" Elisabeth Anne Broderick is an American woman who murdered her ex-husband, Daniel T. Broderick III, and his second wife, Linda Broderick, on November 5, 1989. At a second trial that began on December 11, 1991, she was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder and later sentenced to 32-years-to-life in prison. The case received extensive media attention. Several books were written on the Broderick case, and a TV movie was televised in two parts. In 2020, an 8-episode miniseries was produced and aired about Broderick. An article about Broderick's case in the Los Angeles Times Magazine led to the production of a television film called (Part 1) A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story, and (Part 2) Her Final Fury: Betty Broderick, The Last Chapter (1992), where Meredith Baxter portrayed Betty, Stephen Collins portrayed Dan, and Michelle Johnson portrayed Linda Kolkena. Baxter received an Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Broderick. The murder was also dramatized in the season 4 episode of Deadly Women, titled "Till Death Do Us Part." I've always said she snapped. She stood by him while he finished not just med school but also law school. She raised his kids took care of his home and life. He dumps her for younger woman, flaunts it in her face. Then he takes her kids and cuts off her funds. Murder is wrong but who wouldn't snap?

I agree, my ex did pretty much the same thing but he was always a lazy bum. He just had a new baby and after not seeing our 15yr old son for almost a year, he picked him up a couple weeks ago to go see his new baby brother. My son had me pick him back up bc he was having anxiety attacks and needed to come home asap. I’ve been worrying myself sick bc he’s really holding so much anger, sadness, and just disappointment bc his dad just basically forgets all about him and yet he knows he’s doting over his new baby with his new young girlfriend. Breaks my heart 💔

I used to side with her a lot, but the more I know about the case, the more it seems all three formed a very toxic triangle, with mean, always angry, jealous and possessive Betty being on top of it, but extremely self-centered Dan and arrogant, golddigging Linda not far behind in toxicity.

Thanks for saving me the time to write this. This is why woman say they aren't starting from scratch with no man and strive for their own independence. Today's young (men & women) ppl thing that women want independence because of the love of money and material things. Tbis sums up why women need to create a path for themselves. This is one of many stories from that time period.

I think he pushed her. She sacrificed her youth and freedom to help him achieve his goals. She allowed herself to become financially vulnerable and he rewarded her trust by throwing her out on the street. Can you imagine that after the church told you your whole life your obedience would be rewarded? And for him to call her old knowing that she can't control her age?! He is an abuser even if he didn't hit her.

While I agree, I do still question how much was him egging her on and how much was her just being a complete nut job?
I wouldn't even say she was "just crazy", that sort of thing was kind of just a product of her upbringing. But she set his stuff on fire multiple times. Once he got remarried, I know it's hard to start from scratch but, let it go.
I don't mean it to sound so harsh, because he was complete scum. But she was given $9000 a month and she could have been using that to go back to school and further her own career. Many women do that without getting any money at all. I think she was a bit obsessive about him and his new wide and that obsession is what drove her crazy. Some times women just don't want to "let it go"
They have to somehow prove they can WIN. But what do you win if you do "reclaim your man"? Just a man that already cheated on you and would probably do it again.
Let the other woman have that mess. She was supposedly a really good mom, she should have just stuck with her kids. She lost her kids because she left them on HIS doorstep. People getting a lot less than $9000 a month find a way to get childcare so they can work. Her own kids turned against her because she was really crazy.
This whole thing was pretty toxic.
I think she had better options and was just stuck on somehow "winning" and she absolutely ended up losing

This doesn’t excuse the murder of two people. They may have treated her terribly but that doesn’t condone her actions. She could have moved on and made her own success story, instead she lost her children, and became obsessed with harassing and getting revenge on her ex-husband and his new wife. She’s a pathetic person who deserves to rot in jail.

I went through an almost identical situation with my ex husband. Married for 28 years, I raised our three children on my own because he worked on an oil rig and was never home. My whole life was raising my kids. I had no social life and spent almost every day at home. I didn't know anything other than being a homemaker. After the divorce, I ended up penniless with two older children who had to live with me in a rental property because I couldn't afford to rent on my own. He could afford a lawyer and I couldn't so he stiffed me out of my share of his Superannuation (4O1K) which was substantial. He quickly got remarried and 14 yrs later and in ill health, I'm still living with my two youngest. He barely sees his kids. Unless you've been through something like this yourself, don't judge others. I think I can certainly relate to Betty's situation. And like the juror, I'm surprised it took her so long too. If ever there was a case for justifiable homicide, this was it.

Something about it makes you feel out of control of yourself. Betrayal trauma is real. If you sat home and built him up and essentially contributed to his success in life and you are now in your mid 30’s to 40’s I can see how one would feel completely betrayed and hopeless, that’s especially sad, and I can’t say I can rationalize murder but I can say I understand..

If you know your ex you share children with is seriously mentally ill why would ever handle it this way? Taunt them? That’s disgusting and is playing with fire. As a doctor you would know that doing that will just make their mental illness worse/could cause her to develop more mental health issues. It’s very obvious she was not in reality when it got really bad. People do crazy things when reality is blurred. He more than had the power to have her committed to some form of mental health treatment and if he actually cared about himself his new relationship and his kids more than messing with her for revenge and an ego stroke he would have done that. But he didn’t. So that says a lot right there. There’s a huge level of contribution he had to this situation. Not condoning what she did but we as a society need to be responsible for how we handle mental illnesses because that’s also not fair. Not everyone is as in control of themselves as others.

I feel for her, can you imagine giving the best years of your life to support a man, build him up, raise his kids, and then he dump you for a younger more beautiful woman as soon as he reaches the top? It would break you! All of her best years wasted. I understand burning his clothes, even the voicemail messages BUT murder is wrong plain and simple and I wish she’d managed to control herself and find happiness with someone who deserved her. I reckon she’s happy they’re gone and can’t enjoy life together and run it in her face anymore and I understand it even if I can’t condone it.

I think that the way he treated her, not giving her any respect and denying her pain, her sacrifice and her devotion is what pushed her over the edge. I believe that if he would have treated her either way respect in the divorce settlement, she would have been able to move on.

Totally agree. He had that coming. He was begging for it. I agree with that juror that said he didn’t know what took her so long. I think if children had not been involved it would have been easier, but to take children from a loving devoted mother after she has cared so dearly for them for so long, just bc he could?! She got on that karma train and drove it where it needed to go.

@@iamnotgoldenhar8645 I'm not saying I agree with what she did, but Betty was furious that she worked herself tired just to get Dan where he was. He had a seven figure salary and only (I use this loosely) gave Betty $16,000 a month. The amount of money he was bringing in, $16,000 was chump change to him.
Additionally, Dan was a narcissist and he knew how to push Betty's buttons, which I'm sure wasn't hard because she became unstable. Dan was so petty that he removed one of his daughter's from his will likely because she was supportive of her mother during their divorce. He was a heartless individual.
