Keep the age in mind - this is very early ABBA. There is a clear progression/development of their sound
This is indeed the only ABBA song where Benny has the lead. But if you react to "One Man, One Woman" you can hear some very cool backing vocals from him.
On And On And On as well
Benny always sang in the backing vocals. Always something to look out for on ABBA songs. There is so much background texture and thought on most of their catelogue - especially later albums. This being on their very first album.
This is on their second album Waterloo
I'm 59 and have been an ABBA fan since I was 14 years old, and I may have listened to this song maybe twice 😆♫♫♪♪♪
You should also react to "Watch Out" ABBA's heavy metal song off the album
"Waterloo" from 1974.
I'm loving you two! You make me smile 😃
Big ABBA fan from Australia and was lucky enough to be a kid when they toured here in '77. And of course have all the albums on vinyl
Go with "lay all your love on me", this one is a banger
I think I’d suggest ‘The Visitors’ next. It’s dark, moody, Cold War era synthtastic!
Yes!
YES.
Love the vocals and harmony in this song. Perfect, catchy chorus.
Ever since a friend introduced me to ABBA when we were 12, Suzy Hang Around has been one of my favourites. I love the jangly sounds and the flow of the whole melody.
And as for Benny's vocals - I like his voice.
Thank you for reacting to this song. I always liked namely this song because it is a rare example of Benny standing as a lead-vocalist.
Interestingly, the lyrics were also written by Benny, whereas basically, Björn did this function in the group. Benny tended to feel nostalgic about childhood, that's why his lyrics were about it :) And that's so cute. Benny said that he couldn't keep up with Björn as a lyrics-writer, so he gave this work to him since Björn always made it much quicker. But despite this, I still think that Benny underestimated himself in this regard as well as his vocal skills.
I also like "Me And Bobby And Bobby's Brother" released on "Ring Ring" album, the lyrics are also about childhood and it's also written by Benny. You might do some reaction to this song as well :)
5:36 Well, it kinda ended up nice if you consider ‘Me and Bobby and Bobby’s Brother’ as a sequel to this song. Check it out, it’s from the perspective of “Suzy” now that the boys have accepted her and let her play with them! Very underrated too
Immaculate song as all Abba songs are, Love them all ! Thx Marissa and Tyler
Hearing this one made me think of another oldie you would probably like: My Momma Said. Also, on the story telling side, Cassandra... it's a great take on the story of the Trojan War.
THE HARMONY IN THIS SONG IS JUST LIT! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sooo cool that you guys do a reaction on this super hidden gem...Bennys only lead vocals, proving that didnt only have a genious music master sense, but also quite good vocals, although he always denied he could sing..but he can. I like this very special playful song...like the sound, the vocals, all of it....
This is so typical for the early 70s 👍
I love your reactions. Tyler, you're great! Marissa, you always enhance the reactions. Love it 👍🏼💖
If you search ABBA Guld there’s loads of their pre ABBA stuff in Swedish. Really shows their folk and trad roots.
Unlike most, I think this is one of their hidden gems.
Would love to hear your reaction to The Visitors but I really think you would love Take a Chance on Me... It was the song that got me hooked on them.
I recommend reacting to the ABBA song „Dream World“, it‘s a song that was never released at the time they were active but appeared on a compilation later.
Also check out some of the songs by Ace of Base, another Swedish quartet, often called „the ABBA of the 90‘s“. I recommend songs like „Always Have, Always Will“ or „Life is a Flower“.
Please react to another of their early songs that was recorded in the seventies but that wasn’t released until the nineties. ”I am the city”
As far as I know the only other time you can hear Benny solo is on a 30 sec clip of a deleted track called “Here comes Rubie Jamie” where he duets with Frida. It’s included in the “Abba Undeleted Medley” along with other Benny and Bjorn demos as well as the original clip of “Just a Notion”. It’s right at the 11:45 time in the medley and was included on the “Thank You For The Music” CD box set.
Was going to suggest this, just love it Marissa would love it. Benny and Frida just wished it was a full song.
SADLY, THE ONLY TIME BENNY TOOK LEAD VOCAL. UNDERRATED SONG. PLEASE REACT TO: TIGER 😘
I heard Benny didn't feel comfortable singing in english. Backing vocals, fine! Lead vocals? ( ..backing out of the room.. )
This one have a touch of Beach Boys, one of Benny's favourites!
I really like it ☺️
I’m glad you like this one, guys. It’s not my favourite, and probably one of ABBA fans’ least favourite - definitely in the bottom 10% of ABBA’s catalogue. So, you know you’re gonna love at least 90% of ABBA’s amazing catalogue. Yes, it’s Benny’s only lead (probably in his long career). This song was from the iconic Waterloo (album) from 1974. My favourite songs on this album (besides Waterloo, which everyone loves) are ‘Honey, Honey’ (Tyler will adore it), ‘Hasta Mañana’ and ‘Dance While the Music Still Goes On’.
It's enjoyable :)) But of course ABBAs whole catelogue is just stellar
"Gonna Sing You My Lovesong" might be the best song on the album....and "My Mama Said" is funky with a great bass and synth and a cool instrumental bridge.
That was my first ABBA album. Still have the LP but no turntable. It's just a keepsake now.
Thank you for this, Marissa!
Please react to I Am The City by ABBA. Please.
Great song! It goes well with Under Attack I think. Although not all might agree.
Yep, it's a masterpiece
Fernando is my reccomendation for this week :)) The video is fun too. I still do reccomend trying the live Does Your Mother Know followed by hole in your soul live at wembley (the video posted earlier this year is the best quality version). It just rocks with electric emergy. I know you've seen both studio versions and it is so worth watching this live performance linking the two (one song leads into the other).
Btw I think you accidentally left the outro as the whole song. Some people may click off earlier than the whole percentage of the video because of this, even though it's a great outro song.
Reminds me of newcomers to Pickleball. This is basically how the conversation goes until they can handle their side of the court.
ABBA emulating Byrds and Beatles on this one. Listen to Byrds' "Turn, turn, turn", for example. It was ABBA in their early period when they were still searching for their identity.
Love that this is Benny on lead :)
I think that Benny's voice is superior to Bjorn's. He has a remarkably good voice - very late 1960s sound. You shouldn't judge the singer though; he's singing about this experience because he realises that it was wrong to treat Suzy this way. A good reaction Marissa and Tyler. Tak.
Some Beach Boys vibes there.
This song, I love it, but the message disappointed me about how even after these kids were offered reason by the mom and then still rejected the advice, and opted to take the low road. But the harmonies are HEAVENLY.
I love that little part of the song, too. It is one of the most touching chords/harmonies of the entire ABBA portfolio.
I do like the song but definitely not a favorite. I didn't realize Benny was the lead so was glad to hear it.
I’ve only heard this once before. Reminds me a little bit of the Beach Boys. Not sure it really works for me though.
The music itself was the lead here.
Have you tried listen to "Sitting in the Palmtree"?
Doubt if it is a story from Benny's life ( although he does have a little sister) as Bjorn wrote the lyrics which were then approved by Benny. But ultimately I guess we will never know unless we ask them .
No it was confirmed that this song was pure fiction, also the lyrics are by both Benny and Björn (in their early songs at least)
Take a look att Hep Stars the group Björn and Benny was in before Abba
Only Benny was a part of The Hep Stars. Björn was the lead singer in Hootenany Singers.
@@niclas.olsson Du har alldeles rätt! Jag vet inte hur jag tänkte!😁
Dont think its Benny but instead Bjørn singing
No, definitely Benny, the only song he sang a lead vocal on. He hated his own voice, hence wouldn’t sing lead!
Very beach boys ..vibe ish ? Xx xX
In move on, he has a speaking part at the beginning :) check this out
No that was Bjorn
