or hatchbacks. Also, I may be a car guy but I'm not really into car modifications. In games, I usually keep my car's appearance stock.
My first car wasn't really much of a choice- was broke, got a family deal, my parents were willing to pay insurance. The 4-cylinder 8th gen Accord isn't really all I wanted in a car- A/T, not sporty, two extra doors. But it sure is everything I need. Efficient, reliable, not underpowered... but not powerful enough to get into trouble.
Thats everything I wanted in my first car , well shit it was one of my dream cars as a kid: however I just bought one for 2.5k and i thought it was in good condition for the price until I looked under the driver side and saw a lot of rust from the rocker panel and under. Im a little bummed out that fixing the rust will put it on the price of just buying one for 7-9k
@@femi8414 Personally I'd rather have had a manual transmission, a coupe, and/or a V6, but for the amount of money I spent ($3k in 2019) I definitely could have ended up with a worse car. The handling may not be on par with a sports car, but I can see why Honda kept the dual wishbone in the front for so long despite costs. And yeah, having to spend that much on repairs sucks. For 9k you could almost get a V6 (well, maybe in 2019 before car prices rose). Personal recommendation: Upgrade the rear sway bar, especially if you got an LX. You can use the rear sway bar (+matching bushings!) from a 2008 TSX (same part but stiffer) or a 2009 TL (different part, still fits, and even stiffer). Perhaps the body roll isn't so abysmal on OEM struts (I'm on Duralast and they're crap), but IMO the TL RSB is the best thing I've done to that car. (Other upgrades being a head unit, speakers, and a powered sub.)

First car was a 2016 Ford Focus SE hatchback. Not the coolest car ever and was originally going to save for something cooler but My grandparents business was getting rid of it a bunch of these and offered me it for free. But the catch was the previous driver Never took care of it. Garbage everywhere, stains on the headliner, exterior Rust, very dirty. But I decided not to give up on it and took a whole weekend to clean it and eventually took it to a guy my dad knew to remove the rust of it. Now it looks like a brand new car and I Honestly I’m actually glad I took it, because I never really considered all the stuff mentioned in the video back then. It saved me a lot of money and luckily I had no engine issues as of six months of owning it. Plus I don’t really have a good place to store besides on the driveway and Minnesota winter can be brutal sometimes. I’ll get something cooler at a later point but for now i’m happy with what I got.

That’s my dream car ngl I am wanting that as my first car but I don’t think I could get enough money to pay for the work to be done within even the first year since the cars are now 5k for 150k miles…

Lots of solid advice in this one. When you kids are searching keep this one the back pocket.
I'm still wanting a rx7 fc for my first car (I'm 24). I understand it's a high maintenance car especially with it being almost 40 years old, and I'm honestly okay with all I do to it for like 6 months to a year being maintenance it's over due for, because that sounds like an adventure to me.

Most important rule of all: it's your first car, you're gonna crash it. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. So don't buy something that you'd be too attached or you'll disappoint yourself
Disagreeing to the fullest extent
If you careless when you drive by all means just say that bro
@@kenshinmiguel9183 it's not about being reckless, it's about having to learn everything. We all make mistakes, could be an accident that writes off the car or it could just be a few curb rashes. We all make mistakes and first drivers should learn that
I was able to buy my neighbors 06 manual tsx two years ago as my first car (manual at that) and I’ve been in love with ever since
Once the used car markets go back to the way it was I'm sticking with my E-bike
